The #1 mistake most people make isn't not training enough, it's over training. You'll be sore and tired all the time and generally miserable at best- at worst, you'll injure yourself. His best tip? Go to a running store and let them recommend some shoes and be prepared to spend $125 or so. Yeah, it's a lot and it's sucks, but it's well worth it. My last suggestion- keep running as gadget free as possible - phone and ear buds, check. Shoes, check. Some clothes your comfortable in and experimenting with for different weather conditions, and that's about it. Fancy water bottles and belts, compression sleeves, custom orthotics, etc- I only recommend trying that stuff if you think there's a need for it as you gain experiencing with running. I only say this because I've done it and tried it. One of the best parts of the sport of running is the freedom from just about everything- freedom from interruptions, from frustration, from your friends and family, from your job- a chance to just think about nothing and let your body and mind come together in a way few other activities can accomplish. As far as actual race day goes, be prepared to sleep like shit- I don't think I've ever gotten more than 4 hours of sleep. It doesn't matter. Your training and excitement will get you through it, I promise. When the race starts, just let it all go and enjoy the moment.
I went out slow and steady for the first time in a decade… collapsed at mile 4… literally saw stars and before I knew it I was taking an involuntary “nap” in the grass on the side of the road. This is gonna be a long journey to my first marathon 😓😅
Just keep going
@@AlexanderAyling will do! Already feeling better. Epson salt baths and iced all last week. Completed 14 miles total and onto week 2 of 20 from my training program
@@alexm1841 how’s it going so far
1. Avoid the heat. Common mistake is to think that more sweat is giving you a better workout but, if that was true then skipping sleep and purposely dehydrating yourself before run would be productive; it’s obviously not. Run in the early AM or before sunset. Optimize your body; this videos is really good, follow it closely.
2. Consistency and patient is the key. Even if you only get 1% better per week, that is a great accomplishment, and after a year you will see a 52% improvement, which is epic.
@@beescheeseandwineplease889 math left the chat.
1.01 is the improvement over a week, meaning 1.01^52 equals the improvement over a year because a year has 52 weeks. thus you will improve 67.8% over a 1 year.
you cant add and/or subtract percentages because it's relative.
4:23 you obviously did not run enough.
Note to self:
Leafy green, spinach, kale, beetroot juice.
Train hard, Rest hard, active rest.
Good pair of shoes and compression socks.
And don’t forget to stay hydrated :)
AlexTheVagabond thank you 😊
I want to train for the LA marathon next year. I started with 5ks and I ran my first half marathon last September, it was the most difficult/amazing thing I’ve ever accomplished.
You can do it! If you can run a half you can run a whole
I started with 5 miles than 8 miles, 10 miles which i thought was a huge accomplisment. I then enlisted myself in a hapf marathon run and now im training for a marathon!!!!
You can do it!!! Just keep moving :)
can you pleease give me your instagram i just wanna ask you something
It’s been 2 years Did you complete a marathon
Did you do it?
I am doing my second Half-Ironman this year, but next year want to push to a full marathon and hopefully build towards a full Ironman.
Amazing!! I really want to do an Ironman too. Hopefully in 2021. I was thinking about doing it this year but with the wedding and all the trips already lined up training would be a really big challenge
Well i hope you did not lose your motivation in these hard times
Have you ever thought about running a marathon? Let me know in the comment what your thoughts are, what your fears are, and whether or not you're going to take up the challenge in 2020!
I will be running one this December. I’m on a training schedule. Just completed my long run for the week which was 7 miles. Do people take drinks or packs on marathons?
I want to do the Richmond Marathon in 2021! The most I’ve ever run was 9 miles and that was about 6-7 years ago in high school. If the marathon is always in November then I have about 14 months to prepare.
cotopaxipamela I don’t plan on it because at the Richmond, aid stations are every 2 miles.
I am training for a full marathon(virtual at this point) and will be running in Oct’20. My pace hasn’t improved and is at 15min/mile. All I am looking is to complete the marathon without injury and need to have endurance to run for 7 hours. Any suggestions are welcome!
