    Before anyone says that this is cultural appropriation I want to say that head scarves are literally from every part of rhe world. Here in Italy it was almost compulsory, if your husband died, to cover your head and sometimes people still do it. So we became creative with scarves. In France people often share cultures and make wonderful styles using parts of everything. Cultural appropriation is if someone wears/uses something as a mockery or without knowing the powerful meaning it has for a certain ethnicity. Sharing cultures is not cultural appropriation, it is called globalization and oftenmore it is because someone loves a culture and is respectful of it.

    maybe I shouldn't add onto this argument, but I thought I might say something. Yes, many of the prints on the scarves that she used, and the way those scarves were tied are linked to specific cultures. In that sense, it was cultural appropriation. However, simply wearing a scarf isn't cultural appropriation. I am Romanian and where I grew up we have these things called "costume nationale" or essentially "national costumes" these include many detailed, hand-woven tunics and scarves that we wear in various styles on our head along with the rest of our cultural "outfit". These traditions go back for thousands of years, so if that's cultural appropriation I guess I give up on being socially aware. At the end of the day, there's bigger things to worry about instead of head scarves.

    • @missmegan3694
      @missmegan3694 Před 3 lety

      There is no such thing as "cultural appropriation." People have shared and evolved culture for thousands of years.

    Thank you. This is really going to help me. I was blessed with thick dark brown hair when I was a little kid. And when I got around 13 years old it all started to fall out. Now I’m 20 and I still have hair but you see that it’s not that much. And you can see my scalp really good. Especially with my dark hair you can see it very hard.
    I am very insecure about it, just because I am not the most pretty girl and I am chronic ill. The one thing I was confident about was my hair. And now that’s also gone. I am into the boho/70’s style so these hair scarfs are really lifesaving for hiding it. I wanted to save money for a hairpiece but it’s far too expensive even if I get a bit of the money from my insurance (I live in Europe). It’s not that big of a deal for others and I experienced a lot of heavier shit in my life, but strangely enough, this really hurts me.
    Thank you so much for your video. You’ve helped me a lot. Also: they look stunning on you.

    Also do keep in mind that this become part of black culture in the 18th century when a 'tignon law' was passed. To make it simple a black woman showing her hair was illigal and so they where forced to cover their heads with scarfs. It was seen as ugly until black women started making them pretty and tying them up certain ways and adding jewels to them. Now theres no problem with you wearing them, just know where it came from. Not saying you dont but least you can do is mention it

    If you could just take the time to look up 'headscarf' on google, so many examples of different cultures using them pop up. Please do not compare a 'fashion' manner of wearing these to cultural appropriation.
    We literally straighten or curl our hair, because we like to look that way. We dye our hair, wear lighter contacts or use fake tan, use henna as dye or to create freckles with and so on.... is this cultural appropriation as well?
    Let's just appreciate the fact that cultures are now morhping into eachother. This is excaclty what our 'new' culture is about... in my opinion.

    My Jewish grandmother and all Orthodox Jewish women I know, all cover their heads from the time of marriage on. My great grandmother who was European and VERY religious covered her head with a scarf all the time. Some things are obviously cultural appropriation and that's a bunch of bullshit. Something like covering your head that is part of SO many religions for men and women, that's not the same. I love head wraps, and I will happily say brown women look AMAZING in their head wraps, you all have amazing beautiful style. I believe if you give respect, and know history, religion, culture, and you do things with respect then there should be no hate. Personally even with my Orthodox Jewish background and Orthodox Christian background ( women covered their heads esp while praying).. I have my own spiritual beliefs and women , men alike wear head wraps for difference purposes. In no way am I trying to be cool, trendy, steal anything, but we are all allowed our own beliefs and convictions, again I admire and respect all of you beautiful ladies, your culture, your religious beliefs, your personal beliefs. I know I get hate for wearing head scarves from all areas, white people who assume they know me and out of racism give hate, and others who assume I'm stealing out of ignorance. I can just be me and live by my own convictions. I hope all can find peace and love.♥️

    Okay okay. For all y’all talking about culture appropriation. Calm down pls. Listen, from the info I’ve gathered atm and that I can remember. Black women wore scarves in different patterns as a way to cover their hair as it wasn’t excepted because idk maybe other people were jealous, idfk. But anyways, they were designed beautifully. People of colour wore scarves for a while whether it be a tradition, religion or just a style. Idk for white people but maybe someone can explain to me the history of that cuz I’d like some help on that pls ☺️ but anyways, that doesn’t mean other people who are not of colour haven’t put on scarves either. Chill out pls. It’s not that serious. This isn’t what we are supposed to do.

