It would be MUCH fairer if it was 6 Chinese vs. 1 Secret White Guy
his English accent is the giveaway. It's so white. Its the accent of someone who grew up around family with the same accent.
Everyone else had softer English accents, which indicate growing up in households that may have had differing accents.

This was really fun to watch. Thanx for posting.
I’m a bit older generation Chinese American, and from my experience, I would say Xiaoma’s accent when speaking Mandarin would seem kind of rare for Chinese-Americans. It has quite a strong Beijing regional tone to it, which implies someone who actually grew up in that part of China or someone who learned Chinese as an adult from someone from there. From what I’ve heard, Chinese-Americans who speak Mandarin tend to have more of flatter standard accent, unless they’re joking around or speaking with close family, which becomes like a dialect. Of course it could also depend if they immigrated to the US, and if so at what age, and how or where they learned/studied Mandarin.
He definitely went wrong by choosing to say he was Chinese-American raised in the US. He should have at least said that he went to college in Beijing or something because, you're right, he has a clear regional accent.
Yeah, he absolutely should’ve said he was a Chinese mainlander
I think the first few ssebtences came out very American --> Chinese; hes been known to imitate beijing accent though
ABCs tend to lose the more flavorful regional ‘flourishes’ for some reason. 😂 Equally telling was his English accent - very white as Caleb says. Asian-American English accents are just slightly different (can’t quite put my finger on it, it’s very subtle - like one layer under what may be a Brooklyn accent, or some other thick regional American accent, there’s sometimes/often? an Asian-American tonality).
It isn't really an Asian thing per se, but I notice a lot of Asian Americans and Canadians have a subtle "west coast" English dialect. I think just because they live disproportionately on the west coast and British Columbia. The west coast of North America doesn't have a strong accent, but if you listen carefully you can notice.@@user-jk5um1om8l
"and I'm white!" how can you not look at this man and think pure innocence
I don’t get how an American accent is “sounding white” when literally all of us that were born in and grew up in America have an American accent. Like even black Africans will tell black Americans that we have an American accent.
@@itsZombieManI mean his Chinese pronunciation isn’t perfect, but there are probably a lot of abc with not perfect pronunciation
@@itsZombieManI never thought about it but that's true. After a generation or two, we all start having an "American" accent regardless of race.

You're meant for this YT stuff. I've watched several of your language vids/ordering in xyz/etc. Never seen a reaction type watch along vid from you, and you did a great job. Too often, people feel the need to put way more of their own commentary in than necessary. You did a good job of letting the vid play and doing quick pauses with inside information. Well done
Whoah man I remember watching your channel a lot when you were strolling through Chinatown, can't believe how far you have come in channel growth and also linguistic progress. Your work on Navajo shows you're a true theorist and student. Come to Edison and get some thali and hot pot, you could get a lot of material by exploring the little pockets alongside the big cities.
Still, this video is a pretty awesome culmination of how well you've grown into the Asian American community! You're a CZcams Asian, you made it lol. I was definitely smirking and squeaking at the nerve-wracking moments alongside. Keep up the good work!

@@Lemonade_Stand_ No he’s not. That is part of the appeal of the channel. The allure of someone speaking languages and learning them quickly. I watched him speak Tagalog/Filipino as he “learned” it quickly and most of what he says are basic sayings you can memorize. Also, the pronunciation of the words in Tagalog was atrocious but the Filipino people obviously will be nice because he is white and white people speaking Asian languages fascinates people. Everything he says is always about eating, learning, saying a “little”, and simple chit chat norms like, “What taste good” or “How much does it cost” or “I want to visit.” He never says things that stray from common phrases.
Hi Xiaoma. Just want to say I enjoyed the video. You don't need to worry about your "existential threat", you speak and sound really good so there's absolutely nothing to worry about. As you know, tiny nuances in accents are actually very normal in every language. Even the "American" accent came from a combination of people who brought it to America, and then evolved in America itself too, it's not even one "accent" depending on where you are in America!
TBH, your accent is great for a northerner, and I actually got you on your choice of words when you talked about the cilantro!
Loved it!!! I wish you spoke each of their languages to them!!! 😅
The brown girl at 3:25 is actually speaking a South Indian language called Kannada, surprised to hear it out of the blue on your channel haha! If anyone was wondering what she said : "I learnt to swim as a kid, but as I got older, I gradually forgot how to."
Yeeaah! Kannada lets goo! Actually a bit different to the Kannada im used to, usually hear native ppl speak it in my life. Didn't catch it at first.
I've just studied in Western Ghats and I was not expecting to hear Kannada today!
Caught me off guard
cool factoid but how do you "forget how to swim"?
@@AndyTaken In India city kids typically don't learn to swim in their very early years, it often happens a bit later through actual lessons from teachers, and I'm guessing swimming wasn't yet second nature to her and lack of practice or opportunities to take a dive can affect something you 'learnt'. I've heard this exact same thing from multiple people here, I find it weird too that someone can forget such a thing but alas, it seems to be the case!
His reaction when he hears himself saying "I'm white" is so relatable lol
You just know they made him say it exactly like that too :)
Should've just "and im not"

The guy that said "bro sounded white" sounded like the whitest one ironically
Nah, he definitely has that "Korean than hangs out with a lot of urban people" mixed with "white guy named Caleb" voice. Sounds like he has a white influence on him, for sure, but I could hear the Asian parents in his voice. Hands down the most Korean people he's been around, minus his family, was watching Tokyo Drift or K-Dramas. Arieh straight up sounds like Miracle Whip being spread on Wonder Bread when he's speaking English.

