When I was younger, I watched the shit outta this movie! It's easily one of my childhood favorites. It actually did teach me a few things, a few times, and it served to give me a sense of confidence that I didn't have. The movie proved that with wisdom, heart, resourcefulness, and courage you could weasel your way out of quite a few sticky situations.
SAME, and AGREED!!!
Same here, and even as a n adult I still love this. I do understand people's problems with it like the unfocused story but that never bothered me. It's honestly one of my top 20 Disney movies at least.
A 6/10, okay that's your opinion. I give this movie a 7/10, sure it's not Disney's greatest movie, but it's still a good, entertaining film.
Same!!!
10/10 best animated movie ever.
I'd give it an 8/10. It's one of my favorites and the good points seem to outweigh the bad points.
This movie probably uses more recycled animation than any other movie. Watch closely and you can spot a lot of repeated movement and, in the case of Arthur, is the problem of having three voice actors. Granted, there was no time to find another actor and rerecord the lines but, no matter how much they try to imitate each other, you're going to notice a change in voice.
I always felt sad for that girl squirrel. :(
I just said that XD
A better love story than Twilight.
Thomas S Me too but hopefully she got over it and moved on after watching Frozen ;)
Mattheos Clemence yes she "let it go"
Well, it's the classical teenage girl who falls in lov with someone, gets heartbroken when the guy is not interested in you or are in love with someone else, gets overwhelmingly sad and cries their eyes out but eventually gets over it and moves on with life, most likely to find their Knight in shining armor and possibly marries her n the future (or kiss may frogs before finding the the husband which is the most likely thing that happens).
I remembering really liking this movie when I was a kid.
We all did.
Same here
It's funny, while I liked almost every animated film I saw in my youth, I found myself watching this one a lot just because of the wizard duel. I always sat through the whole thing, but the wizard duel was the only scene that I remembered. I even forgot the title of the film for years.
When i was a kid I LOVE this movie ,today it's Meh.
i watched it at least 20 times.
i think thats the reason for my fondness to medieval media
"Most powerful wizard in the world" Merlin, Dumbledore or Gandalf?!
Merumbledalf
MetroidSigma Yeah that makes sense
They're all so similar, it's a bit sad to me actually... because I love all three of them dearly and see them as individual, unique characters rather than just common trope, but if you told me to try and explain in what ways they're all different from each other...
I mean I guess Gandalf doesn't dress eccentric, and Dumbledore isn't as clumsy as Merlin...
ooh
@Peace Sells, But Who's Buying? hah
You know, I think Taran from “The Black Cauldron” has a similar puberty problem in his voice where the voice actor’s voice changes from being from a young teen to an older teenager or young adult. At least Taran’s voice stayed more consistent in that film than Wart’s in this movie.
thats 3
6/10? Are you serius? This movie is a masterpiece, it's one of the best Disney animated movies of all time.
People are alowed to have opinions
Tomboyish Marsupial One of the worst
Far from it, watch it without the nostalgia googles and it's no more than a 5 or 6 out of 10. But I guess to each his own, right?
Yes the best Disney film- a masterpiece.
Keep opinions in mind
I rewatched this film recently. I think a more accurate title should be How Merlin Traumatized Arthur. First let's turn him into a fish and also get eaten. next let's turn him into a squirrel and almost get eaten and have sex with a squirrel. and third let's turn him into a sparrow and almost eaten not once but twice. I think Arthur was suppressing memories as King
I'm hoping to see Mad Madam Mim in Kingdom Hearts 3 as a boss battle.
Fun fact: the animatronic extras featured in Splash Mountain [mainly the avian characters] were based on concept art from the scrapped Chanticleer film.
...but eventually, an animated film based on Chanticleer would get made. And it was called...Rock-a-Doodle.
*cue waa-waa trumpet*
Despite the odd transitions and the odd educational moments. I still really love this movie.