just bought some sauconys at feet fleet today. ive been running in some nikes for about three weeks now i put in 20-25 miles a week but i need to make big changes to my diet
Ran 10 miles in 1:18:45 on the 28th of December trained since August, completed my first half in 1:57:37 this November.
Incredible job!
Ahh I just agreed to a half marathon (and that is huge to me because I do not run.. like ever) but this is perfect! Thanks Alex, super inspiring! ❤️
Thank you Raya!! I’m stoked for you! You can do it :)
If you can run 13.1 miles, you can definitely run 26.2, so you might as well get the big one out of the way!
How did it go?😁
I was fully exhausted in the half of the run so can expect what happened the other half 😢😔😂😂😂😂
Me too!!
I walked the last 9 miles of my first marathon, I intend to run the whole off next one in Lochness 🥵
You got it! Lochness sounds like a great spot for a marathon
@@AlexanderAyling that's what I thought, if your not going to do many make sure there somewhere fantastic! 🏃♂️🐍🌊
You finished it though :)
You can do it!! Build up to where you can run for 2 hrs and you've got it. Go Cuber!!
Hi Cuber Stu. I’m also running the Loch Ness marathon in 2 weeks! Gulp! Best of luck to you.
Ran my first half marathon last month in 90 minutes, Going to do the Hartford marathon in October only a few days after my 40th birthday. Hoping to get under 3:10:00 and to qualify for Boston Marathon.
I did my first 25k (15.5miles) today and in 4 months I want to do my first (half-) marathon race together with my mom who has been running marathons for years. Still unsure what I am going to sign up for, but I am excited! ❤️
Great video! I doing a marathon in April. I agree to all your training tips! It's months away but I'm already so nervous. Thank for making the video! A lot of encouragement!
Hey man, yeah totally training towards a half marathon at the moment. There’s another piece of interesting history about the Marathon. After the Athenians won the battle of Marathon, they found out that Athens was being invaded so the soldiers that were left ran the 25 miles back to Athens in full armor to defend the city of Athens. Pretty crazy what the human body is capable of with the right training. Thanks for the tips man. Great video.
That's crazy! I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing Adam! Good luck with your Marathon!
Hey man, think your facts are mixed up but the true still is still a laugh! Greeks defeated the Persians at Marathon then sent a runner to Athens to tell them. His name was Philippides and once he gave the message to the Athenians he dropped dead haha, so marathons were hard then too.
Just today I was thinking about running a half marathon in April but I wasn’t sure that I can prepare. And on CZcams I saw you made a video about it!Thank you for the tips and the great videos on your channels!
You can do it!!! I hope this video helps spark your desire to make it happen.
I ran my very first half-marathon this weekend and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! After getting my certificate of completion for this first milestone, I am definitely setting my sights on doing a full marathon next month.
I am super excited about this and I found your video incredibly helpful!
Thank you so much for providing the historical background--makes it so much more exciting and epic!--and for sharing footage of your first marathon.
Thank you so much!! And best of wishes on all your upcoming races too!
Congrats Katherine! I’m proud of you! You can do a full marathon for sure! Slow and steady! All the best
Michael Williams Hey! I started training for the marathon about 6 months before the date.
This was so encouraging!! I signed up for my first marathon last night, slated for Sept 4th of this year...I’m really looking forward to the mental and emotional effects this will have on me, the accomplishment alone is going to mean SO much 💫
Best of luck! You can do it just keep moving :)
here as the year ended, how did it go?!
How did it go?
Thank you for this video Alex. It is very much needed- I am running my first marathon for charity next year. Started training slightly less than two months ago and already see a good progress. Good luck!
No problem Anton! Glad the video could help. Keep up the training!
Great tips!! Mindset I've heard is so key. Especially once you hit that halfway point.
It’s so crucial!! You gotta stay positive with the mindset for sure! That’s what gets you across the finish line. Thanks for watching ;)
Who’s here prepping for a marathon in 2022?

