I have a small covered patio area with an outdoor sectional sofa and was in need of a coffee table for it. I thought it would be neat if I could design one that also had a surface that could be lifted up and inward to become an eating surface for those seated at the couch. I thought it would be even cooler if it was on a diagonal so that, regardless of where you were seated at the sofa, you would have easy access to the table surface. This is what I came up with and how I made it! If YOU'D like to build it for yourself, I'll have detailed step-by-step plans available for download on my website... so check it out!
Special Thanks to Zach Hipps from Byte Sized for all his time and patience while helping me with Fusion360. Please go and check out his content, subscribe to his channel, and tell him I sent ya! / zthipps
Thanks for watching! This was a challenging design and a fun build! I figured I'd take a moment and answer some of the questions that I've been getting here.
Q: Is the top heavy to lift?
A: Not since I used Cedar. Cedar is a very soft and light wood that is great for outdoor furniture because of its resilience to the elements. In this case, it was the perfect choice. If you build this out of a more dense wood, expect the top to be a little more challenging to open.
Q: Aren't you afraid of accidentally bumping it closed when it's open?
A: It's actually more difficult than you would think. The top pivots up and out, meaning that for it to close, it takes a lifting action. However, if you're concerned with it, you could use some of the left over 1" dowel and inset it into the support post with a mortise in the leg for it to lock into.
Q: How sturdy is the table? Looks a little flimsy.
A: It's a little wobbly as you deploy it, but once that support post is in position, it's stable. Obviously, you can't do handstands on it, but it will hold up just fine for dinner to be had. It's similar in sturdiness to one of those fold-up card tables that Grandma always uses at Thanksgiving for the kids to eat at.
Q: Is there storage in it? You should have added storage. Why didn't you add storage? I could store things in it!
A: Between the diagonal supports and the support post that hangs down from the table surface, the potential storage space is very minimal. Yes, you could add some slats across the bottom, but you won't be able to store a ton of stuff in it.
Q: What did you use for finish?
A: Thompson's transparent water seal
Q: What program did you use to design it?
A: Fusion360
Q: Is Fusion360 hard to learn??
A: Yes
Q: Did you really put fish in the heating registers of your college dining hall?
A: You better believe it!
@FishersShop is woodworking your actual job or a side hustle?
Just a hobby.
@@FishersShop nice
Where do you buy the self sorting lumber? I can't find it at the local home store
What spray rig did you use to apply finish? Have you done a video on it?
Fisher's Shop is the Bob Ross of the wood working world. So easy to watch. Keep up the great work and funny outtakes!
yes he is and it is calming and funny
upside down legs are just little happy accidents
Omg yes. I can fall asleep to his videos they’re so soothing. I never Listen to peoples adds but I do his cuz the way he talks is just satisfying
Yes! Makes it look so easy but us mere mortals could never recreate it.
Agree! “Are you peeing on my table?”
Dog: “It’s my table now.”
Definitely my favorite content creator. Great work as usual!
Dude, the bloopers, that's totally me in my shop, ever the exterior dialogue between me and myself. And I don't even have a camera running. Love it.
Im the meanest person in the world, to myself, in my shop. You dumbass - yup you screwed that up again - man that looks like crap. Then at the end of it all, "hey that didnt turn out half bad."
My dialog usually involves more swearing. Much more swearing.
Much much much more swearing with the biggie words and an occasional tool tossing episode.
Peter Filardo
How could this happen is my way to often and then figure out how to solve the holy xxxx issue. Great job on the touch of reality.
Same here. And I talk to myself in first person plural. Please don't tell me that's weird, I'll just be worried.
There are plenty of boring, straight forward people on CZcams. Humor and charisma with good instructions can attract people just as much, probably more, than just instructive content.
This is great stuff
Love watching these old vids I missed. Today I cut a walnut glue up 22 15/16 instead of 23 15/16. I’m so glad I’m not the only muppet that can manage making beautiful furniture using the cut twice measure once, then glue and cut again methodology.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I screw up
I just love your subtle humor. Makes it even funnier.
