Great video Dave, what helped me to learn PT from PT faster was to
1. Put emphasis when speaking with Portuguese people that you want to speak Portuguese with them and not switch back to English for comfort and ease of conversation. This is a crucial point and I see a lot of my friends living here in Portugal stuck on their progress because of this.
2. Consume on a daily basis Portuguese content : RTP is a good source and free, also some but really limited amount of Netflix shows/movies in PT-PT.
3. Listen to Podcasts from PT either on popular platforms or CZcams channels.
4. Learn trough online or offline classes/courses of your choice, what fits with your needs, schedule and budget.
5. Have fun, don't be scared to make mistake and you'll get there!

Our Portuguese is notorious for its dictation difficulty, in counterpart to our brother variation, Brazilian Portuguese. Which most foreigners find easier to understand the latter.

Dave I’m going to tell you what I really like about you. You are living the life I was dreaming of when I was planning to moved to Portugal. Living with the locals. I was not interested in Lisbon Porto and some areas of The Algarve. I grew up in a small Island, living in a small town where everyone knew everyone and loved. Thanks for all the great videos you create showing us “Locals” living.

We just got back from our month in Portugal, last week. It was amazing and fun. So much of the language I do not yet know, but could add in bits here and there, beyond greetings or obrigado. What was funny - a few times people would correct my pronunciation, but I started to notice on obrigado specifically, differences that seemed more dialectical. I also noticed people just saying 'brigad' regularly, kind of like 'thanks'. Another place, a man greeted me. "Tarde." Afternoon.
Finally, I could also suggest, my wife had a translator app that helped us understand others, including church sermons. It hears a voice and translates in real time. Even better, she would practice her pronunciations with that app. The app thereby showed when her pronunciation was correct by understanding and translating the word. Very clever.
I’m in the US and take lessons 3 times a week from a lady in Lisboa for the past 7 months. I can read and write fairly well but damn I struggle with speaking. Reason is I don’t think in Portuguese, I have to think of the sentence in English then translate it. So by the time I actually get the sentence I want to say, the person would have lost interest and either left or switched to English…. I hope that by the time I move to PT in Oct. I’ll be good enough to be able to actually speak to someone. I do the same thing as far as write out sentences and watch RTP with PT subtitles. I also have a journal that I write what I did that day in Portuguese. It’s a fun language, but yeah it’s not easy…. Nothing worth doing is easy.
The older we are, the harder it is to learn things in such a natural and fluent way. But, language is communication and logic. Don't focus so much on learning the correct way. Focus on communicating and making your ideas understood. The rest, will come step by step, if you continue learning.
Also, learning a language without being in a place, forget it... That's impossible. In fact, when you come to Portugal, you will probably understand nothing that people say to you.
@@motttta I think that’s a stretch. I understand most videos I watch in Portuguese. I watch a lot of Portuguese TV/movies on RTP and understand a good amount of it. My teacher does say that the speaking part will come much faster once I’m immersed in it. I can put simple sentences together now, but I have to think about all the verbs and pronouns and such. The more I speak it with natives, the quicker that will come.

Speaking as a person (debatable) with some experience in helping people learn Portuguese as a foreign language, I don't think it's realistic to expect to be fluent in 5 months. It could be possible if you're a genius or if you're fluent in Spanish (although in this case you would also face the challenge of moving from "portuñol" to actual Portuguese). Learning Portuguese or any other language is a slow process that can be somewhat accelerated by working really hard and surrounding yourself with as much of the language as possible. But, speaking as a person (still debatable) with a CZcams channel, I also understand the need to have "clickbaity" thumbnails. :)
How is it debatable that you are speaking as a person? Is there a possibility you are speaking as a Cachalote?

Is the portuguese course still available?
I initially signed up for this class a while ago and had to wait until I got an email that enrollment was open. I suggest that if you're interested that you use the link otherwise you may have to wait to get into this popular class. I now have real incentive to get started as we're in the process of buying a sweet renovated stone cottage in central Portugal. Our plans of moving to Portugal full time within the next year or so are on track but so much to do! I'm going to combine Anita's class with Portuguese TV from Lingopie. They supply subtitles that you can click on for instant translation and other neat features. I'm hoping that the combination of the two will help make learning the language easier for me. Anita recommends that you watch Portuguese TV while taking the course as well. Thanks for the video, cheers!

I was conversational in Portuguese after two months in Brazil. Immersion with no English speakers around is always the fastest way, but not always an option.

n sei se foi mencionado, mas a idade conta... na minha idade não ia tentar aprender inglês, muito menos em 5 meses! para quem vem para cá de outro país com outra língua, na idade da reforma, será muito mais difícil aprender português... a não ser que se pratique diáriamente "café e pastel de nata faxavor" ao fim de uma semana já é "o costume" :D