Thank you for those tips. I signed up for the San Diego Rock N’ Roll marathon oct 24th. I ran the half marathon in 2019 now that it’s back up and running this will be my first official Full marathon. I also really enjoyed the brief history lesson on marathons that was cool 😎
You’re going to be fine and as an SD local I’ve heard the rock n roll marathon is great
I am training for my first marathon that is set to be in January! I hope it actually happens but this video definitely gives me motivation every time i watch it! Thanks so much for the tips!
Thanks Jay! Makes me happy to hear the video helps. Just keep running. You got this
The first part was actually interesting. I would love to hear more about the history of ultra athletes/running
Doing the Chicago marathon! It’s my first one and I’m so pumped
Congrats! You can do it Martin
Ran a marathon in 2011 without training … done many half marathons without training as well … I am planing to do another one in 12/2021 … I want to do it the right way … thank you for the tips 👍🏼
You got it in the bag then. With training it won’t be as hard on the body
I'll be running a marathon in 2 months, can't wait to run!
Training for a 1/2 right now, hoping to run a full Marathon by the end of the year :) Thanks for the tips!
You got this!
Hey, your friendly Exercise Science college nerd here. Almost have my bachelors and learned a lot about exercise science in the military. You mentioned a common misconception about muscle soreness and that it is caused by lactic acid build up in the muscles and that’s why you should foam roll. This is actually not true and it is caused by something called DOMS (delayed onset muscle syndrome). Lactic acid does build up during exercise but only for a very brief amount of time and then your levels return to normal very quickly. Just thought I’d throw that out there so you’re not misled. However, it is true that foam rolls helps with recovery and promoting the return of oxygenated blood to the muscles. Thanks for sharing your experience though. I’ll be running my first marathon in February myself so thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Cheers Daniel. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a new sub and I really enjoy your content! Very good advice! Looking forward to new videos bud!
Cheers Jake! Have you seen my Mountain Biking from Colorado to Utah series??
That was AWESOME! Sharing this with my running partner. Great tips. We are running our first full marathon at CIM if it doesn’t get cancelled😩 fingers crossed! Thanks, fantastic video
You can do it! And if the actual race gets canceled, consider doing your own!!
Sweet. I just signed up for 2022! How did you do?
Running my first Marathon on Valentine's day 😁😁. Fort Lauderdale, FL. Thanks for the tips and tricks. I'll be remembering these on it.
I love your video!!!
Very inspirational
I'm running the NYC Marathon
Your video definitely helped
Awesome! Enjoy and good luck!
Yes i did sign up on my first marathon. Am excited and afraid too. but as i watched your video, boost my confidence to go through. Thankyou for the inspiration❤️
You can do it!
Great video! I have my first marathon coming up in October 2021. Excited and nervous haha
You got it! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other
This is the kind of motivation I like to see.
I signed up for my first marathon for December 2022. It is the California International.
I used to be a runner back in the military days but I am now 45 and will be 46 on race day. Sucks to put it out 11 months but it is the only legit marathon in my area.
I just did maximal testing at the VA hospital labs - echos, ultrasounds, 7 day telemetry and a gnar 12 lead EKG stress test. Max heart rate certified at 181. No cardiac issues.
I am cleared to boogie and STOKED!!
Hey, me too. Also signed up for CIM 2022 as my first marathon. Good luck in your training!
