Han Solo Kills Greedo (Original)

- Han Solo shoots first killing Greedo Original. This is the original scene where Han Solo shoots first and Greedo doesn't even shoot.... because he's dead. It was meant to be the ultimate badass entrance showing Hans true character, there is several shots of him pulling out the gun meaning he was meaning to do it and it was not self defense. In the remake how does Greedo even miss for directly in front of Han anyway. Also in the remake the Hans head jerks very quickly and impossibly to the right. This is the original, the way it should have stayed.
The original scene is the correct one because Solo HAD to shoot first because he knew Greedo was about two seconds away from blasting him.
Couldn't agree more!
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but Han learns this lesson from Beckett in SOLO
@@__scrambled_egg_ yup
Solo shot first. That seems pretty clear. What seems VERY suspect is the idea that Solo HAD to shoot first. Let's review several things that seem to contradict that point:
:00 (beginning of the clip) If Greedo planned on shooting Han regardless of the interaction, then why didn't Greedo simply shoot him as soon as he saw Han. No, it would not have been as "epic" as having a long, drawn out conversation with your adversary, but we are not debating whether is was epic or not. We are debating whether Han "HAD" to kill Greedo.
:21 Han states, "Ya, but this time, I've got the money". Meaning, this is something that Han has done before and this is habit for Han to cheat people. His morals/values are suspect.
:23 Greedo says, "If you give it [the money] to me, I might forget I found you." We know very little about Greedo's character except that he is a bounty hunter and wants to earn the reward for giving Han to Jabba. Now, is that dead or alive??? That is unclear. If Han would have given Greedo the money would Greedo have killed Han anyway??? Again, that is unclear.
:43 Greedo states, "You can tell that to Jabba. He may only take your ship." Meaning, it is likely that you will be alive when I present you to Jabba. Very suspect.
:49 Greedo states " That's the idea." Referring to the comment Han made about Jabba taking his ship and that they only way that would happen is over Han's dead body." Again, this wasn't Greedo stating that he would kill Han. This was Greedo acknowledging that Jabba would have to kill Han in order for Jabba to take his ship. Really, it doesn't have much to do about the ship either. It's simply an acknowledgement that Jabba will [most likely] kill Han. This is not for Greedo to decide, but he is amused by the idea.
1:10 Han states, "I'm sorry about the mess." Why apologize for something that is not your fault.
I think the above analysis lends credence to the evidence that Han did NOT have to shoot Greedo, but did so to get out of being taken to Jabba and answering to Jabba for "dropping" the shipment because of the imperial cruiser he encountered.
@@preferablystephen480 very good, but at the same time, Han shot him for a reason. Further evidence includes that Han was already looking to kill Greedo AND Jabba,. Reply if you want the evidence
I think it is better when Han shoots first, as it puts more emphasis of him being a scoundrel and a criminal, which is how we like him.
Not a scoundrel, just not stupid.
Not shooting first means losing your ship and most likely life in jabbas house of horrors. Only an idiot wouldn't shoot first. Greedo knows the risks.
@@miketrav Greedo made the classic movie villain mistake of revealing his intentions.
Yes, I bet you have
+ThePokemonSoldier I AGREE!!!
Errr....
You're allowed to shoot first if a criminal is pointing a gun at you.
In this case, by the standards of the law, Han is the criminal. As he is the smuggler (an illegal trade) and bounty hunting is a legal profession backed by governments.
@@Mr-Tibbster not really. Jabba was a gambler and a thug who hired a bounty Hunter to go after a guy who did not pay a gambling debt. That's no different than your local street Hustler mob guy sending a goon out to get you if you don't pay after losing a bet. there's nothing legal about any of this. you make it sound like Han was found guilty of a crime by the government and escaped and they sent the bounty Hunter out to get him that would be legal, not this
@@miketrav The Hutts "are" the government on Tatooine.
@@Mr-Tibbster jabba is not affiliated with the government. He was a thug gangster. Case closed
@@Mr-Tibbster nope he was a powerful gangster with government and political ties but he was not a government entity you can look it up . He was a John Gotti type
George said he changed it because he didn't want Han to kill someone in cold blood, but he didn't. Greedo literally told Han that he was about to kill him, and he had a blaster pointed at him. Han was completely justified.
But apparently a scene where a character murders innocent children is somehow more justified. Nice one, George
Sometimes I wonder if George Lucas even comprehends his own movie...
Han pull a dirty move but highly necessary for his own survival.
He was just capturing him (even if even that might result in his death as even Jabba cannot be counted on to merciful ), Han still had some right to shoot a bounty hunter who had a gun pointed at him and was about to detain him on behalf of crime boss.
Not to mention Han isnt supposed to be perfect (he's not meant to be as straight edge as Obi wan or even Luke that's the point), especially not at the time of this scene. In fact thatsthe real reason changing this scene was bullshit (han isnt supposed to be as straight edge as Obi wan; especially not yet.)
@@smoggymoose9843its not justified. the whole point of the scene is to show how evil anakin has become whereas here george doesn't want to portray Han as being the bad guy
Han shot... period.
First implies Greedo fired his weapon at all.
Yep Greedo never fired
Agreed. I always found it really strange people think Freedom shot at all.
"Han shot first" means "Han shot before Greedo had been able to do it".
This semantic nonsense is just nitpicking by the grammar police.
It is extremely clear what "Han shot first" is supposed to mean in the context of this scene.
Zack Cross… ❤️
Some people have been watching the special editions for so long that they can forget that Greedo never shot at all.
I love how in Solo, he shoots Beckett first, showing us that Han is always the first to pull the trigger when he knows what's coming 😉

