Tudor Black Bay 58: A Week On The Wrist In Italy - My Likes & Dislikes

- After owning and borrowing almost every type of Rolex and Tudor Submariner, it's time to reacquaint myself with the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight (39mm with black dial and bezel) as I continue my search for the perfect dive watch from these two brands.
Join me for a special episode filmed in Italy's stunning Lake Como region, where I spent a week working, vlogging, and getting to know the most successful Black Bay from Tudor by far. Is it all hype or does it live up to its cult-like status? How does it compare to all the other Submariners I've owned over the last decade? In this #watchreview video, I share my likes and dislikes along with my thoughts on the Black Bay 58's design, evolution, history, and its Urban Gentry status as a true #strapmonster.

TGV “I will not be posting much over the next couple of weeks” Posts two killer videos. 🔥 🍷 🍕 🇮🇹
This is my go to daily wear. Vintage feel with modern quality. It doesn't have all of the charm but that's why I have other watches!
Excellent comment Kurt, a wonderful reason to collect. Love it.
Thank you for the comment.

Any movement issues?
@@BWen3 no, it's a rock solid movement with great warranty and service intervals.

Loved this show!! What an amazing setting and views! Well done on getting out there!!! We’re the airports empty??;) having not delved into the vintage market yet(it’s coming;) the BB58 is by far the best NEW diver I’ve owned or reviewed in terms of value, spec , brand history and SIZE!!! Drilled lugs would definitely have been nice . I think they need a distinction from The Pelagos and not just the size, having the Snowflake and traditional Subby markings homages (which is what it’s aim is) the roots of the beginnings and the moment Tudor became its own dive watch.
One day I look forward to handling an old Tudor Subby! I’ll pop round one day;)
I think the BB58 is one of the most perfect watches out there. It’s my new daily and I have absolutely nothing to dislike about it.
I own a BB58 and honestly there isn’t a single thing I dislike about it. Tudor’s value for money proposition in today’s market is incredible, what you get for your money feels almost unmatched
Tudor needs to add a ceramic bezel to the BB58 and it would actually be perfect in every way,
@@robc8468 tbh I feel like ceramic just wouldn't really fit to the vintage inspired design
@@robc8468 terrible idea.
I like it except for the fake screws. Why did they put those fake screws on?
Completely agree. Today’s Tudor is Rolex’s yesteryear. Best value proposition out there.
Lake Como was my first stop in Italy when I was just 16 for soccer tournaments. This episode really brought back some good memories. I love how your channel has developed over the years. Onwards and upwards!
I love the tie-in with Duncan near the end. Makes the whole thing nicely connected but breaking the chronological order of events. Kudos TGV, you really know your stuff!
In spite of expectations a lot of content already flowing out of beautiful Italy - and some outstanding watch talks. As always, well done TGV!
Any video that includes Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem is going to be epic. Can't wait to check this out man.
🙌🙌🙌 You know your Mozart. I love it. You classy devil you!
Thank you my friend.

Have you heard Zebignew Preisners Lacrimosa? It's beautiful.
I'm singing Lacrimosa again this year with the Mission Valley Choral Society here in Lake County (POLSON, MT)
Did you hear Rank1 - Sensation White 2003 Anthem? Lacrimosa on house.
Love mine. Love the lack of complications, simple design, low-key presentation, excellent reserve, and freakishly accurate time keeping. Also like the respect it gets from watch people.
I got my BB58 a year ago and have worn it nearly every day since! Got to say, I think I prefer the snowflake hands and round hour markers to either mercedes hands or square hour markers, but I can definitely understand your opinion on them.
Thanks as ever for the great vid!
I’m the same- much prefer the snowflake hands.
@@manuel_winde I Love snowlake, don't like mercedes hands...Guess I'm a weird chap.
There was an original Tudor Submariner issued to the Canadian Navy in the early 1980's that had the same hand/dial configuration as the bb58, a lot of people don't know this & assume tudor came up with this for the bb. I think it looks fine & I actually prefer it to the Mercedes hands!
I agree…. I never even thought of them as such a contrast until he mentioned it.
Thanks for the great video, and a glimpse of travel, I'm missing that so much! I'm really enjoying my first Tudor, a BB 58 Bronze.
Such a great video TGV! Love the travel vlog and review mix. All the best 🦖
So glad to see a video TGV, can’t wait to watch this, have a good day sir!
Amazing content and production 😍🤩... your channel is on a league of it own! Thank you 🙏
Great montage and review. Thanks for taking us on the journey! Ciao . . . In boca al lupo!
I didn't begin to understand this watch until I saw it in person. I didn't begin to lust over it until I tried it on. I don't know if I have ever put on a watch which wore so well and complimentary. Surely no other dive watch has felt so natural on my wrist.
Excellent video, TGV.
Always love your videos, keep 'em coming and thank you for this awesome content.
That intro was incredible, always appreciate the true time and effort put in to each video
That view!!! Wow! Thanks for bringing Italy to us.
Great editing Tristano. I can't afford the majority of the watches you cover, but I can enjoy your cinematic direction :D
Take care!
Thank you my friend, you will be glad to know the next watch review cost 10% the price of this. I will always try to cover all levels, it would get so boring just luxury watches, besides, most of the fun to be had is with the most affordable watches IMO.

