2024 Maserati GranTurismo vs The Cheapest GranTurismo You Can Buy

  • The 2024 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo ($300,249 in Canada, $230,115 in the US) is up against its older and much cheaper ancestor, the 2008 Maserati GranTurismo ($35,000 in Canada, $26,016 USD converted). The new model may have lost the growling Ferrari V8 of yesteryear, but it has been replaced by a much faster and more powerful twin-turbo V6 ‘Nettuno’ engine.
Over 100 horsepower separates these two GranTurismos, and the new model has lots of new tech and engineering to bring it into modern day. But does the new GranTurismo succeed as a worthy successor to its roaring V8 progenitor and live up to the hefty price tag? And is the older Maserati worth the much depreciated value? Thomas and James hope to find out! Subscribe!
Big thank you to the wonderful team at Vehicle Direct Group for lending us the 2008 Maserati GranTurismo. Check them out here: vehicle-direct.ca to buy, or sell luxury cars!

The only issues I have had in over 2 years of owning my 2012 Maserati GranTurismo S with the even better 4.7L engine is the air conditioning and rough running and warning lights on the dash. The A/C compressor went out and was sorted for about $1,100 with an independent A/C shop that does work on high end cars and the other issue was fixed with the installation of a new $300 battery. The TPMS light is always on but the previous owner fixed it and it still broke. It can’t recalibrate and so the light stays on even though the system gives accurate pressure readings. I have just learned to live with it. I also have the sticky buttons which also happens to Ferraris as well. But none of that matters when you put it in Sports mode and let her rip. The noises she makes are GLORIOUS!!

Bringing back memories :) I remember 15-17 years ago when I went to the Frankfurt auto show together with my brother. In the evening we went for a walk in the city. It was very quiet in the neighborhood and we wanted to cross one street. But there was this engine sound of a car coming fast, or perhaps a harley. We kept on waiting for couple of seconds, the sound was getting louder and louder but still no car to be seen. Then came this beautiful GranTurismo. The driver wasn't even speeding but the car sounded like thunder. I bit if Simon & Garfunkel would've been there then "the sound of silence" would have called "the sound of GranTurismo"

I am lucky to have a GT cabrio with 4,7l engine already 13 years old and, surprise surprise, it's absolutely reliable and very cheap to maintain. All you need is a good, competent service, outside official network, and the cost of maintaining Maserati in a perfect shape is below the cost of diesel S-Klasse or Volvo XC 90 that I also happen to own. You guys did a great job, but you got a creepy wreck for the test, no wonder you disliked it;) In Europe these cars are more and more expensive now, as it is the last V8 and the last Maserati's V8 cabrio. I just love that car and the heavenly, gorgeous, outstanding, splendid noise it produces!

"A Revving Maserati Engine has a Biological Effect on Women. A study conducted by British insurance company Hiscox reveals that the sound of a revving Maserati engine has a biological effect on women. Those who took part in the study listened to a variety of engine sounds from a number of cars, and after hearing the Maserati engine, all of the female test subjects had higher testosterone levels in their saliva. High testosterone levels can be indicative of a stirred libido. Thank you guys for this inspiring test. I‘m owning the old GranTurismo but the latest iteration from 2018. With the 4.7 Litre V8 with 460BHP and the much quicker ZF 6 Speed Gearbox (it hits you in the Neck in Sportmode above 5000 RPM), with the much quicker Steering, with Skyhook Dampers (soft or stiff), with the Sportseats, Rearview Camera and, last but not least, the Touchscreen Nav with Apple Carplay. This Car, for what as it was new, i’ve payed "just" 120.000 €, is the much better Competitor to the new one. And with that in Mind, the new GT for just double the Price, i can not go with the newer. Never Mind, what the 0-60 time of the new GT is. It simply doesn‘t matter, if you hear the V8 screaming. I‘ve driven it for 150.000km and never had a big issue. Just small ones like a Parkingsensor not working.

The original GT was succeeded by the GTS. From around 2013 onwards, there was then the face lifted version also (GT Sport), and these generally don't have the variator issues that the older 4.2 version had. Then there was a third face lift model with updated infotainment, reversing camera etc. There were other cosmetic packages you could get (MC Sportline) on these, and of course there was the hardcore MC Stradale (the only one really that hasn't suffered the extreme depreciation the others have - although, still depreciated). I own the GT Sport version with the 4.7L and the facelift. It's fantastic. My God it's slow - it handles like a bus, I get smoked by almost any other even slightly 'sporty' car, and well, you can guess the maintenance costs I'm sure. But these older cars are future classics. They may never (and probably won't ever) appreciate in financial value - but the aesthetic value (both visual and sonic) is the epitome of beauty. Whilst the rear end does look dated, the front end, with the long bonnet covering the V8 which is placed just behind the front axel looks stunning. And the sound - well - the truth is that that is the be all and end all of this car - I can't think of another V8 that comes close (sorry Jaguar f-type fans!) I think I'd only be disappointed if a v10 LFA pulled up alongside - and, well, the likelihood of that happening is near-on zero! When you drive somewhere in this car, every time, without fail, its an experience. You'll hold your breath a touch, waiting for the next maintenance light, but once you've mentally hurdled that, this touring car is a dream to drive. It's a Maserati! It's history says it all. Fantastic video guys!

