- I decided to use some old laptop hardware I had as a Linux development computer. Since it would be acting like a desktop computer, I needed to build a case for it.
Materials:
1/4th" MDF
Transparent Plexiglass
Nuts and bolts
Flat straight aluminum extrusion
Superglue
Weldbond
High-Gloss Latex white paint

this video deserves more views and likes, great built dude well done.
And this guy deserves more subs also
Good job Keith, I really dig it
Nice work Keith,thanks!
Nice craftmanship
fantastic build
Great job keith. Just made a case out of 2mm thick aluminim and it cracked along the seams so its pretty jank , your plexi window gave me the idea to box it in with plexi ! Wish me luck
Hey man, great build. Super inspirational vid. Liked and subbed.
I luv resourcefulness like this =)
Great idea! I always see fairly new laptops in the classifieds for like $50 just because the screens are broken.
Yeah
Thanks for this video, good job!
dang that case looks better than most of the ones you can buy
nice job ! i like your new pc
Nice work!
That's exactly my computer!
This is absolutely brilliant! I never would have thought of it, but wow! This takes recycling old laptops in a completely different direction. Aside of it just being cool as hell that you did this, it wouldn't take much to turn this into a lucrative niche. Either way, this blew my mind and thank you for sharing it! Go the distance though- put Arch on that bad boy! :)
Just kidding. Happy 2018. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words! I was originally thinking of putting on arch but decided to go with Ubuntu because I'm a little more familiar with using it as a desktop environment, and wanted something a little more stable that didn't require large regular upgrades. I also chose Ubuntu because of its abundance of packages in the repositories vs Arch where a lot of the stuff I wanted to install was in the AUR so it's a bit of a pain to build.
My pleasure. I'm just kidding with Arch. Best thing about Linux, to me, is basically do what you like and make it yours. Such a cool idea. A steampunk variant of that would probably sell for an ungodly sum of money, or just be cool to have. And it's recycled. So good! What's next for cool projects?
A steampunk variant would sure be neat to do, I'll have to keep that in mind :) I'm just starting a new day job so for the next month or so I won't have much time to work on projects but after that, I'll probably make some things to improve my office space. I actually have another video where I have all the footage recorded but haven't edited it yet, so I might get around to that in the next week if I have time.
The best thing I liked was the case it was so good
Love the video. Working on turning a old laptop into a desktop myself. Any tips?
Good idea . A nice start button would be appropriate.
what did you do with the drive?
And more RAM and SSD makes the machine faster.
But better what I have seen so far.
Air is an important factor to underestimate.
keep it up .
Thanks Keith, was a good watch and gave me some ideas for my custom PC case I will be building with wood. But, what about ventilation?
You're welcome Daniel :) Ventilation wasn't really a concern for me back when I did this project since the laptop motherboard it was built from was really low-spec and barely produced any heat, and the entire back of the case the open. However replace that front-bottom panel with a metal mesh and put a 12V 40mm fan behind it after I recorded the video just in case

great amazing 👌👍👍👍
it looks more cool if you put some LED strips in that transparent potion ...
Muito bom dá vontade de desmontar meu notebook pra fazer um tbm
If you were only reusing the laptop internals i find it better to just disable the lid mechanism and use it as a slick and thin desktop connecting it to a external monitor and disconnecting the dead internal screen. If the laptop is thick i would just remove the screen frame. It will look like a console like a ps2 or something like that when running with the lid closed.
you get better temps and clock speeds putting it into a large case. laptops basically always thermal throttle or power throttle.
jordan secrist Nah, that is only for shitty haswell and newer ulv chips. Prior ones (lets say sandybridge, ivrybridge) usually are really well made laptops...
Eduardo Avila I mean it does depend on the system. But you will get better performance with better temps. Plus his cooler looks almost as thin as a piece of cardboard. Lol
jordan secrist yes, certainly if the stock cooling solution couldnt keep it under 85-87°c under heavy load, it would help alot.
But it depends on what laptop and what manufacturer you have. Older dells, like my 1545 dont even pass 65°c, so there would be no point in getting it in a huge case (if the reason would only be getting better cooling).
There are some, as a asus that i've used, that by default run at 85°c, and that in full load throttles very hard, in that case, the benefit is right away very big.
Need help with finding where is power switch in pcb, I want to solder it too!
Can I just ask why you did not make a partition on your main pc? It does look nice tho.
Good Job !!!
A external gpu would be a good thing to have there
yeah not really.
jordan secrist It actually would be, as the processor itself is good, and its bottlenecked by the shitty intel igpu.
And as it is awready into a computer-ish big case, fitting a gpu wouldnt be so hard and wouldnt look awkward as with the original laptop case.
And.. why not? It would improve media playback, gameplays, etc.
I wish I could get one from my laptop, it's got Intel uhd 600 graphics which can't even handle Minecraft without optifine and all low settings.. but unfortunately Its too expensive for me
How do you power the fan?
I have an ASUS laptop which I would like to do something similar since when my electronics tend to get broken when I'm at Someone's place. I am willing to show You results I just have to get a working Linux distro on here maybe I can get a mint version...or something.

How’s the temp/cooling with the non-heat dispersing mdf?
No idea unfortunately, this was 3+ years ago so my setup long since changed
Good job if you need something help you fact build pc happy

is that rain meter?
Rainmeter only runs on Windows, that's called Conky which is essential the same thing but for Linux
awesome thanks I just started getting into other OSs I downloaded mint onto a C2D laptop that I have had down for a few years and mint runs on it like its a new PC.
Cardboards or Wood is not good for PCBs cooling system
is that manjar linux
it's Arch Linux with some customizations
I see Windows at 9:45
GASP...
,,, because is just a fucking lier full with shit
You can see it at 0:06 too
Putting *windows* on a Linux PC.
