Toyota to Lexus Instrument Cluster Swap

  • Here's how to install an electro-luminescent Lexus ES300 instrument cluster in a Toyota Camry.
    The electro-luminescent cluster is brighter, clearer and easier to read in the day and at night compared to the stock Camry cluster.
    Link to the write up with schematic wiring details:
    www.toyotanatio...
    The procedure is simply re-wiring the car's wiring harness to accept the Lexus instrument cluster. Must have knowledge of wiring, reading schematics and troubleshooting electronics.
    Works on 1999 - 2003 Toyota Solara and 1997- 2001 Toyota Camry with an instrument cluster taken from a 1997-2001 Lexus ES300. This method can also be applied to other model of Toyota vehicles.
    All the gauges and lights work accurately, with the exception of the low oil pressure light (not available on Camry), the missing security LED, and the rheostat. The odometer will show mileage from the previous car the cluster was taken from.
    To reprogram the odometer, see this post:

    I know this video is old but i recently wanted to do this. But for the wiring diagrams i needed i just called the dealership and they emailed them to me. You might have to do some calling around because some dealers will tell you that the information can't be shared but i was lucky with the dealers in Wisconsin

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 10 lety

      Good to hear. I bet you have a V6 Camry and the tachometer worked out okay? I think they're different for the I4 cars.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 10 lety

      So your tachometer is reading too low, correct?
      Remove the bulb from the low oil sensor.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 10 lety

      Good for you :) Enjoy the cluster.
      Another TN member did this mod on his I4 and got the same inaccurate tachometer reading.
      There are modules that you can buy that can adjust the voltage on the tach wire for recalibration. They're made for recalibrating clusters in cars that have swapped engines, say a V6 to a V8. Worth taking a look.

    Hello, it's amazing the work you've done, do you think that you can do in a Camry 95? if this were possible, could you help me with diagrams ?.
    thanks for your help

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 9 lety

      +Orlando Collantes The 95 isn't nearly as easy. The 95 Lexus ES300 that you'd have to swap the cluster from has a digital odometer, while the Camry has a cable driven one. Not sure how you'd get that feature to work, as a minimum. But if you can forward me both wiring diagrams I can have a look.

      I also thought the odometer was the only measure that may not work out.
      I will be attentive to your response and thank you very much in advance for the time given.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 9 lety

      First off, visit your local junkyard and see if a 1992-96 ES300 cluster will bolt into your 95 Camry without modifying the dashboard.
      The schematic diagram you posted looks similar to the setup in my car, its possible it will work. Can you forward me the 95 ES300 wiring diagram to compare it against?
      Most likely you'll just have to de-pin and swap wires like I did in this video. Make sure you get the pigtail harness from the ES300 cluster in the yard.

    Amazing tutorial! Thank you for posting! Is there any chance you still have the pictures of the wiring diagrams that you posted on Toyota Nation? The 4th picture of the matching pin changes that you used labeled "ES300 Combination Meter Page 4" is not showing up in image shack. It comes up and says "image not available". I even went through all your posted pictures and tried to find it that way and it's still not showing up!! If you do have it can you pleeeeeaase send it to me?! Nice job.
    I have a request. Do you have the circuit diagram of Instument Cluster Lexus ES300 2000? Mine blew a capacitor completely out. Its completely burnt out beyond recognition which makes the entire cluster dull. Otherwise, everything works fine.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 7 lety

      +Kraisar Gilitwala I don't have a wiring diagram of the internal cluster. I don't think Toyota provides this as thier fix would be to replace the whole cluster. Most likely the long back light tube burned out. You can source a replacement frm a junkyard cluster. They're very easy to break, I broke a few, so don't mishandle.

      I wasn't talking about this project. I was just saying in general. Like I was looking in to a key-less start, but let it rest when i couldn't find any diagrams of the wiring. do you have anything like that?

    Hi... I'm gonna do the change with my 1997 Camry. But I have one Question: You Said in your video thar the Oil Pressure Light feature it's not available in the Camry. But my Camry have it!!!. I mean, I have an indicator that warns me about the Oil. Could you confirm this??
    Another thing, could you publish the Camry 1997 Combination Meter Diagram with your anotations as you did with your Solara??
    Regards.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 10 lety

      There's two oil lights on the Lexus. I think one is an oil pressure light and the other is an oil level light. The latter isn't on the Camry, so simply remove the bulb from that socket before installing the cluster.
      The combination meter wiring diagram for the Camry is the same as the Solara. Follow link in the description to the diagrams.
      This will work on V6 Camry's. With the 4 cylinder, the tachometer will have to be recalibrated somehow. One other tip: use t-taps instead of twisting and taping the wire like I did, it should be more secure. Good luck on your swap.

      Ruben Jimenez Ok. Thanks!!!
      One Final Question: I didn´t Catch how the Fourth Connector was wired. Is there any key-Points you could elaborate about it??

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  Před 10 lety

      Ruben Jimenez
      You can either re-pin all the other connections to work with the 4th connection or tap them into the existing connectors. The number of wires is approx. the same, its just distributed across 4 connectors on the Lexus cluster instead of 3 on the Camry.

      I have a Korean version 2011 Kia Optima. My cars instrument cluster language is in Korean and after a lot of investigating, this cluster does not come with a preset that allows you to change the language. So I came up with an idea: I purchased a Kia Optima instrument cluster (English version) and put it in my car (Same engine, same everything) but when I plugged it, ABS, EPS and BRAKE lights came on. So I checked each plug and found out that all the plugs wires are same color and placed in the exact same position EXCEPT for a white and orange cable on the USA version instrument cluster. What could I do to finish the adaptation?
      Regards

      @RodolfoPerez-ij3cq Před 7 lety +1

      Btw, the Korean version does not have this white and orange wire. Korean version has 28 wires and USA version has 29

      +Rodolfo Pérez Perhaps get a wiring diagram for your domestic market and see what that wire does....its likely not a needed feature as I'd assume the basic gauge functions are all The same.

    • @speedkar99

      The cluster won't fit into the Corolla's dashboard, and I don't think Lexus made an equivalent car that you could swap one from.