It still stands as one of my favorite movies based on Arthurian lore
I've always liked that female squirrel. I think it'd be nifty if her name turned out to be Guinevere.
Well i thought it was pretty pointless
nikosafer1 I always thought she was cute and wished they could stay a couple because I'm romantic like that.
Cherishd by all
the squirrel scene wasn't about romance. the female squirrel wanted a mate. arthur wasn't interested. iit was always one way romance. and kind of a tragic one for the poor squirrel. it'd be the same to me if a girl asked arthur out and he turned her down. i guess artur might too young to be interested in girls that way. he probably met guienevere eventually.
theres that ending again
Personally, I like the movie and think it's alright. What I like is how it takes a break from the three-act story structure, instead being more relaxed and just having Arthur learn. The mini-adventures are fun and simple, which I like. Maybe I would have loved it if they went with a more actual King Arthur story, but it's fine in my eyes.
i do like the film but at times it felt more like a tv series than a movie with its fragmented story parts. maybe it'd have been more successful if they'd turned it into a disney tv series.
Are you excited for the live action remake with the writer of game of thrones?
didn't know they were making one. and idk if i'll be excited. most remakes/sequels disney makes are pretty bad with some exceptions. at this point i wish they would start making new stories. not keep doing remakes and sequels.
+Mike0908 This year we have Zootopia and Moana.
yeah we have some new stuff which is good. but the number of remakes lately doesn't sound good. as like sequels some are going to be great, some okay, and some awful. lol
Mike0908
Believe it or not, most critics like the new Ghostbusters.
Even if Madam Mim is "the villian" of the movie it is Sir Ector who is the main antagonist since he has the most screen time. While not being a directly bad guy but an overly strict father-figure (also he is the foster-father of Wart), he is in many ways Wart's "enemy". He favors his son Kay over Wart, as he sees Kay becoming a Knight (and hopes or becoming The King of England thus himself becoming a royality) while he treats Wart almost like a slave in a Cinderella-esque fashion (except he doesn't completely mistreating Wart psychologically with keep piling up the amount of household works except giving him extra work as punishment for failing to follow orders or being late for his duties), he fears and belittles Merlin and his magic and wisdom (being the practical man and very primative thinking of the medievial man, as well as suspious of his magic, thinking him as being a warlock that would kill or take control over regular folk like medevil people taught of witches) and scolds Wart for regarding Merlin's lessons over his duties as a page. Ector does have a heart for Wart deep down as he is worried at the start when Wart is late unlike Kay who doesn't care, as well as scolding his son for not taking responsibiity at keeping Wart safe and letting him run into the Woods, abandoning him. Also later in the film he makes Wart a squire for Kay (the best he can become since non-noble people can't become knights) and go with Kay and Ector to the the Great tournament on New Year's Eve, on the condition that he does his duties as a page. While he does take away the squire duty from Wart when he doesn't back off from backing up Merlin, he gives the squire title back due to the new squire got sick with the mumps. Finally after Wart does become King after pulling The Sword out the Stone, he does redeem himself by begging for Wartfor forgivnes for the mistreatments (partly due to the fact that Wart might punish him for what he done to him even if Wart doesn't seem to d such) and tells Kay to bow for his king, which he does somewhat begrudgingly and reluctantly.
You'd think Merlin would turn the girl squirrel into a human
I would NOT dislike that.
Well it is a wild animal and he wouldn’t want to mess with nature
If you read any of the stories of the Once and Future King novel, The Sword and The Stone is kind of a learning type of story. And considering the success of Zootopia. Maybe they could bring up the old drawings of the Chanticleer project and possibly do that one.
Great review! You really nailed some of the info regarding the animation, songs and the characters. There's just a couple things story wise that I feel were left out: I'll explain.
It's important to realize that this movie is condensing a very epic and in some ways a very adult legend. Trying to retell the story of King Arthur in a way that children would understand is hard. Although you are correct in that Wart is rather forgettable as a character, however the falling out between Merlin and Arthur is an big plot point. After being his mentor, Merlin just abandons his pupil leaving Wart to innocently wander into his destined role as king. It wasn't Merlin that assisted him with this, Wart became King Arthur on his own.
