I never found anything disturbing about Batman Beyond as a kid; I always thought the body horror was cool. Even today, all of that pales in comparison to the "Last Resort" episode where students were being sent to a reeducation camp using cult tactics to torture and brainwash them.

Yeah Return of the Joker was pretty terrifying. I think the main reason it hits so hard is that Robin isn't just some random character introduced in the movie, this is a character that we've grown to love and care about over the course of the whole New Batman Adventures series. Not only that but Tim's role in the show was really that of an audience surrogate; watching the show as a kid you couldn't really imagine yourself as Batman, but it was a lot easier to put yourself in Tim's shoes.

They were able to push the boundaries on Batman Beyond because it aired on the WB, so it less censorship and restrictions compared to Batman TAS was airing on Fox.
This is also why season four of Batman ( the “ red sky “ episodes) got darker in tone once it went over to the WB as well.
Episodes like “ critters”, “ legends of the dark knight” , over the edge “ never fear” and “ mad love “ never could have aired while the show was on Fox

YES I fucking love Batman Beyond! Unpopular opinion but as a whole, I like it a lot more than BTAS because of the darker themes, more energetic action, neo-Gotham atmosphere, side characters, old Bruce/young McGinnis dynamic, McGinnis' daily life as a student, etc. What's even more impressive to me is how they managed to pull all of it off without relying heavily on Batman's typical super well-written rogue gallery. As an adult I think it's aged a lot better too, even though BTAS has a lot more single episodes that are stronger that I still love.

  • @davidbjacobs3598

To be fair to Bruce making dark jokes, this Bruce Wayne is pretty thoroughly disillusioned. He spent decades in retirement, hiding from the world and not helping anybody. He still won't kill intentionally, but he's not the same guy we knew in TAS. But through his mentoring of Terry, he learns to care again.
Anyway, I'm surprised how much I've forgotten (but never that guy falling through the floor -- horrifying). Now I have to rewatch, so thanks!
(Also, note: Bruce is wrong. If the dude is truly intangible, he'll be completely frictionless, and thus fall straight through the Earth's core and pop up on the other side. He should reach EXACTLY the same distance from the core, so there's a good chance he'll reappear briefly unless he gets stuck in a mountain. At that point, gravity will finally have slowed him down enough that he'll turn around and go back. The only issue with this is that he seems to still have some ability to slow his descent when we last see him... That might prevent him from reaching the other side of the Earth. But theoretically, if Bruce could figure out how to cure him, they could do the math and go meet him... assuming he doesn't need air/food/water, of course.)

    • @macalloway1

Obviously gravity is acting on this guy or head just float so no he would not go throught to the other side. Hed probably bouce around thousands of miles underneath the esrths crust going from one direct to the other based on which direct gravity is acting on him the weakest until it balanced out and hed basically orbit underneaththe gorund forever . Gravity is radial basicallyexcept the force is exterted from thr outside not the inside. Thats why the earth is round. It pushes down based on the location and mass. Once he moves direction of the gravity pushing on him would change

    • @davidbjacobs3598
      @davidbjacobs3598 Před 9 měsíci +2

@@macalloway1 Exactly. And it keeps pulling him. As he accelerates toward the center of the Earth, he'd continue to speed up (no terminal velocity if he's truly intangible). He'd rocket through the center at X speed, at which point the direction of gravity reverse and begins to slow him down. Assuming no friction (because intangible), it would take just as long to fully decelerate as it did to accelerate, hence he'd reach the same distance from the center, potentially popping up on the other side depending on changes in elevation. Then, once his velocity hits zero, he'd start to fall again and the process repeats. It's kinda like he's the world's longest pendulum.

