    The Basque region doesn't just have any old "different" language, it's about as different as a language can get.
    Euskera (as the locals call it) is a language isolate - it has no related tongues and pre-dates the Indo-European languages spoken throughout most of Europe and large parts of Asia, many of which were later spread globally by colonialism.

    • @TapdotWater
      @TapdotWater Před 2 měsíci +20

      I think the most interesting part of Euskera history is the creation of the Souriquois Pidgin Language, which was used by Basque whalers and Native/First Nation folks in the New Brunswick area and used phrases from both Euskera and the native languages, which has to go down as one of the most "out there" language combos

      @nevilleneville6518
      Yeah but also to be fair the verse about sending king Edwards army homewards, was written literally due to the invading English.
      A song from a nation about sending a invading force home or a song about crushing a group of people that is literally supposed to be part of the country.
      If the song sung about crushing the pesky londoners or pesky cornish or pesky northern Irish, it would have been changed long ago due to the offensive nature of it.
      It's not only the words spoken in the songs it's the mentality and attitude behind them.

    The sixth verse of the anthem god save the king used to contain the words, “We will northwards rush, rebellious Scot’s to crush.” So flower of Scotland is fine. It is not proven, but there is a fair chance that the Basque language is the last surviving pre Indo-European language left in Europe.the region is very isolated so the language could have been formed later, still it is related to No known language.

    A lil history for y'all, this was definitely not the first encounter between franks and basques, as gascony/vasconia, the region in France that basques inhabited, became a part of the kingdom of the franks in early 7th century, according to Wikipedia conflict between the kingdom and basque tribes started as early as 580

  • @Braddowski

    FYI Scotland doesn't sing God Save The King for a good reason.
    Today we only sing the first 2 verses at most but God Save the King is actually about 6 verses long and one of them has the lines 'May he sedition crush/And like a torrent rush/ Rebellious Scots to crush/ God Save the King". So you could say England was petty for making the Scots sing an anthem about their own demise.
    Also, England doesn't always use God Save the King. In Cricket and at the Commonwealth Games, England uses 'Jerusalem' which I think is a better anthem.

    • @scpjack7856
      @scpjack7856 Před 2 měsíci +3

      Honestly England uses its worst patriotic song for sporting events. Jerusalem and I Vow to Thee My Country are two of the most stirring pieces of music ever written.

    Scotland unified in 843.
    England... Alfred is sometimes considered the first King (886) but Athelstan was the first to rule all of it (927).
    So this battle predates either of those, nevermind the USA or Columbus.

  • @Thatguyinyourclass
    @Thatguyinyourclass Před 2 měsíci +2

    It's probably supposed to say "Basques rising over the mountains." I'm assuming the Tifo is in the Basque language. I believe that vascones means Basque people. But considering that the language isn't related to any Indo-European language. Basically it survived the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Spanish attempts to assimilate the peoples. The Kingdom of Navarre was for a time an independent Basque kingdom.
    Also, technically the Roman Empire ended in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. Yes, the West fell in 476 CE, but the East lasted another 1000 years. Byzantium is not a different empire than Rome, it's a continuation of it.
    Also, look up the "Ballad of Roland" the battle is in it.
    Also, while Charlemagne was Frankish his capital was in Aachen which is in modern day Germany. So he was technically not from Northern France

France still controls part of Euskal Herria, and until independence happens, they wont be quiet. That goes for Corsica too.
