Wine Trade with the people of Central Europe, acctually was a big source of revenue, for meditterranian Merchants throuout the antiquity ( and especially during the Greek expansion).. The Greek city of massilia (modern Marseille) grew rich and prosperous becuz of it.. It is entriely possible that the suebi restricted the Import of wine into their territory, but most likely this happened either for economical reasons (to prevent the loss of wealth in form of silver that was used to pay the wine), or for security reasons, (roman Merchants had a notorious reputation to serve as spys ).. the Eplenation Tacitus gives us, should be looked at critically.. Since he wrote his book during the time of the early Imperium.. During the late Republic women had gained more and more freedom, economical power & and even political influence in Rome.. (as we can even see by the naming of "colonia Aggripina" modern Cologne after an influential aristocratic woman of the time).. The first "Emperor" Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus commonly known as Augustus or Oktavian set out to change this. In his opinion the rising influence of women was bad for Rome. And he passed a series of Marriage Laws.. This Laws punished Adultery (of the woman) heavily, and even encouraged denunciation of adultery.. He even went as far to banish his own daughter to an island, because she was not complying to his new moral standards among other things. So if Tacitus tells us about the Barbarians that are practicing a "cult" of hypermaskulinity and punish adultery severely, whilst living in a perfect Patriarchial Society.. He most likely just writes this to give his fellow Romans an example on how to live "properly".. It is quite possible that among the northern Tribes at the time women had far more influence than in Rome itself, e.g. a little bit later, the British Tribes (similar to the suebi in culture) united behind the wive of a killed Clan leader, ( her name was Boudicca) and started one of the bloodiest Rebellions against Roman rule we know.. Edit: Massilia remained a Regional Power house, with a high level of self Government inside the Roman Republic... Sadly it sided with the Wrong Side in the Civil Wars , so in the Empire it's Status was lowered..

They think that male names of the Cherusci are related to the modern Deutsche Zieg meaning victory/victorious. This might be the root of Sigmund, meaning the hand of victory. The idea is that the fire wyrm is a column of troops passing through the woods. The fire is the torches they carry while the scales are shields and armour of the troops. It might be a folk memory of the battle of Tuetobourg led by the Cherusci where they ambushed a column of three legions.

I suppose he creates more channels on the same account, so the account is "blocked" hense the channels
Same
Strange, I got it in my youtube homepage recommendations.
I was subbed to your past history channel and I’m not happy about the circumstances but I am happy you’re doing this 😁
What happened to the last one?
@@intboom This is from when he was the one organising all the videos. The old channel had gotten very popular, so he no longer had time to upload to it. Hopefully now that he has editors this will be a real thing that continues.
intboom the last history channel he just stopped uploading on it
Beautiful content, Mr. Benjamin. Roman and Germanic history right up my alley. Thank you. This means a lot to me.
Well I love this! Can't wait to see where this channel goes!
Carl: "Hello, My name is Carl and I am a CZcams channel addict"
Everybody: "Hi Carl"
Carl: "Just the other day I created a new CZcams account, "The Symposium", despite the fact that I already had created "Ancient Recitations" a mere 5 years earlier and with a video as recently as 1 year ago. I now have a total of 5 (?) channels."
(Pause)
Carl: * cries *
Ancient Recitations got demonetised because history is a form of oppression.
Sargon of Akkad, Sargon of Akkad Live, Akkad Daily, The New Memedia, The Thinkery, Vae Victis (the old, long dead gaming channel IIRC), The Symposium, Ancient Recitations, ... did I miss some?
I remember that i found Sargon years ago because i made a sling,i wanted to practice it,and stumbled upon his video on the baleraric slingers
In. Commenting for the algorithm kick start.
Kudos on this fascinating channel. Will be watching!
> They forbid wine in their territories as it's effeminate
Real men only drink the blood of their enemies :p (see them driven before you, etc.)
Dig sites from the copper age has shown Germans drink dark bitter beers.
Sweet tasting food and drinks are for women and children.
BIER!
1,180th sub (For posterity)
I’ve been waiting for another history channel since Vae Victus!
The story of segimarus and the cherusci. Segimarus defends the second ammendment from the first century. "A cherusci cannot be free without his sword."
@@bumpinugly4985 exactly, at night 10.000 marching torches , with the Front in Formation, nicht looks like a giant snake made of fire
Love this content. Always found your history vids very informative
Love the new channel. Keep doing history bits like this its awesome
There was no ads for me. Possibly the first time I was ever disappointed to not see them
As a student of ancient history myself I really like what you are doing here, especially because everything you say is backed by ancient sources.
Nevertheless you should take into account more strongly that these sources are rarely heavily reliable; a lot of stuff should be taken with a big grain of salt.
Yes. But these are the only sources we have. ;_;
Julius Caesar needs a massive grain of salt. Tacitus is more reliable. You can get away with the table salt.
