Expanding school lunch programs

  • Today more than 30 million schoolchildren benefit from the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Truman in 1946. For many students, it may be the only nutritional meal they get - and some kids are still being denied a hot meal because their parents can't afford it. Lee Cowan visits a school district in Indiana where an innovative approach to feeding schoolchildren means no one gets turned away. He also meets a New Mexico legislator who backed a bill to fight "lunch shaming."

I was in elementary school in the 80's. My Mom had 7 children, one job, and for a short period I got free lunch and it was no problem. When I got to middle school I qualified for free lunch for a short period, I was shamed. At some point I didnt qualify anymore, I was then shamed for not being able to pay for hot lunch. Teachers would call you out in front of class, cafeteria lady would dent you in front of students. I was then teased for not being able to buy the junk food lunch they sold as the alternative. I would make up excuses to not be in lunch room, say I wasnt hungry, borrow money from other children, only have 75ct to eat with, sit there making these excuses while everyone else were eating. My Mom provided food for a sack lunch but because of the shaming, pressure, bullying, I didnt want to take leftovers from home. I'd rather steal money from her purse, sell forbidden items out my locker then to take my own lunch. It's sad to see almost 40yrs later little has changed.

You know it's ridiculous that the world's richest nation has such a big problem - this feels more like the problems developing countries like India, China and so on face. No developed nation has this percentage of their population without proper healthcare, food or social support. That's the key to having a happy capable population that is willing to take risks to grow.

I've also seen schools where kids can bring their own lunch instead. In private schools like mine (super common here) we get a really awesome lunch with rice, Indian flatbread, mixed vegetables, pulses, curries, desserts, etc. Oh, and in both public and private schools, breakfast is usually offered as well.

I mean I have a hard time believing that. Churches offer food to the needy all the time. There is welfare and food banks which also help. Even if none of those things existed there are cheap foods you can eat. I am in college my food budget is 30 dollars for a month and I make it work. I bought a 20LB bag of white rice that has been feeding me for months. The only other things I buy are canned vegetables when they are on sale for $0.49 a can with a coupon I get them for about 37 cents each. They don't go bad and last. For protein, I eat eggs or some form of bean. Is it a appealing diet. No not at all but it feeds me. If I feel like splurging I buy milk but its a luxury item for me.

Yes, there is food out there. However, food pantries do have limits on how much and how often you can use them. A lot of people are not aware of this. Also, much of the food is expired. I have had situations where the shelf stable milk was bad when I got it. Or food goes bad within a few days and the next pantry date is not for another month. In general, I think people are wasteful and sadly food pantries are abused. I personally try not to use food pantries unless absolutely necessary because there are those out there worse then me. The is another way, but not sure what the answer is.

I qualified for free lunch in school, and my district handled it really well. All students had a lunch card / student ID to scan or punch in at the register. That card could be refilled with lunch money by parents, but kids who qualified for free lunch got the same exact card. You’d scan it at the register, the lunch lady would see it was covered by the free lunch program, and no one else would know- other students just assumed they had money on their card. It made the process a lot easier and less embarrassing, so students who qualified for free lunch would actually take it.
I remember strategically choosing from the menu to get as much food as possible, and then packing away at least half to bring home for dinner. My parents were proud, but not proud enough to let their children go hungry. I always felt bad for the students whose parents didn’t apply, even if they qualified, because they were either embarrassed or facing a language barrier that made filling out the paperwork impossible.

When I was still teaching I saw two sides to this. Probably 65% of our kids were on free or reduced lunch and our cafeteria was actually pretty good. However, it was upsetting to see the kids take a tray, pick up one item like the chocolate milk, and dump the rest. Then there were the kids who were truly hungry and had parents that either would not or could not fill out the forms. The system was seriously flawed and I found myself buying lunch for kids on a regular basis.

I understand how some parents don't fill out that form. The form is probably a long process and if your a busy working single parent taking care of the kids then I imagine you probably don't have much time to fill it out.

Angel S I can’t believe the lunches at schools in America all is warm and soft for easy digest and filled with sugar. Sandwiches are great alternatives here in Europe most northern country’s eat sandwiches for lunch. They have all sorts of things there’s probably more stuff to put on bread then there’s lunch combinations in America. Why would you pay a school for food for your child. Isn’t it normal to get it from the grocery store and let your kid take it. 1 bread of 20 slices costs 2 euros around 2.60 dollars I believe. Americans are so used to warm meals and a bunch of sugar.

In most schools if you don't have the money to pay for your lunch you get a cheese sandwich and you have to watch the lunch person throw out your food. I mean you do it when you have to- but taking time to just rest and eat is necessary. but there should be more collaboration between schools and nonprofits across the united states. if there is a program that is working - why not do it everywhere? why must it be so hard to change this.
