I have a learning disability called Dyslexia. It is so severe that when I was finally diagnosed post graduating from medical school that my doctors said I should not have been able to pass high school, let alone medical school. I have suffered from a lifelong academic failure and have failed more than anyone I have ever known in a university or medical school. I have been told my teachers, advisors and colleagues that I am a failure, a waste of time, and I can never make it. Somehow I graduated without disability accommodations. Even the government for the disabled refused to grant me accommodations because they do not believe someone with my condition could have ever passed high school, so I must have cheated. The government department for the disabled refused to accommodate a disabled. And after all this, now I get to help save lives during the world’s Covid-19 pandemic, so do not ever let anyone talk you out of your dream. My dream started when I was 5 and people are alive because this 5 yr old boy never knew how to quit. And I am now a new father and my son was born during the year of the pandemic 2020. I will teach him how to never quit.

I like the last part that says "Whatever the results... you'll have gained greater knowledge and understanding." Learning to appreciate the growth journey and reframing outcomes that seem different from our expected results may really help in taking on unfamiliar challenges we find uncomfortable with. It's like 'playing the game, for the game itself'.

Everyone around you at school is trying to convince you that every grade, every quiz, every competition is the be all and end all of your life and that school is everything and means so much but that's really not true. Its hard in that environment like the vid says, but honestly believe me when I say school is the time to mess up and no one will even look at your school results once you have a higher qualification etc, there's always another chance, just go one step at a time. :)

I am looking for something to help me because in middle school you need to talk a lot. My biggest insecurity is my voice. It is very hard to understand me so that is another reason I don’t talk. Trauma is tricky and going mute sounds like it was a coping mechanism. For that I would look up "resiliency steps" and "resiliency assets". If you don't use or practice anything it won't improve...so make sure you do speak (I like the suggestion of reading out loud), sing, seriously schedule and practice the exercises your speech teacher gives you, and talk with the closest people who have been encouraging you to speak the most. If there's one teacher who seems genuinely interested, maybe ask them to meet individually to talk and tutor.

Confidence comes from experience. The way to develop that experience is to celebrate *effort* instead of *achievement*. The Persians found a way around the blockade at Thermopylae thanks to the help of a spy, and the Spartan defenders were slaughtered to the last man, but their defeat is celebrated while that more successful defense of Athens is mostly forgotten - because success isn't ultimately what's important.

Be selfish. Be crude and mean to people. Express the weirdest shit that comes to your mind in any way you wanna. Imitate people who don't give a fuck. These all seem like bad ideas, but they do counter social anxiety. If it becomes a way of life, you won't feel bad. If it doesn't, then it'll just be a phase. The end result should be the same : being comfortable with yourself in social situations.

    Some of my advice:
    1. Listen to some music, make your own baddie, confidence boosting playlist.
    2. Try and say yes to a challenge, even if its just going outside. Its best to try and enjoy life to its limit ♡
    3. Try and connect with some old friends, or some family. Having some conversations with anyone really helps boosting social skills.

Rappel down a stairway, get "lost" in a small section of woods, tip a canoe over in shallow water... Seems to be a fast track to confidence and a building block to more adventure...and more confidence.

'keep trying' is what you say, but our current system doesn't really provide much opportunities for that.
You fail the uni entrance exams, you are done for. Only a very small limited number of failures are accepted in school before you are expelled. One mistake might kick out of the company just before your idea could have turned you into a millionaire. How. Are. We. Supposed to keep trying?

But that's exactly what you need to do because once you give up you fail. There is no time limit to a degree, you can always resit, what's important is to learn from the mistakes so you can improve yourself. It's only when you blame others or have the victim mindset and stop trying is when you have truly failed. You must control your mindset, stay focused and keep working hard relentlessly. That is how you keep trying.

