My folks needed a new coffee table but one that wouldn't block my Dad's wheelchair from getting through. I designed this sofa table that has an adjustable height so that it could be put in front, on the side, or even behind the couch. In Fisher's Shop style, I make the first one a bit overly complex, but then I follow it up with a much more simplified version that you can make very easily too!
Special Thanks to Doug Neiner from "DN Handcrafted" for designing the title sequence. Go check out his awesome channel @ / dnhandcrafted
Mr. Fisher your video on showing how two build two different ways. One way for the seasoned woodworker and one for the limited tool woodworker is something other channel makers should do. Well done sir! God Bless.
Thanks, Keith! :)
Keith Current I was thinking the same thing. My dad wanted something like this for Christmas so this video caught my eye. I thought I could maybe make something like this in the future instead of the plastic and metal one I got for him, but seeing all the equipment used at first made it a bit too intimidating for me to try to make. Showing how to make it two different ways helped me better understand the design and the advantages of all the tools.
Absolutely agree!
Agree 100%!!! 👍👍👍
The "wow" your dad gives you at the end, and the look on your face, says it all. Pride. Joy. Love. Appreciation. What more can a kid want when making something for their parents? That and maybe wood worms in their living room.
Haha, thankfully I got all the wormy gooey things out. Thanks for watching and for the nice words! :)
They're powder post beetle larva. Lyctid is the species since they infest hardwood (broadleaf) woods such as walnut, ash, oak. They can survive in wood for years before emerging as adults.
Interesting! Glad I got them all out! That would have been a bummer if they popped out in a year or so and joined my folks for dinner. :)
The captain has spoken!
@@FishersShop Yes, mom would not have liked that! LOL
Dan Rao wut
Makes you think; *are there any that weren't found...yet...mom?*
When your Dad says "Wow!" twice I almost lost it. What a wonderful gift for a son to give his parents. Well done indeed sir.
Thanks so much, Alex!
could be one of those people who say 'wow' a lot lol...I have an uncle like that haha
@@rawlr9066 My wife's grandmother suffered a stroke, wow is one of the few words she can say with intent, so she uses that to convey as much as possible, and more of the communication comes from the tone and facial expressions. The mind is there, but it's unable to produce the words.
This is amazing!! I’ve only recently started my woodworking journey but I’m already hooked!! Thanks 🙏🏼

As someone who almost only watches CZcams videos for my "television" entertainment, you have some of the best quality videos in the woodworking area. Your videos are engaging, and informative with an awesome sense of humor in them. You bring beautiful work feasible even to us newer woodworkers. I hope you take pride in your work as you offer amazing content and I cannot wait to see more! Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks so much, that's very kind! Yes, I try hard to make videos that even I will want to watch more than once. So glad you like them, thanks for watching!!
You said it perfect! Exactly the lack of words I meant to use when I commented lol absolutely agree. When I get my notifications for CZcams channels that have just posted new videos, yours is the only one I actually go to. When I turn CZcams on I watch all different things but I always end up watching your channel and most of the time to brighten up my day.
Just joined the channel and binge-watching all of em. Great stuff. And right on the money TSquared. Great work Mr. Fisher, Drew. 👍
just wanted to add that I love the fact that you showed how to make the plywood one at the end. I don't have all the tools you have to make the first one (which is very gorgeous by the way), but I can make the plywood one. You sir are great, and I love the out takes at the end. It shows that you make mistakes too. Thank you for all of your videos. They are great.
This looks like a great design! and it was very nice to include a method for people who don't have so many power tools!
I think i'm going to try my hand at this, but maybe replacing the Hole&Dowel stopper with something closer to a clamp and rail. (the slider board having a cut down the middle, and the hole being replaced with a screw-clamp and a board on the other side to clamp the slider with.)
Have fun
The reaction of your parents at the end made me cry. My Dad passed in March, just before my 30th birthday. I inherited most of his old tools and when my husband and I got our home, the garage became my wood shop sanctuary that always makes me feel closer to him. Your Dad’s reaction reminded me of the numerous times I saw pride in my Dad’s eyes for my accomplishments. Thank you for this, and give your folks a hug for me.