This is awesome. From the moment he runs into Greedo, he knows he's going to shoot him under the table. Notice how Han leads Greedo to the table, he's not backed into it by Greedo.
Leg on the table to further block his vision, reaching up at the wall behind him as a misdirect. It's very calculated.
Maybe, but it looks like Greedo pushes the gun into his chest to make him back up to the table/chair.
Reasons why this version works
1 it shows Han is someone who will shoot first at the first sign of trouble
2 it builds character, by the end when he returns to help Luke it shows how he has become a lot more trusting than before
It shows Han is a survivor and knows how to read the room and deal with danger.
Reasons why it doesn't work
Greedo talks too much and reveals his intentions causing his death instead of having shot Han from the moment he saw him
Great analogy 👏 👍🏾
@@srpatata1523 The deleted scenes and novelization point that out. Jabba hired cheap, low-qual bounty hunters.
@@mzmadmike very true my friend
The best version. Han had every right to shoot first; I mean, Greedo, a known scumbag, made it clear he was there to kill Han, and Han simply made the first move. I don’t see why Lucas absolutely HAD to “fix” it
Smart of Han to mention he had money. It shifted Greedo from being immediately murderous to trying to get hold of the cash. Greed cost him his life.
Kind of in his name- GREEDo. Then again george was never the master of subtlety, as much as we love him
I gotta respect Greedo for keeping that smile on his face until the moment he died. He’s so happy to be here.
Plot twist: Han didn't shoot at all, Greedo shot but missed, then fell asleep because he was tired.
And someone was smoking like crazy. R.I.P lungs
Watched this at age 2,3,4,5,6,7,8...NEVER ONCE thought twice about this scene, and never thought Han was any less a good guy. I wonder if anyone ever did...
No one , ever
Nope you’re right
This is the version I saw for many years long before they updated these movies. Never once did I think this made Han a murderer or or cold blooded person. This was clearly self-defense. I always understood that Han was just defending himself.
I like how cunning Solo is. He is simply playing along with Greedo and led him to a table and manages to distract him by talking while he secretly gets his gun under the table. Maybe he can't read minds but he knew Greedo was going to shoot him regardless whenever Jabba gets paid or not.

‘Babaloo!’ Is how we always heard it as kids.
Lucas made very dumb move by altering this scene.
@@tavellclinton9256 Yes
@@TheLostwaveGuy He ruined his good name by making this change! The truth is that only Han shot and Greedo did not!
I never understood why they changed this scene. I know George Lucas said he didn’t want Han to look like a “cold blooded killer”, but in this scene he’s perfectly justified in killing Greedo because it’s in self defense. If Han didn’t kill Greedo he’d be dead
I love him for creating Star Wars in the first place, but I genuinely believe George Lucas went certifiably insane sometime between 1983 and 1997. I have no other explanation for how such a visionary filmmaker could so thoroughly undermine his own work.
His divorce
"Insane Lucas" still produced works 10X better than the sequels we got lol
He was not the visionary filmmaker you might imagine from the original Star Wars. His original cut was unwatchable. The editing team saved the film. And his divorce may have had something to do with it, since his wife was one of the editors.
He did to be politically correct. Spielberg too.
I think it can easily happen. We've probably all been in a situation where we're so absorbed or immersed in a task that we get tunnel vision and obsess over small details and make decisions that make sense to you at that scale, in isolation, and from your perspective, even though they appear nonsensical to everyone else who can see the bigger picture all at once.
I like how the effects were super over the top and instead of a shot it was a literal explosion that killed Greedo
Notice how Han is picking at the wall while turning off the safety trigger on the pistol so that Greedo wouldn't notice?
Great use of misdirection.
@@anymaru I agree.

Shadow Croissant probably because his heart was racing and he was trying to walk away cool but really he was sweaty (palms are sweaty, moms spaghetti) like that scene in Indiana Jones where he’s sweating from shooting first.
Reminds me of Army of Darkness, after Ash kills the witch and the Wise Man repeats his plea. Ash does a "Bruce Lee" cooldown move.
Mos Eisley was basically a Far West town of spaghetti western movies but with space cowboys and alien outlaws hanging in the cantina.
I love Lucas’s BS story about how he always wanted Greedo to shoot first but couldn’t do it because of lack of technology. I mean, huh?
Yea. Thats Lucas straight up lying. I worshipped the guy as a kid growin up in the 80s. Watched every interview he gave. Once he started getting close to making the prequels his stories started to change. And after the prequels started to release...his stories changed ALOT.

