I think we all appreciate the upfrontness about being compensated for this review. Also I think it speaks volumes that a company as big and well established as Toro values Taryl's input enough to through him some money for his very well informed opinion. I hope 2020 has good things in store for Taryl and the gang! Great job as always!

This...is exactly how a product review should be. Folks actually get to see the machine in use. The strong points....well, sorta strong points...were pointed out and the negatives were revealed as well. I wouldn't buy one of them...but a lot of folks probably will. To me, it's neither fish nor fowl. It's obviously not a commercial machine as pointed out, nor is it a tin can sold at Walmart. You did a fine job Taryl. Toro ought to give you a contract and a mower! The hat and bumper sticker ain't enough!

I bought one, and you're 100% correct. The deck belt is crap and burned out in one season. I bought an aftermarket 5/8" replacement that fits perfectly and is a huge improvement. Outside of that, it's been a solid mower on my acre lot.

    • @madmitchsuzuki

    • @deanguando1335
      @deanguando1335 Před rokem

You can possibly wear out the spindles using that bigger belt - which ain't no big deal because they are replaceable.
But prematurely burning out the electronic clutch makes changing a belt a lot easier.

I bought a Z turn Toro in 2004. It is still running. Gave to my nephew and he flogged it, did $300 work on it, and he gave it to a small church. I think it is good for a few more years. Like tractors, the suspension is in the seat on that one...I like that.

I have the older version of this mower. It features a cracked engine block, a massive oil leak (has a 2 foot diameter puddle in its parking spot), a fuel leak that drips on the muffler, a dead charging system, and a flat front tire that makes it bounce up and down when you mow... Somehow it's still running, and I cut 5 acres of field with it all the time. It's a trooper!

I got one last spring a 2019 SS4200, I really like it, I use the mulching function when I mow. The Smart Speed is great, how it works is when you push the bars all the way forward the max speed is determined by the Smart Speed setting. On mine the three speeds are Trim (slowest) Tow (middle) and Cut (fast) The middle speed is recommended when you're mulching, fast is for side discharge.

First I’ll mention I value a mechanic’s review above some salesman that never turned a wrench. It would be interesting to follow up on how long the 1/2” belt served you as well as the no-grease spindles. I liked engine accessibility as you pointed out and the though oil changes never are much of a problem the quick change feature was unique and well over due. Always nice to see rear mounted carbs. that don’t require needless time to remove. Good to see R.O.P. as an option because in our part of the country consumers leave them folded down as you couldn’t roll one if you tried. Great dinner Taryl, thanks

I own this exact mower, except mine has a Kawasaki motor. I bought it in July 2020. I put the mulching kit on, and I mow an acre and a half.
I haven't had a single issue or problem, and the belt has held up just fine. I love the Myride system. It works great.
Overall, it's been a great mower, and I'd definitely buy one again.

As usual Taryl you explain the task at hand to near perfection. That was a great video. I love Toro mowers. I have owned 3 over the 55 years I have been cutting my lawn. The only reason I bought new ones is for newer features. Mine have been tanks - all I did was run good gas in them, keep the oil clean, the air filters changed regularly and the blades new/sharpened. I also kept them under a shed.
I know you are a man who gives an honest highly experienced opinion. Toro was smart to think of you to review this mower.
Now on another note I hope you and the boys (young men now) had a great Christmas and new year. I am looking forward to more videos in 2020. (we are already 20 years into the new century how time RACES along) I along with thousands I believe are thoroughly entertained by y'alls videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them. @@scottyellis3442 The engine has been working fine. Carb could use an adjustment. I also just replaced the starter solenoid. It's a common issue and not just Toro.
I got a great deal when I bought. Ordered it strait from the factory to their best approved dealer. Dealer set it up and delivered all free of charge. Box stores wanted $300-$400 more + delivery and no setup.

I was looking at TORO ZTR mowers a couple of years ago. Almost bought the "My Ride" 50"....but at $3200 plus tax....I decided on the SS5000 Timecutter. Same mower without the "My Ride" system. Paid $2750 plus tax for it. Going into the 3rd season with it. Only problems I've had was 1 deck belt last year, and a couple of flat tires from mesquite thorns. I put "Slime" in all 4 tires and it's been going since. Oil and filter change takes about 5 minutes with the drain setup on the engine. The oil filter is the same filter used on several Toyota cars so it's cheap and readily available. I use WIX filters on it, they cost about $7 at NAPA. Oh, the belt was available at Home Depot...cost...$21 and change. I can't argue with the quality...it's the best mower I've ever bought!

I'm wondering why you had the mulch kit installed? My last timecutter shred everything nicely and evenly sprinkled it onto the lawn for the new shorter grass to cannibalize. Never had any hay row effect and chewed the leaves nicely too as long as you blew them inward as you mowed. I bet your dealer loved matching the home depot price 😅

Just bought a Ferris 3300 with suspension on each wheel plus suspension seat. The deck adjusts to the bumps so the cut is flat. My kubota was trusty for 12 years on my 5 acres but I just had a fusion of two discs in my back earlier this year. It was time to treat myself to a better ride. The Ferris is amazing so far. Hi Taryl,
Great vid as always. I have been using a Dixon 17 38 (17.5 HP 38” cut “tractor type) It’s a residential mower but I have been using it for lawn maintenance. It’s recently passed 950 hours of use, yes it has the issues you have been pointing out (Krohler engine) it looks it’s age but it has been a good mower. Here in Australia people like their lawn cut low unlike in US I found the height settings a lot ( with only 6 ) options so I drilled and ground out extra height notches to give me 11 different settings. It looks a bit like your teeth😝 but it has helped me a lot. Hey, 900+hrs for residential mower, not bad.!

