    The repair shop was asking for $125+ for this job. With your video I changed all five burned out bulbs in 30 minutes, start to finish. Thanks!

      @counkev  Před 8 lety +1

      No worries! Yeah the shop wanted to charge my parents about $100-$200 to change just the "D" drive bulb that burnt out back in 2007. They didn't, and I looked into how to change the bulbs and did it myself.
      The $100 is all labor, but it is still way too much. It only takes about 30 mins for a professional to do the entire job...

    Thank you so much for this! I am a do-it-myself kind of gal and it was so helpful. Only comment I might add is that the manager in the auto supply store where I purchased the bulbs suggested disconnecting the positive lead on the battery before starting.

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 5 lety

      That wouldn't be a bad idea at all! However I would say disconnect the NEGATIVE lead. You always disconnect the negative lead first and reconnect it last because it is what closes the circuit.

      You might also want to hold off on the repair and go buy LEDs on eBay. You could replace the entire dash for about $10, whereas $10 at Autozone would only give you 4 bulbs. There's about 20 bulbs give or take for all the instrument lights.

  • @rishikeshmichaelhariprasha7276

    Thanks for the video. Some of my back-lit bulbs are out as well ('01 TC). However, I have to imagine that the "CEL" one would not easily go out, correct? I'm now concerned that since I have some issues with blown-bulbs, there could be others that I don't know about? HMM. I will hook-up my OBD scanner to check for codes to make sure I don't have any just incase my CEL light isn't working. Just acquired the car a week ago, btw.

I used a small ceramic electric heater and put it in the car rather then start the car and use the cars heater. I want to know what size bulbs are the very small ones. And can you touch them with your fingers?

    I just did this in my 95 avalon. and it was simple... the bulb though was not burned out, i found out that it was not making solid contact as when i had the cluster out it worked and when i pushed it back in all the way to screw it in , the light would not come on.. once i made sure the contact surface was clean ( i had even switched the bulb with another just to make sure) and it stayed lit till the engine came on... tried several times and it was good.... @counkev  Před 9 lety +1

      You could definitely replace it with an LED. In fact an LED would be cheaper if you buy it on eBay in bulk. Just make sure you buy the correct size and one that is not too long. Also you want to get one that is 3 dimensional if you get an LED because if you get one with only one diode it will not illuminate the sides all too well.
      Think of it this way a single diode LED is like a spot light with ien straight beam. Whereas, a incandescent bulb (which the car came with) is like a flood light lights up the sides very well.
      Also, if you use LEDs that green cover shown in the video won't fit.

      Here you are sir: www.superbrightleds.com/pc74-led-bulb-high-power-instrument-panel-led+color-Green
      I have not tried these so use them at your own discretion but I think they should work. Also they are LEDs so they are polarity specific so if they don't work thr first time flip it around. They have different colors options so if you want something dimmer go with amber or perhaps red. But the cool white should not be that bright as these are pretty small bulbs. Albiet, they still will be a little brighter than the stock 74 bulbs but not significantly. If I have some time I'll check to see if there is a PN for just the socket.

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 8 lety

      +Zjedi No, I just pulled it out. It did take some force, but like I mentioned in the video you should do it on a warmer day so it makes the plastic trim softer and easier to remove. A heat gun or hair dryer will work too, just move it around the trim. With a heat gun you will need to move quickly around and don't need to use it for too long.
      I ended up cracking off a piece of trim on the defrost vent when I did mine. I think there is only one but even with that one piece cracked it is still very secure with no rattles on my vehicle.

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 7 lety

      bigun89 If you use LEDs you may v not be able to put the green diffuser on. This would make the lights at night be white and bright which can be straining at night. That's why I stuck with incandescents. Also these bulbs don't burn out too often anyways so I'll take my comfort and diffused light over the LEDs. Some people do use LEDs but I don't find the need and think they have some downsides in this application.

      There are quite a few. I don't have the exact numbers but I believe it's 6 194 bulbs for the backlit instrument and like 20 74 bulbs for all the warning lights. You don't need to replace all 20 because lights like the airbag warning, traction light, check engine, burnt bulb warning etc. only come on once in a blue moon or temporarily at startup. If you replace all the gear bulbs (size 74 as well) and maybe the seatbelt light you should be fine.

    Virtually any of the Chinese #194 or #74 bulbs on Amazoink or Feeebay last 6 mos. tops. The manufacturers claim 50,000 hours from the LED itself, but it's the LED's driver circuit that dies 6 mos down the road, especially if they get real cold, they start to become intermittent. This is why you can get 10 Chinese LEDs for $9. but Sylvania LEDs sell 2 194 bulbs for like $15- cause they will last. Too rich for my blood, so I keep changing them out.

    What is the red flashing light on the left side of the steering wheel?

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 8 lety +2

      That's the OEM alarm system for my Camry. It's an aftermarket unit that my dealer installed in 2001. It's a really good unit. You can push the red LED forward to dis arm the alarm so the light flashes quickly and that's it. Making it seem like the alarm is armed. Push it again and it flashes slowly and the alarm is armed. In the video it was flashing quickly so I disarmed it because I didn't want it to go off. It's a bit sensitive, so I loud noises go by or someone touches the car or tires with moderate to light force it sounds 1 horn. If it's heavy force or prolonged touching it will go off fully for 1 minute. I forgot the brand of the alarm. I can find it if your interested. It's a really good system. i love the fact that you can easily turn it off and on and it still flashes if it's disarmed.

If it is a digital cluster all your bulbs may be burnt or it could be that you have some electrical or computer failure in the gauge cluster. If so, you will need a new gauge cluster.

    What LED bulbs would work for my 2000 Camry dash ?

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 4 lety

      A size 74 LED bulb. But if you use an LED bulb you won't be able to get the green rubber filter/cover over the bulb so it won't be a green backlight anymore.

    • @3r8mo
      @3r8mo Před 4 lety

    • @counkev
      @counkev  Před 4 lety

      @@3r8mo You can try to find green LEDs or eBay in size 74 or try superbrightleds website. But from what I know you can't buy less with the green cover they only fit the stock incandescent bulbs. As for the dimmer that depends on the LEDs I have some in the HVAC controls from superbrightleds (no green cover so it's white) and the dimmer works but it does not dim as well. It is not as gradual if that makes sense. It goes from 100% brightness to 80% to 70% to 60%... to 20% then off. Whereas regular bulbs are much smoother when dimming

      Its in the description. Size 194 for the backlight bulbs. The ones that turn on when you turn on your headlights. And 74 for the warning or gear indicator lights. If you do use LEDs you won't have a green tint and it will be white since there is no green filter. Also, with LED's it may also be a good deal brighter which is something you may not want. When the light blinks once slow when the car is locked the alarm is on.
      When the alarm is on, in is triggered by loud noises motion. Tire kickes quick pulls on the door handle, dents on the car etc. It honks once if it's a minor force and then the alarm goes off for 1min if it's a heavy force.
