Zealand geeking out over history stuff is peak Zealand. Love it.
In 12,000 odd years time we will have Inter Miami doing a Tifo praising Zealand’s famous marathon win and his love of chocolate turtles
The Basque region doesn't just have any old "different" language, it's about as different as a language can get.
Euskera (as the locals call it) is a language isolate - it has no related tongues and pre-dates the Indo-European languages spoken throughout most of Europe and large parts of Asia, many of which were later spread globally by colonialism.
I think the most interesting part of Euskera history is the creation of the Souriquois Pidgin Language, which was used by Basque whalers and Native/First Nation folks in the New Brunswick area and used phrases from both Euskera and the native languages, which has to go down as one of the most "out there" language combos
Both these replies are the coolest things I've read on CZcams in ages. I just be getting old lol. Thanks for the knowledge.
There was also the Basque-Icelandic pidgin!
Google traduction messed up, it's not 'the baskets" it's "the Basque people"
You beat me to it 😂
Speaking as an English person, Flower of Scotland is an absolute banger. I went to see Scotland play France at rugby and hearing Flower of Scotland and La Marseillaise back-to-back was electrifying.
History Major - Check
Lives in North America - Check
Cheers for Sunderland AFC - Check
Yeah I think I might like this Zealand guy :D
I remember a tifo from Beitar Jerusalem showing Moses opening the Red Sea and the message "anything is possible". But it wasn't a petty move, they were just inspiring their players and themselves.
The message of flower of scotland is actually very much "and we'll do it again, ya *****"
Was about to comment as an England fan, if you go far enough down into God Save the King there’s a verse about crushing Scots, so fair enough.
Pssst…it’s Zealandism, you can curse uncensored!
Considering it's Scotland, I assume the censored word is "cunt" 😂
@@scpjack7856To be fair, that verse about "rebellious Scots to crush" was written as an army of Scottish rebels was literally marching on London
@nevilleneville6518
Yeah but also to be fair the verse about sending king Edwards army homewards, was written literally due to the invading English.
A song from a nation about sending a invading force home or a song about crushing a group of people that is literally supposed to be part of the country.
If the song sung about crushing the pesky londoners or pesky cornish or pesky northern Irish, it would have been changed long ago due to the offensive nature of it.
It's not only the words spoken in the songs it's the mentality and attitude behind them.
Best part of it is that most of the PSG fans aren't really french to know or care about this reference.
Not enough chocolate turtles
"Vascones" here means "Basques" (Spanish: vascos) rather than "baskets". The Basques are coming over the mountain, creatively rendered.
In fairness that is a very famous battle due to the legends regarding Roland
Little things like this make this channel one of my must-watch channels every day.
The sixth verse of the anthem god save the king used to contain the words, “We will northwards rush, rebellious Scot’s to crush.” So flower of Scotland is fine. It is not proven, but there is a fair chance that the Basque language is the last surviving pre Indo-European language left in Europe.the region is very isolated so the language could have been formed later, still it is related to No known language.
Actually a pretty famous battle, it was the inspiration of the "Ballad of Roland"
It was forgotten until the 1970s when Billy Joel started writing ballads on Rolands.
This battle might be relatively unknown but it it's kinda famous in France because of the Chanson de Roland, an 11th century epic poem about this event.
"You don't understand bro. You had to be there"
rangers and celtic are pretty specific with who they'll take in as well, I live in Northern Ireland and if you go into certain parts of our capital with a rangers or celtic shirt you're speed running your own death
A lil history for y'all, this was definitely not the first encounter between franks and basques, as gascony/vasconia, the region in France that basques inhabited, became a part of the kingdom of the franks in early 7th century, according to Wikipedia conflict between the kingdom and basque tribes started as early as 580
That's not the first time I've been advised to watch my rear around Spanish men.
FYI Scotland doesn't sing God Save The King for a good reason.
Today we only sing the first 2 verses at most but God Save the King is actually about 6 verses long and one of them has the lines 'May he sedition crush/And like a torrent rush/ Rebellious Scots to crush/ God Save the King". So you could say England was petty for making the Scots sing an anthem about their own demise.
Also, England doesn't always use God Save the King. In Cricket and at the Commonwealth Games, England uses 'Jerusalem' which I think is a better anthem.
Honestly England uses its worst patriotic song for sporting events. Jerusalem and I Vow to Thee My Country are two of the most stirring pieces of music ever written.
It’s like the US in a way. We all know “America the Beautiful” is clear.
Yeah, but that verse about crushing Scottish rebels was written as an army of Scottish rebels was marching on London, so...
This is my favourite thing that has ever happened
5:37 - For further comparison...
Scotland unified in 843.
