Gary Ridgway | Confessions of a Serial Killer | S1E10

  • Ridgway remains one of the most prolific murderers in US history who evaded capture for decades and integrated murder into his every day life, even killing prostitutes with his young son waiting in the back of the car
    He confessed as part of a plea bargain, but his questioning by king county sheriff Dave Reichart was a masterclass in how to question a serial killer about his dark craft.

    The estimated murder cost is transferable, DeLisi says: Any murder, anywhere in the country, costs society somewhere on the order of $17 million. That means the worst offender in the Iowa State study, convicted of nine killings, imposed a $153 million cost on society. The 48 convicted murders of Gary Ridgway, perhaps the most prolific American murderer currently in prison, cost the country $816 million and still rising.

    It's well understood now that it takes two factors to make someone like that - genetics / physiology, (such as head injury) mixed with trauma. 'Nature loads the gun but nurture pulls the trigger'. Secondly, these things aren't 'excuses'. They're reasons for why the 'trigger' was pulled in the loaded gun. For people interested in further listening, I'd strongly recommend the podcast 'Making a monster' where the psychologists who treated notorious British killer Robert Maudsley (part inspiration for Hannibal Lector) talks about him. He said that Maudsley was like so many others who had had traumatic childhoods (and this applies to many people, not just criminals). They become stuck in the moment and constantly try and reclaim, re-write and re-live their pasts, but this time with them in control. In Maudsley's mind, the abuse he suffered as a child wasn't happening 50 years ago, it was happening NOW and he was still the vulnerable angry child, lashing out. The psychologist said a lot of his therapy involved getting Maudsley to look into a mirror he'd brought with him - to get him to know that he was no longer the helpless child who was being abused by his parents. He was now a fully grown man and they couldn't hurt him any more. It underlines what trauma does to people, often in very subtle ways. It traps them in the moment, leaves them stunted, constantly re-living it and seeking to re-write it. It's known in psychology as 'repetition compulsion' - it goes some way to explaining too why some people keep going back to destructive relationships.

    • @jaed2630
      @jaed2630 Před 11 měsíci

      I can only agree if that therapy can beat them to the "chase".What I think is absolutely absurd. Is releasing these people because some ahole in a doctors suit thinks they are no longer a threat to society. I can't see someone who methodically ended someone's life get a "second chance", regardless of the underlying issues.

    A dozen of forensic psychologists and criminologists and whoever more in this video and I believe they're all seeing too much in his anger towards his mother, sexual frustration blablabla. Many people experience these feelings, but fortunately only a very small percentage turn into becoming a serial killer. These people 'just' have their brains wired differently. Unfortunate for them because they cannot control their urges (like most of us) and they end up in jail or on death row, but unimaginable much more unfortunate for their victims who must have suffered horribly and their families who have suffered such great losses.

      @JustAThought155 Před rokem

      Sorry, I’d have to disagree. One fact: Gary had a “dumping ground” and his first wife led detectives there because that is where Gary wanted to have sex with her. So, did the police stake out that dumping ground? No. He even went back to the same locations and had sex with the corpses. But he was never caught in the act. Weird. I will say, the cops stuck with the case, but not with a stellar performance. Although, if it were up to Detective Matt Haney, Ridgeway would have been arrested in the 80s, but that task force officers and lead investigators dismissed and ignored his suggestions. So Gary kept on killing, as he said, “Because I could get away with it.”

    I was living in a receiving home in the CD District...My caseworker at CPS warned me of the dangers and informed me a girl or my age was killed under his watch by the green river killer....this didn't detour me from Hitchhiking from the CD district to Bellevue....at least that was my intention, My friend Laquita was picked up first....(she was only hitchiking to Renton) and after what seemed like forever, a car came to a halt in front of me.Of couse I eagerly jumped in the car....and as I remember it this is what happend. The first thing that pops in my mind is the sound of him locking my door from his side. He proceeded to tell me "make yourself comfortable becuase your'e not going anywhere, take it easy and sit tight.Additionally he said that I could help myself to a beer in the globe box. Please understand me...at this point I realized the severity of the situation, My survival insticts kicked in immediately....I looked him straight in the eyes and although I don't remember the exact words I used...it went something like"Hey dude whats wrong with you? I wanna have fun, I am relaxed....lets get this party started. (In reality I was so fucking scared you have no idea!) I kicked backthe seat in this old model car and I did my best to look like a girl with no worries in the world, I remember him driving around the block 2-4 times....notably frusterated . Sorry the small talk I dont remember....what I do remember is the irritation that came upon him suddenly...He was flustered. He said " You have no idea how lucky you are today, I am going to stop, let you out and give you 5 $. and you are going to run as fast as you can before I regret the decision to let you go.... (apologies - this is the first time I have spoken of this trauma)

