  • Hey Good People,
    I had a 2004 Ford Explorer in the shop this week. In this video you will follow along with me as I go through my diagnostic process. In the end you'll find out something disturbing. Spoiler Alert, there's a big name franchise shop involved.... smh

    My son has a 1994 tbird with the 4.6 and is a bear to get the oil filter changed. So we changed it from a 820s filter to a 10575 which is on the 5.0 coyote. Same size o-ring. Works just fine.

    That is messed up. Yep I'm sure it was difficult to change that filter, but you changed it. That means that it wasn't impossible. Ridiculous, Midas should be responsible for that engine, if he has the receipts and with your diagnosis, they should pay for the engine, they are insured for it, so file the claim.

    Another thing: On these 4.6/5.4 engines, the oil filter is mounted to an aluminum adapter that is bolted to the side of the block. There is a plastic gasket (with silicone O-rings embedded) that seals both the oil and coolant as the lower radiator hose is also fitted to this adapter. Often, the silicone flattens out over time and will start leaking oil under pressure. This might be the source of the leak as it would be located in that same area.

      I was thinking the same thing I’ve changed many of those gaskets. On this one the major leak was the oil filter but I do believe that gasket is seeping.

      Ive seen that gasket leak as well as the gasket he described. But I’ve seen the filter leak too especially if it hasn’t been changed in an excessively long time. I’ve seen the gasket get hard and leak. And I’ve seen it harden shrink to the point that the filter actually loosens and leaks really fast. The people really shouldn’t have given him The impression that they were changing the filter. I think I respected the first oil change place more. They at least let him know.

      @@AlexTheCarDoctor It can be deceptive, too ... when the gasket started leaking on my '05 CVPI, I for sure thought I had a rear main seal failure as that is where the oil was dripping off the engine - at the back of the pan. It was that gasket - the oil was travelling along the top of the oil pan rail until it got to that low point and came off.

    I have an 05 explorer with the 4.6 2v. It’s sad that this one is in such shape mechanically. Like you said, my only major issue in 11 years of ownership (61,000mi-220000mi+) has been the transmission. I love that car. Same color as this one too lol

    Many/most people don't lift their hoods on their vehicles. No checking fluids between oil changes. I doubt many know where the dipstick is located. 🤔

    Crazy how much this happens to people i just had a friend come to me with a over filled cummins i had to drain like a quart of oil and they charged them an arm and a leg for the service. Now im trying to find if a seal blew somewhere also cuz its pissing oil underneath... Great vid you guys as always much appreciate the time you guys take to show us how its done!

    I have a 02 explorer. Burns oil leaks some oil to. I just top it off and check it frequently. It has just bout 329,000 miles so not worth fixing leaks. Lol. 4.6 2v.

    In my shop, we got a 2004 Explorer with the same engine in (look up "The Autistic Mechanic", "Customer states makes a knocking sound") ... the engine had experienced a RUD event (rapid unscheduled disassembly) on cylinder 8 - rod deleted itself but the engine still ran but with a nasty imbalance as well as a sharp knock. I replaced the engine with a junkyard engine (customer didn't want to pay for a new engine). 10 months later, the Explorer came back with a rod knock again. This time, the customer admitted they had changed the oil but forgot to put the oil filter back on ... just finished up with it 2 weeks ago with its 3rd engine (second JY engine).

    I had a 2002 ford explorer V6 with 155k miles. When I bought it was very bad shape… I rebuilt the motor and did transmission fluid and suspenion. Thing lasted me for very long time traveled NY to FL. Timing was bad had put 20w 50 for a whole year still ran beautiful.

    that is a clean exploder Alex, I feel so bad for the guy, oil nice and clean but they trusted the wrong guy, no way you or I would do that, but a good used engine looks like the cure, hope you can find one at a good price, I have noticed lately the salvage yards are not giving anything away around here

    Those are great engines. Much better than the 4.0L, These things are famous for timing and valve issues. Good show sir!

    I understand this car had front end damage making changing the filter difficult but it's highly recommend to do your own oil changes save money and you know for sure it's done....

    Yeah bro. Same here. The trusted guys I get my used tires from here locally was doing my alignment and didn’t tell me my rear control arms and bushings was busted and that’s why it couldn’t align correctly but was telling me he aligned all four when he only did the two fronts. 🤘🏽

    I've had similar issues with those oil change places like JL and Val Ins Oil change to the point where I change my own oil.

      Same here man. I have a 2003 expedition and an oil change costed me $120 so I do my own and after materials it’s $35 each change. Never will i go to an oil change shop

    Alex! Happy new year! So these engines,...coyote style engines (later model DOHC)have the similar head/cam journal design. So if you have one of these, and find the aluminum journal is scarred,but the cam is still good, I'll just swap the head with a used one.Nope! Those things are a match set, the caps and clearances are not interchangeable, as far as used ones go. A new head, im not sure. But good video, good job!