Did he have to do the self-sorting lumber bit?
No.
Did it take forever?
Yes.
Was it hilarious and worth it?
Always.
He did that for us. Never forget it.
Awesome video. Love the humor and the REAL LIFE of any wood worker. You always see 10 minute videos of projects working out “perfectly “ but never see the reAl side of things. Again great video.
Thanks Tim!
I’m not sure if I’ve seen a single one of your videos that I haven’t wanted to do. And I look forward to the outtakes every time. You’re awesome, man.
Well thanks so much! :)
Oh thank god im not the only one who messes up!!! Please keep the outtakes going. When mistakes aren’t shown it gets discouraging bc the other guys make it look so simple and easy.
I love the table! I’m gonna make that!
Awesome! Have fun with the build, Tim!
I really like the outtakes because it shows that I'm not the only one that stuff things up
I love that you set expectations low, and surprise yourself every time!
The outtakes 😂😂😂
I thought I only did dumb stuff in the shop, appreciate your videos and honesty. Great table BTW!
Thanks, Gary!
10:59/11:00 - the eternal sound of the happy inventor. Love it!
Thanks for the last 30 seconds. You showed the little frustrations I encounter in every project :P
Once again... thank you so much for the "outtakes"! I am much more capable of accepting my bonehead mistakes with every project thanks to you.
You got it, Nate. :)
This was awesome. I bet your shop smelled heavenly while you were working this project. I love your sense of humor. I aspire to be able to do a project that looks half as good as one of yours
Thanks, Joni!
I have watched hundreds of DIY videos, but gave never enjoyed a video as much as I did this one. Amazing idea, build and commentary. I loved everything about this.
Thanks James!
Awesome video man! Love the table. Also your sense of humor gets me everytime.
Thanks! :)
That is an absolutely beautiful table . I never really realised just how brethtakingly lovely looking cedar is .The outtakes were great . Clearly your dog does not fully recognise your genius efforts.Ha ha ha .
Thanks so much!
This video was great....but the outtakes were AMAZING 😂 thank you for adding them to the video!
ok, You are officially my new favorite woodworking channel. Thanks for including the outtakes, it means a lot to amateur woodworkers like me to see that you call out your stupidity in the shop just like I do. Sometimes in this instagram world we live in, we always see just the finished products of others, and the frustration of our own projects and we want to give up. Thanks for keepin it real.
Your videos are worth watching not only for the skilled craftsmanship but also for the subtle jokes (self sorting wood indeed 🙂).
:)
Love your sense of humor...classic...so funny and you have to listen closely..
Great, two projects in a row that I must build now! I really gotta stop letting my wife watch over my shoulder.
Get busy, David!
I really enjoy your humor and can identify with 90% of the blooper reels. Great stuff!
Glad you like them!
Loved the design. It's come out really nice. Hope the table surface does not wobble when it's extended out
I love it! I will be getting the plans and saying "crap" a lot in the near future!!!
You got this!
Love the commentary, humor and the builds - appreciate your videos, your the first channel Ive seen add bloopers, much appreciated!
Glad you like them!
I always enjoy watching your videos as they're informative and fun with great sarcasm throughout. Your bloopers remind us we all make mistakes . . . . And even better you're not a novice like me so gives me great hope as my skills improve. Im always telling myself off and calling myself stupid . . . . usually for really simple idiot mistakes just like your upside down leg!
Keep these coming. Great finished product as always
Thanks! :)
Ta chaîne est formidable pour plusieurs raisons. Tu montre tes erreurs en fin de vidéo mais tes constructions valent celle d'un menuisier professionnel.
Je le dis en connaissance puisque je suis un professionnel.
Merci pour ton humour également
I've never giggled so much while watching a building project. Thank you for sharing your GLORIOUS sense of humour.
Thanks for sharing your mistakes; all the rest of us make mistakes, too. Loved the table!!
