  • Symptoms of a bad engine clutch fan and how to test if it has failed. Also, how to replace a clutch fan.
What is an engine Fan Clutch?
A fan clutch controls when the fan comes on and off and provides airflow when needed. It is attached to the water pump drive shaft.
    The fan clutch engages when:
    ⦁ Engine gets hot
⦁ The vehicle is moving at low speed or idling
    The fan clutch disengages when:
    ⦁ Engine is cool
⦁ The vehicle is moving over 20-40 MPH
Signs and Symptoms of a Bad engine Clutch Fan
⦁ Overheating at low speeds or idle
⦁ Loose and wobbling radiator fan
⦁ Noise wiring noise or loud fan noise
How to Test the Fan Clutch
⦁ Spin the radiator fan, and there should be resistance
⦁ When the engine shuts off, the fan should not spin more than 1-2 times.
⦁ Rock it back and forth, as there should be no side-to-side movement (A bad water pump can do the same)
How To Replace a Fan Clutch
⦁ Keep the belt on when replacing
⦁ Use WD40 to loosen the nut
⦁ Find the correct direction in which the nut is removed, clockwise or counterclockwise.
⦁ The fan bolt usually loosens the same direction as fan spins

I did some timing work on my 4.7l magnum and when I fired the truck back up and shut it off I noticed a weird sound and the fan kept spinning after I shut it off, I had a feeling it was bad but ur vid confirms it

Could a bad clutch fan break the casting of the water pump? Like on a big block chevy?

I had a few fan clutches on, due to accidents. So far out of five, only one seemed to work right. The rest sound like an airplane propeller and make it feel like the engine is struggling against it.
Why would they be stiffer when cold and then loosen some after it heats up?
I would think it would be more freewheeling when cold and then kick in if the temperature rises enough.
Having replaced a new one, with another new one under warranty, I have had one that really seemed to work right.
Unfortunately, that was broken in an accident.
Since then I have had two, the second was another warranty replacement, but the same thing.
I am getting ready to remove it and see if the engine feels better. It shouldn't feel like I have to press more gas to overcome the fan clutch.

When you see how many times it spins after shutting motor off, should the engine be warm?

I hear extra fan noise when I first turn the engine on. Now it does spin pretty freely but I can tell that it's pulling in that extra air and I don't think you can do that if the fan clutch is bad right I mean wouldn't you never get extra fan noise if it was bad?

I had a mechanic suggest i install a new one while he was finishing up some work in my dodge ram, the truck immediately sounded like shit felt like a helicopter blade in my engine & truck wouldn't go past 3k rpm. felt like trash....that new fan clutch from AutoZone was garbage, need to order a Mopar OEM one

Same fucking experience bro smh. Auto zone water pump with clutch fan. My 1500 single cab has always had a quiet fan since new in 2014. Installed this POS and it sounds like a fucking Blackhawk coming down my driveway for the first 60 seconds man.

Would a bad fan clutch engage and disengage at random times (even when the engine is cold) and cause a loud whirring noise that increases and decreases with the RPMs? I had a new fan clutch installed a few months ago and it seems like this has been happening ever since. I read that new fan clutches can be bad as well

Hey there! I’ve recently experienced overheating on my 2002 Tundra and so I replaced the fan clutch with an aftermarket clutch from autozone (

You might have got a bad fan clutch, but a bad fan clutch usually causes overheating within 5-minutes or so when idling. It seems like everything was swapped out, which could cause this. The only things left I can think of would be a blocked coolant passage or air in the cooling system.

    • @Loojmemhav
      @Loojmemhav Před 7 měsíci

Okay… maybe a clogged up radiator that won’t allow sufficient coolant to pass through. Thanks!

@@HVAC_Mechanic as far as a possible clogged radiator what I did was I removed the bottom radiator hose and I plugged up the radiator. I then filled the radiator with distilled water and was able to pour in a little over 1 gallon to fill it up. And then i remove the plug at the bottom of the radiator to see how fast the water would drain out and it gushed out pretty quick and all the water drain within 30 seconds. What is your thought on this?

@@Loojmemhavyou have the 4.7 liter same as the 4.3 liter 3UZfe on my Lexus GS430 2002. If you took care of the timing belt water pump service that includes a thermostat then that right there is 90% of your solution. Unless you took it to a shady shop and they never carried out the work seen it happen. Other things that can cause overheating: a clogged heater core start the truck and put in full blast if heat come out then it's good. If low or no heat come out then it's clogged and needs replaced. You said the radiator was flushed and gushing nicely so that's not the problem. So, your 4.7 cooling fan clutch is either bad because AutoZone sells trash and yes I have had to return full calipers because the treats on them where stripped. These parts are from China get a new clutch..Also, test the relay that activates the clutch they go bad also. Also, test the coolant temperature sensors at the engine block or thermostat housing as well as the coolant temp sensor attached to the side ballast of the radiator that one makes the clutch work too. Don't worry about air trapped into the system these engines self purge. Last but not least and it's very rare but it does happen its sometimes a blown head gasket that allows coolant to enter the cylinder board thus burning coolant. When this happens the coolant level goes down and as you have less coolant the temperatures rises. I have seen this issue in the Pontiac Montanas and on the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero I just bought going through the same trouble shooting phase. Also, get a code scanner that way you can see what coolant sensors are bad and or relays. Good luck 🤞🤞.

@@elir.torres8642thank you so much buddy! I was waiting to hear back from you for several days and then I ended up taking it to the shop and had it diagnosed and you were right. They found two things that were the main problem; leak in the middle of the radiator and a shitty clutch. The mechanic was able to stop the fan with engine running and after he removed the clutch he saw that the temperature coil in front of the clutch was installed backwards to the OEM. So had them replaced both with OEM parts and truck is now back to normal operation. Of course mechanic charged $725 for the work which I was okayed with since the OEM parts already cost $550. Took the AutoZone clutch back for a refund and all was good. Thank you!

Have your radiator & thermostat checked. Is your coolant dirty? If so your radiator may be blocked.