Got mine a week ago and couldn’t be more impressed. Well, I could be… the knob on the MyRide lever came off on the first use and the key fell out on the second use. Lever knob was just shoddy servicing at dealer, but the key should NOT be able to fall out while riding. Other than that, super mower.

MY KNEES ARE HURTING AND THIS IS AS FUN AS RIDING THE BUMPER CARS AT THE AMUSEMENT PARK. I SPRAY PAINTED THE BLACK PART ON THE SEAT -WHITE / AND ON MY TRAILER/ BECAUSE BLACK IS TO HOT IN 100* HEAT. I MADE A BIGGER TOW BRACKET ON BACK,AND ON MY TRAILER/ IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS MY MOWER IS SECURED TO MY TRAILER/ I ALSO MADE A BRACKET ON MY TRAILER THAT IS 2' WIDE with 15 HOLES EVENLY STAGGERED N SPACED/ DROP N MY PIN N I'M GONE/ ALSO HAVE 2 X 6 IN FRONT N BACK OF THE BACK WHEELS ( KIND OF IN THE GROOVE) ALSO , ONCE YOU GET OFF OF THE MOWER (turn it off) THEN TURN KEY ON N MOVE ONE CONTROL ARM UP, THEN YOU CAN wiggle/fine tune the position of the mower) THEN PUT CONTROL ARM BACK N TURN KEY OFF. I SUGGEST THAT YOU START PRACTICING YOUR TURNS IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR YARD/ NOT LIKE I DID. MADE MY 1ST TURN ON THE CURB N DROVE 1/2 OFF CURB WITH BLADES STILL ENGAGED. Shut it off immediately/ LESSON LEARNED. BE CAREFUL ON HILLS. ONCE IT STARTS GOING FOR THE DITCH/ IT'S GONE/ ALMOST WENT OVER THE HANDLE BARS/ control arms,HAD TO PULL IT OUT WITH 2nd PERSON AND MY 4 X 4 with TOW STRAP. BUT I LUV, LUV, LUV, MY 50" EASY RIDE TIME CUTTER. I ATTACHED A BUNGEE CORD with HOOK ON RIGHT SIDE FOR THE DISCHARGE CHUTE/ MADE SMALL HOLE FOR THE HOOK n PAINTED THE HOLE with WHITE PAINT FOR QUICKLY LOCATING

I like the belt access covers. My John Deere would fill with leaves on every use. I had to take a leaf blower to it after use. I would spend a fair amount of time changing angles trying to get the debris out of it. A friend of mine melted his cover on a Craftsman. He let the material build up and didn’t clean it and a fire started due to belt friction.

At work we have the 2015 Toro Timecutter SWX5050 zero turn with the steering wheel. Haven't had any engine problems and it has the same 24.5 hp unit as this one which after doing some research I discovered it's a chinese made Loncin engine. I too wish there were more greaseable parts and the manual steering is difficult but doable...most our problems have been with the deck bouncing off the hangers which we rigged to not happen again and most recently the bar that the deck hangs from somehow popped out of it's holding block on the left side allowing the left side to drop lower and make it rub the frame preventing raising the deck. Last year I bought a new 22 inch TORO with the push assist feature. It was to make my life easier maintaining 1 acre home. I liked the fold and store feature a lot. The finish is very good. Not so fond of the personal pace locking up so to move it you have to start the motor or flat spot the tires dragging it. The blade sits low in the deck and sprays debries ( small rocks /grit ) accross the yard. The air filter is placed so it is exposed to all the grit and clogges up quickly. Toro chose not to opt for the fifteen cent foam outer filter so the paper filter was cloggrd and a poor fit so it sucked grit into the NEW MOTOR. The spark plug loosened in the first hour. Just an awfull mower experience. So now you have a Toro mower that seems kinda nice with the fabbed deck and suspended seat. Wanna trade in ?

Reference grease fittings. The ball bearings and races they use are of the "sealed" variety. Therefore if there were grease fittings, none would really get to the actual bearings friction points themselves. At best the grease would just be pumped into the housing between the upper and lower bearing. Do you see any benefit to that?
    Good job Taryl!

@@daveshoe9776 But why do that if the current Design does not have any issues or failures? That is like buying a new car and replacing the engine because you think it might go bad. I would not want a mechanic drilling into my bearing housings and messing it up without evidence of failures, we can't act on whims.

Looks like a nice mower.... I do appreciate your integrity, and disclosure that this is a compensated review. Still pretty honest though....
If you want some cold hard truth, the average homeowner is never greasing it anyways, so they may as well skip it....
I also really like that the oil change was simple.... It was like, designed, so that someone could change the oil. that's a real pet peeve of mine, when it's super hard to do routine maintenance....
Now, full disclosure, my sister's husband's younger brother, works at Toro in Minnesota. Some of the stuff he has brought over, for them to play with, is really cool. Some of their "homeowner" stuff, feels like entry-level commercial to me... It's not a joke. It's pretty legit.... And you figure, these are demo units, that people are beating on at shows & stuff.... and they seem really nice.
    Anyways, nice job...
