Lincoln made the emancipation proclamation towards the end to motivate the troops to stick with it, but that didn't end slavery. It only ordered slaves to be free in rebellious states. Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, Missouri, and Delaware, almost a third of the slave owning states, were allowed to keep their slaves under the emancipation proclamation. Lincoln didn't want them to rebel and they liked the idea of keeping their slaves while the rest of the South had to get rid of the practice. And the North? They proved their morals during and after the war. Look up the New York Draft Riots that killed 100+ black people and that'll tell you all you need to know about how thrilled the North was about ending slavery. Those that were for ending slavery were abolitionists or wealthy businessmen happy to kill the cash cow that the South was thriving off of, but they didn't want black people to have rights. They didn't want them to be able to vote (15th amendment) and they certainly did not want them to have equal rights under the 14th amendment. This can be seen clearly by the public response. It wasn't the South that invented White Flight. It was the Yankees who freaked out when droves of black people moved North. It was Indiana that became the heart of the KKK during its second wave in the early 20th century. The North was just as supportive as redlining as the South, arguably more enthusiastic. There's an old saying, (started by black people who fled from the Southern Jim Crow Laws) that goes something along the lines of "At least in the South, they tell you they hate you. In the North, they hate you, but they don't tell you." And the only thing on here that you would probably struggle to find online is that last quote.
It is absolutely disgusting how people diminish the sacrifice of thousands of men (Republicans) to end slavery and downplay the evil of thousands of other men (Democrats) to keep the institution intact because they felt holding slaves was their right. The Confederate soldiers (again, the Democrats) would execute any black Union soldier they caught and simply keep the white ones hostage. This angered Lincoln so much that he declared that for every black soldier that was killed, they would kill any Confederate soldier they caught in return.
