    This is interesting, but what about the Vandal sacking of Rome? This is what truly made "Vandal" a negative word. This was in 455, 45 years after the Visigoth sacking of Rome. (The Germanic tribes were industrious. But likewise, two thirds of the Roman army were now made up of Germanic auxiliaries.) Emperor Valentinian's widow, Eudoxia, was forced to marry Petronius, who had killed Valentinian and taken the throne. Eudoxia's daughter had been betrothed with the Vandal King Genseric's son, but she was now forced to marry Petronius' son. Eudoxia asked the Vandals for help. The Vandals sailed for Rome, knocked down the aqueducts, and made Petronius and his men flee. A Roman mob stoned Petronius to death outside the city. The pope asked the Vandals to go easy on the city and they agreed. They didn't burn and slaughter, but they looted for two weeks, and took some Romans as slaves. Eudoxia and her two daughters were brought back to Carthage, where they were treated well.

      I actually have no idea how I let that slip, maybe I can do a small video just about that sack as it is quite interesting, no promises tho! That was probably the most unvandallike sack of a city I've read ahah the amount of self-control they had to not burn the city was quite impressive!

      I have the impression after reading Gibbon that the Vandals earned their vicious reputation while they destroyed virtually every city in Hispania, massacring as many Romans as they could find. But by the time they reached Rome, they were relatively tame, accepting the Pope's deal to be allowed to sack what of value was left in return for sparing lives. They made Carthage the richest city in the world outside of India, and thus it was imperative to reconquer or 'liberate' it and transfer that enormous pillaged wealth to Constantinople.

      The migration of the Vandals to Algeria was not a conquest but rather a migration, which was followed by religious wars. Rome, or what is referred to as Caesar's Rome, was situated in Algeria. Italy was considered a colony, which helps explain the unclear reasons for the decline of Rome. Western Rome encompassed the center of Algeria up to the Malwia River, currently within Morocco. The religious landscape included Arius, Christians, and Judaism. Eastern Algeria represented Christian Rome, with Constantine as the capital city and religious centers such as Hippo and Petra to the west of Hippo. Maps from French and Catalonian open archives indicate the presence of the holy city Baca in the center of Algeria, east of Algiers.
      The Vandals' migrations bear similarities to those referenced in the Quran. However, it appears that Muslims interpret the verses incorrectly.
      Muslim records lack clarity regarding the origins and geography of Islam. Saudi Arabia is known as the land of the Qarmatians, who Muslims claim created a new Kaaba. There is a lack of authentic records detailing the rise and decline of the Vandals, although the wars and events of the Vandals seem to align with Muslim history, suggesting a potential discrepancy in calendars.
      Certain events mentioned in the Quran align with Vandal events. For example, Surah Rome describes the defeat and subsequent triumph of the Romans, which correlates with the Rhine crossing where Vandal tribes allied with Rome against the Franks. Surah Toubah verse 25 references the Battle of Ḥunain, possibly corresponding to the city of Honaine in western Algeria, known since the Roman era. Honaine is situated in a district called Tlemcen whch is called the capital of Ziane.
      Unfortunately, Europeans tend to distort history, with many Algerian cities, particularly larger ones, inhabited by people claiming descent from Andalusian (Vandalusian) ancestors.
      Western Rome's decline was not military defeat but conversion to Islam, perplexing European historians. In contrast, Christian Rome was supposedly defeated by God according to the Quran, with no survivors to recount the events. the Quran mentioned it as natural disaster in Surah Ahzab.
      In your specialization in Vandal history, I hope you consider these points, as they may illuminate missing pieces of the puzzle.
      Dan Gipson and Patricia Crone challenged Muslims to prove Islam's origin in Saudi Arabia, but no scholar has provided a satisfactory answer. Gipson claimed Petra was the heart of early Islam, but the Petra in Jordan was ruins named by European archaeologists, while the real Petra lies in Algeria, west of Hippo exist on old maps made in euope.
      This explains why 70% of the wars between Muslims and Europeans were conducted by Algerians, and it also clarifies why there were almost no Christians in Algeria and North Africa, while there are almost 30% Christians in Egypt and the Middle East.