Heated objects emit infrared radiation (a different form of light), which also heats things, so he’ll be burned up, just slower than the direct approach. Coincidentally, the earth’s core is heated both by intense pressures and ancient supplies of RADIOACTIVE ORE, so that probably won’t help his survival odds… on the slightly brighter side, that gizmo worked (too well) by fiddling with the charges of his atoms, thus allowing them to be forced through the fields of other atoms, with minimal chance of bumping in to the actual solid parts. He may just decohere entirely before breaking a sweat, panicking one moment, saying hi to Etrigan’s family the next. It was probably going to happen anyways, what with this happening WITHOUT contact with the belt, but the heat may speed up the process, since heat is just atoms vibrating. I’d say his atomic structure is pretty shaken already, don’t you?

One of the things that did after i was going into my Teens, was the episode that was basically their take on Virtual Reality (I'm sure it has a name but i don't remember what it is). Max gets thrown into Virtual Reality and once she gets rescued by Terry/Batman, she says something about how much it hurts to be pulled back into reality, how she wants to stay in the place forever. Maybe I've just been thinking too much about Lost Soul since the last time I saw that death scene, but I'm pretty sure the "grandfather" was actually just a program designed to think it was Robert Vance, using his digitized memories as data to run off of. That could explain why "he" went to the replacing "his" grandson, the program malfunctioned and enacted this plan- as I recall, the Vance program was designed to be a tool he left behind for his descendants/future CEOs of his company to learn how to run his company. If the program was flawed or saw the grandson as a failure that couldn't follow "his" instruction, that might be why it jumped to trying to just upload itself into him.

Inque has been the Batman beyond villain I know the best of since 1999; her forcing himself down Terry’s mouth being the cause of that. Back in 1999 I couldn’t understand why she did that. It wasn’t until 2008, when turning 13 I finally watched Batman beyond again for the first time in yrs that I found out why she did that: Powers told her to kill Batman; I never remembered Powers giving that order back in 1999. So now that I knew, I was beginning to think that Inque was giving Terry the Majin Buu treatment but I eventually found Batman beyond wiki and it said that she was attempting to suffocate him. It was at that moment that everything became clear.

You know? There is an interesitng theory that rhe return of the joker movie, origianlly had Tim himsefl as the villain. Not just possesed by/with the joker in him but actually onhis own becoming a new joker out of hatred for Bruce and wanting revenge on him and Gotham. There is some evidence for it to. The Jokers actions in the movie are very odd as he goes out of his way to not ruin Tim's life and keep his family safe and his job to. Tim is able to detect/notice Terry when he's stealthed claiming it's old training when the show, constnatly shows Terry only getting noticed by people who are avticlvy looking for him or with tech.
And above all, how on earth did nobody including bruce or the tech companies Tim worked for, NOT notice the Joker implant? ANd why did the joker wait decades to take over? And most of all, his plan isn't even a joker plan. More an immitation of one as it has no jokebehind it. It's just 'get a giant space laser.' And sense when did the joker like advanced tech? he always preferred practical and down to earth stuff he could 'Jokerize.'
Even Terry comes up with the idea that it's Tim himself doing this.
So it's quite likley Tim was suppoused to be the main villain, but they had to change it at the last minute to be him possesed either out of cencorship or concern for hurting his character and his many fans.
But honeslty Tim willingly becoming the joker out of hatred for what he went through wouldbe FAR more disturbing and interesting.