Tristano,
The way you review all levels of watches is one of the things that makes your channel the premier watch enthusiast channel on YT. Do you remember when everyone freaked out a few years ago because they were afraid you were "selling out" or at least moving to only high-end watches? Of course it was flattering, only because they did not want any messing about with your format. I like it when you wander off and talk about coffee, clocks, clothing, whatever. Thanks for doing what you do so well.
Safe travels,
Ian
Thank you TGV for an another wonderful review of Tudor! I really love Tudor watches!!! Stay healthy and well! Nicholas 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🌊
Awesome. Video. Thanks for taking us along. Cheers.
This was a banger episode - thanks for the quality content!
What a way to enjoy my Sunday afternoon watching this review . Once again thank for a well informing video..Til next time , chow...
Beautiful Lake Como! Thanks for sharing the trip with us. Glad to see you arrived safely. Enjoy!
Grazie John!!! A video in Italy would not be complete without your comment.
I hope all is well. FYI, a little sneak peak, I have something aviation related you will love happening in the next few weeks, can't say any more.

Hey Tristano, you lucky traveller! Don't miss a ride on one of these fabulous RIVA boats. There is a restoration area by the lake and you sure will find an opportunity to drive one - at least as a passenger. When I was a little boy, I used to water-ski behind such a mahagony beauty. I still remember the sound of the big Chrysler Marine V8 engine.................and the punch of that thang. 😂😂😂
Saw this at 11:30pm, here in england, and regretted if because I won't be getting to sleep until midnight now.
Loving this content!
That appears to be a great job and I hope you enjoyed every moment!
Love both my bb58 in original and blue , but, never first choice for the wrist.
I have to say.. I loved the shots of your surroundings more than I did the watch. What a stunning place! So one black bay 58 and one trip to Lake Como added to my ever growing wish list. Nice vid! 🍻
Hi TGV, awesome video! Always a highlight of my day. I’m still saving for a Tudor for my graduation soon-I’d like to see how the new MN Tudor wears, too! Anyways, I was reading an article on the dial and hand combination of the black bay and was surprised to see that it is an actual combination used by Tudor, and there are old ads of it. I can’t wait to see your review of the FXD. Hope you enjoyed Italy!
Thank you so much Maximillian, and your comment made mine!
I saw that very same ad you speak of, but the watch is even more elusive, I can't seem to find proof it ever actually existed.
So glad you brought it up.
Best regards,
TGV
Beautifully made video. I own a BB58 and love it. I like the snowflake hands which are far easier to read than Mercedes hands. The combination of the traditional Sub dial indices and snowflake hands works for me. Mine is on a leather strap (and the leather enhances the warm gilt tones of the dial far better than the steel bracelet). I would have liked spring bar holes in the case.
Great content as usual. Hitting these right out of the park
Loved the views of the Lake Como region. Gorgeous! Thank you.
What a fun video to watch & stunning scenery... I LOVE this watch, BTW.
TGV, funny you should post about this watch. I've been eyeing this exact model for some time now and this is just the video I was looking for. Thank you. BTW as per our recent conversations and your previous video, I purchased the Holben alligator straps for my vintage Omega Seamaster that we discussed and I absolutely love it. Hope your trip to Italy is a great success.
Onwards and Upwards!
Thank you my friend. I am so pleased to hear the strap recommendation was useful. I can't tell you how great Holben's have been to me as a faithful customer myself, the way they organize their website and have the best stuff makes it difficult not to buy everything! Enjoy your Omega! 😎🥂

