Lovely video. I've been to Craster and can still smell that smokehouse!
A lovely village.
Yes, it was just dreamy! I will be publishing another video about Craster in a few weeks 😉
As usual, you two are SO brave when it comes to trying different foods -- even yukky ones!! 😝🦞😅
I think you are a bit too generous giving Ian credit. He refused to take a tiny little bite! #MiseryLovesCompany
Hello Dara! Great and interesting video. Thanks for brining us along! Cheers😀 Monique and Doug
Cheers, M&D! One of my sillier ones, but it was fun to recap my culinary adventures in this beautiful county of England that not many Americans visit!! Thanks for watching! XX Dara
I went to Seahouses when i was a kid with school, we also went to Bamburgh Castle which is right on the coast overlooking the beach.
I am finishing up editing my Bamburgh Castle video now! It will be published next Friday! 🙌
my dear friend. thank you for the great video today. really enjoy and love it
I could truly watch this over and over again, Dara. The clarity of the film, the beautiful angles, the presentation of the food...good grief, this is gorgeous!! Thank you for the introduction to Two Fat Ladies on youtube...such a delightful series!!
You are too kind!! Ian just previewed my video for this Friday... Bamburgh Castle... and said it is one of my best. I hope you enjoy it! XX Dara
I can't stop picturing monks preparing and cooking that fish!
I think monks are good cooks, so I bet they'd make a mean monkfish! lol
Oh my word Dara this has your name all over it! What a fabulous dining room with the glass/Chrystal table and chairs! Otterlie is a fabulous female Ottor name! As for all the magenta stuff just brilliant including the magenta paint on the face of the lady in the painting and the magenta pencil under the nose of another painting! All the food looked very delicious and classy (accept for the Krab sticks and Lobsta tail 🤣) The Jolly fisherman looked amazing and great views! You guys look amazing so youthful and gorgeous! Loved this we need to venture up that way 💗💗
YES! Jill, you really need to Xperience Northumberland! We love it. And going to Craster and the Jolly Fisherman is a must! I think the hotel might be a bit pricey... we had a special deal I think because they were doing construction next door and it was a bit of a mess ;-) I was careful not to film that bit LOL
Wow:beautiful
Wonderful place
Very interesting sharing
Lol. The opening looked so beautiful.. (I thought it was photoshopped!)
The ‘Farm Cottage’ is so adorable! That room was MADE for you!!!
Your reaction of the lobster tail…😅. You were so brave
Brave... or stupid!?🤔
Yes that place was idyllic... so peaceful and gorgeous!💕
We love fish- prepared in various ways. That lobster tale looked dreadful- even before you tasted it. Compressed fish/crab scraps I fear. YUK! I'd love to eat at the Jolly Fisherman though. The guesthouse looked 'posh' indeed. Very comfortable. Lovely video again Dara. Looking forward to the castle. 👌😎🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿
That "lobsta" tail was the worst thing I've ever tasted. Just abominable! 😝🤢
But the Jolly Fisherman was a delight and the guesthouse was magical!
I finished the castle video and showed it to Ian. He says it's one of my best ever... I'm not sure about that but I hope people like it!
Thanks for watching Anita! XX
What a wonderful place to stay and random that the picture has its face painted out. I like the mix of old house with silly modern twists.
Yes, I was reading on their website later that they fancy themselves the most quirky and beautiful country house estate! They have a very whimsical touch to their decor, but it is extremely well done!
They really paid attention to every detail of their interior decoration...although not everything is up to my taste, it really is exquisite.
Yes, it was quirky and irreverent but SO well curated!
Oh wow, an otter and magenta hotel room! It doesn't get much better than that! 🤗💖
I know, right?! I can't believe we just happened upon that without booking it on purpose!!!
