- Finally! It's PUFFIN TIME! Please join us on this tour of the Farne Islands, in search of puffins. Along the way we will also see grey seals, guillemots, terns, gulls, cormorants, kittiwakes and other lovely creatures who live in the islands. Also we will learn a bit about the wildlife and history of this area.
A friendly wildlife photographer (Clive Morgan) on our boat tour generously offered to share his photos of the day... so stay tuned for those at the end of the video. A link to his Facebook page is below..

It is well worth the trip North to experience it... but make sure the boats are landing. They are not now because of the bird flu. Although Skomer Island in Wales is still running their tours.... and that is closer to home ;-) Thanks for watching, Paul!

Just think if you went there and started eating fish & chips or ice cream amongst all those hungry birds, you'd need crash helmets instead of hats ! 😉 The quality of your video was first class, a joy to watch. 👍

Ian was grinning ear to ear... it was a dream come true. And we are SO lucky we went when we did, because later in the summer the island was closed for landings due to bird flu, and it is again closed this summer too!
Yes, it's no wonder they don't serve you fish & chips or ice cream cones on that island... can you imagine the gulls and terns?!?!

Are you feeling lucky punk? Ian looks excited for the Puffin hunt. Dara your braver than me, I can’t be near calm boats. Might give the sea sickness tablets a go as i do feel like im missing out on a lot. Such a lovely sound isn’t it? Wow thats a lot of guillemots, that photographer got some cracking shots. Yes those seagulls are a pest aren’t they? The seals seemed happy and curious to have you pass. Wow Puffins on grass walking around, beautiful. Never seen that many in one place before. Good job everyone was wearing hats! Well done Clive! 👍
We DID feel lucky and we really were! Kwells is a fab medication for motion sickness, I highly recommend. Although I can only go on boats when the water is TRULY calm! The birds were all phenomenal. It was an amazing day! Definitely the most puffins I've seen in one place. And they are so cute walking around and taking off and landing! Thanks for watching, Nick and Jill! XX

I think the story of Grace Darling and the wreck of the Forfarshire is fairly well known amongst us Brits. What is less well-known is that she died just four years later, at the age of 27, so she hadn't much opportunity to enjoy her heroism.

Yes, Clive is a brill photographer! There are so many wonderful things to see around Bamburgh! I finally did a vlog of the castle (on my third trip there!) and also finally made it to Holy Island. Wow, a twitcher's paradise. Some great shots there Dara, and Clive's photos are amazing. The sights and sounds reminded of when we visited a colony of King Penguins. A million birds. The noise, the smell, the colourful penguins it was amazing. It is trips like yours the turns the casual bird photographer into a twitcher. 🤣 I didn't expect the boat tour would turn into a walk as well. That was a bonus. Often they don't like you setting foot on the birdy islands. I loved the seals too.

We were extremely lucky that we were allowed to land on the island. Sadly, later last summer the bird flu set in and killed about 6000 birds on the islands there. They stopped all boat landings and still have not resumed them.
Now that Ian has had his chance to see puffins, we need to plan on us taking a trip to the Isle of Mull so that I can spot otters in the wild! Lol 🦦

@@MagentaOtterTravels I had to look up Mull to see if it was the same Mull as in Mull of Kintyre. It isn't, but it is close. I found this in the Wiki "The island is home to a population of otters that live in coastal habitat, hunting during the day. The Mull Otter Group was established for the conservation needs of otters on the Isle of Mull."
Sounds like you'll have the best chance of of seeing wild otters if they hunt during the day.😀

Also, the Isle of Mull is home to one of my favourite cheddar types of cheese! Otters and delicious cheese! Perfect place to visit, right? 🧀🦦
@@MagentaOtterTravels Absolutely! We bought a whole bunch of bries last night. Supermarket getting rid of cheese close to the best before date - 90% off. Wedges normally 12 bucks going for $1.20. So we bought a whole range - some French but about 8 different Aus varieties. They will obviously still be consumed before the BB date - we love our brie. Sadly, no otters in the store. A few pigeons though 😁

The first 16 years of Mr life we went to Seahouses on holiday, I am now 78 years old, I I drove down past Seahouses. Bamburgh and a little village 14 miles away called Newton by the Sea. I learnt to scuba on the Farnes when I was 20 years old on the Farnes after I had done a basic course in same. We used to dive in front of Longstone lighthouse, which was maned in those days, and we always talked to lighthouse keepers as they didn't get many visitors then . I love these islands so much I really moved by you video. Thank you.

Fantastic photos by Clive, but don't underestimate your videos shot on the smartphone, they're good too. I have never seen a puffin, but the next best thing is watching your video! I've heard of Grace Darling but I'd forgotten the exact details of the story. I loved seeing the painting - I think classic paintings look great in videos! Northmumberland makes me think back to the 600s and 700s when my namesake lived on Lindisfarne!

I think it’s fabulous that Puffins are being celebrated. I’ve spent years lying on the wet cliffs of North Yorkshire just to catch a glimpse. I’m a little saddened that dormouse are being recognised with a 1p coin. Coins of lower denomination disappear so often. Dormice are beautiful and deserve to be remembered as more than just a character in a Lewis Carroll novel.
They should've done the leaves on the one pence piece. Because to your point it is the most likely candidate for discontinuance..