TGV
That intro is always 10/10 the view you had is out of this world great video ounce again⌚😎🤠
Dico solo una parola: polenta 💖...grazie di cuore per questa tua visita in Italia 👍 ...al prossimo anno.
Hi Tristano, glad to see you enjoyed the quick work trip here in Italy. The bb58 is, in my opinion, a real banger. I consider it the true heir of the dear old sub, a watch that can be purchased by pretty much everyone (if you save some money) and that will always be on point no matter the outfit or the occasion. Big love from Italy, ci vediamo il prossimo anno
TGV that hip hop mixed with classical music for the intro (simply brilliant) Bravo! 🔥 😎 🔥 #LIT
Ah bello, what a view TGV. Italy 🇮🇹 is always amazing, great review sir 😊👍🇮🇹🙏
The most worn watch in my collection, mainly due to its versatility and no fear of knocking it about vs. Other more precious / expensive items. Love it on the Tudor fabric.
Fabulous video! Love the scenery and your cinematic instincts are always top-notch. So glad to see you got a director gig! Something about the bb58 seems a little too trendy to me. The bb-gmt is a real stunner though in person, my favorite tudor so far.
Wonderful, TGV. You managed to catch that feeling, just after arrival and a little delirious from a long haul flight, of sudden difference, maybe the raven's call and those faint conversations in another language drifting across. Lovely.
For me, it's Sea/Speedmaster time, I think. Some homework to be done from older vids although newer models will be the interest. Maybe there is something of that sudden difference, again.
Woohoo!!! Another episode from TGV in Italy!!!
Love your videos, they are artistic and full of soul. Keep it up UG!
What a top shelf video. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Wear your watch in good health, my friend.
Great video my friend! Very nice scenery indeed. I've had my BB58 for a few weeks now and I love it. Very accurate. Like you said, more positives than negatives. The rivets don't bother me at all but I feel like the bracelet could be improved with the addition of half links and also an adjustable clasp. The half link issue was solved by Uncle Seiko; they manufacture and sell them specifically for the BB58. The bracelet now fits perfectly. Cheers!
Another highly njoyable episode. I do think of your videos as episodes.
Outstanding production with an eloquent review of the Black Bay 58 and Lake Como background sets this off as the best review of BB58. Thanks TGV aka the Guv’nor for those who know!!
Good evening tgv, firstly apologies for the late check in , secondly may I add what a superb video the perfect blind of watch content, amazing location a scenery, edc , you name it what more could we ask for, so we thank you for that sir, good to see you arrived home safe and sound, all the best my friend, regards Ryan.
Love this type of review! Very similar to the day date weekend review!
Another amazing video TGV 👏! I do ❤️ my BB58, but sometimes feel they went a little far with the “vintage look”. I’m not a huge fan of all the gold, but I’ll warm up to it eventually (hopefully). However the quality of te he watch punches above it’s weight 👍🏼. Lastly you hit the nail on the head in regards to this being a “Hype Watch”, I’m confident that’s the reason a lot of collectors bought the watch in the first place. Keep up the great work brother!
Miguel
Watch content of the video was secondary to the travelogue content, which was stupendous! Bravissimo Tristano!!!
Was not prepared for that beat drop. Ciao hope to travel to Italy some day
Hello mate. I commented on your IG, on my personal account. Its a stunning piece. I have the blue but might have to get the black after seeing how effortlessly you rock it. Congratulations
Fantastic episode, thank you for sharing! Greetings from Spain!
i know this is late-but just found this channel and convinced me to buy this watch as a graduation gift to myself! looking forward to watching more videos soon
Revisiting this video as I’ve just ordered my BB58 and can not wait 🤩
As so often is the case, you have perfectly articulated my misgivings about Tudor’s Black Bay range which I’ve always somehow felt but struggled to quite know why?
Maybe my weeny 6.5” wrist is a factor here but the only current Tudor that speaks to me is the BB 36mm and, even though I like that a lot, there’s still something that causes my trigger finger to rest a while.
Enjoyed that 👍I have the black bay bronze and love it. Been on my wrist for three years . Going to go through your videos. OUT
Absolutely gorgeous, Lake Como! On my list of destinations to see in the future.
Excellent video as always. This was the first luxury watch I purchased and I couldn't be happier.
Beautiful watch, they are still over my personal preference price range. Hope you had a great trip 👍
I see you did a nice tour of Como, including Villa Olmo and the city center as well as other locations on the lake. I hope you enjoyed it!
Beautiful intro music. Love Lacrimosa from Mozart.
I love the BB 58 but always seem to go to other watches to buy. Perhaps it's because of it being an hommage to old vintage watches, which I don't always like. However maybe I should consider it next...
Great video, fantastic location. Enjoy!
Hey Tristano! Hope you're having a nice time here! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the bb58
I spent 6 weeks training on Lake Como in 1969. We were in traditional North American canoes and gathered stares everywhere. But after you have traversed that lake in every direction, in every weather- we were ready for a major River in the North. Yes. I love the snowflakes and miss the squares. Won’t be on my list for a long while.
Another great one TGV. I’m glad they put you up in a quality hotel. Hugo would be impressed 😀
🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
Thank you Russ, he would deffo approve

