  • In this week's portrait painting video I aim to guide you along the development of this painting while exploring the concepts of form and structure. I find that there is always something new to discover with each painting, and especially when it comes to form & structure.

    First off, well done! What I really found useful: -the limited palette. - your palette preparation yet you refined your mixes as you went, achieving gradations, distinguishing planes, establishing shapes, etc. - your analytical mind as well as your ability to articulate what you are seeing and how to create that illusion (after all, it is a form of magic creating the illusion of a 3 dimensional form, a likeness, another "life" out of a piece of cloth and colored "butter"). What I struggle with(there is a lot I struggle with I will only bore you with a taste)
    - The difference between the shadows in a photograph and life. The skin, hair, cloth -whatever- in life is the same color. It is the light that changes. In a photograph it seems to change to grey's and almost black as it curves away from the light. If I try to recreate what I see in the photograph- it appears "dirty" like smoke inhalation or soot. I am working on mixing the hue with a complimentary grays or mixture of ultramarine blue and Alizarin crimson to drop the colors tone in the shadows.
    - Hairline, how to make it not look like a cheap wig or hair piece.
    -Eyelashes, always too much or too little.
    Well, I have said too much. Thank you for what you are doing. It has brought me great pleasure and inspiration.
    P.S.: I am an (old) Orthopedic Surgeon- (newly) want to be Artist and your anatomy references are useful and accurate. I enjoyed you clarifying the neck is not just a tube but composed of key substructures which you articulated a few.

    Thank you again for the invaluable knowledge. I'm a total beginner.; i wish I was using oil...but for some reason I bought acrylic paint...which dries so fast. I'm waiting for a medium to come in the mail from blick. You have taught me so much about form and structure...I'm painting (practicing) portraits of different members of my family from photos. It calms me to paint...in this time of covid (which I usually call cofefe) Stay well...stay home. And thanks again.

    In a later video you used transparent white rather than titanium white, (just wondering if you made the switch and don't use titanium white for the final layer in portraits).

    Very powerful intro to what the painting demos will be about. Great detail on how to execute each area of the face color, hue, value. Love the strong teaching. If you have a chance, I would appreciate it if you could check my videos sometime.

    Hi, very informative video! I have a question in regards your "scrubbing" technique used to start rendering the values: this is almost like an underpainting which I would let it dry and then use it as reference to build colours on top of it...I am puzzled to see how you can easily do this wet on wet without making it too milky or muddy? Could you explain it please? Thank you

    Very informational and overall great tutorial, however, the overly technical jargon may be overwhelming for the general audience.

    • @mike7gerald
      @mike7gerald Před 6 lety

      You can understand the technical jargon because it closely follows his brush as he uses those terms.
