I AM 71 YEARS OLD AND MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY 4 yrs and 5 mos. AGO. WE NEARLY MADE IT TO OUR 49 th. ANNIVERSARY. I HAVE BEEN JUST TOTALLY DISINTERESTED IN ANYTHING. SO FINALLY I DECIDED TO TRY MY HAND AT DRAWING & PAINTING AGAIN, I WAS ALWAYS FAIRLY GOOD IN ART. HOWEVER A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, PRODUCTS SUCH AS PAPER/PENCILS, ETC.. I DID LEARN SOME THINGS WHILE I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO TODAY, BECAUSE TRYING TO USE COLORED PENCILS HAS ABOUT STRESSED ME OUT TRYING TO GET THEM TO BLEND. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. GOD BLESS YOU. 😄 SHIRLEY FROM TEXAS, USA.🗽🌊🌹🌸 HELLO FROM MY 2 CATS ALSO😹🐾😻🐾🐾🌸

I've watched a few "blending" videos out of curiosity as I'm new to colored pencils, but have 70 years of experience with art. I was doing my second mandala the other day and found myself doing the burnishing technique because that is how I learned to blend paint. I really liked the results and thought, "But, that's not how the videos told me to do it." Thanks. This is very helpful.

Hot pressed watercolor paper, 100% cotton, and Strathmore 500 series Bristol Vellum are both excellent surfaces for colored pencil. A,so, Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper, on the smoother of the two sides is great for pencil.

Fabriano Artistico Hotpressed watercolour (Extra White) : Best for Polychromos and Legion Stonehenge Hotpressed watercolour paper: As a second choice, (if you can't get the Fabriano Artistico) These 2 papers are the BEST! Next, for people who like more vivid colours, doing some comics maybe? Then the Arches Hotpress Aquarelle is another grea quality paper. I'd risk to add the Winsor & Newton and why not the Hahnemuhle paper, but I haven't personaly tried these, both great quality though!

I studied art in college (Illustration and Graphic Design) but the instructors were so brutal that I’ve hardly drawn in 40 years. Very sad, as I was always sketching before. Anyways, I’m retiring soon (I ended up working in finance) and have decided to finally start again. I was always great with graphite or pen and ink but not colour. So I’ve bought some colouring books to practice - particularly flesh tones as I love portraiture. Once I feel I’m ready, I’ll begin filling the sketchbooks I’ve bought. I decided to buy oil-based pencil crayons because I’ve never used them (and I liked the thought of the challenge) and because I read that once you’ve the hang of them, they’re better. Thanks very much for illustrating the difference as most of the videos I’ve watched only cover wax-based pencils, so they’re useless to me. So far, I think the oil suits my style as I’ve always liked to layer with a softer texture - so we’ll see how things progress! Again, thanks very much. Excellent video.

  • @patriciamoore7414

First off, this is probably one of the best tutorials on blending that I have seen.
I tend to blend with all methods, though I will sometimes use my lightest color in the blend in place of the white. It really depends on what I am coloring. Another thing that I do, when blending with white/lightest color, is to color a light layer over the area to brighten up the color. I learned that from another CZcamsr.
I thank you for this tutorial & look forward to more!

  • @ThePinkBinks
    @ThePinkBinks Před 3 lety +3

I'll tell you what's been done: you dissolved the wax with the mineral spirits and the pigment fell to the bottom. Your second layer of pencil is skating across a layer of clear wax that has flattened itself.
The wax only dissolved and melted a bit with the solvent but it didn't actually get rid of the wax. Your second layer is "painted" over that clear wax layer.
Using that transparent layer to your advantage means you can really make your colours pop; especially if you varnish with a top clear layer (varnish, resin, glass, whatever).
Any unevaporated spirit left on the first layer will pull more colour off your pencil too.
Having said this, I see why it works but I haven't used this method yet so thank you for the video. I look forward to trying a colour pop effect with it. 😁

I am 52 and i guess a very late comer to the world of adult colouring /drawing etc. I was lucky enough to get a swet of polychromos a couple of years ago , I have only used them on and off doing * gems* as i am too frightened of using them in a adult colouring book for fear of * making a mistake* and ruining the book. After watching how you blend the poly i now know how to do it better than what i was doing it before. I guess because my gems were small i was just using a blender pencil and that worked wonders but i am now going to try and just do it using the layering. Thank you for your tutorial, I have the 3 different colour pencils, Prismacolour, Polychromos and Carandache, and I appreciate your demonstration of blending, I love doing portraits , and I find so challenged to do all the different methods, but as you said we need to practice and find for ourself, but your video was a wonderful help 😊 ❤

