  • A channel named Modern Day Debate reached out to me based on my flat earth debunking to see if I would debate someone named Kent Hovind about Young Earth Creationism. Normally I stay out of religion, but I dug into this guy a little, and he is a total scumbag. The epitome of a con man. Nothing but lies and misrepresentations of science out of his mouth for several decades now. He's really no different than the flat earthers, manipulating people to make money. So I decided to take a chunk out of him. He's a slippery little greased pig, watch for his signature move, the gish gallop.

    the problem with "modern day debate" is that they don't moderate. a moderators job is not only checking for the talking time, but also making sure that the "loudest person wins" effect doesn't happen. a good moderator does things like person A asks a question, person B doesn't answer it (dances around) moderator says "Person B please answer the question" or "sign it as "unanswered". Also a good debate forum has fact checkers in the background who tell the moderator if something is not right so the moderator can say so.

      @@ANTICHRISTian736 So here is my problem with this idea. On one hand, you have a book, with many fanciful ideas like Adam and Eve living to approximately 900 years old, an Ark that was supposed to hold 2 of every animal for about a year, men rising from the dead, and so on so forth. On the other hand, you have science, where millions of people devote their lives to figuring out how the world works, using a variety of different sources, such as Ice core dating, geology, fossils, laws like the speed of light, evolution, ect, to prove the age of the earth is billions of years old.
      To throw another wrench into things, scientists are constantly challenging ideas that others present, checking peoples methods meticulously, or finding new information that invalidates or changes the way we see things. So, my problem is, why would I trust one source when many sources say that it is wrong? And if I could only trust one source, why should it be yours? Why not another religion?

    • @snoopyjot
      @snoopyjot Před 4 lety +59

      Technically we do, at the end of puberty when our growth plates fuse we literally go to bed and wake up as an adult, although we don't look any differentiated.
      I'm a good example. I went through puberty a bit too early so I literally went to bed as a child who was going through puberty then when I was 9 and my puberty finished I suddenly was biologically an adult... even though I was only 9 years old. So I literally went to bed a child and woke as an adult 🤷‍♀️

    • @knarfamoranemix6030
      @knarfamoranemix6030 Před 4 lety +113

      @ Fiona -Jane kelly :
      If that is the case, then the adult in the morning is still almost identical to the child before. The different child kind Kent Hovind expects to appear is very different from the parent kind, like a mouse producing an ape.
      Hence, we can use the analogy of a baby turning into an adult overnight. No one has ever seen that happen. Yet there are people who believe babies can turn into adults. It's a religion, not science.

      @@snoopyjot Except you've arbitrarily defined 'an adult' to meaning someone whose skeletal structure has stopped developing. Someone else might define 'an adult' to mean someone who has turned 18, someone else might define it to mean they've started their first job, etc. The Ancient Greeks defined adulthood to be somewhere around 14, 15. Biologically a human is adult the moment it is capable of producing offspring, regardless of their growth plates. The definition of 'adult' is vague and subject to change as people see fit. This is the entire problem with Kent's argument.

These evolution scientists always look into cells but they can’t ever explain how nothing created something. There’s a painting because there’s a painter there’s a creation because there’s a creator. Humans where created by god, don’t fall for this evolution trap. It’s simple we don’t come from sponges. No thing except for god existed millions of years ago so you cannot claim that evolution is an actual thing.
      Understand that the life your living is wrong and sinful but every person has a savior and that is Jesus Christ. Repent of your sins and trust in Jesus. You won’t see him but you will feel his effect, similar to wind you can’t see it but you feel it’s effect. Then your trust and belief will keep growing stronger and you will do what I’m doing, telling people the truth.

      That's it. It's how life on Earth works. It's demonstrated to be fact every day, all over the world.
      No one in history has ever demonstrated otherwise.
      There are plenty of geneticists and others working in the life sciences who are religious and have no problem accepting this basic fact of life. Even very devout Christians, like Francis Collins, who led the Human Genome Project, knows evolution is fact. No data or evidence indicates it isn't.
      You can modify some aspects of your beliefs so they align with reality, but you sure can't change reality.

    Well spoken and debated Dave. Appreciated! One suggestion or thought. People have a misconception of what a species is. It's a line drawn in the sand by humans to divide creatures into similar beings for the point of study and understanding. That being said, there's a lot of variation within those species. When any creature has offspring, the new being is not a carbon copy of the original. There are slight variations. The variations that make a creature more successful mean that the new beings are more likely to reproduce, and increasing the likelihood that their own offspring will also have that slight difference. Over many generations slight differences become larger and larger. At a certain point, the differences become so large that we decide to call it a new species. Science has chosen to define that in a specific way, namely the ability to reproduce.
    People like Kent live in a black and white world where they HAVE to put things into buckets and don't understand that we have created these buckets where nature is far less defined than we are.
    Ask Kent if he looks exactly like his father or mother. If he says no, then explain to him that HE is part of evolution. As are all of us and every creature that has ever lived.

However, there will be people watching this video who haven't yet made up their mind and this may be an aspect that they've never considered. So long as we can focus on thinking about life critically and with an open mind and heart, we'll be supporting people in developing a belief system based on facts and not emotions.