I've noticed something funny (this is not criticism) in your channel description, you said: "Um cara chamado Dave". "Um cara" is Brazilian slang, ironic when your channel is about Portugal. I can tell you used Google Translator because it translates to pt-BR, not to pt-PT. Nothing wrong with using Translator, I just found this curious, in fact it can also help you or anyone learn more Portuguese as well as other languages.
Essa questão que parece ser arbitrária do Masculino e Feminino tem a ver com a Etimologia das palavras .
A Língua Portuguesa tem uma longa História por detrás . Para entender melhor certas questões conviria estudar o Latim ... Pouca gente o faz ... No entanto , um aspecto a reter é que o Latim tinha o género Neutro , que com o tempo foi absorvido ... Quando nós dizemos " Todos " , isso inclui o Masculino , o Feminino e o Neutro . Já o " Todas " expressa únicamente o Feminino .
Explicar porque uma palavra é Feminina ou Masculina é complicado , pois isso tem a ver com a palavra latina que lhe deu origem e não só ...
Por exemplo , a palavra " barba " veio da palavra latina " barbam " ( que está no caso Acusativo ) ... Com o tempo perdeu o " m " .
Se tivesse saído do caso latino Nominativo " barbus " , já não terminaria em " a " e não seria inserida no Feminino ...
O caso do termo " bigode " parece ter origens obscuras ... Contudo há alguns que defendem que tem origem germânica ... O que também é bem possível .
Já que imediatamente a seguir a termos sido colonizados pelos Romanos falando Latim , fomos colonizados por povos Germânicos , como os Suevos e os Visigodos .
Portanto , as palavras do português têm diferentes origens ... e com a evolução e adaptação agora acabam por ser inseridas ou no Feminino ou no Masculino , que também representa o género Neutro .
Compreendo que resulte confuso , mas há toda uma história linguística a ter em conta ... E todas as incongruências , aparentes e reais , só poderão ser superadas com o uso e treino persistente da língua portuguesa , ou seja " usar sem moderação " ou afincadamente , até tudo se tornar naturalmente fluído e fácil .

É mais complicado do que o referido atrás, porque por ex. "árvore", em Castelhano é masculino, assim como em Francês; "nariz" em Castelhano é feminino, ao contrário de em Português, Francês e Italiano, etc.

Dave can I learn Brazilian Portuguese to speak to Native Portuguese in Portugal? I can only find Brazilian version of Portuguese and I love your videos about Portugal is such a cool and Beautiful Country
I am not an expert in the matter at all, but from what I read online, while they will be able to understand you just fine, the reverse is not true and you may struggle to understand what's being said to you if you learn Brazilian Portuguese.

Find what and where?
You can find European Portuguese, usually there's an option. But, yes, Brazilian will work too.
@@homyce You are right. I knew Brazilian Portuguese before coming here many years ago and it was hard to understand the people at first. I never felt comfortable in a conversation with a Portuguese person as I did in Brazil. Now, after more than thirty years here I still don't have the same comprehension I had when I lived in Brazil, but that might be due to having a different age, both physically and brain-wise.
@@AndNowIWrite The variety of Portuguese taught on both DuoLingo and Babbel is Brazilian Portuguese. It all boils down to 215 million speakers vs 10 million speakers. Preparing these courses costs money and it is probably not economically viable to prepare a separate course for European Portuguese.
Difficult languages to learn are the most interesting!
It is the vast amount of verbs and their pairings that I get frustrated with =)
seems like we need to define "fluent" here. from learning English as my second language, for who knows how many years now, I can say that it is very difficult to become fluent. first of all you need to master grammar structures so they pop up effortless. but that's the easiest part. something teachers / courses don't like to talk about to not to scary you away is you'll need eventually to learn a lot of words. native english speaker for example knows from 20k to 35k words. and if you want to become fluent you'll have to get as close as you can. add conjugations (PT) to this and it becomes obvious that getting fluent is difficult. which is fine. just be honest and get prepared for a long journey.

One year? Not enough to speak English fluently, let alone Portuguese, which is a way more complex and difficult language!
1. The alphabet is basically the same which is good
2. Learn the personal pronouns
3. Learn easy and easy to remember words
4. Do it again and again with increasingly difficult words and so on...
4. Watch CZcams videos with Portuguese (European in this case) language AND with rigorous legends...
5. Then the verbs...
6. Be pacient.
And my friends thought my taking 4 years of Latin was a waste of time 😂

Need you to learn Portuguese?
It's not that important to say the correct gender of a noun: if a person say "o barba", instead of "a barba", everybody will understand you! It's something that you'll learn with practice and hearing people talking! In fact there's no logic when it comes to genders; it's something that differs from country to country, for instance: tree (árvore) is feminine in Portuguese and it's masculine both in Spanish and French; nose (nariz) is masculine in Portuguese, French and Italian and it's feminine in Spanish; smile, (sorriso) is masculine in Portuguese and French an feminine in Spanish. As you can see, it's even nothing to do with Latin, because things has changed so much!
Não é prudente generalizar assim. Com efeito, quando há contexto e boa vontade compreende-se bem quando o género está incorrecto. Contudo, analise estas palavras isoladamente: pêra/pero, ponte/ponto/ponta, caminha/caminho, lixo/lixa, banco/banca, conto/conta, cola/colo, porta/porte/porto, poço/poça, etc... Infelizmente, quando aprendemos uma nova língua esquecemo-nos muito rapidamente (ou nem damos por isso) das imensas incongruências, incorências, irregularidades e «estranhezas» da nossa própria língua materna, que aprendemos todos (felizmente) SEM esforço e da qual temos uma pronúncia impecável.

What type of a language learner are you? enthusiast purist? sure then learn European Portuguese (a dying, obscure version of Portuguese). Are you the practical type? Then learn the Brazilian Portuguese because even in Portugal it will be the main version in couple of decades.
Ridiculous comment. And please note too that African variants are much closer to European Portuguese than to the Brazilian variant. They will all exist long after you are in your grave.