That thumb still makes us giggle! And we love some quality seafood, so we'd totally love the Jolly Fisherman 👏 Maybe next time for the crab sandwiches? But definitely no repeat for that fake lobster tail 😁 Bicycle tire texture is the polar opposite of Fein Dining, that's for sure 😂 So, another awesome video, y'all! We are "Ottilie" impressed, as always 😉
First rate puns!👍 Yeah that fake lobster was THE WORST think ever! But The Jolly Fisherman was indeed Fein Dining! Thanks for watching, friends 💕
The breakfast and dinner at the Jolly Fisherman looked delicious, Dara and Ian. Haven't ever tried Monk fish either. Would have also stopped at the smokehouse and picked up some smoked fish to bring home! Thanks for bringing us along and your reviews Dara and Ian.
Thank you for your lovely comments, Dave! I hope you and Kathy have a great weekend 💕
Amazing Content. Thanks For Sharing. have a good day!❤👍
Hi Dara and Ian, loved the cottage beautifully decorated. Loved the manor house and countryside and sheep in the fields. The breakfast looked delicious. I don't think I could of eaten that crab either. The Jolly Fisherman Restaurant looked nice, the food too. Thank you for sharing x Julie and Tony x
Thanks for coming along Tony & Julie! We love Northumberland... there are so many great places! Just avoid fake seafood 🦞😉 Cheers! XX Dara
Perfect sounding room. Great pillow compliments! Dara approved! Very nice room. This is not how i imagine Northumberland to be! It looks idyllic. The roaming sheep and geese is like a scene out of Jurassic Park. Come on now, magenta paintings? You guys own this place right? Confess! Incredible breakfast combinations! Magenta seat cushions? This is too much!
Now you know why I loved that hotel so much! Otter names, magenta decor, and yummy food! And the wildlife all around was wonderful. There were horses right next to the room where we stayed. It was idyllic!
Loved the breakfast room! Fabulous! 💖
It was delightful! The beautiful decor, the fabulous wildlife, scenic countryside, and then the splashes of magenta were just an added bonus!
Lovely presentation at the supper. Looks impossible to fault. Oh a kipper smoker, they smell great don’t they? We love passing those, nothing better than the smell of smoked fish. Great video guys ❤
I really must try a kipper one of these days!!!
Have a great day.
Beautiful magenta pillows and lovely shell chair. If a shell chair is ever lovely. Certainly unique anyway!
I loved that room!
What a beautiful place to stay. That breakfast looked gorgeous. Crayfish is delicious, your lobster looked suspicious!! What was it? It didn’t look great. Oo the jolly fisherman looked great. Mmm monkfish. It’s delicious. Amazing food. Great video 🍻
Thanks so much! The fake lobster was mashed up fish bits (pollock I've heard) mixed with bicycle tires and sawdust, from the taste of it!
But thankfully the hotel where we were staying was amazing and the jolly fisherman dinner was top-notch! We love Northumberland! Thanks for watching XX
Wonderful upload, like it. Support you.
Hello dear friend ❤️😊
It's a lovely very interesting video sharing ❤️📷
It's great 😃
Really enjoyed
Thanks for sharing this with us giving another a big Big like thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍👍
See you again take care
Keep intouch ❤️👍
God bless 🙏🙏🕊️🎸
We're waking up in a motel room this morning. Our cellophane wrapped, stale donuts, they had in the lobby didn't quite compare to your lovely breakfast. We wouldn't have thrown paint at the Duchess! Even magenta!
My breakfast was WAAAAY better than yours! But not my lunch...🤣
😊The two fat were the goat ,Keith Floyd ,a close second. Nice to see that people remember.cheers Ian and Dara.🥖🧀🍷
Yes, the Two Fat Ladies were the GOAT! Nobody quite like them! Gordon Ramsay doesn't hold a candle for entertainment value ;-)
A friend of mine use to work in The Jolly Fisherman when we were at uni. Had many a nice meal there
That's so fun! I am itching to go back!