Now saying that Wart 'learned nothing' at the end is a bit harsh. The learning actually came before the end, after his three transformations, squirrel (Earth) fish (water) and bird (air) and after the battle with Mim where Wart realizes 'Knowledge is the real power.' Mim had supreme magic but no intelligence, and Merlin's knowledge of disease and medicine is what won the battle.
Sir Ector, Wart's foster father, is portrayed as favoring his biological son Kay over Wart. Kay is raised to become a knight, while Wart is the lowly servant and squire. The conflict deepens when Wart stands up to them for Merlin's sake , and finally both Sir Ector and Kay are humbled when they realize they have been raising, and mistreating, a young king.
Ok, the bird and fish scenes are kind of educational filler, although I thought the squirrel part was interesting. In the legend, both Merlin and Arthur are essentially undone by their respective love interests.
Oh and lastly the movie completely failed to explain how Merlin knew so much. Merlin, the legend explains, does not age. He youth-ens. Essentially Merlin was born in the future and lives backwards, a rather mind boggling concept that got completely ignored. This is how he knew the future contraptions like trains and planes, knowledge of medicine and geography as well as who King Arthur would become in the first place.
But in any case, good job Animat! Great review! And a classic movie.
Can we all hope that when Disney starts casting for the live action remake, Merlin will be played by Christopher Lloyd and Archimedes should be played by Michael J. Fox?
It's not their most refined work, but still it's an excelent movie, one of my all-time favorites. What I love about these old classics is the humour. A humour that is completely vanished nowadays. The facial expressions were hilarious. The part with the crumbling tower is so funny to me, I love how Merlin gets all grumpy, covering the holes with umbrellas and Archimede's house filled with water. It's one of Disney's funniest movies in my opinion. Funny without being stupid, it has its serious bits and it looks gorgeous. It is one of their bests. I also love the intro song.
I wonder if the movie that was originally going to be, the one with a rooster, became Robin Hood and later Rock-A-Doodle?
Oh yeah because don bluth worked at Disney wile Walt was alive
Chantaclair eventually became Rock-a-Doodle.
The way I see it, the way they stuffed up a few parts of Sword in the Stone helped Disney company to make improvements with The Jungle Book.
The voice of Arthur changing between the years of voice acting on this film gave Disney company a strong idea for making voice actors younger when starting the recording with Mowgli when doing the Jungle Book.
A deeply flawed film but still entertaining if you are a younger Disney fan.
It needs a sequel.
what's funny is I remember in a vhs of Disney sing-along songs they had "that's what makes the world go round" "and "higitus figitus" on it
When I saw this movie it was the first time I heard about King Arthur. So I didn't have any expectations.
This is the movie I put on in the background when I’m sad. Arthur is such a sweet little character, Merlin is my absolute favourite character ever and the Madame Mim scene is a classic for me!
Not a fantastic film , but it’s my feel good movie :3 Every scene with Merlin (and his sassy owl!) brightens my mood! It reminds me most of the 60’s Winnie the Pooh cartoons. Also childhood faves!
Archimedes mad madam mim and the fat squirrel had me dying of laughter when I was younger
I always felt bad for the girl squirrel :(
Fun fact, according to Rotten Tomatoes, Star Wars the Clone Wars is the lowest rated Star Wars property that was put in theaters with a whopping 18 percent rating with an average score of 4.2. Joy.
9:59 with 1.5X speed is hilarious.
but did anybody notice that The Sword in the Stone that The stone isn't stone anymore but is an anvil now.
The Star Wars: Clone Wars animated movie is next, huh? Oh boy...
Yeah, I've only seen the later seasons of the show and the better episodes of the earlier seasons based on fan input.