England... Alfred is sometimes considered the first King (886) but Athelstan was the first to rule all of it (927).
So this battle predates either of those, nevermind the USA or Columbus.
respect the Basques
Love the shirt you are wearing! The Thames series were amazing.
*The Roman Empire ended nearly 700 years after the battle
Good man
I immedaitely said "No it didnt" when Zea said the roman empire has ended 300 years before lol
This remembers me about a tifo my team had depicting the raiding of the spanish treasure fleet in the 17th century when playing against sevilla
Vascones is almost certainly intended to be Basques, not baskets
It's probably supposed to say "Basques rising over the mountains." I'm assuming the Tifo is in the Basque language. I believe that vascones means Basque people. But considering that the language isn't related to any Indo-European language. Basically it survived the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Spanish attempts to assimilate the peoples. The Kingdom of Navarre was for a time an independent Basque kingdom.
Also, technically the Roman Empire ended in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. Yes, the West fell in 476 CE, but the East lasted another 1000 years. Byzantium is not a different empire than Rome, it's a continuation of it.
Also, look up the "Ballad of Roland" the battle is in it.
Also, while Charlemagne was Frankish his capital was in Aachen which is in modern day Germany. So he was technically not from Northern France
I‘m almost 100% certain that none of the PSG fans got the message😂
PSG: "Too soon"
Bruh why is he uploading at this time 😭😭 get some rest man
What’s the “AFC Thames” on that jersey?
Dr Benjy FM save
It is a fictional team that FM content creater Doctor Benjy (you might have heard about him) did a save with 2-3 FMs ago and had kits created.
@@thargoff Ahhhh
Talking of Flower of Scotland I am pretty sure in the extended version of GSTK it slams the Scots. Think it talks about going up to Scotland and crushing them.
I LOVE THIS
God Save the King has a verse about crushing the Scots
i know these aren’t getting many likes at the moment, but i love these videos so please don’t stop
🤓actually it was Leif Eriksson who "discovered" America almost 500 years before Columbus😄😄
I wonder if instead of baskets, is basques...
Dude, that's an awesome.
Waiting for my ck3 FM cross-over content
Is Mbappe fast enough to outrun the Basque tribes?
Love such cultural passion! Much respect.
Tho not history related I always thought the Orlando city walking dead tifo against Atlanta was top tier petty
Associating the Franks with France is kinda wrong though. The Franks were a Germanic tribe ruling over most of Western Europe, they aren’t even the ancestors of the French, they were just the rulers for a small period of time
Agreed. Lots of assumptions of continuity happen when pseudo history comes into the picture.
Not accusing Z of this, I'm sure he's aware of that. Its more a commnet on the fans acting like both the modern Basques and post (many) revolutions French republic have all that much in common with these historical analogies is a dubious proposition.
I mean, even the concept of a nation state is a very recent thing.
6:01 Well hang on now slow down their Zealand. As a history major you should know the Byzantine Empire still claimed to be Rome and lasted until the mid 15th century.
Western vs Eastern Roman Empire... And Hispania belonged to the Western part, so, the Eastern one is not really relevant...
No, the Roman Empire ended in 1453
gora euskal herria
Interesting
You can say it happened over a thousand years ago, but what didn't happen a thousand years ago is Basque independence from larger European powers, in fact that is still to happen. France still controls part of Euskal Herria, and until independence happens, they wont be quiet. That goes for Corsica too.
ETA 🤝FLNC
History major: the Roman Empire ended in 476
The Roman Empire, with its capital in Constantinople, standing for another 1000 years: dude wtf
Western vs Eastern Roman Empire, you know very well what was meant... And Hispania belonged to the Western part, so, the Eastern one is not really relevant...
“Baskets” is supposed to be “basques” in the translation
you're a history major and didn't know about the battle of Roncevaux?
6:01 put some respect on eastern rome / byzantium
My dear american, you must be new here :P If this impresses you you should have seen the huge mock forrest dortmund fans put in front of the stadium entrance when playing against as roma....yes there was a waysign saying "to teuteburg"
dont see anything abt running so, go run
First and love the videos keep it up!
uhm ackshually roman empire ended in 1453 🤓
Western vs Eastern Roman Empire... And Hispania belonged to the Western part, so, the Eastern one is not really relevant...
Leif Erikson was the first European to discover America he did it in 1006
I became a huge fan of Athletic Bilbao because of Football Manager like 5-ish years ago!
Also I’m doing a Challenge getting commented by big football CZcamsrs can you pls comment
I dont think its petty and if you just disregard history because it happened a thousand years ago then shame on you
Pretty sure the Vascones in the latin phrase refers to that tribe. They are said to have preceded the modern Basques.