Another great build Drew, the colours that popped out were amazing, i see why you love that wood so much. Oh and i think your dog was making its mark on the table, as his property now ha ha ha.
Barry (ENG)
Hah, yup! Thanks, Barry!
Your stop frame animation skills are highly under-rated! Considering the effort it must have taken to do the 'self sorting lumber' bit all for a 'small joke' its a testament to your commitment to high quality content!
Thank you very much!
Love the commentary! Martha Stewart, insider trading, taking top off... keep up the witty banter!
I love how awesome this turned out! Also this is the first skillshare ad I've watched all the way through in a long time. Loved the evenly spaced jokes throughout!
Thanks Zach! And thanks so much for your help with the project.
Just started woodworking about a year ago and realized your stop block on your miter table is nicer than any crooked birdhouse I've made. Love the channel!!!!
I really like your video, this is an amazing creation and you showed us your mistakes so that it allows me to forgive myself for sometimes making mistakes in woodwork. Thanks for sharing your experience, this is one of the best videos I watched during my self quarantine.
Thank you so much!
You have the gift of narration man. Keep it up. Loved this!
Thanks!
I liked the Idea, totally pro, clean workshop, nice family man. thumbs up, last minute of the video was superb, we r sometimes moran all of us
Love the way the table looks and operates! Perfect for the uses you specified.
Thanks bud!
Not sure if I like the table or humor more. Thanks for sharing!
I watch woodworking videos all day, to learn and get ideas. This has been one of the most enjoyable videos I’ve seen in the last 5 years. Thank you for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a great video and project, but the bloopers are the best part.
That dry humor is great.
I have no need for a table like this, but watching you build stuff always gives me inspiration for stuff I DO need.
I watch your videos as much for the humor as for the inspiration. Thanks.
I watch for the wood working ideas... But mainly the outtakes 😂
Just found your channel, you are totally the woodworking version of this old tony.
Really enjoy your videos!
Snuffaluhfaguss yes
I love this piece. One of my favorites from your channel. I think you could use a locking pin though. I can visualize someone hip checking the table top down while food and drinks are on it.
Loved the outtakes, made me feel normal.
The subtle jokes you make are awesome. Keep up the great work !!!
Terrific humor. Keeps me coming back to your channel.
How funny, someone else that speaks just like I do. Also, speaks to self the same way. Love it!! Beautiful herringbone pattern on the top of the table.
Looks gorgeous! I'd maybe add a slide lock, or hook lock to the main prop-up leg so it won't close if someone accidently bumps into it.
You certainly could. Closing it requires lifting and pushing it so bumping it closed accidentally is unlikely. But a lock on there would definitely eliminate that possibility.
Great project and really cool design. I love all of the dry humor.
Thanks Scott
A couple ideas for add-on's later, if you think they have any merit. Where the lift arm touches the top rail, a dent in each corner edge might appear over time. If that should start to happen, countersunk screws in each member at that point with the heads just touching each other, would prevent further denting and keep the top level (although the leg extension and V-channel will probably prevent that). Also, a full bottom spanning and resting atop the lower rails would provide some useful storage, for games, cups, mats, napkins, etc. (plus prevent spiders, wasps and other critters from finding a home under there). Anyway, well done! I'd make this, but I can't drive the Home Depot forklift yet. Maybe someday.... :)
This is awesome. This is what I was planning on building for my deck. You have no idea how much I appreciate the outtakes. Makes me not feel so bad I good and have to give it another go.
Another great build mate, good to see you constantly trying something different.
Thanks! :)
Your ingenuity is admirable friend. Well done.
Absolutely HILARIOUS!!! Loved all the funny remarks and the outtakes at the end. Well done! The table is pretty cool too BTW.
Thanks Jason
This project was very cool and someday I’ll get around to the exterior of the house and then the backyard and then the patio and THEN I can do this table! Love the dog marking his territory...
Absolutely kinda liked your video! Excellent videography, very enjoyable commentary, good lighting, etc. Keep-up the good work!