I guess George Lucas made the Special Edition decision to make Geedo shoot too so that he got a fair chance, or to make Han not look like a jerk. Either way, terrible shot on Geedo's behalf. Is it even necissary? Geedo did basically say he was going to kill Han anyway, so Han had enogh reason to shoot.
If somebody is holding me gun-point saying they're going to kill me or have me killed, I would shoot them dead. Any half-reasonable person would do the same. If you were in the situation in real life, it wouldn't even be a question. The first second I had my chance.
Yea even if greedo shot (which he didn’t) how tf you gonna miss a nigga at point blank range
there's not even a blaster smudge on the wall behind. nerds may fight. but we do it with logic
"Even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?" is taken from the scene / dialogue with Jabba the Hutt / Declan Mulholland. Harrison's voice has slightly different pitch and volume.
This scene was changed again in Star Wars ANH released on DisneyPlus! I kid you not.
I remember seeing the remasters in 2000 and when Greedo fired the entire cinema went “W.T.F!!!” in unison…
the original shot was perfect... to a first time viewer you don't know who dies at first because of the angle of the shot, but then you see greedo fall and then you know... way cooler than greedo shot first or "Maclunkey"
It's great because the explosion occurs while Han is still speaking, making it a bit of a "jump scare" to the audience. A lot of these classic movies from the late 70s to mid 80s had such editing that made the audience genuinely surprised.
And han keeps his neck vertebrae in tact
Finally. The version I saw has Han do this weird seizure jerk and it looks weird. And the original fits his character more.
According to my understanding of current U.S. law, Han was being threatened with grave bodily harm via the drawn pistol of Greedo. I’m not sure if Han had the appropriate permits for the laser gun in whatever region he was in, but if Tatooine was a “stand your ground” region, I think the shooting was likely risky but probably justified. We would need to hear from a Tatooine defense attorney skilled in weapons charges to know better, though. There are some variables in this case, right? 🤷🏼♂️
"Take yer swing."
-Han Solo
The correct version !
why the hell did the remake have greedo shoot first?
Ya compitely silly. How the hell can he miss from that range anyway? I guess blaster are only useful if you have put the gun 5 cm up your opponents ass.
I heard that Lucas decided that Han shouldn't be a cold blooded killer since he married Lea. Which is total bullshit, because the only member of the cast - not main cast, cast - who wouldn't do the same in the same situation is C3PO.
Dragonlover553 Also, Geedo said he was going to kill Han anyway.
WillieManga yeah. So let us all unite in thinking George Lucas had an aneurysm or something and agree that Han shot first.
Lucas' original intention - that Han shot first - is clearly shown in BOTH versions. Notice as the camera focuses on Han reaching for his blaster, the line - "Do you think I had a choice?" - is great foreshadowing and heightens the tension. This line, when combined with the image, is the only thing we really need to still stay on Han's side. He is justified in shooting first. You could say he's directly speaking to the audience. "Yeah, I shot first. Do you think I had a choice?" Obviously this is Lucas' original intent. Then the age of political correctness came along, and he got sick of explaining why Han shot first to kids at dinner parties, and he decided to appease with the appalling, low-grade imitation of a scene that appears in the special editions.
Don't worry, guys. They fixed it again. They tied it in with something from the Prequels. Totally fixed, now.

🤣
Han: Over *my* dead body.
Greedo: Fine! I can wait 3 movies.
It's so much better like this. For a split second makes you wonder who shot who, until the smoke dissapears and Han Solo is still alive
The remake is so odd; his neck does a rapid unnatural reflex snap 'dodging' Greedo's shot from point blank range, yet ironically Greedo's shot would have missed anyway. Seeing the blaster bolts is cool... but the original scene is definitely better.
And Han's ear would be ringing after that terrible aim of a shot.
When Star Wars wasn’t for the hyper sensitive YA reading crowd, it was a bad ass space western with eastern film touches
Star wars was always a kids movie.
It was a family movie at least. Not a kid's movie.
Bloody arm and scorched skeletons. You know - for kids!
I would argue it is more based on the old samurai films
Even a lot of those earlier YA novels from the 70s and 80s dealt with pretty heavy topics, and didn't shy away from tragedy or violence. Everything is so soft nowadays.

I just came here because I love the way Greedo sounds
Making Greedo shoot first was ridiculous, but I don't see how it changed Han's character. People seem to think Han shooting first was important for character development, because it shows he was a cold blooded murderer, whereas Greedo shooting first made it self defence. But even when Han shot first, it was still clear self defence, as Greedo was still pointing a gun at him.

I suppose that served Greedo right for bullying Anakin by saying that he cheated in the Boonta Eve Podrace.

The whole Greedo character is pretty amazing to be honest. Pretty cool how they did the voice, the mask is a pretty amazing design and this small part did make Rhodians one of the most familiar and commonly seen Star Wars species.
It's what I miss the most in the sequel trilogy: The familiar aliens. No Rhodians, Twi'leks, Trandoshans or other super familiar species of the original trilogy are seen. I think there's this one pilot guy of a species also shown in the prequels and that's it.