Aw thanks so much, Maxine! That means a lot! I'm glad to hear that you've taken up the hobby and still get to remember your Dad that way too. Thanks for the wonderful comment. God bless!
The fact that you did another, more simpler build is so sweet. I want to build this for my mum, and I was racking my brain for ways to only use my tiny drill press and circular saw, than you went and did it all for me, thank you so much Mr Fisher.
Everytime I see you interact with your parents, I tear up. Your dad is clearly so very proud of you.
I am a floral designer and a hobby woodworker on my days off. When I hand a bride her bridal bouquet or just a customer I made an arrangement for and hear "wow" and see the eyes lighting up that is almost better than a paycheck (not quite but almost - still gotta make a living and pay the rent/mortgage) Due to that darn corona virus I am not working at the moment and was working only part time anyway since I am retired (just can't keep my hands off the flowers) but when your dad said "wow" I totally understood how you must have felt at that moment.
Yeah, it was awesome to give that to them both and I loved seeing his expression. Thanks for watching, Ursula
You think about other people, you are really caring. Thank you for showing the two ways. Your parents must be really proud of you.
My wife had a C-section and she is stuck to the couch for a couple weeks as she recovers. I was wondering how to make her life easier and then I remembered this video and I remembered how I loved the design and the accessibility it provided.
Thank you for making this video and the table.
Glad it could help!
I love that you do the outtakes. Shows people that things do happen while working. Watching these types of videos, people think that woodworking is always flawless and nothing ever goes wrong. Stuff happens and figuring out how to still make it work is one of my favorite parts of woodworking. Awesome table. Your dad looked very pleased.
Thanks! And you're absolutely right! I'm happy to show my screws ups if it means giving others confidence to get out there and build something for themselves.
I would like to add my vote of thanks to the host of others that complement you for thinking of woodworkers who have a limited number of tools in their shop. Many CZcams makers think that everyone has untold thousands of dollars tied up in woodworking tools. I believe that the truth is that most of us watching have just a few tools. I plan to make a few of these tables using the second set of instructions. Thanks again. I have just subscribed to your channel.
Really cool project! That was very touching at the end where you presented it to your parents. Thanks for showing that!
Thanks Bruce! That was fun to include
Worth it right there 👍
It is very cool that you get to take care of your parents and demonstrate to your dad what, in large part, he taught you. I am sure he is very proud. Great job on the project and great job tending to your parents.
Thanks! Yup, they've done so much for me so this is just a tiny thanks to them. I got a lot more thanking to do. :)
You should have wayyy more subs. My biggest gripe with other woodworking channels... "DIY end table...anyone can do it...using 30k worth of custom machinery" Lol well done sir!
Really loved the simple shop version. New subscriber and will promote your channel as much as possible! Keep it up!
Thanks braxton! Glad to have ya!
My Grandfatherand his father before him were both master woodworkers and I count myself blessed to have ben by his side to watch him work. I unfortunately neve learned myself. Much respect for the care you show your parents and the joy you take in demonstrating your father's lessons were learned and appreciated. You sir are doing God's work here in bringing up you children and passing on the knowledge of a truly useful art and skill.Thank you for bringing us along for the journey. Every blessing to you and your family.
Thanks so much, David! :)
This is beautiful. And funny. I wasn't expecting the Lionel Ritchie Commodors, Jherri Curl comment!
Glad you liked it!
Fisher, what's so lovely about your channel is that you don't just put your shop or your projects on display, but your bare naked humanity too. I've seen you do it in different videos in different ways, sometimes it's with your kids (I'm thinking specifically of the putting green video, how it opens on this heart melting home video of your son sinking his first putt), in this one it's your parents.
It's hard seeing our folks get old, but not only are you helping them out with a beautiful piece of furniture, you're setting a great example of what a son, a husband, and a father should be..... You're vulnerable, you're authentic, and to top it all off you do beautiful work. Bless up brother and thanks for making the world a better place for those who have the great fortune of encountering you.