@@Sakraida82 most of the roman sources are unreliable, many historians in these days were political hacks that felt that writing history was not putting down the events as they unfolded, but their worldview.
Like all the shit thrown at Nero and Tibert, most of it is probably false.
@@Sakraida82 Tacitus was a liar. Of course the Germans had agriculture, as shown by archeology.
archeology is the best legitimizer that we have. At one time historians doubted the veracity of the child sacrifices committed by the Carthaginians. Archeology sided with both the Romans and Phoenician sources.
One of my favorite CZcamsrs talking about one of my favorite ancient tribes.
Great job sir. Looking forward to many more.
This is actually very interesting. I'm going to like this new channel, brother. Keep up the good work
This was insanely interesting. It's interesting how this culture, with the influence of Roman culture, led to modern western culture which is arguably the most successful on earth.
As a classics geek and a fan of Carl's this is fantastic, I love to learn more about these sorts of obscure bits of European history
Something I’ve always been interested in but never had the time to start getting into. Thanks Carl, whoever you are.
"A culture that's driven by war, honor and supremacy" not much has changed in Germany
@John Saf not only that, we also have become anti war and the biggest issue within the EU is our inability to take responsibility and leadership for anything, even though we have been setup for it, due to the structure of the EU (which without our funding wouldn't make it another month).
This was great! If I’d had an enthusiastic history teacher who taught interesting things like this I would’ve earned better grades in that subject. Very much looking forward to watching more videos on this channel!
Great video! I learned a lot. You make it really interesting!
Wow i didnt think you did vids like this. Vera niice!
Subbed, like hearing your take on history and all things that led up to where we are today :-)
“The Germans in Caesar’s day were the worst” has anything really changed? Big think
Lol! U legend
Germans are awesome. Germans in Caesar's day were the best, they were free and knew how to keep their lands secure. People who hate on Germany are the worse.
The germans nowadays are the most domesticized humans on the globe.
Take our guns? Sure
An election hasnt gone your way? Ok we'll vote again.
Riots in the streets? No sorry, have to be at work in 5 mins....
@@thecollierreport "People who hate on Germany are the worse." There are plenty of reasons to hate ze Germans. And I'm not talking about the world wars. And judging by the way they vote,I won;t stop hating them.
The last reason was....as someone mentioned already...was a ceratin German chancellor saying the results of an election must be reversed. Because....democracy? And if that German chancellor still stays in power(or people like her)....it's enough for me to associate the voters with those politicians. Especially when decisions by those politicians affect the whole of Europe....not just ze Germans.
@@comunistubula4424 so you complain about the results of decades of re-education enforced by the victorious powers after ww2? Your point about Germans was what again?!
Really looking forward to more of these.
I'm loving this new channel
You should take the Romans description of any other culture that isn't Roman or Greek with an Extreme Grain of Salt
Agreed.
Thank you
@Katarina Love Those words are poisoned by the taint of Marxism. We do not hate blacks simply love ourselves.
@Katarina Love where did you get that from???
This is the kind of stuff you do best anyways. You would do great reading entire books in audio too i think
Now THIS is interesting history,. I like to think of myself as knowing my ancient European history well but now I believe i've only scratched the surface, I really enjoyed this mate. Glad I found this through curiosity after watching a video on Daily.
Keep up the good work Carl, I have enjoyed this channel already.
Well, this will surely be an interesting venture. I hope you analyze some of the ancient political systems and philosophies around the globe, their advantages and disadvantages.
I really enjoyed this! It'd be great to see more videos on ancient tribes of the migration period. E.g Lombards, Gepids, Vandals, Avars, Alans, Wends, Sclaveni and so on.
Loving these little lessons Carl, could listen for hours
Im sad that this is coming about in light of your second demonetization, but this was an excellent video. Please keep em comin!
If I could make a suggestion.. I know you tend to end videos quite abruptly but for this channel, it would be nice to hear something like "this has been my talk of this topic, my next subject will be ____. Thanks for listening/watching."
Just to set it apart from your other channels, and give us something to anticipate. Or what the heck do I know, I'm just some random commenter.
I got only one suggestion for this channel..... more!
I like this new channel of yours. It’s a nice getaway from from your other content and I feel I learned more from this than what the History Channel could provide. Keep up the good work mate!
Great video. Really enjoyed this.
Carl, this dude named Sargon has a whole bunch of old videos in this "genre" with just his voice in a bad microphone that you could redo and add a bit of wisdom and better graphics...
I love this! I look forward to see more of these, being a huge history fan myself :)
Try reading a book, rather than being spoon-fed bullshit.
Good stuff Carl, going to love this channel, will be making sure I keep tuning in to help get those dollary-doos to you.
This is my kind of channel already.
