- This week we are in Taiwan and I decided to play the role of a totally clueless white American tourist who only speaks English, and then prank locals by suddenly switching to fluent Mandarin Chinese. What an interesting social experiment with funny reactions!
This is part 1 of our language learning videos in Chinese in Taiwan - next time we will be exploring the street markets of Taipei and I’ll be putting my Chinese to the test to an even greater degree, by trying to see if people believe I grew up in China or not! Make sure to subscribe and come back for that fun video!

His voice changes when he switches to Chinese, he suddenly sounds like a Chinese old man. The transition is just fascinating. I know it's because of the fact that Chinese is an extremely vocal and tone based language.

@@eeeelayna it's not a matter of laziness, it's a matter of necessity. It is often _very_ useful for non-native speakers to learn English and only marginally or situationally useful for English speakers to learn another language.
That's what happens when you're the dominant culture. In Europe at one point just about anyone with pretensions to civilisation needed to speak Latin. The Romans didn't need to speak barbarian (note, the word barbarian derives from the fact that the Romans heard "bar bar" when the strange northerners spoke and so decided to name them barbarians).
Similarly later on pretty much everyone of any education spoke French (I know, a dark time in our history). Then came the stages of empire with the French, Spanish, and English competing to be the preeminent western civilisation (with an honourable mention to the Germans, Dutch and Portuguese).
The English won out in the end. So now, just as back then, it is more beneficial for the less dominant nations to learn the language of the more dominant ones than vice versa. Laziness has nothing to do with it.
The fact that we're all lazy entitled snowflake ingrates is an entirely separate issue.
@@eeeelayna yeah i wouldn't necessarily say lazy. but most places in america don't teach a second language class until high school, and at that point it can be a LOT more difficult to pick up a language to fluency. There's also hardly any chance to use and practice those languages outside of the classroom if you live in a homogeneous area, so people end up losing those classroom skills too. at least from my experience & observations!
no no yes, that’s true. There is a lack of necessity. I guess that makes the english-speakers who go above and beyond to learn a language they don’t necessarily need to a little more respectable.
Haha, I’M a “lazy” English speaker. I don’t have an overwhelming desire to learn another language but I really respect anyone who does, English-speaking natives or not
@@eeeelayna I have the desire, but neither the facility nor the endeavour. I'm stupid and lazy in other words.
When she said “yeah dummy” haha that’s awesome
Frost Rusher ok
It just goes to show how intolerant they are of foreigners, but they'd call you a racist if you pulled that same stunt in your country
Jack Venom yup
That made me giggle 😂, she’d mean it in a joking way too
Edward Alcala hey jack, how did you see intolerance from that clip?? I saw people who were pleasantly surprised that he could speak the language. The younger people didn’t even seem to react that much. The older
People interacted less with him when speaking English as
They had little to no English themselves.
