I had a 1999 Dodge Durango in the shop over the past few weeks. It had north of 300,000 miles. It was running and driving, but consuming oil. I recommended an engine replacement thinking there was no way he was gonna replace it, let alone with a remanufactured engine. I thought he would just get a new car lol - Zábava

I had a 2002 Durango with the 4.7 V8 I have to say was the best vehicle I ever owned. I had it for almost 14 years did regularly maintenance brakes and tires . If it wasn’t for getting in a wreck I probably still be driving that Dodge. 187000 miles .

If the rest of the rig is in good shape (no rust) and interior looks good it might be worth it. New truck costs are insane.

Those magnum v8 intake plenums go bad and suck in oil at times. $8000 going into a vehicle you know inside out is great especially in todays market. The lady has a point.
True, just replace the old 2 piece intake with an aftermarket 1 piece and might be better off
The price into keeping a older model vehicle running is sooo much cheaper then buying something brand new. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but how long modern vehicles last, I don't think paying the price tag is worth it.

@@Rb-te3ou I have a 2014 Ram 3.6L and I'm waiting on a replacement motor for it. Looked into replacing the truck with another truck, but for the price of a newer motor its way cheaper then buying another truck right now.

Yes 100% he probably got it dirt cheap knowing he was gonna haft to probably drop the money into it sooner or later. I’ve got a 2006 Tahoe with 291k on it and I have every intention of putting a new motor in it when it decides to go.
In 1999 I was already 33 years old, had been living in Tokyo Japan for 4 years already, been a technician for about 6 years, mobile since arriving in Japan and stayed there for a total of 20 years, in 2014, moved up in the Mountains in Baguio City Philippines, my second time in this country and have been here ever since but not as a tech, no money here, but I took up Computer Science at Saint Louis University to achieve my BSCS in 2019, was working on a JAVA programming long term project then decided to get ready to move back to the USA and took up auto repair online to get up to speed to transition back to a mobile tech in 2024 in FLORIDA. Love your channel and I think YT wants folks to transition over to SHORTS but personally, I do not like them, nothing to learn from them and I wish that yall have more diagnoses going on, thanks for the great videos that I am interested in.
I still have my 2000 Durango with 106.000 miles. It has a 5.9 liter 360 V8. Runs great.

With the price of new SUVs and other types of vehicles these days, Dropping $8000 for a reman engine is a bargain. Body wise, the Durango is in good shape so it's definitely worth it.
Awesome Alex《☆》👍🏾🤳I Love my 98 Dakota with the 5.2L V8 & 4spd automatic. Almost 200K miles now. She's been my daily driver for the last 15 years. About 8 years ago I had an issue where it didn't want to shift past 2nd gear. I changed the fluid/filter & adjusted the bands to no avail. I was ready to change shift Solenoid when I remembered having a similar issue on my older 92 Dakota V6 automatic. Then I remembered Transmedic Shift improver by GUNK. I poured in 1/12 oz bottle 8 years ago and She's still shifting like new✌😎☮

Glad I came across your video! I have a 1998 Durango that i've had to keep topping off the anti freeze and for a couple years could not figure out why since there were no leak anywhere. I don't drive it much due to it having a bad heater core that was replaced once 10 years ago but I start it every couple weeks to hear it's 213,000 5.7 purr. This winter after it snowed I was having a cigar and hit the remote start and was surprised to see some green anti freeze coming out of the tailpipe! Well, I, like whomever owns the one you worked on will pay to get the engine work done on this 26 year old that has never left me stranded. So you have my vote for keeping the old thing running, but i'm bias I have 1988 Chrysler Lebaron that I haven't yet let go.
I was 14 in 1999 started working in 1999 My teacher had three of those Durango's she absolutely adored them still see them around the first generation. Just like '90s Dodge Ram they are still everywhere! I would do the same if it's not rusted too much! Awesome content bro❤️👍💪💪

I recently bought a 1995 Dakota that is mint and under 140K miles. It needed a transmission rebuild. I paid 3K for a new transmission and it is a great truck now. It's hard to find an extended cab V8 Dakota that isn't trashed. The 318 is an awesome engine. I'm all in at about $4K. I've already driven it 2K miles without any issues. These are the last of the good ones.

Believe it or not I have a $100k+ Ram TRX and a 99 Durango SLT 5.2 That I bought 16 years ago for $3k lol. I still can’t get myself to get rid of it. Got me through the worst winters and helped get me where I am today. Loyal dependable truck. Check engine light is not even on😂
I love the older Durango, they looked cool and were pretty fast. If there is no rust and that body I would consider putting a new engine in it. Brake lines are cheap, I don't play around with them, get new ones. I hope your guy is doing ok.