I think Xiao needs to practice speaking in English with a Chinese accent.
Many people when you hear speak in English and you can still hone in on their native language. You can just tell. Xiao's American English was just so good that it really kinda countered his Chinese being so good and authentic sounding imo.
The way he said "cilantro" gave it away lol
Well he's Chinese American
I agree, but I guess he would be reluctant to mimic a stereotypical Asian American accent 😂
Talk about a quick way to get canceled! lol
I agree, but our American culture is really stupid and people are afraid to do that. Learning to speak like a foreigner in their accent is one of the best ways to learn how to interpret English as a 2nd language. I learned to speak English like a Japanese person, and it's much easier to understand them. You're learning which substitutions they're making due to the limits of their language. English has limits too, like we do not roll r's. Being afraid of offending people has crippled us in many ways. You can bet no foreigner is going to be afraid to try to mimic us. That is a huge advantage.
This was a super fun episode! You've definitely inspired me to pick my Spanish back up and to also start learning Haitian Creole.
Totalmente, deberías retomar el español ^^

I think your language skills are amazing. I’ve been watching you since the beginning and you always amaze me!
My Japanese mother tells me that wearing shoes in the house caused other problems besides tracking in the outside filth. Traditional Japanese houses used (and still use) Tatami mats as floor coverings, and if you walked on them with hard shoes (like Geta), the reeds would break in the mat and you would be left with sharp ends that poked you in the butt when you sat on the mat. This necessitated the early replacement of the mat before it was actually worn out. So, it was seen as not only unsanitary, but very wasteful.
Both though, try to clean dirt out of tatami... :o
"tatami" is the Japanese word for "mat", so saying "tatami mats" is like saying "mat mats".
@@davidbroadfoot1864tatami mats are made of materials not common in our mats, that's why it needs an distinction, .
@@stefthorman8548 no, it's just "tatami" ... not "Tatami mats" as if it was a brand name. Calling them "tatami" is fully specific.

I love your videos and I love jubilee’s videos ! Don’t know why I just found this can’t wait to watch
This was really good. I really enjoyed it. 😃
Good job on jubilee! As a Chinese American who’s spent over a decade in China, a few things from the video gave away your non-Asianness: 1. When you said “Pocky”; the ultimate goal for an Asian American is to make your parents proud; 2. Favorite part of your culture is almost always food; the thing you said about China resonates more with mainland Chinese; 3. Chinese Americans tend to watch more k-pop, c-pop/k-drama, c-drama than Bollywood.
Because I can speak fluent Chinese and Cantonese, it’d be much easier for me to tell that you are the mole. Your Chinese is excellent but it does have a tinge of an accent (reminds me of an enthusiastic language learner).
Very cool, thank you for sharing. Glad you waited to watch it. Watching it with you for the first time and seeing your genuine reactions to it was great. Thanks again!

lmaoo the way you said cilantro was so white sounding tbh but this is hilarious
Exactly!! Cilaaaaaaantro. I thought for sure he would get voted off for that reason alone.
That's not a "white" way to pronounce; it is more likely regional dialect. I'm white and nobody where I'm from pronounces cilantro like that. In fact, that's the first time I've ever heard it pronounced that way, so it may just be him.
...All this time I thought that's the way you're supposed to pronounce it... And I'm Asian living in North America...
@@Hamburgers4Haiti He 100% pronounced it a distinctly white American way, Cilantro is literally "Coriander" in Italian so the correct way to say it is phonetically which he did not do
@@IllusionQueen4Eva Si-lahn-troh, cilantro is literally just "Coriander" in Italian so you say it phonetically but Americans use it to differentiate coriander leaves from coriander seeds

First time here and I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis of these incredible feat of ruins.
“Bro sounded white.”
How? Why?
I’m Asian, and I hate brand names.
Tbf, a lot of asian cultures seem to be very brand orientated. I don't like brand stuff cause I think it's dumb, its like walking advertisement, but when I was younger, my mother would constantly buy me brand names like it's to show we can afford it? Or like represents some kind of stature? (as a Korean)
I believe its apart of the college stereotype that foreign exchange students only wear name brand.
He does sound real white. Caleb does too though. And the whole point of that game show is to talk about “brand names.”
He sounds white is a bad way to say it but his Chinese has an English speaker accent. I'm assuming that's what they meant.
Probably because a bunch of them were Californian or something. I dunno.
