American Visits Bamburgh Castle

  • On my first visit to Bamburgh in 2010, we drove by the castle and I said “oh that looks like a nice place to visit, we need to come back!”
Then in 2021 we returned to Northumberland and I came to Bamburgh again, only to discover that the castle was CLOSED to the public because Harrison Ford, along with the rest of the cast and crew were in the castle filming the latest Indiana Jones movie, called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It is allegedly the last installment in the Indy franchise. Coincidentally, that movie will be released in the next couple weeks, and here I am finally publishing the vlog of my 3rd visit to Bamburgh... in 2022 when I was “third time lucky” and finally toured inside the amazing Bamburgh Castle!
So come along with us as we see inside and out what makes this castle so special!

Bamburgh is also the seat of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Who is the protagonist in The Last Kingdom. Really digging that show. A bit like Vikings - which brings us around to your next video about Lindisfarne. 😁 This is a great castle. Some really interesting history. Did enjoy this muchly.

I have been to Bamburgh Castle and eaten at the Copper Kettle. It was lovely. 2 years ago. My mum and dad went about 30 years ago and their party were surprised to be greeted at the door by the then Lady Armstrong, an Italian lady, who gave them tea and biscuits and showed them some things that most day trippers don't see, including a secret underground passage which was used to bring supplies in during sieges. In the 1920s two curious young boys got trapped down there, but luckily they were rescued. My sister and her husband just went there last week.

Definitely a snooker/billiard table (the purists will go for the latter, as it's the older game by about a century). Pool is played on a much smaller table. A full size tournament table is 12ft by 6ft, whilst a pool table is up to 7ft x 3.5ft, although are often a bit smaller.
Billiards dates from the 18th century, but is based on a slightly earlier French game which lacked the pockets. Snooker appeared in the middle of the 19th century. Eight ball pool originates from the USA from about 1900, but earlier versions existed from the middle of the 19th century.

What you didn't mention was that the castle acted as a cutting edge for its time pioneering dispensary/hospital just over 200 years ago providing free medical care and dispensing aid to the poor. If the poor could not get to the hospital it would send a carriage to pick them up. Dr Sharp the founder ( using substantial funds from Lord Crewe ) also pioneered inoculation against smallpox for kids , he was also dubbed the world's first coastguard,. The keep was transformed into a coastguard station and first lifeboat station was opened by Dr Sharp as he set up a patrol system to watch over struggling ships in the treacherous waters. In 1786, Dr Sharp launched the first ever lifeboat at Bamburgh. He ensured shipwrecked sailors were rescued and subsequently saved from drowning or cold exposure by treatments such as use of artificial respiration 'machines' using bellows for bring drowned men back to life and re-heating bodies by sharing body heat and use of electrification treatment.. More specifically on the hospital can be found at academic.oup.com/shm/article/29/3/467/2353963

Down in Kent a Canadian lady has bought her own castle in the village of Lympne on the Kent coast (Lympne castle). It's open to the public for weddings etc and holiday accommodation, just the place to stay for you 2 historians, you'd feel right at home ! If historic dark deeds are your thing, another Northumbrian castle, Chillingham, is the one. Renowned for its vengeful torturer & jailer, John "Dragfoot" Sage, it also has the most comprehensive & convincing set of torture implements & ironware I've seen. Not suitable for easily "triggered" snowflake types. Then there are the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, down the coast from Bamburgh, still in a pole position, esp. when you've climbed to the highest point on it, to appreciate what an imposing & fear-inspiring defensive redoubt it must have been. To deter evil-do-ers from the sea.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and a few fun facts on those two other castles! They are both VERY interesting places to visit! I actually have done videos about both of those castles here:

@@MagentaOtterTravels yes, I subsequently discovered that & watched them 🙂 Dunstanburgh was an amazing location especially, and your coverage of Chillingham was good in conveying what a wacky & interesting place it is. Even the eating room/cafeteria had an interesting atmosphere & ambiance. Shame more British people don't, or can't afford to benefit from these, due to prices/travel costs 😞and I'm pleased that you can appreciate these "treasures" & can convey that to everyone regardless of location etc

George's tiny cottage is on the Great Lime Road, Newcastle & , I'm ashamed to say , is used as the home for the caretaker of the nearby school (it's signposted but that doesn't cut it does it ?)