Wow... well that's quite possibly the nicest comment I've ever received in my entire YT career. Thanks so much! 😊
How are you not more popular? Quality stuff here
It's probably because I sit with the nerds at the lunch table instead of the jocks. Just my guess.
Fisher's Shop I thought we were all nerds here?
embrace your inner nerd! My philosophy has always been, "You jocks go enjoy your cool and popularity. One day - you'll work for me"!!! Disclaimer: for you jocks, this comment was in no way meant to be abrasive or offend. If it did, my apologies. Now, get back to work!
he's very good, but a little to instructional and boring for the masses, in my opinion.
thatmountain, Isn't it nice that we all have a choice to watch or not!!
The woodworking is exceptional, and the quality of the video capture and editing is also, but the part that I enjoyed most is how much your parents loved and appreciated it. I enjoy the act of woodworking, but the real satisfaction for me comes when I share my work with my family, friends, neighbors, and yes, customers too.
Exactly! That's where I get all my enjoyment too. Thanks, Jerry!
You are my 'new' hero. Two different ways to make a lovely, useful item. Here in the UK, to purchase this amount of Walnut would mean I would have to sell a kidney too raise the funds.
Thanks for sharing.
Well you have two kidneys... so I expect to see some sweet walnut furniture out of you.
You're a good man. Your parents are lucky to have such a awesome son.
Haha, any more comments like that and my head will be too big to fit in the shop.
Nice I agree with Keith, I love that you showed the poor man's version also or limited access to all the wood working tools.
Total respect seeing someone make their parents lives easier. ROCK ON!
Love you videos and you are an impressive craftsman
Thanks, Belinda! :)
Great work! Beautiful build. What made me hit subscribe was at 10:20: "Right now I'm gonna build another one...only using the table saw..."
THAT was the moment I realized I'd benefit from seeing more of your videos with my half-garage, amateur shop tool setup! Thank you for BOTH parts of this video. Something to aspire to and something to do right now.
Awesome, thank you and welcome!
Wish I would have seen this a couple weeks ago. I wanted to get a version of this for my bed to have during my recovery. Had my surgery yesterday. I found a cheap plastic one and I'm using it. This would have been so nice. We talked about building one later. But I didn't know where to start. Now I can grab your plans and make matching ones for me and my husband. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds great Angie. Have fun! 😀
Thanks for sharing your family with us!! You’re a good son, and a good CZcamsr! Is that a word...?
Haha, thanks James! And yes... I'm afraid that it is a word. lol
What a Happines you bring to your parents...I love it.... You can see your Dad face......proud of you dude.
Thanks, dudette! :)
"....making another walnut jerry curl for my Lionel Ritchie costume." !!!! Bwaaaahaaaa!!! The entire house wanted to know what the heck I was laughing at!
Of course with cancel culture you'll need to delete this video before ever running for office.
That was a beautiful moment when your dad saw the table for the first time. Thanks for including that in the video. You are a good son.
Thank you so much!
Elegant and functional for all the right reasons. Family... This deserves a bump.
Even my blackened heart kinda warmed when your dad smiled. Beautiful moment.
I’d love to make a plywood version with some mitered edge coverings.
Very nice project for your Father.
"Perfect for whiskey sours"!
Great little project.
Thanks, Don! :)
BRILLIANT! Way to step it up, showing how to make it without the bells and whistles tools.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love how your parents play along with you on the video, nice work with the table!
That was their legit first impression. I made them wait around the corner. :)
You are a good man! Lost my dad 2 years ago, spend as much time with your parents as you can! Great build spot on!
Thanks much! Trying to do just that! :)
Everything was fantastic about this vid!
your parents looks and comments at the end, the 2 ways to make the project and the sense of humour! Too good! Quality
Thank you, much!
I really appreciate you taking the time to show a build for a beginner who only has a few tools. You're parents also seem really sweet :)
Thanks Helen!
