  • “School Lunch” - Sheridan County School District 1 has taken a bold step in getting local foods into the 2014-15 school lunch program. After years of deliberation over budgets, federal nutrition guidelines and a jigsaw puzzle of ill-fitted standards, School District 1 ultimately abandoned the entire federal lunch program on the belief that they could feed their students more flavorful and nourishing meals, better suited to their 4-day school week, without the federal ‘one size fits all’ mandate.

Simply wonderful. States can manage this much better than some far away bureaucrat in D. C.

Is there a way to incorporate the students to help cook the meals for credits?

From a business mindset school lunch always has been and always will be a big deal to school boards. But they all tend to forget something. The government requires all children to go to school, either public or private. With that in mind, since the government requires all children to participate in school, then the government should feed those children twice a day while they're at school. On the other hand, if the children or their parents don't like the free food service, then they should provide the child with breakfast at home and a pre made lunch to take with them. It's as simple as that. Thay will get rid of the dumbass rich kids that like to bully other kids what can't pay for their lunch.

an interesting strategy for rural areas, certainly a bit more effort & expense, however that can be made up for in benefit to the local economy which has niches for agricultural production... Including more organic & pesticide free etc, also may have benefit to children, particularly small children, and outside of family gardens or farm familys, can be still afforded & sustained on mass commercial scales when limited & reserved mostly to children! ...eating seasonally is of course xcellent idea, and remember that those with heritage from the temperate seasonal climate, are generally adapted & resilient to a more minimal veggie/fruit winter season, also, remember despite the health food crazes & fads, that some meals sometimes considered 'processed' or 'fast food quality' are easily tolerable, even for children, so long as a considerable number of fresh cooked hearty meals are eaten during the week too, one can easily get carried away into perfectionist healthfood madness, an expensive illness itself, commonly seen in these days & times, very difficult to treat... as for artificial food coloring & some artificial flavoring? It's not clear all of them are harmful in any significant way even to children, while Yu may not want to experiment with yur childs on a daily basis, a little bit of that occasionally has not set off the alarm bells of imminently dangerous toxicity, and many have been in use for a half century or more, we would see people marching around in droves & it would be removed from the shelves if it was off the charts of acceptance... when Truman signed those plans, and in following years, we must consider what was running around in their minds, and their goals! One of course getting adequate nutrition to all American children! But what else? Taking advantage of economies of scale, adding efficiency & reducing costs, better coordination of US agricultural production, adding some agricultural trade & commerce between states, creating viable test markets for new American food innovations & products that might put the traditional conservative folk of the time a little off upon seeing it spring up on their market shelves, an avocado? lobster? crazy cool baking mix? also of course ameliorating bad effects on communities that suffer crop losses, and ameliorating bad effects of global market pressures on american agriculture, by adding a government buyer & manager with exclusive stable access to a group of eaters, such can help offset the turbulent economic environment farmers & ranchers have always been in ... certainly such things, also they wished a greater element of standardization & simplification, in all ways, in all things, at the time their optimism on how far that could go with such a diverse group of Citizenry, and in terms of food need sustenance particularly, was further than what is actually effectively possible, the American Citizenry has grown much more diverse since then... we must consider some things developing in mentality those days, an idea, that beyond meeting basic standards in nutrition, that another element was becoming important too, creating fun, creating excitement, creating food coloring, an idea that these things had importance alongside meeting fundamentals of traditional need

Why do other countries not see the need to feed children while they are at school? Why aren't parents providing food for their own children?

She says sodium like it's some mysterious evil chemical ...but she then probably goes and buys that horrible salted caramel or puts salt in her brownies like americans like to do. Why do you put salt in your sweets America?! WTH?! T_T Everything is so salt and sweet here, crazy....I can barely taste the chocolate or other aromas in the cakes.
