    "My drawings tend to not look good until the last ten minutes." LOL ... very important point!!

      That's why I always say patience is the most important skill to learn for making art. When people say things like "I could never do anything like that", I always ask how long they have spent on a single drawing or piece of art. The response is usually between 5 minutes and 30 minutes, sometimes an hour. When I tell people that anything Ive done that I'm proud of has taken no less than 8-10 hours, and the hyper realistic drawings up to 300 hours. Anybody can make art, its just a matter of desire and patience.

      @rolandserafini You're so right. The last really good piece of art I drew took me 10 hours over 2 days. When my teacher said; "That is a good drawing." I knew it was because he didn't compliment easily.
      Another drawing I did took half a day, and complete concentration.

    This was very helpful. One thing I needed to learn and I am grateful I did, and that is that it's ok if the art doesn't look good right away, or even in the first 80%. I have been rushing the results by trying to burnish too soon to get the end result way before it was layered enough for that.

      @@zinta1 something that might help you is looking into color theory. Basically with colored pencils it’s easy to layer colors on top of each other that might just give you a muddy result. If you’re working with paint it’s easier to tell which mix of colors makes mud! Don’t give up:)

    To each their own. I used to color this way until I started tattooing over 20 years ago. In tattooing we don't have the luxury of layering or else we will chew up the skin. I quickly learned that I was previously just simply afraid of commitment. And now I can't unsee it. Whenever I see someone layering colors like this, I see a fear of commitment. Once you realize this fact and start pounding the color in fast and hard you will be amazed at how much richer and how much quicker your artwork becomes. Blending is not only achieved by layering it is achieved by hand pressure.
    Just my 2 cents.

    • @lashondamiller2982
      @lashondamiller2982 Před rokem +2

    Hello Gemma. I hope that you are one of those that actually read comments as I have a question. I noticed in this vid that you use brown and not black on the green to create depth. Could you explain the reason for not using black? Thankyou, Derek.

    • @GemmaChambersArt
      @GemmaChambersArt  Před rokem

      I certainly try to read and answer as many as I can! I do like to use browns and greys for shadows where possible, I find it's a much softer and true-to-life way to add darker areas. True black isn't all that common in nature and it for me it can look quite harsh if used in a realistic drawing. I go into more detail on this in my recent black cat drawing video where even black fur is mostly made up of dark greys and deep blues, with black only being found in the very darkest areas.
