  • ONBOARD with Jason Humble's wild 12,000rpm Rotary Mazda RX2 Historic race car! We speak with Jason, take a good look at this car and join him onboard at the 2021 Phillip Island classic festival of motorsport. They say there's no substitute for cubic inches and V8 powered Muscle Cars but this little Mazda and its driver try very hard to challenge that common belief. Mustang, Camaro, XU1 Torana, Falcon GT, Charger, Monaro, you name it, this little Bridgeported naturally aspirated Mazda Rotary will take them all on! Just like the Mazda 787B did at Lemans!
    At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

    That was COOL ! I had one of those in high school and ran green aviation fuel in it with some Marvel Mystery oil, if I recall correctly that is ~134 octane. That puppy was a screamer, it would go 130 mph and still have 3/4" from the floor. I needed new tires, poor thing would shake at those speeds so I never did find out how fast it would go. Out ran the cops cause I had the wrong plates on it one night in town via back roads and alleys. I had good reason back then and beat that car into the ground till the compression gave out and the tires were covered in little threads sticking out all over the sidewalls. I did extreme reckless endangerment driving and never touched a thing. It would do hellacious bat man turns after 80 mph reverse direction vector, the noise, smoke, and solid black marks more complicated than the sign of money $'s were outstanding. Never would have thought they would command so much money now days, I payed $300 when it was ~5 years old. And the seats lay all the way back. Looks a bit squirrely on the track, get some better tires and take that cheating Mustang.

      It is indecently fast. I think it is NOT IN THE SPIRIT of historic racing.
      The R100's and RX2's were early rotaries, and I don't think bridgeporting let alone that "ceramic" technology was ever used back in the early 70's. And 12,000 rpm?? Try about 9,250 instead, and see if it's still a podium car...
      Lovely and quick there were indeed - but I'll be buggered if they ever could run at the front of a field of muscle cars!
      It just ain't right and it spoils the vibe. I want to see those little cars racing - don't get me wrong - but I don't want to see them where they don't belong based on the actual history of the racing prior to several seasons into RX3 racing, and prior to the RX7 cars which ushered in more of those mods.
      What rpm did the 42 and 43 Stuyvesant RX-7's of the Moffat team run? 10,500 and maybe 11,000 in a pinch - and that's 10 or 12 years later than the RX2.
      I take my hat off to the other guys who put up with this caper. The rules are not protecting the history of racing in the early 70's. Isn't that guy embarrassed at all to be rewriting the actual history?

      @@rosskelly8268 I hear you Ross, but we can't unlearn what we already know mate.
      Group N is based on Series Production regs, not Group C.
      Having said that, Ian Tate can build you a 300bhp Red 202 for an XU1 that fully complies with Group N reps, yet only ever got 238bhp out of the same motor per the Group C rulebook back in 73/74.
      Walk around the paddock quizzing the Ford & Charger runners & their numbers are a lot better than what was achieved by their best back then too.
      All Group N cars have their own Achilles heal. In the RX-2, it's the synchro gears. The Holdens? The M21 or, worse still, the 3-speed. Phil Barrow has to rebuild two 'boxes after every meeting!
      The Ford boys will tell you the old faithful Top Loader isn't bulletproof either.

      @rosskelly8268 Před 7 měsíci

      Good response Peter. It's true we can't unlearn all the tricky tweaks that have crept in over the years. I get that 100%. As you say 230hp XU-1's (Bond running SU's backing up Brock on Webers) is now 300 hp if you go to the right engine guy. But all these cars are not benefiting to the extent of adding nearly 3 grand to your redline. And when an RX2 podiums ahead of nearly every muscle car in the field I reckon it's gone skewiff.
      I think I should maybe take a chill pill; but this really bugs me because I watched those races in the 1970's.@@petermurray4061

    • @racingrx2
      @racingrx2 Před 6 měsíci

      Hi Ross Kelly, I am happy to clarify some of your questions and concerns.
      Mazdas had a factory Bridgeport kit from R100 onwards (late 60’s). You could order a Bridgeport set of plates, performance carburettor, sports exhaust, racing oil cooler, 5 speed, lsd and other performance mods for an rx2 - in fact a mate of mine had one of these cars and it came with special housings also which were sand cast performance units that we are not allowed to run.
      Compared to any piston car, our comp ratio is fixed based on factory components (there are no aftermarket rotors available yet), our capacity is fixed also, and our port opening (same as camshaft lift) is also limited whereas the piston cars don’t have this restriction.
      Further, our cars are the only car in the class that has had carburettor chokes per cylinder reduced from factory ie: rx2’s came with a 4 barrel, however if we upgrade the carb we can only use one choke per rotor. V8’s can go from a 4 barrel up to 8 chokes.
      Finally, ceramic coating technologies are used by most competitors be it piston or rotary so no advantage held by us there.
      I also own a Chev in the same category and am doing a motor for it at the moment. The parts and mods available for it compared to the Mazda is ridiculous but hey, spose the uneducated aren’t interested in the facts.

