Fantasia is hands down the greatest Disney movie ever made and no one will ever be able to convince me otherwise. It truly is a masterpiece. I absolutely adored it as a child and I still do as an adult. Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria have always been my favorite part. I'm not religious but everything about that segment is so emotional, powerful and beautiful.
Also, the Rite of Spring dinosaur segment was slow? Dude, I have little to no patience and/or attention span but even as a child I had absolutely no complaints about watching it all the way through lol. The way the visuals flawlessly matched the tone and coincided with the epic music is perfection. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions though.

Fantasia was incredibly special to me also.. I'm with you on the Rite of Spring section...
I was like 3 when I was first saw this movie, and throughout every single second I was completely mesmerized and captivated.
I think children can absorb this kind of art better than adults. When we grow up we have too many expectations, distractions, analytical/critical mindsets that keep us from getting lost in the journey.
Being 3 or 4, I was able to experience ALL of Fantasia. It was a journey that became part of my soul forever.

I think the best part about Fantasia that there is something for everyone. Like, Rite of Springs is my least favourite segment, but other people love it and one can't deny the influence it had on later movies, most notable the land before time. I also noticed that I preferred different segments at different moments in my life until I finally settled on (predictably) Night on bald mountain as my fav.

Although the Rite of Spring segment is good, the only thing that scares me about it is THE EARTHQUAKE sequence at the very end. Everytime I look at it, it gives me fears and nightmares on this happening for reals. Seriously, I once had a nightmare of that as a teen after watching it several times. It almost traumatized me so much, that I always kept aware and make sure nothing threatening will happen to our planet.

KoiTheBoi i was predicting before i saw spark that i was gonna dislike it and give it a 2/10 but when i finally saw it i was right about about how i wouldn't like it but however i was wrong about the rating i would give it i think it's bad but the biggest problems with the film is the generic story with an inconsistent concept with the first half about the whole "i want more adventures outside the planet" story then the second half drops that and the film turns into a pirate movie battle and characters that are very bland or one-dimentional characters. it has more of the same problems i have with rock dog and boss baby however the animation with spark makes it slightly worse than the two films i mentioned because as bad as those two films were the animation were atleast decent for the smooth movements, the energetic tone, the music montage and tims imagination with spark on the other hand the best thing i could say about it is Lord Zongs cloud effect in space but the positives end there. the movements are stiff and choppy and the backgrounds often look unfinished especially the parts where the main characters are on the planet full of trash and the part where spark distracts the guards to get into the castle

The segments are very well animated, with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Rite of Spring" being my 2 favourites out of them all. 5:02 Have to nitpick here, but the dinosaurs are not really scientifically accurate for the current age. The designs are strictly a product of their time with the knowledge that was available, but nothing I would fault the film for. However, some of these dinosaurs did not even live in the same era of Earth's history, so I don't think they bothered too much with the science when crafting this piece. =P

  • @a.j.medialover
    @a.j.medialover Před 4 lety +1

I have recently watched this film again on my VHS, and I still think it's one of the most breathtaking animated flicks I have ever watched. It's just like another certain CZcamsr once said: "It's like visiting an art museum, but with music and moving pictures.".
Some of the segments can also be seen as "predictions" of the future, like the scene with the fish in The Nutcracker Suite could have been an inspirational source for the animators/artists who worked on The Little Mermaid, the dinosaur shots in The Rite of Spring have also quite obviously been the same thing to the animators of Don Bluth's The Land Before Time, and the pegasi and unicorns of The Pastoral Symphony are what could have been the original inspiration for the MLP-franchise.
About what you said on The Rite of Spring segment, honestly, the only small problem I have with it is that it's not 100% scientifically accurate, but to be fair, that's also a nitpick, keeping in mind that this movie was made at the end of the 1930s, when scientists yet didn't know that certain dinosaurs lived in separate eras and a lot of dinosaurs weren't even discovered yet. It's still an awesome and exciting segment as a whole.
As a 5 year old though, I was always scared to watch this movie due to the Night on Bald Mountain part and the T-Rex of The Rite of Spring, but as I reached the age of 11, the movie has really grown on me in later years. To this day, it still holds a number 1 spot on my list of best animated films of all time.
It's really a shame though that a lot of people that I know in real life have never heard of this movie. All that come to their minds whenever they think of the best Disney film ever is either The Lion King or Frozen. I really must show 'em this masterpiece then if they want to argue.
Lastly, I'm glad I still have Fantasia on VHS (along with a few other Disney movies).

