I'm so happy I've found a love for plants the last couple years.. it gives me something to do daily and keep my attention on something else, lately mentally for me has been hard.. I have kids but I keep everything to myself especially when I have those quiet to long of a time to think moments I have plants to take my mind of things even it's just a little while
We're moving to a new house next month.. and moving all these plants will be fun lol

Relaxing. I took time on Sunday to fertilize and clean all my plants (25 or so), I pruned, trimmed, untangled etc. I'm a lockdown plant parent and I'm starting to get back to the office now but I think my plants will help me even more going forward! ♥️

I definitely get overwhelmed sometimes. Occasionally I start changing too many things at once, like repotting several plants and making a mess everywhere or deal with sudden pest outbreaks in more than one area.
Mostly I procrastinate by caring for my plants, before doing household work, because I find it more pleasant and appealing 😅

    • @CrazyPlantGuy
      @CrazyPlantGuy  Před 3 lety +2

Yeah, I find if you have a lot that you need to do cause you procrastinated, it can feel too much all at once and sometimes we do too much even though that plant may not need it.

My tip would be...be efficient with your watering. Every one of my plants has a clear plastic saucer and I water them right where they are--no trips to the sink. I have a watering "kit" with a large watering can, a turkey baster (to suck out excess water from saucers if needed), my moisture meter, and a big plastic bowl (for waste water and any dead leaves I pull off along the way).

I have had houseplants since I got my first apartment as a single mom when I was 22. That was 23 years ago. I work FT, have had up to 4 kids at home and multiple pets. Sometimes I have more plants than others and sometimes my plants look better than other times. Depends on how hectic the rest of my life is. I tend to stick with more common and low maintenance plants (with exception of prayer/calathea). I have gotten away from 1 day scheduled watering and now just check on things through the week (different areas of house). I also find the longer you have a plant the more knowing by instinct that you need to check on certain plants. I also ‘do things as I see it’ whether that means pruning or washing leaves. The only thing I do on a schedule to all plants is spray down leaves with home made preventative pest spray. At the end of the day I I love having my plants and enjoy them - they relax me. In the past when life got too busy or hectic I would downsize my collection (either by gifting or because some died from neglect lol)! 🙂

Love this! I went from 6 plants in January to over 85 plants now lol. I've lost 5 along the way, but I think I've done pretty good for the most part! I made the typical mistakes in the beginning and most of the 5 plants I lost were my originals who had to deal with me not knowing enough yet(I made pretty much every beginner mistake lol). But now that I've learned a lot more 99% of my babies are thriving! I have 6 grow lights throughout room and a humidifier to keep the humidity around 65%, and my plants love it! I have almost all of them in my art studio, it really makes it an amazing place to sit and create 😊 I work home and spend majority of my day in my studio, so I just water any babies who need it whenever I see they need it. It's so nice seeing plants I've had for a while now taking off. Some of mine have doubled and even tripled in size since I bought them! And some have only grown a few leaves but I still feel pride for them all ❤

I've figured out which plants thrive (hoya, snake, pothos, aloe, jade, musa, spider) or don't thrive (peperomia, dracena, yucca, deiffenbachia) for me and only add 'thrivers' . I love the look of my prayer plants so I don't mind the extra work in the winter months. Figuring out easier ways to care for all of the plants - like bringing an outdoor watering can indoors to make cleaning/showering them quicker without a mess - is definitely adding to the relaxation factor.

Great video! I’ve had a large houseplant collection since the mid 1970’s. Luckily I have a south facing sunspace so all I have to do is water them. Rarely I’ll repot something but certainly not annually. I’m a chronic under waterer, so my plants are pretty touch. I do worry about all the plants & pets that were acquired during the pandemic being dumped when people’s lives return to prepandemic “busy routines”.🪴❤️

I love the "do it when you see it" method. I struggle to stick to a schedule if not held accountable, and life gets busy! Taking two minutes every now and then to water, rotate, or remove dead leaves from my plant babies is really no effort compared to the joy they bring me when they flourish. I leave the bigger tasks to the weekends when I have time

I have over 150 plants that I babied all during this pandemic (that's not counting the ones that I have in my workspace). When I thought of the fact that spring was coming, and that I would be spending more time outside my home, I began searching the internet and found that more than half of the plants that I owned would not only survive living in water, but would thrive while doing so. AND this would cut down on the fungus gnats. Sooo, I began cutting up several of my babies, and now have them growing that way. Most dollar stores have beautiful glasses and vases. For those plants that get thirsty every other day, I went on Amazon and purchased self-watering pots. And since the "stick your finger into the soil 2 inches and see if the soil is wet or dry" system never really worked for me, and I have broken several moisture meters, I also ordered clear pots so that I can see if the soil is wet or dry at a glance. Life has been so much more easier and relaxing for me because of the choice I made to do these three things...

I only just got into plants this year, and now that my love for plants have grown, I’m noticing things a lot more. Such as I work in a retirement home and a few of them get plants from family members, so sometimes I water the plants for them because they forget to, or a resident falls and lands in the hospital, so I’ll go and water the plants that way they don’t come back to them being dead or sick. Some residents will assume if the flower dies the plant is dead, but they don’t understand that the flowers will grow back and that it doesn’t need to be thrown away when it’s still healthy. I do have fish, 2 cats and a boyfriend, but I do still make time for my plants, because of how relaxing it is to spend that time on them, weather it’s when I get off work, or on a day off, there is always that hour or half hour that is spent loving on them almost every day.