      Often in many southern European countries women would wrap their hair up while working, or would wear them after their husbands died. Over time they began to tie them in different ways. They would also be worn by young girls to keep the hair out of their faces, and they were decorated with flowers, or tied up in different fashions. That's all the info I know of personally, but you can easily find more.

    lol ok it's not cultural appropriation but the same people like 'omds I just have to buy a headscarf now' 'my new obsession' have never been discriminated because they chose to wear a headscarf and may have (not saying all or even some) been apart of discriminating poc or people who weren't off colour who fit the stereo type. I don't have a problem w white people wearing them just think that it's naive to think people won't get offended when they are literally pulled off their heads and tormented and made fun of but for u guys it's just 'super trendy!'

    • @iateyursandwiches
      @iateyursandwiches Před 6 lety +2

      Emma Mlunjwana I highly doubt any whites who were against POC wearing them will suddenly think it's the cutest thing ever now that some random hipster white girl wears it, more so if they are racist; they will just think she's "white trash". She's not even wearing it the way a lot of black women wear it anyway (covering all her hair) so what is your point about her trying to copy "without any of the backlash"?
      Also, I don't see how banning another group from wearing something fixes the issue of racism by some assholes. The goal should be to eliminate bigoted ideas against different cultures, not prevent others(when they're not racist and rather like different cultures) from participating. That shit just doesn't make sense to me.

      Ricaz I love how that's the only part of my entire post you focus on and it's only because you misunderstood me. To clarify, I meant getting mad at this video is dumb; however, it's even more dumb considering she isn't even wearing it to cover all her hair, something only black people do. YES, black people do wear it covering only part of our hair too(as she is doing). I'm just pointing out that using it to cover all the hair is a style of head wrap only used by us. Regardless, I personally wouldn't care if she did use it in that way either.
      Anyway, that's rich coming from someone who cant even write correctly.

    • @iateyursandwiches
      @iateyursandwiches Před 6 lety

      Ricaz ....Yeah so you didn't read my paragraph and you want to argue with me? Very smart...that's how you have a discussion! Not even listening to the other side before you talk! Anyway, if you did read my post you would know I'm black. And lol who said I think black hair can't grow long??? Nevermind that even if your hair is long you can still wear it coving tge entire head.
      And,again you're reading comprehension is still poor or you need to actually read my post instead of heing stubborn. I explained what I meant. Black people can wear it as she is wearing it however, they can also wear it coving their entire hair UNLIKE how she is doing in this video. Do you understand now?
      Actually read my post and stop being so subborn otherwise, stop replying. It doesn't make sense to respond to something you didn't read.

      Why would that offend you?? I'm a Muslim and another woman covering her face whether it was for religious purposes or not should not be something that offends you. Embrace modesty and not spread hate claiming to be supporting a religion when you are just an asshol*e.

      Katie, with your bad grammar, you should refrain from calling anyone a moron. Of course Becky wouldn't have a clue about the cultural significance of scarves for many cultures.

    I’m sorry and I’m not trying to be a hater. I have nothing against you personally and I’m still gonna sub but...... all you guys/ the lighter people are always being racist but yet you want to steel our African culture 🙅🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ and also Egyptian like, what’s happening 😐

      And if a biracial (black + white) person wants to wear these some of these styles? Is it still stealing culture?

    • @indiashill9966
      @indiashill9966 Před 6 lety +33

      this is so ignorant. you can’t put a whole race into one group like that. not all ‘white people’ are racist. head scarves are worn all over the world for different reasons.

      Bruh head scarfs don’t belong to African or Egyptian culture they come from everywhere
      And even if it was they don’t hold any religious or high status meaning so how is that offensive exactly?

      RinnyChoxo_ Its origins are Hebrew. And then Islam adopted the Jewish tradition creating the hijab. It was originally used as a symbol of a womens submission to God and her husband in both Judaism and later islam. It boomed in Africa way after it had already existed for jews for thousands of years. White woman wore head coverings up until the mid 1800s when it become unpopular. The african (Muslims) kept the scarves and later almost all africans (muslims or not) started wearing them. It's now becoming popular among Christians and Quakers. There is a whole movement going on.