I had a 02 SLT PLUS. Blown head gasket on the 4.7L. If I had the 5.9L I would STILL have that Durango
bought an '04 ram 2500 4x4 slt crewcab with 5.7 hemi and solid front axle for $3000 last year that didnt have the best maintenance done on it but a good runner. ive got a couple grand into fluids, gaskets and some other parts that needed to be replaced. it has 200k+ miles on it with classic rusted out rear wheel wells and a little rust on the rockers but the interior is nice and runs and rides nice now that things are up to date which were loooong overdue.
not that im eager to but id have no problem sticking a couple grand more into it if something major failed. i can rebuild the engine myself if need be and if the trans fails, id put a salvage yard one in for a few hundred. anything repair needed would be cheaper than buying new or even newer used. ive seen people wanting $12k for the exact same truck i have but the body is much cleaner. but for what i paid and now that ive been thru this truck and i know what i got, im keeping her till the frame rots off.

I replaced my brother's 5.9L in his 2000 Durango. Bought the engine from Auto Zone. 3yr 70k mile warranty. I replaced water pump, radiator, fan clutch. I upgraded it to the heavy duty cooling system. I also replaced the oil pump drive shaft. I think he was into it for about $3200 in total. I ordered alot of the parts online because it was much cheaper than buying parts from the auto parts store. I ain't gonna lie,it was alot of work. Un bolting the exhaust Y pipe was a bugger. I had to remove the inner fenders and cut the bolts in half with a Sawzall. But its running good now and no problems. 😅

@AlexTheCarDoctor Well,it wasn't like I never did that before. Just about every vehicle I've ever owned,I bought broke down out of somebody's yard...cheap. And then fixed myself. That way I never have a car payment. In fact the last 2 vehicles he's owned, he got from me. My other brother has one of my old cars too.

I was 19 in '99....I bought my 1st 98 durango in 2001...I put a SHELBY body kit on it with 22's and put DUBANGO on the plate...I miss that truck!!

The AMC 4.0 couldn't meet emissions demands by the government. The 4.0 couldn't reach the performance demands the average buyer wanted. However, the 4.0 can get a 4.6 stroker conversion I believe for more horsepower.

Very nice southern truck with strong rust-free undercarriage. Michigan Durango's from this era is almost all gone. I can see how this was worth it to the customer. Alex to be honest his vehicle right there is better than these modern Turbo charged vehicles so it seems like a lot for an old vehicle, but as long as he does not have an accident and total it out he probably has a more reliable vehicle. I did the same thing well will be doing it. I got a 2003 GMC Sierra that has 175k miles so I know a new engine is in its future, but I know the 1999-2005 GMC Sierras were some of the best truck GM ever made IMO. By the way Jasper engine? I hear a lot of mechanic shops use them because the warranty is so good. I want to know also have you ever dealt with Powertrain Products and if so had good luck with their engines?

12 so you and I are about the same age. older doges I think as long as the body wasnt shot ,interior etc . its mabey worth it . but later chrysler products ( and others) are plagued with issues no way, when it flatlines then its a one way trip on a flatbed to the yard
In my opinion if you foolin around bending brake lines and shit like that you shouldn’t be touching a vehicle in a mechanical way.
Just drive it and take it to a shop that has a good reputation.

I've always liked that bodystyle Durango. Since it already has a new trans and cats, I say why not. The question might be how much will the 8 grand will hurt. There are lots of people, myself included, don't wanna spend $50k + on a new truck.

With a new Durango in the 40-50k range, and the price of used vehicles, I think it’s money well spent……even if he gets another year or two out of it (hopefully it will be more than that) I think he did ok…….best wishes to your tech also.