Banoffee pie was created at a legendary Hungry Monk restaurant in the picturesque little village of Jevington, East Sussex, not far from Eastbourne. Sadly it is no longer, although there is a blue plaque on the wall of what is now a holiday cottage commemorating it's invention in the 1970s. Many is the time I walked passed that restaurant following the South Downs Way.
Yes, I live quite close to Jevington and was surprised to learn (some years ago) that it was where Banoffee Pie was created. I have yet to taste one.
Thanks for sharing the back story! I have often wondered about the culinary history of the dish and any linkages to Dulce de Leche! I appreciate you telling me about the history you know. We will be traveling to Kent and East Sussex next month. I can't wait!! Cheers! XX Dara
Surely there is a pub near you that has Banoffee Pie on the menu? UPDATE: I just looked it up! Go to the Eight Bells in Jevington and please report back!!
@@MagentaOtterTravels I live in the Cotswolds, so it's a bit of a trek to Jevington. However, I have been in the Eight Bells, which is a nice pub and I used to regularly do a walk of about 18-20 miles, starting in Eastbourne, which took in the Northern and Southern routes of the South Downs way, which goes through Jevington as well as a whole bunch of other interesting places, like Alfriston (which has the first property ever owned by the National Trust), Belle Toute lighthouse, which was rolled back from the crumbling cliff-edge on rails a few decades ago (it's now a B&B). Then there's Cuckmere Haven, Beach Head, the Seven Sisters, a tiny hidden gem of a village called West Dean, not to mention a lot of sheep.
West Dean has a charming Saxon Church dating from before the Norman Conquest. Alfriston is certainly not to be missed.
@@Sue474 please try the Banoffee Pie in the Eight Bells in Jovington and let me know how it is! 😉
Lobsta, brilliant! My basic rule with seafood is must have skeleton, no exoskeleton.
My basic rule is that the seafood must taste like seafood and not a bicycle tyre! lol
Bicycle tire Lobsta! 😂😂
Did you give it to the seagulls? Oh my I made Monk fish maybe 30 years ago! It’s delicious I never see it. Fun video guys loved your accommodations too! ~Cara 🌺
I put it straight in the trash! Yuck! But yes, the accommodations were delightful! And I'm not sure I'd make monkfish myself, but I would definitely get it again in a restaurant! Thanks for watching ;-)
I'll try the hotel for the view and the amazing breakfast!!😊
It is a dreamy place! And the perfect location for visiting the Farne Islands and loads of Northumbrian castles! 🏰
You went to Craster and didn't try the kippers?? 😲😲They're one of the only two things I miss since becoming vegetarian. The other being cod in batter.
I'm surprised they can get away with calling that fake lobster 'whole lobster tails'. Sounds like a fake description to me.
Ian and his crusts. 😂I love crusts. ♥
Seahouses is where I trained seagulls to pinch food. Sorry. 🙄
Can't wait for the Dunstanburgh Castle vid.
I'm sorry! Now that you mention it I do recall you saying something about kippers and Craster . But I didn't remember it at the relevant time! Also, kippers look nasty and I've never wanted to eat one...
@@MagentaOtterTravels The kippers you see in shops are nearly as fake as those lobster tails. Not naturally smoked and dyed red. Craster kippers are a different colour. If you can manage to get past the looks and try some I'd say they would become your favourite food EVER!
I ate at Robsons restaurant where I bought a cream tea. Scones with lots of clotted cream and jam. It appears it's permanently closed now. A shame because it had lovely views being on the first floor. 2nd floor to you. 😁
@@Poliss95 I have a hard time believing that a fish would become my favourite food ever. Much more likely to be a cream tea!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Kippers aren't nasty at all, they're often eaten as a breakfast dish, especially in the North East. They're not usually eaten as part of a meal.
Beware of the small bones! Other than that, they're delicious if properly prepared.
@@MagentaOtterTravels I'd rather have a plate of kippers than a cream tea tbh.