Another point to add, which I find very useful. Instead of wondering, "Do I have confidence?" or "How to get confidence/be confident?", just don't think about it. You already have confidence inside of you, and whenever you don't feel confident, it's because you are throwing your confidence away. Don't think so much about whether you are confident, or whether you can do it. Just try. Just go for it. JUST DO IT. (not sponsored by Nike)

This isn't an easy thing to do, huh?
For many people, it's not easy to wake up and go to work every day, but they do. For many people, it's not easy to deal with relationship problems, but they do. Sad thing is, many people go through a lot of un-productive pain. Pain that happens, and leads to no improvements. Nothing gets better from the pain.
We are all going to experience pain no matter what (unless we literally stay high 24/7, or intensely distract ourselves, in either case we will eventually come down from the high and still have all the same problems we used to have). But there is productive and unproductive pain.
There is pain that is worth your time, that will help you create the kind of future *you* want, and unproductive pain, that adds nothing to your life.
Since we will all experience pain no matter what, we might as well make sure the pain we do experience is leading us to something better - something that we actually want - in the long run.
Whether something is easy or hard rarely goes through my mind, actually. All I care about is what I want to do. When I find something I want to do, it doesn't matter if it's hard, I'm going to do it. Through doing it, I'll learn how to more efficiently do it. Take push ups for example. My form was wrong for a month. Then I learned the right way and now experience less pain and build muscle more efficiently. Working out is now easier.
Figure out a goal that really speaks to you (if you don't have one - then make your goal figuring out what your passions are). Set your sights on it. Remove can and can't from your vocabulary. There is only will try or won't try. And start going after it. There was a time where scientists believed it was impossible to run a mile in under 4 minutes. Until a runner did it. Do you think the runner said "I can do this" or "I can't do this"? He can't tell the future, and neither can any of us. Instead he decided "I am going to try." And he kept trying till he made it.
Make mistakes. Fuck it up. Try over and over again. Realize it's not what you're passionate about. Go back to the drawing board and figure out another passion. Try again. Make more mistakes. Fuck it up. Learn from it. Change your approach. Keep trying until you win.
If you find something you want badly enough, you can decide "Either I'm going to accomplish this, or I'm going to die trying."

And that feels great, because then I can just tell everyone I'm not a big deal, and actually guide them to victory with the knowledge aquired here. There are so many people I know that are better than me at stuff, older than me, but that consider me their "mentor" because I guided them to what they are now.

There are several tips to try
Work out why you suffer from shyness - the first step in solving a problem is to understand why it is there.
Be at ease about yourself - this makes it less difficult when you meet others.
Challenge youself - you will become more confident by taking action - especially by doing activities which stretch your boundaries.

25 years old and still trying to be confident in myself, since I know that it's holding myself back and preventing me from being who I know I can be. Hopefully I will be able to turn confidence into a habit instead of self-doubt.

I been so mislead my whole life by my parents everytime I felt confident they called me arrogant so now whenever I have to be I just don’t know how. Which is why I searched up what is confidence and I saw this video. Watching this really made me remember that being confident is okay that it’s a good thing and that it’s not an arrogant way of feeling good about myself. I hope everyone who’s been in my situation can find it in themselves to finally be confident to face life head on!

By you replying to this thread, you have got this, well done. Don't look for blame, maybe your folks had it hard back in the day. My Dad said to me: point a finger at someone and 3 fingers are pointing back at ya!...keep your faith..

arrogance is simply exaggerating in feeling that you're better than people and looking down on them.

When I feel stressed or anxious I simply talk to myself. For some people it might sound psychopatic to talk to yourself but for me it sooths me and I feel like I've talked it out of myself instead of going to a person. Of course I dont speak loudly, Just under my breath but it helps a lot.

Self talk, or positive self talk is a technique that is taught by psychologists. As long as you aren't babbling in public it's completely healthy. Another level is to do some self talk while looking in the mirror. I encourage people to self talk out loud before a new challenge such as rock climbing. I can help them pick out and verbalize what they have control of, what skills they have, what safety measures are being taken, what things could "go wrong" but still be safe, and really work on the thought quadrant of "total behavior".