Nice job, god bless you for think in the old people
Your parents were the highlight!!!
Hah, yes they are!
One of my favorite CZcams channels! I'm making two of these for my deck swing. We eat dinner on our deck in the summer months and when guests are here we want to eat sitting on our swing. I'll be making these out of White Oak & Black Maple from my property. It has been drying for 18 months. I already milled the .5" dia pins from 316 stainless steel as wood pins swell. The table tops will be made of oil rubbed slotted Teak to shed rain water. Very excited to make the thanks for the inspiration
Sounds like they're gonna be awesome! Have fun!
You're not the fanciest woodworker by far, but your functional projects and hilarious voice overs bought my affection
I love your videos. I can't imagine the hours you spent on editing. Amazing end product! Keep it up.
Love the design and how it turned out but mostly the smiles it brought to your parents.
The look from his dad at 14:43 makes me feel all warm inside. This is a wholesome thoughtful vid. Definately liking and subscribing
Well done.. the 'wow' at the end was ample reward I suppose... wish we could rate videos on youtube, would've given 5 stars to this one..
Thanks!
Fantastic work, Drew. Thank you for taking the time to show that this can also be done with some of the more basic tools that most woodworkers will have in their shop as well as the higher end ones. Both tables are fantastic. And, sorry to hear that your dad is now wheelchair bound. He is lucky to have a son that has the ability and drive to make things that will make both your parents life easier. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much! Yeah I wanted to make it an easily achievable project for everyone. Thanks again!
I love it when my square drill bit is so squeaky it sounds like a giant flock of possessed parakeets
Sarcasm?
Maybe
Awesome build, you made my anxiety go way up with that small miter cut. 😂🤣
love the out takes
I am so happy and appreciative that you did a simple modified version with the table. I just got into woodworking and I’m glad that you included new and nervous people!
Awesome, love having the two different versions.
Fantastic! Looks like a great project for our homeschooled grandson. TY
I couldn't have found this at a more opportune time...I'm right in the process of making the same thing. I was playing with 2 different designs... 1 metal with a wooden top and one made of solid wood but I think I like your design better. The adjustability is perfect.
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
You're a good son. Great work looking after your Dad. Great project that I'll be interested in building for my aging Mom.
Thanks, Jason!
Good job brother, nothing better than to get a smile from your parents with a project for them. Cheers from Venezuela.
Thanks!
You're parents seem so sweet and supportive.. You're a lucky man and a good son
She's your mom. She has to say it's fantastic! P.S. I like it too! Sending lots of love 💜 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵.
Seeing your Dad at the end 😭😭😭 I love how much he loved it in that clip
Thanks Mariah. :)
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I love how you created two similar projects in two different ways with the same outcome also love you including your bloopers and question for the viewers at the end of your video and the purpose you built the project for. This creation of video was great keep it up.♡♡
Mr.Fisher, it was awsome of you to do something so wonderful for your parents. Great job. Love the video.
I am just starting to get interested in wood working and really don't know anything about it, but this video was still super cool to watch! Also the Lionel Richie jheri curl comment was gold.
Haha, glad you liked it Kelly
Yes! A justification for the dedicated Hollow Chisel Mortiser machine :-)
Thanks for showing both! Going to make the ply version for my Dad too, Mom will prob want one as well. The list just grows!
Love it! Lost count how many times I watch it. Keep saying I will make this next Spring. :)
You should!
Late to the party but showing your parents reaction and the intimate family moment is amazing. I'm going to copy this build and make one of my own. Thank you for sharing this!
I just finished making my dad this. He is also in a wheelchair. Thank you very much for the idea. I just wish I could post a pic here to show it off. Lol
Absolutely Beautiful! I know I am just seeing this. And I hope all is well with Mom and Dad! And I am happy they loved it! Thanks for Sharing! 🙏🏻
Thank you so much!
Hi, I'm currently making this with some of my high school students and had them watch this video. Great design and finish. We are using Maple veneer plywood from HD. Great video and the kids thought were hilarious. Thanks.