TGV always so positive. Love watching your videos.
Another great video, as we speak I'm trying to decide whether to purchase a BB58 so your timing was impeccable, I shall refer back to this video a few times while I'm making my mind up!.
Another great video. Thank you!
Hello chap!
Yeas as you can notice I have been watching (re-wachting I should say) during the weekend your older videos especially the collection reviews as I'm looking for some inspiration at the moment, and it's very nice seeing a new video popping up while I thought it was an old one too 😀
Very nice review again, I do share 100% of your opinion about the 58, I love it and I'm sure I would love it but in the main time I know that the negatives you pointed out especially relating the néo-vintage mimetic elements will bother me in the long term period.
Hate and love relationship with this one, we will see if one day I will end up buying one , but I guess I only need to go for a vintage diver..
Wishing you a very pleasant week
This is my first watch and it's been great. Can't wait to expand my collection, if only the boutiques had any stock.
Man that gold and black Tudor with that pip of red is amazing. That colorway is right up my alley.
Wow…Lake Como! Was watching an episode of *Il commissario Montalbano* last night, so you might say that warmed me up for this surprise video from you. The GMT Roller is nice but I'm warming up much more to both the Tudor BB and (far more approachable for me from a cost standpoint, natch) Squale TGV. Nice representation of your collection you've taken "on tour." Haven't settled on a diver at the moment, but I'm pretty dead-set on 40mm max diameter. Glad the trip turned out well, and that you had fun, even while away on business!
OMG, I adore that show. I would love to live in a house like his and swim on that beach every morning.
Thank you Barrett, awesome comment.