Hello! I enjoyed your review of my personal favorite Disney animated movie. I believe this movie personifies my preference of 2D hand drawn animation over CGI. Not that CGI is bad, but in my opinion, hand drawn animation appeals to me more like an "art" than CGI.

I agree with you on the Rite of Spring. It is kind of slow for me, but has some amazing parts in it. Though I wonder if you consider Zootopia better than Fantasia since you did give it the PERFECT score of 10, 10, 10, 10/10

I knew this would get a 10/10 but I was expecting 10s from all 3 categories. That said, your reasoning makes perfect sense. It isn't for everyone and it is good to acknowledge the flaws even in your favorite movies.

it would be cool if many animators on youtube would try to make their own fantasia. I'm not talking about the animation meme where they use EDM music, edgy plot and the same movements in the animation.

If there is one thing I like better than classic songs, it is musical anthologies.
    Forte: "The music helps..."
I can't help but agree with that! I like rating from worst to best all the shorts within an anthology, but this is more a case of rating from good to stellar instead.
7: Throughout these shorts, you may find yourselves asking how they came up with some of these concepts. I particularly felt that way when watching Dance of the Hours. Ostriches fighting over grapes, elephants blowing bubbles, and scoundrel crocodiles all ballet dancing with hippos to the rhythm. I am not as big a fan of the song and story as I am some of the others, but it is still an impressively creative short.
6: In a couple instances within the movie, the shorts come across as anthologies within anthologies since they consist of multiple songs with different moods. Such is the case for The Nutcracker Suite. Some of the more subtle songs have fish, faeries and mushrooms moving to the measures and some the more energetic songs include flowers and other faeries. While not as strong as some other character driven songs, I still love how perfectly they all are choreographed to them.
5: For how iconic Chernobog has become, it is strange to think that his theme song is this low. And again, that is against some stiff competition. Maybe it's just that it's what you would expect from the devil itself, but Night on Bald Mountain is still one of the darkest moments of Disney history. It introduced boys to nipples! That said, it is also undercut by the Ave Maria part which in my opinion kinda detracts from the darkness. But as finales go, it really does emphasize just how good an anthology this is.
4: Ironic that Rite of Spring, as in the month of life, is such an intense, deadly collection of songs. Even more so as it somehow perfectly fits the struggle for survival with dinosaurs. Really, the strangest part is just how ironic it is, to the point of starting with fire and ending with water. Which do you guys think is better? Land Before Time? Or this?
3: Greek mythology is one of my favorite story devices, and to hear and see it implemented in Fantasia's version of Pastoral is what really makes me enjoy it. While the myths weren't quite as glorious and peaceful as they were in this song, at least it portrayed Zeus somewhat accurately. And besides, not all adaptations have to be one to one with the source material. And with fun animation like that, I am ok with a cute Bacchus.
2: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is a fantastic first impression, yet is by far the weirdest short. There are absolutely no characters, no story, just abstract animated art synched to the music. It is really gorgeous too. It is like the composer is also direction the animation. And also worth mentioning, there is more a variety of instruments for this rendition than the original, and is quite possibly my favorite as a result.
1: The Sorcerer's Apprentice is so iconic that it couldn't not be included in the 2000 version as well. And for good reason; the music is as magical as it is mischievous, Mickey is a perfect combination of both, and the animation is some of the best in Disney history.

    • @TheMormonSorceress

Well the Dinosaurs's tail never drags on the ground, recent evidence suggests that it's lifted in the air, the Stegosaurus didn't appear until the late Jurassic period, the Tyrannosaurus didn't arrive till the Cretaceous period, the Stegosaurus's spiked tail should have given the Tyrannosaurus a fatal wound that would of cripple it, and it's believed they may have had primitive feathers on their bodies. And those are just a few. But like I said before, that's my nitpick and this segment still holds a special place in my heart.
