  • Africa's Great Rift Valley or East African Rift - Hell's Gate National Park, Kenya. The Great Rift Valley that runs for some 7 000km along the eastern side of Africa is a bit of a misnomer. It is more accurately called the East African Rift and while it was originally thought to be one continuous fault line that extended from Lebanon to Mozambique, it has been established that the rift system consists of three microplates, the Victoria Microplate to the north, and the Rovuma and Lwandle microplates to the south.
We filmed this video while working on a book called African Icons and stayed at The Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort in Kenya. We visited Hell's Gate National Park that lies to the south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya and took in the wildlife and wonderful scenery including the Fischer's Tower and Central Tower columns, and Hell's Gate Gorge.