Magnums are so easy and cheap to rebuild, that i personally would rebuild the origional engine with 30 over, new pistons, rings,cam, roller lifters, timing chain or gear drive, gaskets, maybe port and polish and deck the heads, align hone the block and do some improvements while in there, who knows it could last 500k with proper care. Tons cheaper and better in my opinion than todays 100k trucks that blow up all the time at 25k😂😂😂
It’s best to keep your vehicle as long as you can and take it to a mechanic like this who cares, is knowledgeable and knows what he is doing and is honest! New cars are too expensive these days and just aren’t worth it
Getting super hard to find today. A lot of them has retired and passed away.
It totally depends.... If the vehicle fits your needs and you know you can easily get parts for it and it's not a rust bucket then it makes sense to fix it TBH. Money doesn't grow on trees and $8,000 is heck of alot cheaper than even a halfway decent used vehicle like that. There are only a few reasons you get rid of something:
A. You can't get parts for it anymore. Used to kick a 2000 Mazada Protege around the DC beltway for 350,000 miles given I have a 120 mile commute. Car had a funny accessory drive setup where apparently the 99's used a 5 rib belt setup and for early 2000 they switched to a 4 rib belt setup but then mid 2000 switched back to a 5 rib. AC compressor clutch went out. Couldn't find a new compressor or compressor clutch for the car anywhere. So that was that.
B. Rust claims it. Had a 2006 Dodge Ram that I bought from a family friend that lived in the rust belt after her husband passed. Great thing about boxed frames is they are super strong. Bad thing is you can't really get at them to fix them or rust proof them well. Frame broke right behind the cab. That was that.
C. Doesn't fit your family anymore. When you have kiddos it's all about the family unit.
D. It's a money pit. If your putting more money into it in 6 months than you would be on a payment then it's time to consider sending her off.
It really helps when you can do most of the maintance yourself though.
Exactly, money doesn't grow on trees. Spend 12k for an older vehicle with a new engine, which will outlast any 40k new car bought today.

I had a really nice 4x4 durango that i sold. The transmission was terrible and i just needed something to drive and i wish i had been able to hold onto that one it was so so clean
Compared to the price of a new vehicle, it's cheaper to fix the vehicle you have!
Buy something with an LS and disable DOD if it has it. Change the oil on time and 500k is not far fetched. It really does matter the kind of miles too though. How many cold starts and heat cycles? Maintenance and how it was driven too. I also would like to point out that the paint on the block is probably junk yard paint and it isn't the original engine.

Always worth it to not have a payment got rid of my newer honda for a 91 f150 and even with getting 1/4 the mileage I spend 3-400 less a month

First generation Durangos can fit 32X11.5 tires on factory 8" wheels with no modifications.
My old Maxima has 400k miles and the engine has never been opened. It still has the original engine and transmission, i would definitely spend the money to put a new engine and trans if it needed it.
What year is it?
Just because it's burning oil, doesn't mean it needs a new engine. On an older pushrod V8, replace the valve stem seals and piston rings. It's that simple and it's a very easy job on those engines. I've done it quite a few times in Rams and Durangos and Dakotas along with GM and fords. Its a very cheap job too, and it cleared all oil burning up. 300k is nothing for those engines. Spending 8 grand on a plain old Durango is quite stupid though. If it was an R/T i could understand it. Yes it's still cheaper than a new car, but they could have found a way lower mile, nicer Durango for cheaper than 8 grand.

It is worth it if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape. However, you need a classic car insurance policy where there is an agreed upon value if the car is totaled for any reason. With ordinary insurance they do not care about any repairs you have done. It is only the age, mileage, and overall condition of the body and interior they use to assign a value. This Dodge would be worth maybe $3-4K top dollar in the eyes of an insurance company.
I HAD a 2015 Ram. Luckily I know my way around engines. I could tell the cam and lifter problem was getting ready to surface. How? You have to know what to listen for. The chirp. When your next to a wall as in the garage you can hear a chirping sound. That’s the roller on the lifter failing. Damage already done you just don’t know it. Only had 57k miles. Got rid of quickly. No more Dodge or Chevies for me.
If it’s not a rust bucket definitely put new engine in it. I was 18 back in 1999

On that newer Durango, put the hellcat oil pump in that HEMI!!!!!! On that older one, Yes, 8k is well worth it versus purchasing New (Costs) or used (unknown maintenance history).

Well Alex, ill tell you this.....If i was dealing with a mechanic like yourself, id replace the engine. Because it seems as though youre gonna go the extra mile to fix the surrounding issues as well. That says a ton in a customer like me making that decision.

Im 40 next month , getting old lol. The big 40. I remember 1999,i started doing oxy cottin 80mg. The start of oxy ruining our country, then they replaced oxy with heroin,then fentanyl. I just dropped about 4 k on my 02 buick century with 40,000. miles. Had transmission issues out the gate, intake gasket done last month. The new cars are junk. Stick with older cars.
My question is since the truck had 350K and now with the new engine and transmission, do the Miles start back to zero miles

That shit right there is why I’m super cautious when driving. I always look both ways even if i have a green light. I keep a distance from other cars on the highway. It’s not your driving you have to worry about, it’s everyone else’s.
As long as the frame is good and there is no rust holes through the frame rails, then keep putting new engines and transmissions till you get hit by some ding dong and it gets totaled.

Not a good deal for customer. You can find the same vehicle with 150k miles and better cosmetic condition for 3-5k. If it had sentimental value then sure but not like this.
I rather keep 99 running any day 8k for engine is a deal rather than 2023