Hiya Dara and Ian, what lovely birds they were, here in Whitehaven, we've got a RSPB bird sanctuary, its at St Bees head, but has no boats to go and see them, but that dosen't matter, its worse when its nesting season, my friend was trying to get to her house, she got attacked so she had to go to Accident and emergency to get her head stiched, that was off a mother and father seagull, so Dara and Ian please be careful during nesting season, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Oh my word! I hope your friend wasn't injured very badly! Gulls can be vicious, as well as terns. Wild animals are very intent on protecting their young!

We were so lucky on our first trip there. We were allowed on to the islands too. They then stopped them because of bird flu. So it’s great they’re back on again.
We were attacked by terns and saw a gull take a Guillemot chick.
One of our favourite wildlife trips anywhere.

Yes, we were so lucky also! They stopped boat landings later that summer, and now they are not landing again. That bird flu has been awful! 6000 dead birds last summer on the Farne Islands 😢

Of course I thought of you and your hubby when I saw those kayakers in the water! I think June is the best time to visit the Farne islands. Iceland might be a better place to see puffins, but in the British Isles I think the best places to see them are the Farne islands in England and Skomer Island in Wales .

The memorial to Grace Darling in the churchyard in Bamburgh is magnificent, with praise from Queen Victoria.
There is a small RNLI museum opposite which has the boat she used.
Yes, I saw that museum but sadly did not have time to visit it. It was great to see her memorial in Bamburgh and then see the island and lighthouse where her heroics happened 💕

That's a great black-backed gull. I can also tell you that Otters and Seals are not closely related ☺️ Otters are Mustelids - same family as Weasels, ferrets and Wolverines (although you might not think it!).
You are right, otters do look like weasels and ferrets. But I like to think of them as cousins to seals... even though they technically aren't ;-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Cheers! Dara
Don't be too hard on the Gulls. Their natural food herring, sprats and sandeels, have been fished out. They have had to find other foods. The herring gull is a conservation concern and it's status is RED. They are in decline.
Fair points. They don't deserve to become extinct. But I do wish they wouldn't eat puffins!

In June we are going to visit Farne Islands for the guillemots and Puffins. With this boattrip, how much time are you allowed on the puffin-island?
i'm excited for you that you get to visit the Farne islands! I can't remember exactly, but I think it was about an hour on the "puffin island". It was plenty, though, so it worked out well.
I hope the avian flu is all cleared up! That was an awful tragedy that happened after we did our trip 😢
Post from the RSPB just came up on my feed. They're selling puffin cushions, puffin mugs and lots of other puffin things. The puffin ornament looks really nice. Otter oven gloves too. 😁

Yes we’re taught about Grace, and also about the invention of the unsinkable self righting lifeboat, still preserved in South Shields.

If you want to see puffins, come to Fife and go out to the Isle of May , the biggest colony of nesting puffins along the east coast. Lots of wildlife on the May and a fascinating history

They are tricky birds to track down! I think the only sure thing is to go to Iceland!

In English English, a calm sea is described as being like 'a millpond'. We learned about Grace Darling, while in Primary School.
Mill pond! I will have to remember that one! My favourite Mill Pond is in Carew, Wales, by the castle 🏰❤️
Hi Dara. I was taught about Grace Darling in my tiny, Welsh-speaking 'Ysgol Babanol' (Primary, or Elementary school) on Anglesey, way back in the 1950s. However, unlike you, I have never visited Northumbria; despite having spent three years as a student in glorious Durham. I was always hurtling through Northumbria on the train, en route to visit my Scots relations in Edinburgh or Elgin. Did you get to visit Lindisfarne Island, too?

Durham is the ancient capital of Northumbria, so you have been. Were you haven't been is Northumberland, which is not the same.
I would have said that the mystery bird was probably a great black-backed gull in summer plumage (I think the wing feathers are too dark for it to be a herring gull, and the less black-backed gull has yellow legs). If so, it's the largest of the gull family and noted for being aggressive.
Definatly a greater black back.

Currently still on my bucketlist. The bird populations were decimated by avian flu last year and the islands are still closed to visitors, although you can sail around them.
The bird flu was devastating!!! I'm hoping that goes away completely soon and boat landings can resume. 🙏

Myself, my wife and daughter are visiting Northumberland the week after next with top of our list of thing to do being to visit the Farne Islands. Can we ask what time of day you visited? I assume you are restricted to waymarked paths and everything you filmed was visible from them and, finally did an hour feel long enough? I'm so excited for you! Northumberland is beautiful, and the Farne Islands tour is a gem. We went on a morning tour and the timing was great. The island is small, so you just stick to the areas that are marked as OK to wander in, and you have plenty of time to see what you want. I have several videos of Northumberland, covering favourites towns we have visited and LOADS of castles. I think drone flying is a pretty bad idea given all those birds... and yes I'm sure it's prohibited.

You can see Puffins at Bempton cliffs if you dont have sea farers legs/stomachs although not as impressive as the Farne Islands