      I had a similar thing happen to me only it was a guy posing as a taxi driver. He had a yellow cab with all the decals and even a taxi meter. It’s a long story, but I survived and the police who investigated said the guy must’ve bought the car at a police auction and I’m extremely lucky to be alive. I strongly believe that I’m alive today because I chose not to panic at all. I pretended to be the guy’s friend and even his damn therapist finally convincing him that I’d go on a date with him the following weekend if he’d just take me home. My ordeal lasted several hours and was very terrifying but he finally let me go. I had him drop me off near my neighborhood. I ran and hid in someone’s yard until I knew he was gone (he kept circling the street). As soon as it was safe, I ran home as fast as I could and called the police. As far as I know, they never made an arrest. They believe I was a test run. I hope to God he’s not still out there kidnapping and, by now, hurting/killing young women.
      You and I are very lucky to be alive because we chose not to react even though we were scared out of our minds! It pays to be smart.

    It is puzzling that those experts can talk about somebody like Ridgway with such certainty. I believe this level of understanding somebody is possible only with extreme empathy and an ability to put oneself in his shoes so to speak. It seems more like they create a label, and from that moment, Ridgway is no longer a complex individual but a generalized theoretical concept. However, I am aware that this opinion of mine is strongly influenced by my frustrating experiences with psychiatry where a person becomes a dehumanized diagnosis, and is treated that way.

    This is the first documentary of a serial killer I have seen that acknowledges the extent of how a killer’s relationship with his mother turned him into a murderer. I have been saying this for a long time that the relationship they have with their parents is a prime source for their behaviour. Serial killers are a product of their childhoods. Thought it was strange that though these issues were generally mentioned even in other serial killers’ documentaries, none looked at this issue more closely in their cases.

    In 1979 my sister and I cross the line to stay the weekend at our friend's trailer in Lake Sammamish. We took the canoe out and had to stop at the community Hall. Police and people were running around, so didn't stay. When we got back to Vancouver, found out it was Ted Bundy. My sister in law told me her brother Grant Frederickson ( a White Rock D.J.) helped by taken up funds to keep the investigation & open & was caught shortly after. I use to see Robert Picton every Friday, when I use to pick up my I.L.W.U. husband at the Astoria Hotel in the 90's. He also claimed to have killed 49 & was hoping to make 50. 😥 A family member worked DTES Women's Association, and lost 80% of her client's.

He’s a really nice man ( if you met him at a bbq you would say the same ) . There were horrible things that happened to him starting with his childhood that led him to kill prostitutes . The BS about his mother being looked at by him as a sex object is probably the biggest nonsense he could possibly utter.... He probably looked up some stuff about psychology, related to killers and spun his story around that. It's a big weakness of normal people and empaths to have that reflex of thinking that evil has a source in a person's past, which made him/her as the evil they are. And in many cases there are such circumstances... it's just, in just as many cases there were no such conditions. It's important i think for any psychologist or detective to see if there is factual truth about abuse in their past, or derailed fantasies ( medical, psychological reports from childhood or so). If there's no such evidence to find, you can count on it they are playing everyone.

    You really need to explain just what that is, my dude.
    Also, Ridgway did not "bury his victims"
    They were left in the open air, up and down the river.
    It's why they were found, in the first place.

      Some were actually buried in shallow graves, and only a handful of victims were left by or in Green River. After they found the first 3 bodies (IIRC there were 2 more along the river) he started dumping them elsewhere in clusters of 3-5 bodies generally.

    You wasted your time on this trash. Ridgway was forced into false confessions and solid real evidence proves cops tampered with evidence and forced false confessions under threat from Ridgway - he never told cops where victims were because they found them first alone based on logic with no help at all from Ridgway - they had a plan and it worked. They framed Ridgway with no question about it. The murderer never stopped with Ridgway's arrest and official Green River skeletal remains were put on public display by the real killer while Ridgway was in prison.
    Wake up to orality and save your bias for someone else.
    Facts and evidence learned as a result of one missing girl's case out of Puyallup, WA demonstrates very clearly that Gary Ridgway IS NOT The Green River Killer.
    See how police tampered with evidence, lied profoundly and manipulated Gary Ridgway into false confessions.
    See how David Reichert and former Det. Tom Jensen found official Green River victims while Ridgway sat in jail and with no help from Ridgway at all but then made it only appear s though he told them where to look to be sure to con the prosecutor into acceptant his false confessions.
    See the truth of the real Green River killer and see how much he looked like Gary Ridgway - people easily confused one for the other with poor 20 year old memories. . .
    Fact is they framed Ridgway.