Monkfish is very popular and a staple on every menu here in restaurants. We either call it "lotte" (French) or "Seeteufel" (=devil of the sea, German)
Oh my goodness, that is so funny! How funny that Brits think the fish should be named after a monk and Germans after the devil!
Most important question... does Philippe like MONKfish? haha
@@MagentaOtterTravels He likes every fish! Even if it is a MONK 😂😂
@@MadameMinima 🤣
Love Northumberland. I agree fake lobster should be called Lobsta. Fake crab are called crabs sticks. They basically use the remnants of the sea creature to bind it together with rubbery like ingredients. Monk fish is my favourite. You don’t need much to bring out it’s natural taste. I love hearing your views on things. It’s fascinating. Come to Cornwall and review some places here. You’ll never leave 😘 You inspire me to create more. Keep going talented one ❤
Thanks, love! I adore Cornwall, but have only scratched the surface. I did make some lovely vlogs in Kynance Cove and Helford, but we have so much we still want to explore!
Whole lobster tail is usually Crayfish. It's better shredded like you get in sandwiches at pret. I personally love it.
GOOD fake lobster is crayfish. This stuff was most definitely not crayfish. Crayfish is good. That blob of sawdust and wallpaper paste and rubber was inedible. Pret would never serve anything that awful. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers! Dara
We used to have Crab Sticks but it was discovered there was only a little actual crab meat in them, so they had to be renamed Seafood Sticks.
🤣🤣
I used to have crab sticks, but the doctor fixed them for me. 😂
@@Poliss95 😬
@@MagentaOtterTravels It's true what Dave says.
Living the good life at the farm house Dara.Nice to splash out every so often and treat yourself.
Yes it was a worthwhile splurge! And to be honest, it was less expensive than I expected. Between the fact that everything in Northumberland is less expensive than down south as well as the fact that they were doing construction in the adjacent building so I think they discounted the rooms in the farm house 😉
Monkfish used to be used as bait, or even thrown away by some fishermen because they couldn't find buyers for it. Nowadays it's become quite sought-after... and quite pricey. :-)
Isn't that crazy?! I guess one man's trash (fish) is another man's treasure 😉
Well, between a bicycle tire and a doughnut, I would have chosen the doughnut for sure!!! 😱
No human should choose to eat those fake lobsta tails... ANY food would be better than that! Ick!
Nice 👌
Hi Dara and Ian. That lobster did look a bit suspect. Great description though. A fishy tasting bicycle tyre. What are you like. Love it.
It was a crime. But at least I got some footage of me trying something disgusting! lol
I think we call that lobster stuff "seafood extender" - mostly used in seafood sticks or crab sticks. Totally to be avoided. 😂
The Two Fat Ladies were legends. Popular even here in Oz. I'm pretty sure I've had monk fish but apparently it isn't available in the Southern Hemisphere and we substitute it with something called stargazer (or rock lobster).
Looks like your meals were mostly hit and not many misses so that is good. Yay for Northumberland if you avoid dodgy seafood kiosks.
I think Northumberland is a great place to eat. You just have to be sensible and avoid fake seafood, which anyone with a brain would do! 🤣
nice vlog!!
Thanks for visiting
Oh I wish you had of went into the smoke house. They have delicious seafood as well as kippers. They also do other local produce like jams, chutney and biscuits. Maybe next time 😊
For sure! I naively didn't know how famous the kippers were and didn't try them! I've actually never had them! Next time 😉
I hope you didn't miss this week's story about the otter in a sanctuary (in Oregon, I think) which has been taught to play basketball to exercise his arthritic forelegs?
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I love how he spins around as well! That is the cutest thing I have seen all day! Yesterday's cute thing was a bunny who makes the bed 🤣 Cheers! Dara
The chandelier in the dining room looks awfully familiar.
I think we subliminally fell in love with that chandelier and then ended up ordering one for our bedroom later that summer!