@@christianbondoc6732 Thank you. I am going to have to donate my fees this year. Just closed my business and moved! Too much going on to train. There is always next year.
I started training for my first marathon and it was cancelled due to COVID. I have maintained my training and will run it on my own! Your tips are very good, however I will say that I have been training in VIVO barefoot shoes and while its more difficult than more comfortable shoes, its very satisfying and really strengthens your feet and form! Also, ice baths baby!
You got this! Keep the training up. Stoked you're going to run it on your own. I'd suggest doing laps that pass by your home and set out some water and snacks outside for you to grab to keep you fueled! Good luck
Such a great topic...and tons of great advice. Thanks so much for this video and the inspiration. Could you share some of your favorite smoothie recipes? Or recommendations for healthy eating in general?
I’ve been thinking about making some
videos about that. Maybe like a what I eat in a day kind of video?
Yeah, that would be great!
I’ve just published a new food/travel series called “A Taste of Travel” hope you check it out
Giving birth in 2 months from now. Planning to run the Disney world marathon January 2021!
Congrats on the upcoming baby and the marathon plans! You can definitely do both! Wishing you all the best.
How did it go?
I’ll be turning 31 later just month, I never really had a desire to do one until lately. Great tips
You got it Chris!
just stumbled across of your video.. after running for 4 straight years post highschol and stopped for a year i think its time for me to get back and reach my goal in training for a marathon!
Yes. You can do it! Make 2023 the year
My biggest advice is to skip the half marathon and just go for the full monty. If you are able to push yourself to run 13.1 miles, you can definitely run 26.2, it is 99% mental. I was in the worst shape of my life (33, pulled hamstring, bad knees) and i ran my first marathon a few months ago. I only went on 10 training runs leading up to the marathon, so i was definitely dieing during the race but i am glad i got the big one out of the way. Next year i will probably run the half
I’d agree there. If you can do a half, you can do the whole thing
My knees ache after 13 miles, should ignore when it starts to burn? Lol i dont struggle with losing my breath or anything its just hurts my knees.
I’m going from only having run 3 5k’s to full Marathon. Everyone thinks I’m crazy. I’m just determined!
Great video, thank you for making it.
Thanks for tuning in and watching Eugene. Hope you check some of my other videos too
This video was so good. I’ve signed up for the London marathon in October 😊 wish me luck
All the best! You got it!
Planning on running a marathon in 3 weeks. Haven’t started training yet, don’t have super long distance history, and will definitely struggle but I know it’ll be a challenge and that’s the appeal for me. It’ll be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done but I know I will do it
Best of luck!!
How’d it go
This video is so inspiring! Thank you so much for making it.
No worries. Thanks for watching Rachel. I hope you decide to go for it!
It was very helpful I learned a lot and quite funny i think I might try those compression socks and have more kale. Thanks for a great videos for being healthier 💯❤💙💥
I jus signed up for my first marathon and I’m excited. I’ve never done a 5k race or 10k race or half marathon. But I’ve ran consistently the past couple months and I’m believing for the best. Deff nervous, excited, and all the feels! 26.2 here I come!! Thank you for the video, encouragement, realness and all the info. Just keep going and running 🏃
You got it. Just keep moving :)
I am running my first marathon in July and I am in the same boat as you! We got this!
@@madisonroussel congrats!! What is your training and dieting looking like?
Thanks, man. Just signed up to a half marathon (21km) it's my first marathon! Again .. appreciate the video!

