    They say "left side" and "right side" because they are unidirectional wheels, which means the spokes on the wheel are a mirror image of each other, so that they point in the same direction when properly mounted. If the design wasn't unidirectional (if the left and right wheels were the same), the spokes would point forward on one side and backwards on the other side. This was common on 80s and 90s wheel designs but fell away in the 00s when more wheel designs had straight spokes. It was common for cars with directional spokes to have non unidirectional wheels, and would always have the issue of the left and right side looking different. It was also common for the wheels to get mixed up when installing new tires or cross rotated without remounting the correct tire to the correct wheel and they'd get mixed up.
    Also, I believe they are mounted correctly when the spoke shape is moving forward because they were designed to pull in air for brake cooling, but lot of the directional spoke designs from the time would be mounted correctly when the spokes were pointing backwards.

    As they say "The devil is in the details" Chris. C4s don't get nearly the credit they deserve. Giving this car some love is worth the effort. Nice job!

    I'll have to give the drill and buff pad a shot on my old CCW classics, they're a bear to polish by hand and I'm not shy about driving my corvettes in the weather.

    almost all c4 wheels point forward to be correct. the only ones that correctly point rearwards are the 95/96 sawblades.
    also, awesome job on the cleanup! looks like a new one!

    Outstanding job, Chris! I'm getting new Michelin tires for our '99 and will be doing the same thing on our chrome C5 Z06 wheels. The barrels have years of caked on road dirt. Thanks for all the details. - Scott

    Chris I used SOS pads on my C5 and went with the grain of the wheel and they turned out great no scratches! Then some wax, with the SOS pads I was able to get into the tight spaces. Then a little wax to help keep the inside of the wheel clean.

    Don't lay your wheels face down on bare concrete !!!!
    I made that mistake on Honda Accord wheels and it scratched the surface in areas. Now im trying to figure out how to repair the damage and not sure how to go about it.

    Might want to double check the mounting of the tires/wheels. Looked at a couple 88 Vettes with those wheels and they appear to be mounted correct on yours. I sent you a link on a totaled 88 Vette a couple videos ago and he mentioned that those are a factory upgraded wheel and it appears yours are mounted correct.

    Looks great, just one question.
    I would like to polish my stock rims on my C5 2002 and thought the rims had a clear coating on them.
    I thought the buffing wheel would cut thru the clear coat down to the aluminum.
    Do the corvette's rims have a clear coat that could be damaged by polishing with a wheel.
    Thanks

    • @302vettelife2
      @302vettelife2 Před 3 lety +1

      They do and it will. Leave the powered buffer for the paint. Had wax the clear coated wheels. The clear dulls after time, so they will only get so shiny without stripping the clear and doing a full polish. Lots of work

    • @smokinC5
      @smokinC5 Před 3 lety +1

      @@302vettelife2 came here to post that but you beat me lol. Treat clear coated wheels the same as your paint. Hand polish and wax. C6 wheels are clear coated too.

    • @mycorvettelife
      @mycorvettelife  Před 3 lety +1

      These comments are correct. My C4 wheels do not have a clear coat. They didn’t come from the factory polished.

    No protective coating of some kind of wax so they stay clean longer and are easier to clean later?

    • @mycorvettelife

      @@gordonbeukema7235 Easy way is to take any kind of metal polish on a rag and wipe the wheel vigorously for a minute.. does the rag turn black? If so, no clearcoat exists. If the rag stays fairly clean, the wheels are clear coated.

      A hand drill doesn’t spin anywhere near fast enough to burn aluminum.