    I've owned an Exploder with the 4.6L V8 and let me tell you this tank has been reliable as FUK!! 250,000 miles on her and the only actual "repairs" to the engine have been a new gasket for the oil filter housing ($10) and a new intake manifold gasket ($30). That's it. After 20 years and a quarter million miles this truck is still running on factory alternator, power steering pump, fuel pump, etc. The first owner did replace the A/C pump and condenser. I replaced the radiator and thermostat at 200,000 miles. No transmission issues either, I've changed the ATF and filter every 50k miles. Rear diff every 50k too. This 4.6L motor is absolutely bulletproof she is a workhorse beyond belief. The rest of my Explorer is not as pretty as the blue one you had in your shop, but then again my baby has had a rough life. Still runs great though! When I change the oil every 5,000 miles I might let the oil filter go one time, but always change it at the next oil change. Write it down so I don't forget. The main thing with these motors like you said they need clean fresh oil to run well (as most modern engines do). My truck is two wheel drive so no BS about the front diff either. It's been a great car. And I bought her used for just $5,000 ten years ago how about those apples.

    Worked for a Ford Dealer in the 90's Ya called em right, "Exploders"haha I liked the 4.6s they usually were hard to blow up. Same as those 1.9s they ran in the Escorts. Those little 1.9s were tough boogers for sure!, Had a couple over the years come in with less than 1 quart of oil, and weren't clackin' or makin' noise....Those 4.0's Ford came out with in Explorers, etc even the factory trained techs wanted nothing to do with em, for their timing chain issues.
    My buddies wife owns a 2005 Calif Edition Mustang, well her 4.0 took a dump. I am no longer living in the US with them, so they don't have their Personal Mechanic onsite now hahaha......Months after I moved to Asia, to retire and live (after 40+ years as a mechanic), their 4 of 6 cars turned to crap fast!

    Yikes 😮 shame on the oil change place who faked oil filter changes 😢
    As a DIYer, I use a sharpie and mark the date and odometer on the filter.
    4.6L in my weird wheelchair van called the MV1 (2011-2016)... I use motorcraft FL820A oil filter & thankfully easily accessible
    Half Ford, half GM, Volvo wiper motor, and other wacky Frankenstein parts

    If you have an oil leak, it's important to do a daily dipstick check and fill up. That way you keep an eye on it and know the rate of loss. This customer had a simple fix. Hard expensive fixes are rear main seals and to a lesser extent front engine seals. The engineers put a minimum level on the dipstick as a warning: Past this point and expect some engine damage.

    This is why you should observe all fluid change services, i even specify an extra large oil filter which is 3 to 4cm longer and i pay the extra 25% because i do not trust the short oil filters to filter that well. An i check my oil every 2 week because i know i burn fair bit of the oil in my 98 montero sport

    i have a 4.0l ford explorer with 286k its still kicking to my shock i do my own work on it and its needing front end suspension work now and has this wonderful timing chain noise at the back of the engine that I ignore just like the rear main seal leak because i am looking for a 4.6l drive train to shove in it because i like my mostly rust free 02 explorer.

    4.6 manifolds would warp! Manifold bolts would rot off flush with the head. Other then that good!!!

    I had to replace the oil filter flange gasket on my friend Crown Vic. The last guy stripped two of the bolts trying to tighten them.

    I change my oil/filter every 10k, and halfway between that 10k I change the filter only - and top it off. That seems to work for me. My co-worker started this schedule, but before he began he took the oil in for analysis - after the full change and also after the filter-only change. The analysis showed that the oil was the same after the full oil change/with filter ….and after the filter only change. Interesting..

    I had a Ford explorer 1998. It had a single overhead cam. 5.0 liter. I think that was the best engine ford made for the Ford explorer

    Your right they are exploders! 4.6l engine is usually darn good though one of the few Ford engines made that are any good. 5.0 was good too, but the 300 6 was the best engine they ever designed. Those are my Tank engines. Ya'll need to relocate to Texas we need more mechanics that care about their customers.

    Sounds like a hydraulic lifter isn’t pumping up.. I would try some mystery oil as a last ditch effort to save it..

    Alex what do you think about the 1998-2003 dodge Durango with 5.9 engine? Are they more reliable than the ones with the 4.7 engine?

      The 5.9 is a overhead valve engine versus the 4.7 overhead cam engine The overhead cam engine is more simple more simple means more reliable.

    Mine next she started tickin on start up but go away turn signal and brake lights don’t work nd got a lil oil leak a 4.0 with 225k miles but I work 4 days a week and can’t find time 😭😭

    20 years isnt bad ive had ford cars with the 5.0l pushrod back in the 80s. With corkscrew gaskets that would leak when only 3 years old and only 30k miles or less

    the customer have some blame too he’s supposed to pop and check his oil least once a month. He could have caught this problem before it damaged the engine.