      Well, all of these kingdoms were similar in structure: The population was largely Latin speaking and Roman. The Germanic element was concentrated in the elites. With Ostrogothic Italy first invaded by the Eastern Romans and then the Lombards, Africa succesfully captured, Spain taken by the Arabs and the Franks conquering neighboring kingdoms, the Germanic nobilities were pretty much liquidated. The Franks did survive tough. Lombards were in control of Northern Italy until the Franks invaded in the 9th century (or so).

      Some survived in one way or the other, the Frankish kingdoms eventually evolved to become France and Germany, the Visigoths served as a founding myth for the Spanish monarchs until very recently and the Anglo-Saxons changed the British Isles forever. They had their times and evolved throughout the ages, it's wrong to say they didn't make it, they just evolved with the times! However, saying that a modern French person is a pure-blooded Frank or anything like that is simply wrong as well.

    First, thank you for this valuable topic, we can say also : It was a religious war against Rome, The Vandals were Arians, not believing in the divinity of Christ, like the North Africans who were Donatists, They united against the Romans and defeated them, One of the most important events the death of Augustine, the prominent religious leader of the Romans, he died after the Vandal siege of his city of Hippo 430 AD.
    Because history is written by the victor, the victorious Byzantines finally wrote about the barbarism of the Vandals who differed from them in faith, but not much was written about the barbarism of the Romans against the peoples who held monotheistic beliefs, and who followed Arius and Donatus like some Germans and North Africans.

    9:23 Correction what you meant to call the religion of both halves of the Roman Empire is “Nicene Christianity” not Catholicism since East and West haven’t split off into the Great Schism of 1054, so Catholicism wasn’t a thing yet. The Vandals did practice Arian Christianity though and hated Nicene Christianity for labeling them heretical. Nicene Christianity was the mainstream branch of Christianity largely practiced by the late Roman Empire and eventually due to language, culture and politics by the 11th century would split off into the Latin Catholic West and the Greek Orthodox East.

    • @calum5975
      @calum5975 Před 2 měsíci +10

      The distinction is messy and there's not a certain time at which the term catholic can be applied, but the term was widely used to refer to the Roman centred See long before the great schism. The Great Schism was just the final, official seperation of East and West, yet Catholicism as a unique part within this greater pre-schism church can definately be pointed to as a distinct thing. It's not as if the schism happened and the term 'catholic' came to exist, the difference between east and west was brewing for centuries prior.
      To make it messier, Catholic could also refer to the whole Nicene church, that being the state church of the Eastern Roman Empire and the church of Rome combined. Hugely messy and confusing. Cyril of Jerusalem specifically refered to the "Catholicos" to differentiate these christians from other christians who did not follow the Roman state church.
      Finally, even if these people didn't specifically use the term catholic to refer to themselves (it was complicated), we can still go back and apply the term to the church that would go on to become the definative, independent church under the Bishop of Rome, and historians do all the time - especially when you contrast it to the Arian christians who were definatively not part of this 'proto' catholic church. Still, the term works and is accepted among historians as an identifiable way to refer to this institution.
      So yes, you are right, but also, so is using the term catholic. Possibly it's confusing and can conflate the modern church with the 'proto' catholic church?

    Just wanna add that Catholics in here is Chalcedonian Christians, the west and east split hadnt happened yet. Many german tribes adopted arian sect after the chalcedonian banished them outside the empire. The sassanid side with the arian, and let them have their pope rule from around baghdad. This is also one of the reason why they move further east, to hejaz, india, turkic lands, uyghur lands, mongolia and eventually chinese han lands and sumatra (indonesia).
    Its interesting how a banned sect in rome eventually made their brush on the recent history by moving north ( I assume the roman saw germania and dacia as north, or maybe west) and east.

    Their choice for Roman Africa to establish a kingdom was no random act.
    Early Lybia was mostly included in what later be called Africa Romana- roughly modern day Tunisia - and Lybian was the Homeland of Arius the Master of a then thriving school of Jesus 's followers...They did not consider themselves as Christiani ...Hence the disdain they had for the Trinitarian Church..which head layed in Hippo reggia..that is also why they besieged the Town because if they could capture Saint Augustine - then Archbishop of Hippona they would have had Him recant Trinitarian doctrine and dogmas.
    Let me put it simply ...The Vandals were fifth century " Jihadis" moved around probably by hunger and frost...but animated with a great attachement to Arius's teachings.
    They reaffirmed Monotheistic values in North Africa thus making easier for Islam to be accepted in the region a little less than two centuries later.