This was great! I'm still busting my gut at the dog peeing by your table. This is really nice and think you for the bloopers at the end. I hate that you made mistakes but at your expense it makes me feel better when I'm an idiot and do something like glue a leg wrong. LOL
I always enjoy your videos! The best part are the bloopers!
It's very nice, thank you as well for the outtakes, I watched it in the morning before work and I laughed hard, looks like someone other than myself glues things the wrong way, a perfect way to set the tone for my day.
Very nicely designed me and your funny along the way, thank you for the learning comedy
Thanks for showing the mistakes. It makes me feel better about my mistakes
Very nice build. Enjoyable video.....thanks for taking us along for the build. It was fun.
Thanks, Mike
Woodworking and good humor; two of my most favorite things. Thanks Drew
Thanks, Adam!
For the 8 years of me on CZcams I have about 20-25 subbed channels, this is one of them. Great job for all the projects you did. Very good craftsmanship, love it.
Thanks!
Nice job! You almost have me convinced I could build that table. Also, I think it would be a nice storage spot inside it for Drew when he's outside, since he didn't show much respect!
This is the best woodworking channel on CZcams.
I've had an idea to make something exactly like that. Thanks for sharing. I really look forward to your videos when I get a notification.
Glad you liked it, Eric
You've got the dog's seal of approval!
Awesome project very cool how it's raised . Would make a great gaming table with a small built in shelf underneath for cards or checker .
You make woodworking entertaining! Love watching your videos they're informative and funny.
Thanks, Steve
All around awesome! (I chuckled at the Martha Stewart sorting joke, but then almost spit out my coffee at the insider trading follow-up!)
Great job thanks for the outtakes, it is really nice to know that someone of your skills, make mistakes like us newbie. I wish my my wood would stack themselves.
Awesome job. I work with metal for a living. And this makes me want to work with wood a lot more
Love the jokes and bloopers
Love the table! I love working with cedar and the table with the clear coat makes the wood pop. I bust out laughing when I saw the dog marking the table. Great video.
Once again, a beautiful project, an informative and funny, funny video! Thanks for doing what you do!
Thanks, Tim!
You make this look so easy, and add a touch of humor at the same time. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!
Sweet table - I love that you made it all out of wood!
Thank you for this. You are an inspiration,
A very clever idea. Despite my best efforts, I always learn stuff from your videos. Then there's the humor, like the water buffalo being born. Thumbs up to crush a troll.
Very nice table. I loved the video and outtakes. I also love how funny you make it, I agree to the spitting out coffee comment.
Dude I always love watching your videos!!! Your voiceover comedy is one of a kind and outtake are epic. Your not the only one that makes mistakes like that lol. Keep them coming brother
Thanks! Glad you like them
Man you were on your absolute comedic A game in this. Bravo sir
An absolute high quality video! Your style of videos on woodworking reminds me of the "New Yankee Workshop" with Norm Abram! ...with a little humor!!
Another great video Drew! Great design for a great looking table that is even better functionally. Keep up the good work!
Thank you sir!
Awesome job. I love the video and I love the outtakes even more. Glad to see I am not the only one who makes major mistakes like gluing in the pieces upside down.
Fisher, I love watching your videos, sir. Thank you for what you do, sir.
love your video style , great work on the table
This is such a lovely and beautiful piece!
I love the outtakes at the end, it gets to show me experienced woodworkers would still make mistakes like I always do, and I shouldn’t get too frustrated and give up.
I have to say I love the outtakes I'm watching this video and I'm thinking man this guy's amazing and then he's just a regular guy at the end.
Right? Thank goodness for those out takes. It's nice to know someone else makes all those same mistakes!
I like you showing mistakes. Most channels don’t. And you should do radio. Great voice. Love the design
I've been working on a similar design, except the top is diagonally split in 4 and all 4 parts lift up and out. Great to see it works.
That table is totally awesome! Amazing design!
Thanks, Joseph!