A joke. Nothing to be taken seriously. That changed in my third quarter of my first year in High School/public school. I was on my local Academic Quiz Bowl team and we were practicing our questions. One of the sets was on biblical events. Of course, I had no knowledge of the bible as obviously it had the same importance for me to read as the Quran or as Egyptian books with Ra the Sun god. So there I was not knowing the stories and one of the questions was on the story of Job or Joeb I don't know and I made some crude dumb joke thinking it was funny. The response to my joke was one of complete and utter anger/competent? I still don't understand how to believe in religion it is beyond me.

    Craig Venter, a prominent biologist, made headlines in 2010 when his team at the J. Craig Venter Institute successfully created what they called the world's first synthetic life form. This achievement involved synthesizing an entire bacterial genome (Mycoplasma mycoides) and transplanting it into a cell of a different species (Mycoplasma capricolum). The recipient cell then began to function and reproduce according to the synthetic genome's instructions.
    This was a significant step in synthetic biology, though it's important to clarify that while the synthetic genome was created from scratch, the cell in which it was placed was not synthetic-making the life form itself not entirely synthetic but rather a hybrid between synthetic DNA and an existing cell. (meaning he DID NOT create life from a cell, rather implanted a synthetic into a LIFE barring cell.)

    Everything you saying sounds brilliant, but to a person, myself included, that believes in an intelligent God, we do not all believe that God and science are mutually exclusive, in fact some of us believe that God is the first scientist, mathematician, astrologist, etc. So all of those scientific facts that you're stating God gets the credit for. God is not a magician, he created man and man's intellect. Isaiah 40: 12 states. New International Version
    Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Bro God is a mathematician, and a scientist, not a magician. There are PLENTY of scientists and intelligent people who believe in God AND evolution. I mean we have human history that goes back more than 5 thousand years so it's pretty absurd to think humans existed before the planet did. Believing in the facts we see in the world around us is not some attack on God. I find it so interesting how people take SOME parts of the Bible SUPER literal but then completely ignore other parts. Dyeteronamy 25:11,12 or how about levitcus 19:19 or leviticus 19:27? Or how about slavery? Do you own slaves? Ephesians 6:5 , leviticus 25:44-46... what about stoning a child to death for not listening? Deuteronomy 21:18-21... do you own more than a single shirt? Luke 3:11 ever made a crude joke? Ephesians 5:4... see I can quote Bible versus too but you'll just ignore those and say how it's not to taken literally or :"Jesus doesn't care about the old laws" ... suuurreee... look, science doesn't care about the Bible and it isn't attacking God. MEN wrote that book and it's been changed A BIT over the years so its certainly not infallible. weather U believe in God or not that should be self evident. Ofc, he only accepts the KJV of it, which had some....edits...put in to it when comparing with the previous version. Some of the books in the bible where Jesus' life is depicted were written by people that didn't live at the same time as Jesus.
      Now, I was raised Catholic. That does not mean that I deny science. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The insistence on depicting Science as an adversary of religion (in this case Christian religion) is baffling to me. The Bible is a set of allegories used in an ignorant time, written by ignorant people, to try to explain what was going on to other ignorant people. We can explain today, **scientifically**, some of the events described in the Bible.
      I think of it like this: the Bible is what you get if you ask for a primary schooler to describe more advanced scientific phenomena than he/she is prepared to explain. The primary schooler will resort to "its magic" explanation more often than not.

Dr Kent got it some premises right, although he has some flaws in his "debauchery". Prof Dave has it ALSO wrong, and on several aspects, BUT mostly due to each trying to overshadow the other, INSTEAD of solving the problem, ie State and provide evidence to the hypothesis, then DEBATE with a follow up on the next programme on facts, errors, ommissions. However, I understand his and Dr. Kent's thought process and believe this needs to be a series of discussions as these debates are NOT Solutionary. One debate must be on Chemistry, one on Biology, One on BIOCHEMISTRY, one on Physics evidence, One on ... are you getting the line of thought? I didn't get ANY solutions from this debate, as the REAL analysis wasn't yet discussed. They started, thats the best way to put it. However, reading some of YOUR comments Guys and Dolls ... WOW!!! It's the material architecture known as dark energy which serves as the scaffolding for the mathematical framework known as dark matter, which serves as the foundation for the materialization of ordinary matter. Think about the orbitals of a star around their galactic cores or even planets around stars. It's when you realize that material architecture is what keeps planets and stars in orbits it starts to make more sense. Then you realize that this physical domain is dependent on a hierarchy of domains that supersede it.
    Modern computational devices and networks allow us to see what a universe looks like from the outside in and this universe allows us to see what it looks like from the inside out. Using the combination of both we can begin to understand reality in greater depth. We then respect the hierarchical order that naturally emerges from such dynamic systems and bodies.

    The worst thing about Kent is how as he's talking as fast as he can, he peppers in little mocking jabs, and outright insults, like accusing Dave of child abuse. He tries to make you angry at him so you snap at him and he can accuse you of being an angry atheist who actually believes in god and just "hates religion" and "wants to sin" so he can claim a "moral" victory. He's a bad faith debater, and a troll, not a "Dr.", and certainly not an educator. For example: @ 31:12 Kent realizes that his usual tricks aren't working and Dave isn't getting bogged down in Kent's circular illogic, so he says "In your simple mind, blah blah blah." He's trying to make Dave angry so his arguments become illogical, because Kent's entire hustle is based in anti-logic.
