  • Cold weather is starting to set in, and it's time to make sure chokes are adjusted, and ready for cold morning starts. In this video I set the choke on my 65 Thunderbird hardtop in 3 easy steps.
    Welcome to Jamieson's Repair Shop!
    My current retirement project is restoring a rusted out 1965 Thunderbird convertible from the inside out.
    I'm taking it apart, repairing everything that needs repairing and putting it all back together.
    I'm doing body work, paint removal, rust removal, metal fabrication, welding, forming, patching, and that's just the beginning!
    Down the line there will be interior and engine work as well.
    Come on into the shop and take a look!

    Excellent. I have this carb on my 1964 Thunderbird convertible and this demo will be helpful.

    That engine sounds really smooth. Isn't it funny how almost all carbs one tends to run across or acquire the choke is never set right? or the primary throttle stop screw it cranked way in to compensate for some other tuning or timing issue or the inside of the venturi's are all black from it popping.

      Lol...yes, it seems to be the pattern with these old cars, everything is all out of adjustment, vacuum leaks cause a lot of the problems.

    Hello again. A very good tutorial. I went to an electric choke last year. Removed the water hoses to the aluminum base plate. Added insulating gasket spacers. The choke is operated through a ground circuit controller bolted to the t-stat housing. Works well. That said, our T-bird hibernates in a heated garage from November 1 through May 1. So if the choke is anywhere close, it starts and runs well as it never gets cold.

      Hi Walter, I would love to be able to store my car inside...but if I did, that would be the end of making videos. Lol

    Alvin,
    Making the seemingly difficult look very easy, my friend. Good job.

      Thank you John, I was just outside moving the hardtop around, and she fired right up...it was worth the effort of adjusting the choke. 🙂
      I hope all is well with you, take care!

    I spent all day looking thru shop manuals, carb repair kit instructions and CZcams videos and each one had its own confusing wording. I came to your video and although my carb is a 2100, I see the choke is the same. Now I got it done! You probably could put "2100" in your video title too. It might clarify others. Thanks!

    Hello Alvin. Another great how to video. I see the tag on your carb indicates it is a 66 unit. What fuel are you using, and do you mix any additives in with it? Good job as usual!

      Thank you George, there is a place in our area that has 91 octane without ethanol, that's the only fuel I use...I would like to use 93 or higher, but it's not available anymore in my area.

    Hey Alvin, great video, thanks for reminding people to use the shop manual since it is a wealth of info. I always use mine too since I've got Alzheimer's and cant remember anything. Setting up and aiming the camera is a bitch sometimes, I always struggle with that. Id adjust my carb but I don't have one on my Thunderchicken at the moment. I had the aluminum Holley street warrior on it but it was defective so I sent it back to the supplier. So now it just sits in the garage pissed off at me that Im not paying any attention to it while working on a Caddy. Is that cheating? Thanks Alvin.

      Hey Nick,
      The manual is a wealth of information, and it beat heck out guessing, now if my eyesight were just a little better! Lol
      I don't think you're cheating, oh wait, you're in Colorado, not Utah, does apply to cars too...now I just confused myself! 🤔

    Great video, my 4100 runs good until it heats up and then the rpm’s get really high in park and neutral. And car pops into gear hard. Any ideas to correct these symptoms? Thanks for your help and knowledge.

      I've had issues with the secondaries sticking open a little after warming up, and causing high idle...maybe check that?

    I have a 2100 1.23 and the electric choke will not set/engage when I give it the first full throttle push
    to start in the morning. I can tell the parts at 10:00-11 do not move at all and no movement when turning the lean/rich adjuster.

  • @Heat7215
    @Heat7215 Před 9 měsíci

    My 4100 starts and the choke goes through setting and releasing as the car warms up. The idle is high and you can tap the gas the and the rpm drops. Start driving same thing happens, it’s not the choke, it’s wide open. I suspect the fast idle cam setting, any ideas. Thanks

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Sometimes the secondaries stick open just a little, you can check that pushing on the rod for the secondary throttle plate shaft on the right hand side of the carb. I've had that happen on my hardtop after it sits for a while.

    • @Heat7215
      @Heat7215 Před 9 měsíci

      @@J_R_Shop Thanks I’ll give it a try. You don’t see any fast idle out of adjustment which may cause it to run high add drop off when you tap the gas? I agree with everyone else, great tutorial!

    @classics289 Před rokem +1

    Alvin, great video!! Thanks for showing and explaining those adjustments so clearly. I could be wrong, but I think the 1965 and older tbirds had the 1.12 venturi 4100 carb and 66 had the 1.08. I know Ford switched to the 4300 in 67 for Mustangs I imagine they would have for tbirds too.

      Hi Kevin...you are 100% correct, thank you point this out!
      I went and found a know 65 Thunderbird carburetor (C5SF-A) that I had stored away, and it is clearly marked a 1.12 venturi, not 1.08. Service Technician George pointed out that the carb in the video is from 1966, good information guys! 👍👍👍
