    I think one of the reasons it flopped was because at the same time Disney released Tarzan. I remember because when I was little me and my dad wanted to see Tarzan but it sold out so we settled for Iron Giant and ever since we both have been huge Brad Bird fans. +mattwo7 It's not ALL computer. it's still hand drawn for a big part, the rough drafts for example.

    • @mattwo7
      @mattwo7 Před 9 lety

      Robin art•15• Hand drawn...on a computer. You really don't understand how it works at all do you? It's called a "tablet computer". Sure, maybe some concept art and storyboarding is done with physical media, but the final product is done entirely with computers. The first tablet computer directed towards consumers. This was the same year The Little Mermaid was released. The Little Mermaid was also the last Disney feature film to use the traditional hand-painted cel method of animation. Disney's next film, The Rescuers Down Under, used a digital method of coloring and combining scanned drawings developed for Disney by Pixar called CAPS (Computer Animation Production System), which would eliminate the need for cels, the multiplane camera, and many of the optical effects used for the last time in Mermaid.

    In March 1999, only one month before The Iron Giant received test screenings as well as five months before the film was released into theaters, Warner Brothers released Richard Rich's second non-Disney animated film called The King and I. To say that The King and I erased the little confidence Warner Brothers had left in The Iron Giant would be an understatement.

      Jace Fiore think about it. This film came out in 1999: it wasn't a particularly phenomenal year for traditional 2-D animation. 3-D was dominating the animation industry with hit after hit like Shrek and Toystory. The Iron Giant would be the first of many 2-D animation films that bombed at the box office. Later 2-D films like Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Titan A.E. also bombed massively due to a lack of interest in 2-D animation. It's not that Warner Bros didn't know what they had; they simply didn't care as audiences weren't grabbed by it. It's a sad fate because this movie deserved so much better than what it got.

    You will be very happy to hear that The Iron Giant is #4 on my Top 10 Favorite Non-Disney Animated Movies. First of all, I really like the friendship between Hogarth and the Title Robot. This is mostly because Hogarth is voiced by real child actor Eli Marienthal, but that makes me all the more touched when Hogarth tries to make the robot a good guy, and all the more concerned when the robot's secret is threatened by Kent Mansley. Secondly, I did say multiple times that hand-drawn animation is my favorite animation type (another reason why I like this movie), but I will say I appreciate computer animation when it is such a side dish to drawing animation. I know drawing is still the dominant style in this movie, so I can accept he title robot being CGI. In fact, I actually am impressed at how well the 2D and 3D animation blend together. I actually wish The Iron Giant stayed underrated, but that only gives me more reason to like this movie. I agree with you that The Iron Giant is a masterpiece one must simply see for oneself.
    P.S. I can't help seeing multiple similarities between The Iron Giant and The Rescuers Down Under. If you want, I can post a future comment listing all the similarities these two movies have with each other.

    Another character of note is the general - while not as prominent, he's a great contrast to Kent Mansley as he's more skeptical and yet, when things come out he's actually willing to listen rather than charging in without context; at worst he initially suspects the worst, but quickly realises the truth while Mansley does not. Not a MAJOR character, but a good symbol for the positive themes of the film - that overall people can CHOOSE to be what they want, just like the Giant (and unlike Mansley, who lets his ambition control him and dictate his choices).
    Overall this film truly is a masterpiece; the one way it might be underrated, really, is that it CANNOT get enough hype no matter what. Forget your average Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/Miyazaki, this one stands above most and with the best there is out there.

    Not just one of my favorite animated movies but One of my favorite movies in general. Not only is there a nostalgia factor (I had it on video as a kid and watched it quite a bit) but its a genuinely well made movie. Amazing animation, unique yet familiar story, well crafted setting, fantastically implemented themes and ideas, and realistic relatable characters. Its action packed yet also incredibly emotional and heartfelt and overall there's a reason its considered one of the best animated movies of all time.

    The reason why people still view this movie as underrated is because it wasn't made by a big animation studio such as Disney or Dreamworks. It's also suffering from the modern day issue of hand-drawn animation. The thing is, this film is was not only failing from bad marketing, but also the unpopularity of its art style. You see, The Iron Giant was released when the Renaissance Era of Animation was ending, and CGI was slowly rising in popularity with the release of Toy Story 2. My uncle believes that hand-drawn and CGI can work together as a combination, and I think so too. But, it's really sad that this film has pretty much gained recognition as a classic, yet no one will seem to notice it.
