A Small Herd of Elephants Digging for Water in the Majale River at Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana
A small herd of elephants digging for water in the Majale River at Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana.
In the dry season elephants cover great distances in their search for water and will dig wells in dried-up riverbeds, using their trunks and front feet, to get at the water that seeps up through the sand. These wells provide a welcome source of water for other animals, and impalas and zebras are often seen waiting nearby for the elephants to move off. Elephants tend to hog a waterhole and even lions are known to give way if they see them approaching.
We have just published both standard and limited editions of our latest book: Mashatu - Land of the Giants. It contains large format photographs and informative text that we believe beautifully captures the spirit and allure of the incredible Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana (www.mashatu.com).
The book highlights the reserve's unique past, remote wilderness and astounding diversity of wildlife, with emphasis on all that is large and giant - history, vistas, elephants, Africa’s big cats, plains game and prolific birdlife.
To further enhance enjoyment of the book, we have used QR codes to link videos to some of the photographs and you are looking at one of them now.

Zebra and giraffe stampede across the dry, dusty plains of Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. Zebras are skittish animals and it takes little to make them gallop off in a panicky stampede across the plains. This rather prompts other animals in their proximity to also gallop off, just in case there are predators about that they have not seen. Inevitably the stampede kicks up clouds of dust, which...

    • @RogerdelaHarpe
      @RogerdelaHarpe Před rokem

      Hi Quentin. On this safari we were still using Nikon but we did however use our M43 systems on many subsequent trips. We had both GH5 and G9 bodies, Pat using mainly the 12-60mm Leica and me the 12-35mm Panasonic. Both were awesome lenses and while the 12-60 has a bit more (rather useful) reach, I think I may choose the 12-35 if I had to. The 12-35 is a constant f2,8 (which is nice), it's physically smaller and my overall impression is that it's sharper. I have no scientific data to back that up - just my impression. Our most used lens on safari would be the Leica 100-400... Hope this helps.

      Thanks Dave. Nothing huge - just a little unprepared. Pat picked up a bad puncture which we plugged while on the road. I then discovered I hadn't brought along a valve for the CO2 "bombs" - thanks heavens Bruce had one. Alas, the sealant wasn't as effective as it should have been so the tyre still leaked a little. Back at camp I tried to add some new sealant and in the process unseated the bead of the tubules tyre. Eventually managed to get everything together and the tyre lasted for the rest of the trip but it was a messy process.