This show came out when I was in my early twenties and (as a huge Batman fan) initially I wasn't bothered about watching it, until a mate of mine suggested we both give it a try and we rented a VHS of it. My scepticism of the idea of a teenage Batman was quickly put aside and I really got into it. I managed to find all the VHS versions of it that were released here in the UK (found a couple going cheap in a charity shop here in the UK, which was pretty cool) and I ended up loving the show so much I bought the US Region 1 DVDs of each season and the Return of the Joker Movie off eBay. I was genuinely surprised at some of the more horror-fied elements they got away with in it, considering that it's ostensibly a kids show. And here is the thing: there were plans for a second movie which was supposed to become the "proper" finale to Batman Beyond.
While it never got off the ground beyond a few treatments and ideas there were still a lot of pieces from it used later on for the famous Justice League episode "Epilogue", including *that* plot-revelation, even though in the canned movie it would've happened differently.
The plot of the movie would've basically centered around Terry becoming his own (Bat)man by facing a new brutal vigilante who appears in neo Gotham (who was refered to in some bits as "The Wraith"). This character was supposed to be another anti-Batman, and he would've basically gone around and started to end the lives of the few remaining Batman villains (I remember reading that the first scene of the second movie would've been Terry investigating the murder of Edward Nygma/The riddler), and Wraith would've actually beaten Terry up so badly in their first fight that he actually needs to get send to the hospital, which then would've lead into the revelation which was used in "Epilogue" later down the line.
Also, there were apparently plans to use this movie to explain how the Bat-family broke apart after the events shown in the RotJ happened, and how Batman ended up alone (there were rumors that they were going to show a scene were Batman gets kicked out of the Justice-League, but that was never confirmed and feels unlikely due to the rights issues of Wonder-Woman they had back then)

The episode is basically the scarecrow gives Bruce a modified fear toxin that takes away his fear, and he goes through the whole episode with no inhibitions, almost killing criminals while Tim tries to stop him. I don’t think the show was intended for kids. The creators wanted to tell compelling animated stories on par with the comics but the tv landscape at the time only allowed for action cartoons to be marketed towards children. It’s the same reason shows like Outlaw Star were edited to tv y7 even though it wasn’t a kid’s show. Today more adults watch animation so we can have tv14 and tvma animation that isn’t a comedy.

It is pretty crazy how much more people die in this show compared to the animated series 😂 & even Justice League. & I’m still confused if Terry is killing these people on purpose cause it’s never even addressed not even by Bruce less you count where everyone thought he killed Mad Stan cause of Spellbinder episode

The guy in Splicers was based visually on The Phantom Of The Paradise (before he turned into the tumor, of course). Source: the audio commentary.
And I think the guy in Lost Souls is based visually on God in Time Bandits. No source, but they look similar.

For me, it was mostly the intro that freaked me out when I was a kid. Not gonna lie, even to this day I still get low key anxiety when watching that title sequence. The visuals were quite an intense thing to see as a kid. However the theme itself was awesome.

    • @nancyf290

I actually felt the opposite. The reason I started watching the show was because the theme was awesome. So futuristic and fast paced, with hints of scary looking villains to come. And I hadn't heard music like that before.

The villain deaths in this show were something else lol. It's like Dini and Timm got together, asked "What's the worst shit we can do to villains that's not _technically_ killing them?" and said "Good, let's make it worse. Let's make it _so much_ worse."
Honorable mention to April Moon which... it's not as much of a nightmare as the rest, but you just know this won't end well.

The immortality of Mr Freeze was also something very scaru when you think of it's existential consecuences (loosing all your beloved people and being depressed because you can't have peace), while is also terrifying the bad luck of Victor Fries as he's betrayed.
Another horror thing can be the robotic girlfriend (at least, very cursed, but also is Dark the danger of that), the Terry's Friend mutated, the destiny of Talia Al Ghul (and the cursed Ra's Al Ghul being trans), the Superman's destiny of being possesed by a Starro during a decade or more years (it's horrendous that he lost a lot of important moment, even the possibility that he didn't say goodbye to a Dying Lois Lane)

In the dvd directors commentary for return of the joker, its discussed over a partially drawn scrapped storyboard that old Bruce was to revisit Arkham where they buried the original jokers body. The camera would pan up revealing someone had dug up the *JOKERS DEAD BODY* and hung it with a sign saying "I Know Your secret"

The Bane episode of Batman Beyond was an anti-drug PSA. The government used to give subsidies to TV shows that made educational and anti-drug episodes. If you ever watch a show from the 80's to 2000's and a character starts giving a lecture about how bad drugs are even when it didn't make much for the episode, that's because the show was getting tax breaks or funds from the government. Batman Beyond also had an anti-bullying PSA with the Willy Watt episode.