The Show's great, but the movie is decent. And hey, Star wars is apart of Disney, so why not?
It is the movie,I am sure of it,he would not do the serise unless someone on patreon sent him the request.
That movie makes the prequels look like Return of the Jedi
It is now but not when the clone wars cartoon and cgi movie was made
Don't worry, Mat. Your remake of the Disney animation lookback includes that.
Merlin is basically dumbledore, appearancewise and personality wise
I remember watching this when I was a kid. I grew up in the 80s, but my aunt showed this to me and my brother and we fell in love with it. What an awesome movie
There's nothing more mood changing than a fun and mostly unique animated adaptation of the King Arthur story. Another informative and interesting video. Keep it up!
How about The Fox and the Hound?
Oh boy have i been waiting for u to tackle clone wars for sometime. personally i dont think it would have been that bad had this came to theaters. its obviously a 4 part pilot that just got shoehorned into theaters because lucas simply said "we've got to have money"
the best part of the film is Archimedes laughing his ass off at the failed attempt of Merline showing the Wright Brothers' flying plane
Kay is technically his foster brother.
This is another Disney favorite of mine, and I had read the original "Sword in the Stone" book
To be honest, if this movie were just another King Arthur epic adventure I think people would’ve been more bored and indifferent than they already are. I liked how the story delves into the philosophy of what it is to be a good king and on top of that being a good movie with lots of real life lessons to be learned for kids.
Chanticleer would make a great sequel to Zootopia - a city made entirely of birds!
Does anyone else notice that the music that plays when AniMat is talking about the characters is the opening music from "The Jungle Book"?
Yes it was originally gonna be in the sword in the stone
Why is it called sword in the stone? if the sword is in a anvil? haha
Because that’s how it is in the original Arthurian romances
Should have just called it Excaliber.
It does have some of the most unique aspects of any Disney film. For one, it is the most laid back of the Disney Animated films and has a more philosophical feel than any conventional adventure. It is a character journey that uses brains rather than physical force to win the day. Also, the character designs are among the best of any Disney film, this is mainly because Milt Kahl, the best of the Disney character designers and animators, was given the task to design every single character in the film (they usually spread the wealth in the other films). But every character designed here is all Milt. Also, the voices actors here are all television actors instead of radio personalities or leading Hollywood types, which gives the film an almost television look. The film doesn't scream theatrical or big, but that is what makes it unique. Lastly, it is the only Disney animated film to have only one writer and one director. Bill Peet did the story all by himself, and Wolfgang Reitherman directed it all by himself. Lastly, the Archimedes character is among the most underrated Disney characters ever. I like that he is always a battle of wits between Merlin and himself and he feels he is the more superior mind. And yet, despite him not liking Wart at first, he eventually becomes fond of him after finding out what a kind listener the boy is which happens in the flying scene and the two begin a huge bond. This also makes him the character that goes through the most growth and has the best character arc in the story. After that moment, he sticks by Wart for the rest of the film.
Thanks for doing this review!
It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Glad I own it.
I thought this movie was good :( I like it.
That’s what IM sayin
When I was a kid I always had a concept for a sequel to this. Arther has to go find a place to set up Camelot, or go on a ritual quest to prove he’s a king, a right of passage of sorts. And on his way he meets Lancelot and Guinevere, the movie would be setting up the friendship between the three (and for fans of the legends of Arther the future tragedy) and they’d go through a forest like in Warner Bros’s Quest For Camelot. That’s all I got, it was a concept I kept thinking of
Ah yes. Sword in the Stone is definitely one of those movies that we enjoyed as kids, but as we grow up, we see how dated it is. Nostalgia is quite a powerful thing, indeed! I mean, I had fond memories of it, but then again, I could watch Disney's Robin Hood a Hundred times til the Day I die!
Anywho, Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie. Up with the 2007 TMNT CGI movie, movies that should've went Direct-to-Video or TV movie instead of the big screen! Weird thing for the mid to late 2000s
Alright, we're getting episode 0 of the CG Star Wars the Clone Wars cartoon.