That's fantastic! I've love to see a picture of the finished product!
An awesome example of seeing a need, solving the problem, then going the extra mile to make it look first-class. Great project and video, thank you for sharing with us!
Thanks, TJ! Always nice hearing from ya.
I felt that the walnut dowel was a bit unnecessary. Glad the world did not burst into flames though. Doing stuff like this as a gift for family or friends, but especially for your parents, is the absolute best thing that someone can do with woodworking. I'm totally going to do this project. Thank you!!
Built the sofa table from your excellent detailed plans. Used walnut and african mahogany. Turned out great thanks to your plan and notes about the build. Your plan was the best I have found online for my intermediate shill and tool level. Will try other plans soon.
i follow all your projects, you are funny and i learn a lot watching your videos.. but this video is special man.. watching your Mom happy and your dad happy.. that is the best part of the build. Thumbs UP.
Thanks, Marcelo!
Great job, and thank you for showing the out takes. As a amateur we rarely see the trouble parts but encounter them all the time.
I'm definitely an amateur myself so there's plenty of material for outtakes. :)
A wonderful life full of hearts!
Thank you to share the project
I can't beat all those super comments, and they are all truth.
I also read a comment where somebody asked why your not more popular, well I thinck the same.
Another super, and well build for the good, the bad and the woodworkers.
Willy from Belgium.
Thanks, Willy
@@FishersShop Happy to do that for you.
Those are some thankful and proud parents. Love to see it and this is a great build. well done!!!
What you found in the walnut were the last remaining vestiges of the rare 'Solvus Problemus' beetle that when intact will impart upon its finder true master-level woodworking skills. Many have dreamt of drift-free rips and cuts, ever-sharp tools, and consistently square corners. But once eviscerated, all it's mystic power will be gone.
That was super touching, and I love the two versions thing!
this thing came out great and i hope your parents are loving it! really like how you show 2 ways to build for those maybe starting out or with limited tools this is extremely helpful!
Great project, you're a very good son, looking after your parents in their advancing years.
Your dad looked so happy. Your mom is so cute with her enthusiasm. I love your channel and appreciate the newbie version! Subbed!
this is great. my wife has asked for something exactly like this. Thanks for posting
Thanks for including your parents in this. They are great!
That bit at the end where you get to see how amazed ur parents are with what you made.. thats why I got into woodworking..
Thanks for both versions, that's really helpful.
Great video, love your channel!
Need to build pair for my wife & myself as we both need disability type "rise assist" armchairs. The shop ones are far too expensive and the bottom rail & castors at 3in won't go under the chair. So Christmas surprise for Mrs C, sadly it will be the plywood not the walnut but I can CNC her favourite kitten images onto it to make it special to her. Thank you for the design idea. We will both enjoy the tables.
You're very welcome! I hope you enjoy the build and the finished product!
Wow....a nice adjustable sofa table n its all wood...what more could anyone want? Thank you for sharing your know how. I 'm still new to woodworking n this video has been exceedingly helpful.
To boot...I think its pretty sweet you made your parents so glad.
Peace, man
Thanks!
so satisfying to watch you make different stuff. Make more pls!
A great looking table in both versions. Fine editing, clean direction and your parents are lucky to have you as their son. You've made my day, many thanks.
Thanks so much, Bruce! And now you've made mine. :)
Dad 's proud face looking you..... Priceless!
Hey, thanks for the terrific video! But a SPECIAL thanks for the second part using minimal tools and simpler methods. Not that I was intimidated by the first half of the video but, you know, other woodworkers might be. Not me, of course, other folks. Not me. Not me. LOL Be well and God Bless.
PS: I just ordered this plan today. -N
You're very welcome! Glad you weren't intimidated. lol Thanks for your support too!
Fantastic!!! That is so Cool!!! That proud , appreciative , gleaming smiles of your parents!!!👏🏼👊🏻🙏🏼👍🏻 well done Sir!!!
Thanks, Steven!