When I was a teenager, wandering through auto shows, Maserati stood out to me as just worlds above everything else in the interior. They were covered in beautiful leather with fancy stitching that nothing else could hold a candle to. They were sister cars to Ferraris but with all the focus put on luxury.
Here we are, a few decades later, and I still think of those cars when I sit in a Porsche or other car that's gone the extra mile with the interior and am thankful that, in my mind's world at least, Maserati set the stage for what we should expect there and the rest of the automotive world finally caught up. I look around and thing "Oh man... this is Maserati levels of beautiful!"
Of course, they're no longer sisters to Ferraris... and their interiors aren't a big step ahead of everyone else... so I don't really know what draws people to them anymore... but they'll always have a special place in my heart for what they used to be.

I had an opportunity to sit in a Maserati a few years back. The thing that struck me most was how ordinary the interior was. From the controls to touch surfaces, none of it was all that different from my own vehicle. I guess I expected more custom parts, to be amazing by how everything felt and worked. Instead, it felt like any other car.

I really like the new Maserati steering wheel. It looks fantastic! Very reminiscent of BMW's older M-Wheel, but with Ferrari-style knobs and Neptune's Trident in the middle. Despite all Maserati's issues and massively over-priced nature, they still have the best logo and font in the auto industry.

Have a 2009 GT S (28k miles). I love finding Maserati bashing videos (not that you guys technically did that) and often find it hilarious how much of a bad rap these cars get for being "old" or falling apart or so expensive to operate. Maseratis, like marriages, give you back what you put into them. ;) Love your videos. Keep it up. (I would also for CERTAIN go for MC20 over Trofeo haha). You guys gave me a good idea, should go find a Vantage V12 this upcoming spring.

As an owner of a Maserati QP 2008 Sport GTS, I can say preparation is everything. I put money aside for its yearly repairs, and have always been prepared for the worst (I charge the batteries, make sure the tires are on the right pressure, don't kick it when its cold etc.), but so far have been very surprised by how little maintenance was required. The tire pressure sensors go out, thats a given on all these old maserati's, don't bother replacing them. Brakes etc. are expensive, just like any other sports car. Besides that, solid as a rock, now going over 100.000km, and I haven't paid much more on maintenance than on my BMW 3 series (X5 is actually more expensive!). The feeling however I get when driving it, and just looking at it, is very different than any other car I've owned.

      Can't agree more.
      I got rx7 fd3s and granturismo s both.
And surprisingly feel that they are very similar, first timeless outlook, second bad and not accurate rumors. Most problems were cos of engineering design and immature driver behavior. If they got a mature owner, both cars won't be unreliable

I drove a beautiful Maserati MC Stradale for 5 years and to be fair, NEVER had a issue with it. Normal Maintenance. I didn't WISH for a female passenger in the seat like you two yammered about and couldn't finish your sentence. I enjoyed it for what it was. A glorious symphony of V8 goodness that my passengers exclaimed, "Damn, it feels like zero to 60 is an EVENT." Enough said....

It's a damn shame that Stellantis prevent Alfa Romeo from building higher end sportscars (or even large luxury sedans like a modern day 166) that might undermine the Maserati product offerings. I think that is really daft.

I have GranCabrio and it is literally the best car for fun driving if it's taken care of. Frequent oil changes is the key. The biggest issue is the suspension, since I am based in Prague and just like in any historical city there are cobbled streets... Suspension is always in under stress and the repair is pricy. Despite that, this car is amazing if you do the maintenance frequently.

But yes, I had to spend 6k to fix sticky buttons, and some other minor issues and sold it.
Sticky buttons were a problem in all 3 of them, if only there was a good solution!!!
Because they are the best car I ever had in terms of pure connection

The ending was perfect. I am a bit partial to Maseratis. My dad worked for them in the 80s and was even flown to Italy to take a tour of the factory. As much as I like the V8 soundtrack I like the twin turbo V6 as it gives me BiTurbo vibes. Its alot of damn money tho thats for sure.

Had the option of buying a Mazerati Quattroporte or a Merc E550 coupe as a sports grand tourer. I have a long experience going back to the 1970s of Italian cars and their reliability issues , especially the electrics, and maintenance costs. I chose the Merc and have zero regrets. It is now 12 years old, a superb, utterly reliable, quality car which is a delight to drive/ tour across Europe.