When I was younger, the Jolly Fisherman was just a nice pub you called into after walking from Dunstanburgh Castle, before buying your kippers and driving home. A bit of a shame if it has become a "poncified" seafood restaurant. Please don't let my Northumberland Coast go the way of Cornwall or North Norfolk😢
I honestly hope that the Northumberland coast doesn't become like Cornwall as well! That would be tragic! Yes, the Jolly Fisherman is pretty upscale these days, but the food was great. Next time I'm in Craster, I will definitely have to get the kippers! I really messed up skipping that!!
A fish van, you guys are brave. Can they even keep it at a decent temperature when moving about? Lobsta! 😂 great suggestion Ian. Honestly id worry about buying this stuff from even the Morrisons very chilled fish monger.
It was a mistake... do NOT recommend! haha
Hello friend good morning my friend 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
No lobsters were harmed in the making of this video, only human stomachs.
Best comment of the day! Absolutely correct! 🤢
That room is perfect for you!
I was SHOCKED!!! Total coincidence, since we didn't know it was named after an OTTER and decorated in MAGENTA!!!
@@MagentaOtterTravels 😃😃
Ahhh...the seafood restaurnt near me had monk fish and thats what she called it...it sounded good but i didnt want to take a chance...lol
Apparently it is a very ugly fish... not one we would want to buy in a market... but if it's on a menu in a nice restaurant, order it next time!
If you call it Lobsta, won't people just think it's from Boston?? I'm not surprised it was so awful! Up here they just have to label things "imitation." Glad the monkfish tempura and curry helped make up for it! Thanks for this Dara!
Since my son lives in Boston I really appreciated the Boston joke! Lol 🤣
I live in the UK and I wouldn't have thought it was legal to label something as "Whole Lobster Tail" when it wasn't. We do have regulations about things like that after all.
I know, right?! Pretty shocking. I think that if the regulatory group saw this they would definitely give them a violation for false advertising!! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Dara
Just came looking for someone who'd already made this comment - and I agree. I'm pretty sure, at the very least, that the Trade Description Act is being breached here.
@@lokki245 definitely!
For me has to be marmite and Vegemite are totally disgusting,
Great video you stay safe 👍
Oh I would love to have seen more of the interior of the Jolly Fisherman.... 😔
The interior was nice but the view was the best part!!
The inexpensive lobster tail does sound like the stuff you can buy here. (Imitation crab) Enough spicy cocktail sauce and it's not bad.
The imitation crab is not that bad. But this lobster stuff was a whole new level of disgusting!
of course this comment was written before learning about you not liking spicy, Dara! 🤣🤣
@@MagentaOtterTravels I had a furkle on the Oracle and it seems it's Surimi paste made from Alaskan Pollock.
Did they charge you for vandalising the painting? 😂😂
Lol, I would never!

Craster kippers are famous! The ones bought from there would be so delicious. Kippers are one of my favourite things. I'm really surprised that the fish van could label those things as lobster tails, as they weren't! Apart from the price I wouldn't have known. What do you think they actually were made of?
I looked it up. They're made from Surimi, which is deboned, minced Alaskan Pollock.
@@Poliss95 I'd probably eat that. Good sprinkle of salt and vinegar on. I eat almost anything and love seafood.
Gary, you must promise me NEVER to buy it! It might have Alaskan Pollock... but it also has fillers that make it rubbery and like sawdust. Eat a can of tuna instead... WAY more tasty and healthy if you want economical seafood!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Lol! Fair enough. A can of tuna in olive oil is a regular snack of mine so I'll do that instead! 😂
Oh my gosh what a beautiful estate you’re staying at!
And that Banoffee pie!!! Wow! Yum!
It was a magical place, that estate!
Good stuff 😋
Dara and Ian. Monkfish has only seemed to be popular quite recently. You rarely see whole Monkish in sea food market because it is so ugly it’s mother would disown it! It’s of the genus Lophius and is a deep bottom dweller fish living in the North Atlantic from coastal Norway to the Mediterranean. Normally we know it as the Angler fish you used to see in old deep water books, you know, the flat, scaly, ugly fish with an antennae with a glowing tip on it's forehead..