When I was little in my childhood, I always watch the sword in the stone over and over again and it just happened to be my mother's favorite Disney movie.
I think this is one of disneys most underrated movies I'd give it 8/10
This is one of my favorite disney movie I saw when I was little.
I thought The Jungle Book was the last animated movie that Walt Disney was involved in, before his death? I think they mentioned it in "the making of" segment after the movie.
I think he meant released before his death. The Jungle Book was technically the last one he worked on, but it wasn't released until after his death.
Another of this films strengths is its voice talets (if you exclude the 3 voiced Wart) You had Archamedes voiced by Junius Matthews, the same guy who did Rabbits voice in Winnie the Pooh shorts from that time period. You had Sabastian Cabot who did the voice of Ector (Wart's Foster Father) who was the Narrator of the Winnie the Pooh shorts as well as Bagheera in Jungle Book, then their is Martha Wenworth who voiced Madam Mim along with Nana in 101 Dalmatians, and funny enough, the two voice actors who did Wart who share the last names as Reitherman are the directors sons, and one of them would end up voicing Mowgli in Jungle Book and Christopher Robin in the first Winnie the Pooh short, The Honey Tree
Great review! Oh man. May God have mercy on your soul, Lucas personally hated that one
I always kinda liked the sketchy look of the 60's era xerox movies. I think of it as a style choice.
bh5496 Don Bluth worked on this movie. He’s uncredited but you can tell.
The music played when Animat talks about the characters sounds like music from The Jungle Book
Yh, I noticed that, as well. It's the opening overture to The Jungle Book
To be fair, he was a boy going through puberty. Its a coming of age where the weak boy buckles down (pulling double duty to being a page and to Merlins techings) to take responsibility and become king.
whats your thoughts on star wars animated shows likes rebels or clone wars? i feel there some of the best animation we have on tv
This is a childhood classic to me.
I think it's the funniest Disney movie alongside The Jungle Book, personally.
I absolutely adore this movie.
Merlin might be one of the more popular characters in Disney history, as he appear in various Disney related stuff, like the Kingdom Hearts games, The Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive adventure game, Disney Infinity 3.0's Toybox Takeover expansion game, and the Disney Magic Kingdoms app game, Madam Mim on the other hand do appear as a boss in World of Illusion for the Sega Genesis.
video idea or question, what are your favorite Disney films that never got made?
This Disney film is one from my early childhood.
Bill peet also did the screenplay for 101 Dalmatians and the original dark screenplay of the jungle book
It's Star Wars: The Clone Wars, isn't it?
Or is it the Micro Series...?
Didn't he do that pilot film already or was I watching someone else reviewing Star Wars: The Clone Wars...?
Is that The Jungle Book overture I hear?
>sees the video pop up
>scream a loud "HOLY SHIT"
This may be one of the first animated movie I ever saw.
OMG! this video was posted on my sister's birthday!
Sword in the Stone is my favorite Disney Film.
Double edged sword-nice pun
Chanticleer? That reminds me, the name of a rooster from Disney(which the name got scrapped from this) just before it named from a different company, a Don Bluth animated film Rock-a-doodle, 1991.
As a KH fan, all I can think of is: "Hey look, that one guy in Hollow Bastion!"
THE CLONE WARS!!!!!! My guilty pleasure Star Wars flick!
I gave this a watch for the first time a couple of years ago. I seem to remember falling asleep or wanting to fall asleep through most of it. I think I'll check it out one more time, but I know I'll be going into something that's nowhere near as great as the majority of Disney's other movies.
Previous Classic Review: czcams.com/video/QaDHtbdNz1s/video.html
Next Classic Review: czcams.com/video/DtH7pPOjLfs/video.html
Honestly nowadays I see this film as a harmless movie. It's nowhere as bad as Chicken Little, Mars Needs Moms, or Home on the Range.
