Evil counterparts aren't an entirely new concept in superhero media. But for whatever reason, one just hasn't completely found its place in Batman's rogues gallery. Why is that?

Fun fact: Catman wasn't originally made to be a Batman doppelganger, only created one year after Batman and belonging to a completely different publisher. Catman originally was just a man raised by cats, and he was a hero who had his own comic line with a sidekick named kitten. This comic was actually extremely popular, but the publisher eventually went out of business and catman fell into the public domain. This is why you can find the character in multiple different IPs, from DC comics to Fairly Oddparents.

The Batman Who Laughs has such a cool design, but they ran him into the ground because of how popular he became, he's sorta treated like how Injustice Superman is treated by fans. In my opinion, Owlman is the perfect doppelganger for Batman. Not only sonce owl's are seen as predators to bats, but they both are based on animals that operate the best during the night and are often be used as symbols of fear and darkness.

@@Acacius1992 There are a LOT better versions of a "Superman but evil." The Injustice Superman is the vastly inferior version of Lord Superman from Justice League Animated.
The inspiration for the Injustice Superman is the Superman from, "What's So Funny about Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" which was later adapted into the animated movie "Superman vs the Elite." The story perfectly captures everything the modern "Superman but evil" fails to understand. Superman's behaviour is a choice so, when he behaves like a boy scout it's a conscious choice he's made, likewise, when the good guy turns bad it's a conscious choice as well of him choosing to embrace everything his powers can do. In the intro to the JLA episode where Lord Superman appears when he was just Superman his final words to Lex Luthor were, "I liked being a hero," and then he heat-visioned him to save the world from being nuked. That's a lot more chilling than Injustice Superman who did a murder in a state of grief.
While Homelander does seem like the typical "Superman but evil" it's a subversion of expectations since he's "Trump but superpowers" and that's fucking scary.

I always considered Anarky to be the anti-Batman but less from personality and more based off their conditions. Anarky was born into a dysfunctional family with violence and crime being fairly commonplace. Batman’s solutions to crime (I’m generalizing here, I know this is different with every story) is more or less a band aid solution. He finds people doing crimes, then he stops them and locks them up. Anarky kind of realizes how pointless this is and seeks to combat the causes of crime (poverty, desperation, power, etc). Now, he’s incredibly radical in his approach and can sometimes miss the point but his existence kind of serves as a counter to Batman’s entire existence, he’s challenging Batman’s logic in a way that few other vilains can. Anyways, that’s my long winded explanation of how I few the sociology of a comic book world, hope you enjoyed.

The problem with these bizzaro Batman types is that Batman himself already looks like a villain so it’s hard to make an evil doppelgänger of him. Another reason they never caught on is Batman already has WAY WAY too many “rival” type characters as is. Killer Moth actually really works at what he is - the comedic relief underdog - the loveable loser we all root for. I don't get why so many people online insist on making him a serious threat as if Batman Mythos really needed him to be one. Moth has found his niche within the rogues gallery and he works pretty well within that niche.
Also - I don't think it's the design why Anti-Batmen don't really stick - it's their personality. Their Anti-ness is so superficial that it is actually really boring. I mean, it is just as you said, so many of Batman's villains already clearly reflect his personality that a pure "Evil version" isn't needed. And what is the purpose of an Anti-Batman anyway? To have a Villain that is a true equal? Both in physical ability, access to resources, and tactical ability? Well in that case we already have an Anti-Batman who managed to stick around as a serious threat. It's Bane. Bane is everything you would get out of an Anti-Batman with the sole exception that his silhouette isn't a straight-up recoloring of Batman's.
Aslo also, dude - the entire loud equals funny joke really hurts your video, man.

The one thing that bothers me about the wrath is that the killer is connected to one of the established characters. One of the most important characters. The cop that did it has to be a Joe Chill. A do nothing nobody who’s only act of note was making Batman/Wrath. But his character being someone who hates the police because one of them got away with murder essentially scot free is amazing. And very deliberately uncomfortably realistic. Any person in the wrong place at the wrong time can get shot and Justice is hard to get.

I think there is also an at least decent anti Batman in “Batman: Detective”. Essentially a criminal that Batman didn’t let die, killed the family of a merc woman who actually trained with Batman before he was Batman, and she decides to wear a full white bat suit and attempts to kill everyone Batman has saved (more street level saving with records rather than universe scale). It kinda ends up being a less valid version of the red hood concept but still has some interesting tidbits.
Hell you could consider red hood an evil Batman (he even has done it directly at times) but it’s not much of an exact and he’s usually a good guy nowadays.

  • @SilverHairedFreak25

I still think The Batman's version of Wrath is the best "Evil Batman" we have that's not a _literal_ evil Batman like Owlman or The Batman Who Talks. He's a great amalgamation of the other anti-Batmen you mentioned. He's got the backstory and look of the original, but the color scheme of Catman helps him stand out against the Dark Knight while not looking completely garish like his comics counterpart. Not to mention Scorn's monochromatic color scheme is a great contrast to the bright and colorful Robin as well, so kudos there. And he's got the inverted morality and M.O. of Killer Moth as a protector of criminals, which really digs into the motivation of Batman and warps it. Wrath's parents were arrested/killed like Bruce's, so he dedicates his life to protecting others against those who wronged him in the past. The catch is, he's protecting evil people from those who wish to seek justice. It's much more interesting than him just being a glorified serial killer with a hate boner for cops.

The Batman Who Laughs is a perfect example of a great idea DC had, run into the ground due to DC having zero sense of self-control. Like the concept and execution of The Batman Who Laughs first appearance is great. Granted his final battle in The Metal series wasn't great but I would argue that the metal series as a whole didn't land great. Still DC knew they had a home run with this character, so if they used him sparingly he could become Batman's Darkside; but instead they milked the character concept to death and overused it to the point where comic fans rolled their eyes and visibly grew annoyed when they saw the character.

