  • I ran a marathon in Halifax, Nova Scotia without training. What happens when you don't train for for a marathon? That's just what I'm looking to find out! I signed up for the Blue Nose Marathon, Atlantic Canada's largest marathon only two days before the race, never having raced more than a 5k. Watch now to see how it went!

      Not sure what the "running room people" would be but as someone who has run 5 marathons, I'm impressed that not only did Oliver complete it - but did it w/o hitting the wall. I struggle late into the race even though I've put in tons of training. Either way, I think Oliver hit the nail on the head though. I don't really enjoy marathons but I do them because of what he said - they are a physical and a mental challenge. I clearly have not mastered it yet, so I keep pushing on.

But the world we live in where people are sometimes doing extremely dumb things to get views your conscious should naturally nag you to say something, people can get hurt doing something like this without training, and it’s important to respect the challenge you’re taking on. Congrats! Always... I just wanted to jump on here: Even if you are fit, this is usually NOT how you should approach a marathon. The bones, ligaments and muscles need time to adjust to that specific type of strain and the heart does as well. There have been several recorded deaths of people who ran marathons without sufficient training (heart attacks etc.) and so many people who have had injuries that took several months to rehab because they pushed their body to a limit it was not used to.

  • @ekstor1
    @ekstor1 Před 7 měsíci +66

    This is insane! I used to do a lot of half-marathons, typically right under 2 hours (my best time was about 1hr 55min). I never reached my goal of running a full marathon, but I estimated that at best, I *might* be have been able to do around 4hr 20min - 30min. When I was watching this, I was sure that you would hit the wall and collapse half-way through. I was impressed that you finished but stunned when I saw the time. Incredible job!

    1 year of consistent training and you should be able to shave more than an hour... easily.
    The secret is to increase your "easy" pace (and thus your maximum aerobic pace) by consistently doing easy and steady long runs.
    However, if you wanna get below 3h30 without dying, then you'll need to add a serious dose of harder workouts (weights, sprints/strides, hill repeats, long intervals,...) so that your body gets better at recycling lactic acid and maintaining good, efficient running form, even when you're tired.
    You have potential 👍

    Caution to all, from an experienced 60+ marathon veteran here - do NOT think you can just go from no exercise period, to running in a marathon. Look up the story of the late Jade Goody, for warnings on that one.
    This looked a bit click baity to me. Looking at this guy's performance and build, he blatantly keeps himself in at least decent physical shape - even if he's not a regular long term runner.
    That's very different from doing a marathon with 'no training'. He's said also he ran up to 15k - so he knows what its like to run for long periods, without significantly stopping. That IS training of a sort.
    Good he made it, respect to him. But he's not a couch potato is blatant, so don't try and make out he's one... 🙄

      @@OliverPriemer Thank you so much brother! Honestly, I was watching videos 2 days before the marathon and I stumbled upon yours. Was glad I did because when I found it hard to move forward, I thought that I am not alone. Many others have felt like me in the same scenario. So that made me go through.

    Congrats! I’m currently doing a couch to 5k exercise plan and am almost done with it. I was hoping my town would do its annual Turkey Trot this year, however I haven’t seen or heard anything about it so of course they would stop it when I finally hope to participate in it lol (some years I work Thanksgiving morning). I might have to wait until the Spring to find a 5k to participate in.

    Man, you deserve more views. I thought I was watching a channel with over a million subscribers! Really amazing pace for no training. What’s your background? The longest you’ve ran was 15km but were you ever a runner before this marathon? I’m currently training for a half marathon, but my pace is so slow (8-9:00 min/km) because I struggle gaining weight in muscle mass… I can go as fast as 6-7:00 min/km but never sustain it because they feel like sprinting to me. Anyway, I hope you keep posting more videos about running! Love what you said at the end of the video. Hoping that marathon turned you into a runner for life!

      @lifewithastrid Před 7 měsíci +1

      Same, training for my first half but I'm hoping to finish in the 3 hour cut-off time. Most half marathons where I live are even with a 2:30 cut-off time which means that's too fast for me even with consistent training.. They say super slow but steady runs make you faster in the future so I'm just hoping that's true lol. At this point I'm just too slow to sign up for a full marathon here.

    • @lifewithastrid
      @lifewithastrid Před 7 měsíci

      @@reunionrocker3482 Not too sure about that. At big marathon events there's more untrained people at the starting line than you'd think.. They don't put it on CZcams but they definitely brag about it to friends, family and coworkers.
      Is it good for your body? Absolutely not. But if you have a good base endurance (can be from whatever other sports you've ever done) and you dose it very well by not starting way too fast the hardest part is the mental part.

    I did this same thing when I was 17. The furthest I had ran in a day was 25km. I decided to run a marathon that was a week after my spring track season. I knew nothing about "bonking" and ran the race with no food. I bonked at about 30km and just had to walk. I walked no more than about 10 steps when a gentleman started walking next to me. He ask "did you hit the wall?" all I could do was nod. He handed me a banana and said "eat up, I will see you at the finish" and he ran off. I ate the banana and instantly felt better. Started running again and I passed him about 5km later. Ran a 3:40. Saw the gentleman at the finish corral and told him thanks. He laughed and said "I meant that I would be at the finish first, I wouldn't have given you my banana if I knew you would beat me."
    I ran 3 other marathons over the next few year (without training, because I was young). I would be sure to bring some food, but I would get a banana from my mom or a friend along the course and be sure to pay it forward to someone else during the "bonk zone" of the race.
    I never broke 3:30 in the marathon which is no surprise with out training. I was blessed with natural endurance. Unfortunately a partially torn ACL ended my endurance running days before I could grow out of my "meh, why train" phase.

    Lol so cool to see this. I did this in my mid 20s after my barber convinced me. I ran 5ks and 12ks in the past but a marathon as always on my bucket list. After not running for 3-4 years, my barber and I signed up for a marathon that was 1 week out. I finished in 5.5 hours. Ran for 13 miles straight and cramped up bad at the 15 mile mark. At the 18 mile mark, I just sat down and couldn't move my feet; they hurt so bad. A kind lady gave me an Aleve pill as she saw me in excruciating pain. I waited 5 min and zoomed off the ground like a horse out the gate. End result -- I was using crutches for the next 3-4 days. I could barely walk.

    Pheidippides didn't train for those 40km but...that was his job, a messenger, in his last 3 or 4 days of life it's said he ran +250km and fought in a battle, at the end of which he ran those 40km to deliver the message of the victory, dying after (the 'original' Marathon > Athens is 40km, the 42km were introduced in the first modern olympics for logistics purpose)
    Congrats and thanks for the message!