      @@racingrx2 Great reply apart from the insult at the end.
      My point is that the playing field is not level.
      What was the redline in competition in the early 70s? And what sort of crazy gear shift speeds are you able to use to string corners together with no gearchange or 1 shift less than rotaries used to need? I know what a difference that makes from my own racing at Warwick Farm and Oran Park 45 years ago.
      Other cars may well be benefiting from ceramic etc, but why is an RX2 now at the front of a muscle car field?
      This is not how it was. Not even nearly.
      Either your driving talent is up there with Michael Schumacher, or the rules of your class need some small changes so that the historic racing is actually a bit more like it was.
      I've got to hand it to the big car drivers if they are cool with this blatant glitch of history.
      BTW, I love those little cars, and treasure the memory of a road spec R100 just humming up through the gears.

    • @racingrx2
      @racingrx2 Před 6 měsíci

      @@rosskelly8268thanks and the last few words were not specific to you but the broader rotary haters that have questioned our success over the years. I will go on some more about the concerns you put forward.
      1. I am not Michael Schumacher but I and my group of helpers do try very hard with the car and I do drive ok - as such the car is competitive against all comers. We set the car up well, it has great shock absorbers and good power
      2. We made more power at another stage of development but that didn’t make it quicker so we changed the engine power characteristics to make the car faster.
      3. Revs - In comparison, V8’s at Bathurst in the day may have used 5,500rpm or so when a rotary used 8,000rpm. As such, the V8’s now run to 7500 or more if they don’t use the “approved” after market performance blocks. Our rotary revs to 10,500 and 12,000 as needed but we have no rev limit as the parts are manufacturer standard and like the V8’s are not rev limited if so. As such not an unrepresentative limit increase compared to a piston engine. If our v8 guys looked at NASCAR tech, I’m sure they could spin their motors harder than the 8,000rpm or so that they do.
      4. Back in the day torque wasn’t considered in a rotary but we have worked for 15 years to make them work off a corner, and as such, when geared correctly the spread of revs, gearing, power and spread of power means a rotary engine “can” do much more than a poorly utilised big engined car.
      If you watch some of the in car footage you will see how hard we are trying to beat the big cars, but beat them we do. I ask you look a little more into the effort we put in to see why my car and I go so well against the competition.
      Jason

    • @rosskelly8268
      @rosskelly8268 Před 6 měsíci

      Firstly, Merry Christmas Jason, although I see it's just ticked over to Boxing Day.
      These are great replies you have posted - but I think we still need to look at revs.
      Once upon a time in a (then new) CDT Gemini I could out-drag more fancied runners between corners because I stayed in 2nd gear and the James Faneco-built 1600 would pull 8500rpm all day and all night - and never broke!
      They would arrive on top of me, go wide to get around, but I just held my line and watched them fall back when they gear-changed. With my factory tacho PINNED on the stop, I'd mash on the brakes, and then slightly out-corner the bigger cars to stay ahead. Wash, rinse, repeat. It was all done with the flow from the brilliant CDT S2 head and just a single downdraft Weber I needed to use on the stock manifold.
      Nobody probably remembers the Country Dealer Team Geminis.
      But to get back to RX2's Vs muscle cars.... Back in the day in Group C racing the V8's were actually pulling more than 5500rpm; quite a bit more!
      And my theory is that the RX2 is getting a bigger extension of its rev range - even in percentage terms - that the reciprocating engines. And that is changing the way they can attack particularly the shorter tracks. As you say, they pull out of corners better than they used to, and then the right foot just stays on the floor until the next corner.
      That's just my theory. Because I used to do the same seamless pull between certain corners when all the redlines were lower - but I had a relative advantage and played it all I could. For all that I never got anywhere near a podium against the V8s because I would just get royally hosed off on the straight.
      I guess I've still got a chip on my shoulder:)

      @@rosskelly8268 whilst I kind of agree with you in part, one of “the” only advantages relative to a big car is our flexible engine. We have smaller brakes (and smaller than an escort both front and rear), a heavier body in relative terms (nearing a torana more so than an escort), and less freedoms than all other cars in the class let alone the category.
      With regards to our Chev, I would like to think that our Chevy Nova will perform well and I think better than the Mazda given it’s horsepower (nearly double the Mazda), weight (less than 1.5 times the Mazda), brakes (about 70mm diameter bigger on the front), tyres (2 inch wider rim and about 40% wider tyre), unlimited rev limit etc.
      But on the flip side, I’m not suggesting we are operating our little car way better than anyone else in a muscle car, however we have beaten some of the best drivers and cars in the field. We will however never beat the likes of Paul Stubber who is on the mark with a big car. We stand no chance. So read into that what you will and let perspective be relative to us vs “muscle cars”, and us vs Paul Stubber (in another league). We will never beat him so your comment and view stands that a well driven and prepared Mazda should and will never beat a similarly prepared and driven muscle car.