@@AlexanderAyling painful, but extremely rewarding .. felt so good to finish it .. i had a lot of doubt throughout the race, but just tried to just focus on right step left step to distract myself from the pain
I’m running my first half marathon in March but would one day love to be able to have a go at running a full one
You can do it. Your half marathon will
show you what you’re capable of. Good luck Sophie!

Thank you for the vid! Plan on running my first one in December!
Go for it Michael!
Me too!! Good luck to you Michael!
"That's because running 26.2 miles isn't really all that fun." Lol!😂 Great video from the perspective of a regular person setting a realistic goal to finish a marathon. It has me thinking now about it, but maybe starting out with a 10K run, nothing too extreme. Great practical advice, too
Thank you! A 10k is a good place to start!
LA marathon March 20th. (Currently March 9th) Let’s do this !!🤙
How did it go!
Great advice! Thank you for this video.
No worries! Thanks for watching
Great video Alex ! I have signed up for my forst ever maratjon,Cayman Island Marathon on December. It is going to be tough and Im kinda afraid and nervous thinking about it !
Don’t worry, just run. Train by running a bit more each week. Slow and steady
Just signed up today and the marathon is this Saturday. Im a runner so I already have training. Ran a 10 mile run today aswell in 1:19.26 sec

They are a must now
Running my first Marathon in October! I’m running the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
Amazing stuff Jalen! Stoked for you!! You got it
Great video! I’m running my first marathon (the SF Marathon) in November. Did you wear headphones/listen to music during the race? I’ve heard differing perspectives.
Hey Mel! Congrats on signing up for your first marathon. I personally chose to run without music. There is usually quite a lot happening and I wanted to be able to take it all in and not tune out. That being said I almost never run with music so to each their own
love this, thanks for the video !!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Thank u for sharing ur story - I’m getting ready to run my first marathon
Of course, thank you for watching Angelica. You are gonna do fine. Just keep moving. I've got my first ULTRA Marathon next month, 50KM trail running. Subscribe so you don't miss the video about it. Happy New Year!
My first Marathon: Was only running for fun and without proper training. The night before the big run i was at my friends house for his birthday. We drank some alcohol, and stayed up till 4 am. At 7 am the run started. I haven't been sleeping at all that night, and just arrived after the last runners left the starting area and hopped in. My time was 4:05 hours, and THIS was certainly not healthy. Learned from my mistakes ...
I’m gonna run my first half marathon next april
Great job signing up Jackie. You’re going to be fine :)
Thanks alex it really helps
🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have been training to run a marathon. I want to run the Philadelphia Marathon 2022. I just ran my first 5K race this month. And plan to run a couple more and work my way up to a half.
Awesome! You got it Christina. Just keep running and slowly increase distance. I’d highly suggest getting a good pair of compression socks for helping with muscle repair. Pretty sure I linked my favorite pair in the description. Best of luck!
I always wanted to do a marathon but I only did 5k. This inspired me to go out and do a marathon.
wow great video man! very helpfull! keep up the good work!
Thanks Tibor. Hope you enjoy your marathon!
Beetroot increases Hemoglobin which increases blood which increases stamina.
Doing my first marathon in June in my home city of Cork. I'm fit enough but running hasn't been a strong point but it's something I'm gonna address ik the lead up to the June 4th race day! As ambitious as it's going to sound, I'm aiming for sub 3 hours for the 42 km course but as Goggins always puts it;
"Why train for a half marathon when you cam do a full one?!"
Thanks for the advice bud and I'm buzzing for June 4th!!
Go for it! We're capable of so much more than we think. I've got a 50KM Ultra coming up in a month. I'll share my experiences in a video on my channel once I've done it. Subscribe and stay tuned!
I’ve been running 10 miles a day for the last 4 months and really love running actually, I’m really hoping to do a Marathon in the future!
If you can do 10 you can do a marathon! Just book one and go for it :)

I have run two half marathons, contemplating my first marathon, thanks for the good info.

Great video. So I used to be an avid runner and have ran a Half once. 2020 I tore my meniscus and had to have surgery. As of today I'm still struggling to get past the one mile mark. Maybe I should start with a 5k training plan? Thoughts or advice on a plan for getting back to running?
Try running a mile a day three times per week and work your way up. Also stretch it out every night for a half hour
Thenks for the video ıve about 5 months to my first marathon ı hope ill see the finish 💃🏼
You can do it!

Nice video! I hope to run a marathon when I am older :)

I would like to add that though foam rolling is very important and very helpful....it still hurts like hell so be patient
with yourself.
Hahah totally true. But it's a good hurt right Jessica?
Giving myself 7 yrs ,I will be 60 and want to get under 4 hrs ,but am doing an overall body prog ,strength etc, have been fairly consistent last 4 yrs/ lots of benefits mostly cut out processed food ,mentally I see a joyous future ,being genuinely strong and fit in my pension years /
That’s the plan! Good luck Bob keep going 🙌🏼
Its quite easy actually, whenever you feel like quitting, think about WHOS GONNA CARRY THE BOATS? AND THE LOGS? And keep running
Goggins it!
I’m running one tomorrow. Thanks for the tips. 26.2 🏃♂️

@@AlexanderAyling I did it! I may not have gotten a very fast time, but I made it all 26 miles and 385 yards, so I’m pretty happy about that.

No worries Dave. You thinking about running your first marathon?
Yes, in January of 2021
Super nervous ❤ signed up for the Houston Chevron marathon in 2023. My first one , I only have 60 more days to train and right now my long run is at 10 miles. Praying for the ability to finish , I didn’t realize it’s a timed run😳
You’ll be fine. One foot in front of the other
Great advice. You seem like a cool dude too
Thanks Bobbo 🤙🏼

6:33 When id do my cycling training 1 hour in or after was typically when I felt the need for calories and it helped. You mentioned 10 miles which idk what pace that is for you but I’d assume at 6min fastest being an hour or if slower than later.
Every 6 miles or so I feel like refueling is a good call
Great vid!!! Training for my first Marathon started this past weekend with a 10k. Will be picking up some compression socks and grabbing more beets along the way.
Compression socks are the BEST. It’s like putting your feet in a warm pillow. Also yes on the beets 🤙🏼
Struggle is real hahaha I also did my very first full marathon last Nov. 8, 2020 without proper training @20miles, that's where it hit me bad, all the discomfort started to sink in, jelly legs, blisters, sugar depleting, pain all over...at this moment. I only have my will to carry on, I finished with all my grits hahaha. The reason I cross ur video cause I was searching for 'how to prepare marathon" .