    • @baume7798
      @baume7798 Před 2 měsíci

      Not quite.
      The primary factor to the swift defeat of the Vandals at the hand of Belisarius was that the main-army of the Vandals was busy suppressing a revolt on Sardinia.
      The local people in fact cared very little about who their overlords were. In fact, the Vandal elites themselves were quite romanized themselves, and Roman culture continued to thrive under their rule, with them maintaining and expanding public buildings such as baths and amphitheaters as well as funding latin writers and literature.
      Furthermore, the initial plan Justinian III pursued during the war was not a conquest, but rather deposing of the illegitimate usurper Gelimer and reinstating Hilderich, who himself was educated at the imperial court in Constantinople, a personal friend of Justinian III and whos lineage was recognized by both halves of the Roman Empire in addition to being a descendant of Valentinian III, as the king ('Rex') of Africa.
      This plan became obsolete once Gelimer had Hilderich executed after Belisarius landed in Africa. With no heir recognized by the ERE left, Justinian III had no choice but to directly annex the Vandal kingdom.

    Its interesting how the Wends are the "Slavic pirates" and the Wend-als (Vandals) are "Germanic pirates". They also originate from the same region.

    • @calum5975
      @calum5975 Před 2 měsíci +4

      Wend likely comes from "Veneti", this has caused a lot of confusion in the past as the words appear related.
      Previously we thought the vandals were therefore Slavic, but now we know they are East Germanic. A few people in the comments have pointed that the Vandals were Slavic, so the misunderstanding is still alive.

      @calum5975 there is lot of proof on the internet that the vandals were slavs, theres even a transcripture of vandal prayer in their language and it doesnt resemble germanic in the slightest, infact its very very slavic language. sadly i cant post images in youtube comments

      @k I am reading also that scholars are moving away from using the term "Germanic peoples" since they never called themselves that or Germans. This was exclusively used for a tribe west of the Rhine (Germani) according to Tacitus.

    • @ICaImI
      @ICaImI Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@calum5975I think the reason for that is because if you look on a map nowadays these people come from polish/czech lands. And most people believe that if anything germanic people took lands from slavic people. In this case it's just not true. The Vandals and Goths moved away mainly because of the huns, while the slavic people were pushed into those regions by the huns. At least that is what I think happened. After all if you look at the region of origin for slavic tribes, they are definitely in the way of the huns. They probably were enslaved by them. And they probably used those slaves to settle the regions that then have been left by the germanic tribes that left.

    • @ICaImI
      @ICaImI Před 2 měsíci

      @Vuks-ii8kp None of the germanic tribes called themselves germans. The only people who called the germanic tribes germans were the romans (alemanni). They didn't even see themselves as one people. They have however a shared ethnicity as we would see it nowadays. And the Vandals and Goths belong to that.
      I mean the celts didn't call themselves that as well, and they didn't see themselves as one people. Yet we refer to them as one people. This is because all of our history from that time is from the perspective of the romans. And I think there is nothing wrong with that. It makes sense imo.

    It would be more accurate to describe the church at the time as "Roman Orthodox" seeing as Catholics only realy became a thing later.

    • @KnowHistory
      @KnowHistory  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Most sources describe the church as Catholic, in the sense that they followed the Pope in Rome instead of the other Christian Patriarchs. The modern Catholic church, which means universal church, is pretty much a continuation of that. There were some regional differences between the followers of each patriarchate and North Africa at the time firmly and fanatically aligned themselves with the Roman pope.

      First of all thats very rare and its just light brown hair most of the time and second you dong need foreign dna to have those features thats just sexual selection/adaption/evolution from the natives (and the greeks 1000 years before the time of vandals were saying that some lybics/ancient berbers did have some rare light features sometimes)
      Especially among west eurasians
      Vandals/germanics left no dna, maghrebis (algerians/moroccans/tunisians) are berber genetically with some few drops of SSA too
      The only other explaination would be foreign female slaves during the medieval/early modern period