Hi Claire 💖 I am lucky enough to have been in this community for many years, watching your videos. I have learned so much from you and others but your blending method is my favorite, using mineral spirits or o.m.s. It’s just so much easier on my hands and it’s quicker. Whenever your older blending videos pop up I have to watch them because it’s kind of like magic to watch! So thank you very much for not only your blending tutorials but all of your stunning tutorials! I am sorry for rambling, I am so tired! 💖

Outstanding lesson, tips and examples!! I was using my Soho pencils, a hard wax version from Austria. I avoided using them for years until I learned about different surfaces, pressures and techniques. Same with watercolor pencils, and inktense, each has a learning curve, and using them together amps up the results. Brilliant explanation and demonstration. I use opt with a blending stump and a bit of sandpaper or a nail file smooth grit to clean it for blending a new area. I really like the blender pencils as well. My current paper fave is Borden & Riley #234 paper for pens, as I use more pens for zentamgle tiles, and the smoother surface is easier on fine nibs and felt nib brush pens. And, layering on virtually 'toothless' paper limits my pencil coloring results enough that I had to quit being frustrated. Using more traditional 140# cold press tiles ruined nibs so fast even as the pencils results improved. I compromise with 140# hot press paper and even the inktense half pan palettes results are brighter. So much to learn, and your reminder to look for a la carte pieces and experiment to feel and find what is most pleasing is spot on. I'm so thrilled i found your channel.

Hi. I have just watched this video and found it very useful. I have recently got into colouring and my efforts looked like a 4 year old. I have have a few mental health issues and recently discovered that colouring in is a great way to relax and find peace. I have watched a few videos and still found myself lost. This video was very informative a d has given me hope. I am still, confused with the wax pencils and oil ones but I suppose that will come. Tha is for explaining in easy to following steps as my illness struggles at time. I am on a very strict budget and your advice is very helpful. Thanks for helping me in finding out how to colour in with dignity.

Very good explanation about blending and now I know even more about using polygromos pencils. I myself use candle wax from a special candle, the wax of which you can also use as a hand cream.

I learned so much from you. I am 76 years old, and in August 22,2022, I fell in my home. I had a brain bleed and had surgery. I am recovering. My physical therapist suggests coloring in adult coloring books. It has been very exciting and helpful in my using my hands. I am so happy I watched your lesson. I am going to try the Oil Based pencils. I have the wax Prismacolor premier and do not like them. I want my coloring to have somewhat of a professional look. Again thank you

I am rather heavy-handed when I use colored pencils. I like to use Odorless Mineral Spirits and a Q-tip. But, I recently started using unscented paraffin oil. I got a small 4 oz bottle from Amazon. It is absolutely my favorite blending medium ever.

Thank you so much for showing us the difference between oil-based and wax-based colored pencils and the difference in how to use them. I especially appreciated your showing us that your strokes in the oil-based pencils were actually very small ovals and not just back and forth as they appeared on the video. I don't know of any budget pencils that sell open stock. Prismacolor Premieres are still working out their problems and are a bit higher than some of us can afford, but they may have to come down a bit if any of the budget pencil companies who are working hard on quality control decide to go open stock themselves. I have been watching Prisma and their changes in ownership for a good many years and still hope to be able to get some in the future.

This has been a great help!
I'm a beginner and have been using Marco Raffine along with a Prismacolor colourless blender. Even when I spend ages layering, I still don't feel that the colours are vibrant enough. The blender works but doesn't get rid of the tooth, leaving a grainy texture...now I know why!
I've just joined your FB group, today and mentioned that I'm hanging out for a set of Prismacolor...(waiting for a price drop 🤞🏻) I can see more than ever now, that they are going to suit me better.
    Loving your channel...learning loads.
    Thank you.

I am a beginner colourist and found your blending techniques very useful. You have also made me want to try the faber castelles that we can also get as open stock form our local hobbycraft store as I have found out today. But seeing the way you built up the layers has made me very much want to try them out and hopefully they will be the pencils I want to use as I learn to draw and design my own designs. Thank you Claire so far I am loving everything that you show us.
