  • We can't all own (or even try) some of the coveted classic vintage audio gear....as a result, some studio equipment develop a legendary magical reputation...that simply using it will make your mix 10 times better. My studio partner calls it "Unicorn Dust".
    Even more common, perhaps driven by nostalgia....we search for cheap hidden gems, usually in the form of vintage consumer grade audio components (tape cassettes, consumer grade mixers, old spring reverb units, even Radio Shack brand Synthesizers)...hoping that they will sound better than the tools we have available to us today.
    Good news is, there's lots of room in modern music production for all types of sounds...good or bad. But...it's easy to go broke quick spending money on things you'll only use once in a while or even worse...repair costs for analog gear!
    In this video I hope to make it easier for you to chose whether or not to track down and spend money on a Pioneer SR-202W Spring Reverb unit.
    Does the Pioneer SR-202W Spring Reverb live up to the internet hype?
    I'm not sure...but I like it. Demo with a bunch of different instruments.

      Thank You!...took me about 15 years...but i think i can finally get a decent drum sound in my little studio. thanks! (u87 on snare, fet47 clone on kick and stereo overheads (townsend labs sphere) ...keeping it simple seems to work out!)

    I just got mine in the mail! Have a pretty strong hum and I am wondering if that is just mine or if yours is the same. Yours sounds pretty clean in the demos. Any suggestions?

    • @RobeMusic
      @RobeMusic  Před rokem +1

      Mine is clean...(luckily...it's over 30+ years old and has been sitting in storage for years) but I'm used to dealing with issues with old gear, so here's some ideas. I'd start with some simple fixes....try plugging into different outlets (if you have a power conditioner plug it into that)....try different RCA cables....rca is not grounded so noisy especially with cheap cables....you could try converting the outputs to 1/4" TS connectors. (that's one of the fixes that I've seen other guys do)
      But...most likely you have a bad or worn transistor(s). (pioneer apparently used really bad transistors in those units...2SC871 are rated in the top ten of worst of all time!) i have not had to replace those in mine (yet)...but i did do some research before i brought it out of storage. They can be replaced with KSC1845. if you search mouser or digikey you should be able to find them. I've also seen rebuild packages on amazon....but don't know if i'd trust the components in those kits. there's a lot of space on the circuit board so not that difficult a job. if you're new to soldering you could probably still do it...but i'd practice on something else first.
      Last and most modern solution...buy izotope RX (or another really good noise reduction plugin) and try that out. I use Intellijel springray spring reverbs as well, those are REALLY noisy...but with a little noise reduction it's not noticeable in most mixes.

    2:25 the tape inputs the way they were originally intended.
    Are they inputs and out outputs but just running through thr same verb?
    Is thr idea you can use it as a send from 4 track tape recording?

    • @RobeMusic
      @RobeMusic  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Sorry for late reply. the idea with the tape ins/outs was so you could attach 2 tape machines from your home stereo, and add reverb to your recordings. they function the same as the amplifier outs..same reverb signal. Wouldnt work for 4 track recording. mode selectors on the front panel are used to route the signal. (either A play back, B record or the other way around)

    I just acquire on of these and excited to use, when I hook the RCA to 1/4 in cables ( and also RCA to XLR) I get a horrible buzzing/hum.
    Any advice on how to fix this issue?

    • @RobeMusic
      @RobeMusic  Před 5 měsíci

      If it’s a really loud hum it’s probably a ground issue…but it really could be a ton of different things. I took mine apart and cleaned it, checked all the caps and replaced some of the diodes. But…mine was in pretty good shape to begin with. I’d suggest taking it to a tech…but it’ll probably cost more to fix it than what you paid for it. If you’re ok with soldering I’d suggest sourcing parts and fix it yourself.