I don’t want to put you off a new found favourite! The fact that it’s natural habitat is European waters could explain why you haven’t seen or tried it before.
Oh yes, I remember that fish from the movie Finding Nemo! Lol
I won't be buying a whole fish at the fishmonger, but if someone wants to prepare it for me like they did at the Jolly Fisherman I would definitely eat it again!
I always think Halibut is a weird looking fish, but tastes nice.
@@davebirch1976 I guess we should not judge a fish by its appearance 😉
I would have thought that the seafood vendor could be prosecuted under the trade description act or by trading standards.
It really is a bit suspicious if you ask me!
I thought the same. It can't be legal.
When you get back to America do your friends ask you what the UK is like. Cheers Bobby
Yep. They ask if I miss it and I get a bit misty eyed... but I can promise you I'm not thinking about fake lobsta tails! LOL
Hooray for the the monkfish! Hope it took the taste away from the fake lobster!
Yes, thank goodness I enjoyed some delicious REAL seafood after that fake monstrosity!
That Lobsta tail is ALIVE!
It tasted like something that was never alive... more like manufactured in a bicycle tire and sawdust factory! haha
@@MagentaOtterTravels 😝😝
Hiya. Even though it should be pretty obvious to all and sundry from the outset (lobster for £2?), as an ex-caterer and victualler, I have to say that stallholder, if not careful, is in danger of being prosecuted under the Consumer Rights Act and/or the Trade Descriptions Act. Back in my day, local fishmongers would have labelled those 'tails' as Large Pinks. Anywaaay, stay safe. All the best to you.
I have never in my life heard the word victualler! Please explain. Interesting to hear about your previous career! And I absolutely agree. That seafood seller definitely needed a different name for those disgusting things...🤢
@@MagentaOtterTravels - Several meanings of said word in use in Britain, both past and present. Mine means a posh pub landlord, though whether the person or the establishment I ain't sayin'. 😄
@@MagentaOtterTravels - I suppose I was a licensed victualler!
@@Andy_U I love that! So now tell me what a publican is?
@@MagentaOtterTravels - I believe a publican, technically, ONLY sells alcohol. I was about to say, we're getting into 'Old English' now, but, apparently, in Ireland, a victualler is a butcher! So much for English.
Odd coincidence, there was a programme this week about Caster on BBC2 which is not a place l had heard of before! Thank you for the public service announcement to beware of whole lobster tails that cost £2.
Whoops, l meant Craster, not Caster.
It also said that the Craster family have lived there for 800 years. The present owner showed the house which started as a Peel Tower.
Craster is DEFINITELY worth a visit! Home to Dunstanburgh Castle ruin which I'll show in an upcoming video. Quite a picturesque place!!
Any human with ANY sense at all would not buy a lobsta tail that costs £2! I should have been more sensible...
Well, we live an learn!
that hollandaise sauce looks split
Yes, I'm afraid so. I noticed that when I was doing the edit. But it was still very tasty!!
It looked as though that Hollandaise sauce had split.
Yes, I noticed that when I was doing the editing... that's the hazard of closeup footage haha
OK, so the lobster tail texture was like a bicycle tyre... Front or rear?
I prefer the front tyre. It has a lighter texture. 😁
Whichever tire is worse!!! 😝
Did the lobstah tail taste like sushi?
Not at all! Imagine the texture of a bicycle tire that tastes like old gross fish mixed with a lot of sawdust 🤢
That's what I call a bling-bling shower.....🤣🤣
Yes it was!!
It wasn't a rock, it was a rock lobsters 🎶
I wish it had been a rock lobster, instead of a fishy bicycle tire!

Well, I understand your point, Jean! I do think that rainshower heads need to also have a handheld shower head as well. I have long hair that is a faff to shampoo, and often the gentle trickle of a rainshower is not and efficient way to shampoo it!
