    In this video, I re-assemble the carburetor and do all the static adjustments. The video was getting very long.... I edited a hour and twenty minutes down to forty some minutes.... I hope you see how a Ford Autolite 4100 is assembled and adjusted, before installing on the engine.
    I will make a separate video of installing the carburetor, and adjusting the curb idle, cold fast idle, and adjusting the idle mixture screws.
    I am hoping this carburetor will take care of the surging issue.

    In 1982 I bought a 68 Mustang that had a 4100 on it with a really rough idle ..... when I pulled the carb off to rebuild my dad looked at the bottom gasket and noticed a split in it ..... we threw a new gasket on and put the carb back on and it ran like a top !!! ...... when I sold it it had 240000 miles on it’s original engine ...... it was still running perfectly 😁

      @@OldCarAlley I wonder do you remember what plug wires you used? My wire boots pulled away from the terminals the last time I removed them so that they do not seat properly on the distributor. Spark jumps between the terminals giving a rough idle.

    Hello Howard, I had forgotten about the better distributer caps from Standard and Moroso. When we were kids and used to do our own tune-ups we always looked for the brass insert caps and rotors! I recall the cheaper ones that came from China (sometimes with brand names like Delco or Autolite on the box) had the aluminum and they did burn up quicker than the brass. Sorta brings back fun times when everybody pitched in to help each other do tune-ups...it was a fun time!

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  Před 3 lety

      I ALWAYS buy the better caps and rotors. They last. The cap and rotor on the Bel Air I bet have been on the engine a good 30 or more years. I remember I had to replace the cap all those many years back, because it had cracked, causing serious engine performance issues in humid weather.

    I've never seen my hot idle by metal spring open. I've run the car in 85* plus weather and it always looks closed. Maybe it only open a little. I was disappointed to see that Autolite and Motorcraft plugs are made in China now. So I bout a set of NOS powertip BF 42 plugs on ebay for a reasonable price. My old Autolite plugs from 1994 still looked good so I'll hang on to them as they are USA.

      It seems like everything is from China now days. I got some old NOS plugs that are in the 352.

    Great job on the carb...
    It's no wonder they looked for another delivery system ( fuel injection )

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  Před 3 lety +2

      Engines last longer with fuel injection. All that unburned fuel blowing by rings from carburetors, especially when the choke is on, causes an amazing amount of ware, and breaks the oil down. Thats why the older cars needed two or three thousand mile oil changes.... or every 3 months, because short trips really destroyed oil quality... the choke is always on a bit in short trips.

    Question for you. At around 2:30 you talk about the holes in the carb to spacer gasket. All of the gaskets I see available do not have those two holes. You mentioned there may be some vacuum issues without them. Do you think the holes help? Should I add it or leave alone? I see there are notches in the throttle barrels that allow air to that port. I have a ‘66 Mustang 289 with Autolite 4100. I do not have the heater hose connected to spacer plate. Thanks for posting this, I learned a lot!

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  Před 2 měsíci

      I looked at an extra Autolite 4100 I have.... The one I have only uses one check ball, but some used two. Both are used in the accelerator pump circuit. Your shop manual should show where they go, and their size. I sold the Galaxie and gave the new owner the factory Ford shop manual with the car, so I have nothing to refer to, to show you where the second one goes.