The problem I'm getting from this is that most of their motivations are just stupid: Killer Moth was basically trying to be a mercenary with a "Batman but for criminals" gimmick, Catman was just board (my mom owns his debut issue and he actually considers becoming a crime fighter before deciding that since Catwoman was reformed at the time he should just fill the void she left), the Wrath's parents were killed by Gordon (ostensibly in self defense) so now he wants to kill all cops, Prometheus was basically raised by his parents to hate justice. With this in mind, I think that the version of Wrath from The Batman had the best motivation: his parents were criminals who committed crime to support him and his little brother, so as Wrath and Scorn they run interference on Batman and the police because they see super villains like Joker and Penguin as folks trying to make ends meet.

It's funny, Batman doesn't really have a singular popular anti-Batman, but they've tried to work the concept multiple times. Like, there's probably as many evil Batmen as there are Spider-Man clones. I'd love to see a sequel vid. Outside of the ones briefly mentioned but not discussed in the video, a couple more come to mind.
Flashpoint Batman isn't a villain, but being Thomas Wayne, he is a Batman who lost son, instead of his parents, and is a Batman willing to kill. IIRC, he even tries to stop Bruce from being Batman at one point to "save" his son? Azrael is a pretty ruthless character who was meant to replace Batman, and I love his depiction in the Arkham games. Jason Todd tries to replace Bruce a couple times, he wears a sick batman outfit after Batman "dies" to Darkside in the main continuity and poses as Batman in Injustice 2. There's also Zur-En-Arrh or whatever he's called. A weird alien/alter ego batman. I haven't read it yet, but I believe Batman Down Below involves a creepy Cthulhu inspired Batman, one who's the embodiment of everything Gotham fears Batman is. Sort of a "Mario the man vs. Mario the idea" scenario.

The man who defeated Batman by planning for his downfall and then destroying him in single combat. The man who reigned in Gotham, who murdered Alfred, who has the absolute coolest design. When I was reading the Secret Six, I was struck by the realization that Catman is like the reverse of the male-gaze superheroine. He's very consistently depicted with little or no clothes so his peak physique is prominently on display, and in one of his first scenes he's cooking breakfast for the team. Further than that there are two separate characters that see Catman as "the ideal male partner," Cheshire for her own child, and Vandal Savage for his potential grandson/heir. It was just another really cool way Gail Simone plays with gender roles in superhero comics.
And also goddamn Deadshot physically can't not flirt with other guys on any team he's on, the homoerotic tension between him and Thomas Blake was insane.

Ghostmaker is a new amazing character that rivals Batman and has some anti-Batman elements!!! I say this because as a child Ghostmaker saw his parents get threaten, beaten up, and embarrassed by a wealthy family, that forced them to sell out there business. Despite that traumatic experience, he didn't fight crime because of that. He sees crime fighting as a art form and skill he wants to be the best at.
If anything Ghostmaker's existence asks the question "what if a hero existed but didn't fight for moral reason?". Which is a interesting idea!!! Especially since Ghostmaker is one of the few characters that is a psychopath BUT isn't a villain and choses to do good, despite his lack of empathy!!! Although to be fair, he does kill criminals because he sees things from a logical not emotional or moral perspective.

Basically anti hero version of Azrael and David Cain/Orphan

    • @_Nonnez_
      @_Nonnez_ Před 8 měsíci +1

@@dc7981 I agree with the Azeral comparison and David Cain to a degree. I say to a degree because although both Ghostmaker and David Cain tried to make the "perfect soldier" with kids. Ghostmaker never domestically physically abused his side kick Phantom 1 and wasn't cruel with training.
However Ghostmaker did fail Phantom 1 because he adopted him and was emotionally distance and neglectful as a foster father. He gave him a mansion to live in but never built an actual bound with him because he only was him as a test to make a "better Robin" then Batman. Which obviously is a terrible mentality to have BUT thankfully future Ghostmaker learns to be more considerate and nice to people that he trains (like Clownhunter). Since he realizes being cold hearted isn't going to help teamwork.
Unfortunately in the past Phantom 1 "dies" because they were after a villain, Phantom 1 goes off the plan and rushes in to get said villain. Then an explosion happens and he gets stuck under rubble and couldn't get out. So Ghostmaker leaves him to die in order save other people in danger infront of him. Sadly for Phantom 1 he never knew that, so he believes Ghostmaker abandoned him for no reason. Since this is a comic book and no one really stays dead, Phantom 1 makes it out alive and plans to get his revenge.
Interestingly enough, when Ghostmaker finally gets to the villain he's more brutal with his killing, which means he was angry that Phantom 1 died. So in away he kinda does care??? But doesn't feel it or express it in a way we do!!! Also despite Ghostmaker's lack of empathy and morals, he's strongly against sexuality harming children. Since when he fought Slade he insulted him by mentioning how he only goes after children!!!
Anyway I agree that Ghostmaker has some similarities with both characters BUT his personality is much more different then those characters!!! He's not always serious and can be a playful, sassy, witty, and charismatic asshole!!!
Btw I don't know much about Azeral to make an analysis on why there similar or what's there differences. However I hope you enjoyed this long response!!!

Doc Ock is what Spiderman could've been if he let his resentment stew for years. Green Goblin is what Peter could be if he let his obsession with scholastic excellency over take everything he holds dear, just to prove he wasn't a loser. Two-Face is Batman's zealousness for justice taken to its extreme.
These so called doppelgangers are played mostly for aesthetics. You see their costume on the cover, with a spalsh page that says "The coming of Nega-Batman!" And you think "woah! Its like our hero was turned evil! Aint that something!"