    The 4.6 2v is bullet proof. Its the same engine they put in the crown victoria. As for as the noise it sounds like a bad power steering pump.

    I had a 04 explorer. I purchased it with 30,000 miles on the odometer. That truck was the biggest pos I ever owned. The rear diff leaked fluid constantly, It was a design flaw Ford refused to fix. Also, the thermostat housing was plastic, It also leaked constantly. The issues weren't from a lack of maintenance. I always had any and all recommended maintenance performed. At 100,000 miles, the rear diff failed. I cut my losses and purchased a Toyota. I'll never buy American vehicles again. They're garbage!

    It seems like the common denominator for most engine problems are these quick lube places.Unfortunately for most of us we either don’t have the room to change our own oil or don’t have the knowledge. Unless you live near Alex the car doctor you aren’t going to find a more honest mechanic than him. Ask family and friends if they know any mechanic that is honest or do your research, but avoid the quick change places if you can or take a picture of your filter and check the oil once it is changed.

      If you're in a HOA neighborhood, I was warned not to work on my vehicles in my own driveway 😮
      Eff them, we all do our oil changes, suspension replacements, brake jobs etc anyway as long as it's done by the end of day😅​@@JBBRAD9267

    I would have used old oil and a filter gasket from the bin to test It, i usually do like that, then do the proper oil change if the engine doesnt knock, no Need to waste new oil and filters on a dead motor, i keep Always a jug of old oil from my car since i change it Always soon, very useful to top off beaters people doesnt want serviced, cars wich leak or drink alot of oil and customer doesnt agree to fix and those tests, still this engine doesnt sound so bad hearing from the video, probably Is simply tappet noise, i would try a flush if isnt lower end noise

      That’s a good idea for the DIY people. At my shop all my oil goes into one container and it’s contaminated. how cool all the way from Italy one of my places to go on my bucket list

    Too many shady mechanics and shops out there, present company excluded of course. I'm a used car dealer. I once sold a Dodge Durango, SUV, to a very young man from Guatemala. He couldn't speak any English whatsoever. Not an issue, I can speak Spanish. A few months later he calls me, and asks me to translate, and passed the phone to a lady. She tells me that the oil pan is stripped and needs to be replaced, it would cost 2 grand because it would be labor intensive. The SUV was 4X4 and there wasn't enough clearance to replace the pan with the engine in the SUV, the engine would have to be removed. This was news to me because I always change the oil prior to each sale, and I torque the drain plugs to spec, I think it was like 25 ft-lbs. So when he got back on the phone, I told him to bring it to me. He did, and it took me all of 5 minutes to change the oil. I didn't even have to raise the Durango, there was enough clearance that I got on my back and changed it right there, and I was able to thread in the plug effortlessly with my fingers and then use the torque wrench. There was nothing stripped.

      Not really, mileage was not that high. A lot of 20 year old vehicles running better than this new stuff they got out here on the roads.

      @@AlexTheCarDoctorExactly! My mother’s car is a 2001 grand Marquis with 245,000 miles. The engine still runs VERY well. But it does have an oil leak at the filter housing where you described it. Until I get a chance to fix it, I add oil periodically. About a quart every 1,000 miles or so. But the 4.6 is known to routinely get 250,000 -300,000 miles or more if even halfway maintained. I’ve owned 3 cars with this engine. All with at least 200,000 miles and the engine running well.

    Driving it to the shop is not a bad idea if you can’t afford a tow truck

      Yeah but if that engine lock up, he’d be needing a tow truck and then some for sure.

    I went to jiffy lube against my best judgement and they didn't change the filter. No wonder it took 10 minutes.

    I have to shame the customer and the Midas shop. The customer knew that the car has no oil in it He should have had it towed to the shop instead of driving it there. I would go back to Midas and file a claim. If the vehicle was involved an accident, I would consider calling the insurance. who took care of the repairs and bodyshop as well.

    I used to have an 05 that looked just like this with the 4.6, it's a shame to see one die because it was so good to me. My oil fill neck broke off and was leaking oil all down the passenger side of the engine, fortunately it was caught before it caused any damage. Back before I knew how to work on my own stuff, the guy at jiffy lube pointed out how the oil was so low it wasn't even on the stick, and even then I knew how bad that was lol

    Can you get a lawyer with proof of poor maintenance for at least half the cost, but he did drive it without oil

      In this case : Fix after 20 years. Or in the case of a lot of 4.6 engines, fix or repair after 200,000 miles or more. Not too shabby.

      Chevy: cheap heavy equipment very useless
      Dodge: drops oil daily, garbage engine

    4.6 one of only 3-4 reliable engines from ford almost any other ford i will point people far away from you will get more reliability from kia or mazda or jaguar with lucas electronics