Awesome vid. Italy and the Tudor’s are amazing. Thanks TGV SEIKO IS KING !!!
As a BB58 owner, I entirely agree with your synopsis. For me, most of the "negatives" have been avoided by wearing it on straps... I just with they'd have gone with the "lollipop" hand set found on some vintage Subs, it would've maintained the Tudor heritage and kept the Mercedes hand haters at bay!
As a daily wearer, I suits me perfectly. Mine's just as frequently on boats and in the sea as it is in meetings and restaurants. Considering the swap to a two tone pre-ceramic Sub soon however.
Thanks for another great video! I have to say I'm not a fan of Rolex and their dive watches, but the top hat crystal is amazing! If I were to ever get a Rolex, it would need to have that crystal. It's a shame people can't appreciate these vintage features that give watches their character. Not every watch has to have AR coated double-domed sapphire.
My 79220R is still one of my favourite to wear for daily. It is still currently in my active rotation 👌 something about the Rose smiley dial that reminds me that it is special
I just got the 41mm version, the standard Black Bay, the other day as my first luxury watch and I must say - Tudor has really done something quite special with these in my opinion. The gilt dial just makes my day! Fantastic content as always, TGV.
@Harry Donovan Ha! You’re right. I never even realized one was rose and the other was yellow. They both look great to me though. And don’t let the sizing fool you. My wrists are not large at all, but as long as the lugs don’t overhang, I’m good with it. All comes down to personal sizing preference though.
Hi Chubby, Just curious, to why you got the 41mm version, was your wrist size small? I was thinking of 43 mm watches and above but my wrist size is small and may overkill the whole look
Beautiful scenery!
Have had a Tudor 1926 for a little bit and love it. Picked up the BB58 on the Leather strap today and very much love it so far.
You and The Timeless Watch Channel is the GOAT of watch reviews
I’m a beginner watch collector and this is my grail watch
It's a good grail hope you get it one day never listen to naysayers get what you love don't eva listen to anyone but you on what you wear because at the end of the day its your money your body the watch goes on your wrist no one else and when you get it wear it in good health.
As MC said your grail watch will change many times, but don’t be influenced too much what other people tell you. There are thousands to choose from hence why we all have different tastes. You buy what you want to buy!
Watching this vdo in 2024...and enjoying it...bought this watch few days back, and now excited to wear it soon...it will possibly be my last "big" watch buy...each watch has its own story to tell and the history is always fascinating....
Same just watched today and bought mine a few days ago. It’s an awesome watch!
Another exquisite thread of this author... but it's been beautiful!
Yes, Italy has a diversity and culture like no other, further more the insane topics. The highest level in Arts, Architecture, Enginering and Science too. I think that they got almost all the good things of life in that land.
About these extraordinary pieces you brought one more time to us, I,m not a user from Tudor yet, but I consider their product as a really great oportunity for getting an "entry-luxury" watch... nowadays. But at the sametime I believe that this oportunity is also offered by another holly icon in the watch industry as Longines. In this last case, I also know that Longines produce its owns calybers or in-house movements, the same that Tudor does as well. I,m in love!!!
Thank you very much for your effort T.G.V. !
SALUDOS!!
Great video . I love my BB58 I also love Italy. It has been 25 years and I still dream of Venice . I will never forget Florence . I'm a history nut and Rome is so amazing . Keep up the good work. Thanks .
Glad to see you are enjoying your trip!
Any chance you do a review of the new Tudor Pelagos FXD when you get the chance? Also where are the food pictures/videos? 😁 🍝
Great video TGV. I like the 58, but my favourite in the Tudor line-up is the Blackbay 41mm. Second favourite, the almighty Pelagos (blue)
I only just purchased the BB58 last week after waiting more than a year and to be fair I do feel it lacks something. In saying that, how many times do you hear people say the same thing about the Rolex sub. I will consistently wear the BB58 for the next month where I do think my feelings will change considerably, as I do find the watch extremely comfortable to wear. Keep up the good work!
Excellent review and really well put together as usual sir. Still on the fence about the BB58. I've seen my colleague's when I was in the office a few weeks ago and it did look good on a nato, but not sure if it's a fraction small for my wrist.
I'm very interested in the wrist strap compass in the background of your table-top shots. Do you remember where those are available from. The ones on eBay don't cut the mustard ;-)
The BB58 just has the right proportions and materials. That red marker is such a nice touch, along with the slightly rose gold. Also like was mentioned it goes with so many straps.
The right proportions for people with a 6.5 to 7" wrist but completely the wrong proportions for someone with a 7.5"+ wrist. Over 8" and you can forget about it.
Wow surprise episode from Italy. I’m excited.SEIKO IS KING !!!
Thank you Ed, Seiko is indeed king!!!

Such stunning scenery. Combine that with watches and TGVs forensic assessment 👌
I tried on the BB36 yesterday, as I was in my local Tudor boutique and I have to say it fits so well. Such a great little watch. A 36mm oyster case is really special. I need to try an explorer on next! If Tudor ever make a gilt dial BB36, or Rolex make a gilt dial Explorer, I think I will be forced to buy one!
100% agree on the design point and the car analogy is perfect - to me the BB58 feels like when the Mini was relaunched (and maybe the new Defender), while a lot of care clearly went into the design it felt derivative and almost childish compared to the original
I own the BB58 in gilt and I definitely enjoyed your review. For me the rivets are not an issue or no divers extension. I simply keep mine on a strap. If on the bracelet which is rare I will wear going out to a show either at the Kennedy Center or special occasions. Just in case if anyone has issues with the bracelet needing that little extra go ahead and order that Uncle Sieko half link. You won’t be disappointed.
As for the snow flake hands and rounded markers I can agree with except for one thing. When scuba diving or snorkeling I can see the hands much clearer than I can with my 5 digit sub and Mercedes hands so For that reason I learned to love the BB58 handset.
Lastly, the BB58 gilt really shines under candle lit environments and has a warmth to it in that environment. Not sure if you have experienced it in that situation. I have to also add with this the last two videos were great! This review was spot on and glad you were able to experience the watch. Keep those videos coming!
Ha this summer holiday we stayed at an appartement at lake Como right above the James Bond movie villa la gaeta. Fond memories and an spectacular view on te lake...