Random thought: why do I wish that Disney made an adaptation of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" in their Renaissance period? They could've used songs by Scott Joplin, the Sherman Bros and Gershwin himself to enrich the musical diversity of this story.
This is one of the movies that really needs a sequel
This was the first Disney animated-feature I saw as a child in a theater, so I've always recalled it fondly in that vein. Seen today, I especially like its medieval-atmosphere. Putting other technical-points aside, I think this film actually is the flat-out funniest of the animated-features, after, that is, "Alice in Wonderland". The latter is a fast-paced, free-wheeling, phantasmagoria of hilarious-scenes & characters, an astounding-exercise in visual-imagination. "Sword", equally, is fast-moving & delightfully-funny, unencumbered, as with "Alice", by heavy, emotional-themes or images. Yes, you can say that "Sword", perhaps, emphasizes slapstick but by this time in the 60's, it probably was the right route-to-go. You'll notice that its successor "The Jungle Book" took a similar-approach. The latter is very-funny, too, without much gravitas but I think "Sword" actually is funnier-overall, though "Book" is quite-delightful by itself. It would seem that Disney by this point in the decade decided to forego classically-structured, timeless-stories with deep emotional themes, along-with ultra-lush artistry, in the interest of just pure-fun. The 60's probably necessitated that. You have to realize, too, that children's-interests change from decade-to-decade, due to various other influences, whether from TV, movies, the schoolyard, exposure to more-futuristic & exciting science-fiction, i.e., the developing "Space Age", or society in-general. And Disney always was attuned to the times in terms of what would sell. So I think it's unfair to say that "Sword" is Disney-light or that it's far from a classic. The film may not belong in the studio's canon of unforgettable-classics but it's entertaining in ways the so-called classics can't-match, as great as those classics are. "Sword" simply makes-the-most of a medieval-setting, produced for early but rapidly-changing 1960's-audiences, with emphasis on superb-animation in the service of some very-funny scenes & glittering special-effects. One final, common-complaint is that neither "Sword", "Alice", nor "Jungle Book" are memorable. Once viewed, they can be dismissed & forgotten, unlike the stunning "canon-classics", which have real sticking-power. Well, who says they have to be? They provide great, temporary-entertainment all these years later---and just-remember the changing-era in which they were made!
This is one of my favorite Disney films.
Looking forward to the Clone Wars review!
Xerox wasn't used to colour the the animation, but to copy the original animators pencil drawings to celluloid cells specifically to preserve those rough, sketchy features of lines, which makes it actually glorious, as oppose to those polished, personality less, sterile digitalised lines in lion king.
Animat, can you review Felidae? :D
The weakest Disney Golden Age animated movie.
Silver Age
Also, Mim survives. They kinda fudged the story there. Merlin-germ was a fatal disease in the book, almost instantly.
Have you ever reviewed Interstalla 5555, it's basically the yellow submarine, but with daft punk, check it out though it's pretty good (in my opinion)
Remember seeing this movie as a kid. The only parts that I look at fondly are the squirrel scene and when Merlin fights Mim.
And then when Merlin was like "Blow me to Bermuda!" and actually did since that was too funny.
And all those have to do with Merlin, so take him out of the movie and it could've been MUCH worse.
story 5/10
animation 10/10
character 5/10
songs 7/10
TOTAL 6/10
This was my favorite movie as a kid. Watched it too many times!
Legend of The Neverbeast Next And To The DVD Menu Theme For The Beginning
I love this movie!
hello there. i love your content and i want to know if you could add heavymetal to the animation hat. it's one of my favorite movies of all time. it's probably going to be heavily censored though. but the sound track kicks assistance though.
Kane and sir Edgar are not Worts family, he is there ward.
My two faves as a young boy were sword in the Stone and Rescuers Down Under.
According to James Rolfe's Top 30 Favorite Films list, The Sword in the Stone is not only his favorite animated Disney movie but his favorite animated movie in general.
