  • Join Jason Humble onboard his 11,000 rpm Mazda Rx2 12A Bridgeport as he takes on some seriously quick Aussie Muscle Cars at Mt Panorama, Bathurst, Australia. See an E49 Charger and Holden LJ XU1 Torana do battle as the little Mazda attempts to upset the party. The Historic Touring Car category is one of the most exciting forms of Historic Motorsport available today with all types of Muscle Cars and early JDM vehicles competing head to head on Australian race tracks.
    At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

    Who doesn't love a good RX! The Wankel when massaged punches well above it's weight for sure. Sounds like a of a can full of angry-bees and I imagine far better appreciated inside the can than outside where it has the sound of fingernails on a blackboard. 🤣

    This is possibly the best in-car footage of a classic car race at Bathurst that I've ever had the privilege to watch. Fucking brilliant! Watching the cars in front and willing on the rotary to keep up kept me riveted for the whole race. And watching that Charger from behind... Hey Charger! Awesome stuff. Thank you.

    Great to see what we used to call 'Touring Cars' battle the mountain. I love the way these beasts slip and slide, weave about under brakes as drivers saw away at the wheel. Brings back many wonderful memories of not only Bathurst 1970's but sedan racing everywhere before it became the province of purpose built race cars.

    Its hard to have a "race" when no one wants to damage the car. Back in the day of these machines they would have been pushed to the limit because at that time they were just race cars not expensive rare collectables.

      I have to agree with the fact that no one wants to damage their cars. They are becoming more valuable, and parts are that much more difficult to find for some historic/classic race cars. Regarding the 'race' part, I'd disagree. Any driver wants to go out and do the best they can with what they have. They will still push their cars to the max, but simply try to ensure that they don't use anyone else's vehicle as a 'braking component'. Always good to see these vehicles on track.

    Great vid and well done Jason. As a former ipra RX7 racer I can relate to the difficulty dealing with the bigger, but heavier, 'muscle' cars especially in a straight line. That 12a is pulling some serious revs - way more than I would have asked of my 13b.
    The regulation required 4sp is definitely a big handicap especially at a track like Bathurst. But I'm sure it was a great day and many stories were shared over a cold one after the racing in the club rooms.😄👍

    Wow that brought back the memories. I never appreciated the rotaries until I watched them race at Bathurst and they sounded so sweet unlike the blat, blat, blat you got out of the street cars, the rotaries on the mountain were really on song. The old Charger looked great and was doing pretty well. Back in the early eighties I was looking for a car and knocked on the door of a house with an old neglected orange Charger sitting in the driveway but there was no one home so a couple of days later I knocked on the door of a house with an old HK GTS Monaro sitting under a tarp with just the back of the car showing. Silver Mink with a red interior and I drove it home for $700. Unless it was a genuine Bathurst model Falcon, Monaro or Charger they were a dime a dozen back then. Hindsight ehh. I still have a Monaro in the shed, a 2005 VZ in sting red with a red interior.

    I'm surprised how well the little 12A did on Conrod compared to the small blocks. Seems like chassis is the limiting factor, plenty of steering wheel going on.

      @davidburne9477 Před 2 lety +1

      Yep, definitely short of chassis or mechanical grip - Torana all over it over the mountain and Mazda under steering through the Caltex chase. Great driving and a lot of fun I reckon.

    Impressive effort in the Mazda; not so the Torana pulling Brake Checks once in the cutting and twice on the re-start, deserved be "tapped" into the weeds.

      Lower weight makes a big difference in braking or turns. There's a couple of cools race videos, showing that a Mini can follow a Mustang around a track despite only having 1/3 of the engine power.

    That thing is a weapon. This is about as cool as cool gets in my opinion.I have so many questions. How was that Valiant so fast over the top. Why do we need parity in v8 supercars to promote close racing when this shows different power to weight strategies promote close racing too and allows for the under dog for us to back. i could tell a story about a race at Mallala i seen in 1992 between a GT falcon beast and a bombed RX7. They swapped the lead many times and even the Group A teams stopped to watch these two sort out who was best heavy,powerful GT or the light ,stops well and turns RX7. Well the race officials even gave those two a race to themselves at the end of the day as they were 2 each. The big Falcon ended up winning by half a car length and when he entered the pits we formed a line of honour and slapped his rear guards as he rolled past smiling ear to ear. From memory and love if anyone can give more info, it was a guy that owned Ice Cool Radiators and RX was guy that owned Mazpeed called Izzy Izovic. Gives me goosbumps thinking about it. Falcon even had Brodix heads which was wow in 92 and he towed it behing an identical looking GT. Legend.