Taking care of my many plants(185) is my form of meditation. About a dozen large plants(8" pot or larger) , most are in small pots. Hoya heads will know why. It is so rewarding to see new baby leaves on my hoyas( the addiction is REAL). It is a part-time job but worth the work. Keeping only plants that give me joy-hoyas, dsichidias, aloes and ficuses and getting rid of pest prone plants(philodendrons) has helped with motivation. So has listening to podcasts while watering plants, if I'm not feeling motivated to water 20 plants at once. I keep a notebook to track each individual plant's care and estimated watering schedule and update it every two weeks. Their quiet beauty gives me solace in my small city apartment.

Great video Christian! For us we’re teaching Michael (who’s a toddler now) how to gently treat plants with care and how to water them carefully since most of our plants are in pots with drainage holes and cachepots anyway. It’s also part of his montessori home routine. We’ll be doing the same for the new baby to come :) I think that’s the best way with a busy family - to share the things we love with them and incorporate it into our activities, the kids learn a lot from it and at the same time they become plant/nature loving people.

Thanks so much Christian for all of your tips, I do agree that sometimes a few of our plants become less favorable and we might want to get rid of them. I go around every morning and look at all of my plants and water the ones that I can see need a drink, and it's usually not all of them at once, that seems to break up things so I'm not watering all of them at the same time, they all have different watering needs and so far things seem to be working out, I have so many of my plants that I truly love and bring me so much joy, I will admit some can be divas but you just have to know when they need care and then they become less of a burden. In the winter I seem to have more care with some plants, and that is alright too. Thanks for such a great video, take care, sending love and hugs, bye for now.

I have 600+ plants. Its definitely a lot of work. One of the tricks I use is to place plants with similar needs together. That way they generally need watering around the same time. I also designate my plants by zones e.g. bathroom, living room, plant room etc. If Monday is bathroom day I give total care to all the plants in that room. You can make the "zone" as big or as small as you wish. If you are busy on certain days designate a shelf as a zone e.g . living room propagation shelf. If you have more time designate a whole room. My last 2 tips are, purchase a slow release fertilizer. You can apply it at the beginning of the growing season and you're good to go. No more weekly fertilizing. Finally, make up a good all purpose soil mix and store it in a large tote. You'll be ready to repot at a moments notice. You can amend the soil slightly to accommodate certain plants but it eliminates the hassle of dragging several ingredients around.

  • @houseplantsdelights2970

Yessss, very important to group houseplants into similar care, that way it is easily manageable watering and caring for plants groups at a time per certain day. Such as my large succulents I water once a month during summer, every other week medium size and every week the tiny ones. Thirsty ones tend to be weekly and the smaller ones every few days. Then I have my groups that can go two weeks. And of course always give a quick glance over daily to all your plants to be able to take care of plants needing immediate attention like watering/overwatered or isolation due to infestation at that moment or set aside later like urgent repotting, or just to take off the occasional dead leaf. But honestly the best tip is glancing over all your plants daily to immediately tend to a plant in distress before it becomes a problem of doomed. That way you know which need a little TLC that day and not all at once. And of course set aside weekly or biweekly large time slot to do due major overhaul of several plants which would be repotting or up sizing.

I usually do the same in the evening (with my wine) and water them…I’ve heard plants uptake water in the evening and use their energy for growing in the daytime. No stress. Only relaxation ☺️

And I’ve simplified my fertilizer game by only using Liquid Gold Leaf, for all my plants in soil, semi hydroponics or PON. So far, so good. That said, I usually do one room a day, which keeps me busy on 6 days a week. Day 7 is for props care. Going on a 3-week vaycay soon, hired a plant sitter. Hope she’ll manage.

I’m on a one month vacation now. Have lots of plants, don’t count so not sure how many, but several hundred. I spent MANY HOURS over 2 days moving/grouping my plants to make it easier/more logical for my plant sitter. Then made sticky notes with detailed watering instructions. And left a moisture meter. My instructions varied according to plants of course. But succulent and plants that don’t need weekly attention the note could be “Week 2 & 4, if less than 3 (on moisture meter) water until in saucer, drain if standing water later”
My plant sitter was thrilled and relieved with my detailed notes. 🪴❤️

Great skits. I liked the water one there in the middle. Lazy plant owner here with 150 plants. My tips: keep them in the nursery pot with drainage holes and a saucer underneath all of them. Go around with a water meter (in sections like Christian said) and top or bottom water with the watering can as you see fit. Sometimes you gotta empty the saucer (I don't take the whole plant with me) or rinse off a dusty plant, but not that often. I do neem oil prevention every few weeks with one of those huge jet spray bottles and it doesn't take all that long cos am motivated to keep off the mealies. I don't fertilise that much (liquid while watering - no dilution needed). I pull/cut off dead or yellow leaves as I see them and check under them in case pests. There are a few plants for which the water meter doesn't work (cos of soil mix - seems to be vermiculite type ones), so rely on droopy leaves/finger.

To reduce watering efforts, I consolidated the same kinds of plants into self watering planter boxes, put it on top of a big fish tank and ran a line from the fish water pump into the planters to constantly feed water into it. For those planter boxes that are placed elsewhere, the plants chosen can take a bit of neglect or under watering. For fertilizers, use slow release fertilizers. Those watered by the fish tank water does not need fertilizers.

I give away the ones I don't love any more on a routine basis so that I don't have more than about 30 plants at a given time. That turns out to be quite enough; they're confined to one room of the house with a lovely west facing aspect and french doors facing north, and in the summer some of them can live on the north facing deck. In summer the ones outside are mostly self-maintaining, though I keep an eye on water. The rest being in one room means I have my eye on them all at the same time.

I’ve never used them before. Most plants can go without water for at least a week, sometimes 2, just time them accordingly, meaning water a day before when you’re about to leave. Or if you’ll be gone for a while then maybe get a plant sitter. If you are going to use a self watering system, just get experience and use them first so you’re familiar with how they work and how your plants react. 😁
