    Hi-Fi is a complicated hobby. Here are the lessons I’ve learned over the years that have helped me in my decision process when making all the tweaks and changes to achieve what I consider to be be my end-game sonic performance. If my curiosity died tomorrow morning, I would be content listening to music with this stereo system for life! But, I am curious, so there will be more experiments.

      What most people don't realize, the room is just as important, if not more important than the equipment.

  • @howardskeivys4184
    @howardskeivys4184 Před 5 měsíci +3

    The room???
    I recently had my local retailer send my 30 year old amp back to the manufacturer to be refurbished. When they phoned me to advise my amp was ready for collection they persuaded me to audition the 2 new amps, higher up in the manufacturer’s range. I agreed providing it was a blind audition.
    2 days later I found myself sitting in the retailer’s listening room armed with a bag of CDs and vinyl records. Their CD transport was different to mine. As was their turntable, their preamp, their speakers, their interconnects and cables. Their listening room was vastly different to mine. Theirs was 5 times larger. Most strikingly their room height was 22 feet, my room height was 8 feet. Theser room was carpeted and sparsely furnished. My room has hard wood flooring and is densely furnished as it is also my family lounge. Their room had small windows with heavy duty curtains. My room has one long wall as end to end and floor to ceiling window, with vertical blinds. You get the picture. The only commonality was the same DAC as me and amp.
    They put amp A on and started playing my vinyl copy of white ladder by David Grey. Literally, within a couple of seconds, I knew beyond any shadow of a doubt, I was listening to my 30 year old amp. Listening to a selection of tracks from other vinyl and CD sources, only served to confirm my original diagnosis! I then listened to amp B and amp C. They were presented, as it transpires in order of price, as I also correctly diagnosed. Amp B, twice the retail price of my amp was virtually indistinguishable from my amp until they swapped the speakers for a more difficult to drive pair. Amp B displayed tighter bass control.
    With so many variants, the room being by far the biggest variant. How was I able to so easily identify my amp? Surely the room would have clouded the sonic characteristics sufficiently as to make that identification, impossible. It is my belief, drawn on years of experience, experimentation, trial and error, blood sweat and tears and much hard earned cash, that providing your room’s RT60 level is within acceptable limits, the more accurate musicale reproduction provided by your gear, the less need there is for room treatment.
    I’m a firm believer that room acoustic solutions are often a costly manufactured cure for trivial or non existent issues and I’m waiting for some to unequivocally, prove me wrong.
    When, back in the early 80s I started my hifi journey, it was impressed upon me that the big money should go on source equipment. Crap in, crap out! For years I adhered to this hypothesis. Until I made an impulse purchase of a pair of speakers reduced to half price. The difference they made was far greater than any source components had made. So I concluded that the big money should go on speakers. Around this time, I joined the internet and CZcams hifi community, only to find that many, had arrived at the same conclusion. Now, many years later, the buzz word appears to be room acoustics. I wonder what the next 10 years will manifest? Room temperature? Humidity level? Atmospheric pressure? Wind direction? Inter relationship of the planets? Whether the tide is coming In or out? Air quality and pollution levels? Etc. LOL!!!

      @@hificave the point I was trying to make is:- if you are fortunate enough to have a dedicated listening room? Furnished only with your hifi gear and listening chair. Then chances are, acoustic treatment may benefit your listening experience. But for me and I suspect many in the same position as ne, whose hifi has to fight for it’s right to be, in our family lounge the soft furnishings, carpets, rugs, cushions, sofas Etc. Are likely sufficient to bring the RT60 levels well within acceptable limits and negate the necessity for further acoustic treatment!

      @@howardskeivys4184. I agree that if I had to rank each area of importance that speakers would be first. I can take a moderately priced integrated, paired with great speakers and leave a room full of people impressed. There's no way I could impress anyone with a 20k front end and cheaper (store bought) speakers. However that only applies to casual listeners. I myself cringe when I hear a cheap front end on my speakers because I know the difference and what's missing. To be fair, I feel the same about moderate room treatments. I just moved my system to the living room while the main listening area is under construction. I can testify that my beautiful sound is ruined in this setting. Many would still enjoy it I guess, but so much is now missing. Good luck to you in your musical journey.

    LOL - you are really making me smile. I guess we are twins because I am talking about exactly the same things you do but in German ;-)
    I 100% agree with your triangle when we are talking about HiFi or High End whatever you want to call it, but the moment we are talking about music, everything changes. Then it is the source that matters most and the room has almost no influence at all (if the bass is not completely resonating of course)
    A friend has a super duper high end system, he likes American gear so he has the biggest Maggie, with the 2nd greatest McIntosh Monos, big McIntosh Preamp, Verdier Turntable, EMT Tonearm and SPU-A, and of course he has this giant power conditioner from shuni-something and 10k power cords, the whole 12-yards. And by HiFi standards his system as you might guess sounds phenomenal. He has a separate listening room and it is fully treated of course.
    You know what we are discussing atm? If he should buy 30k power cords or start from scratch. And he says when it comes to listening music sometimes his radio in the kitchen or his car stereo is more impactful than his giant stereo setup.
    I am sure you can guess what my advice is. Get a cheap KT-88 single ended ChiFi amp for 400 bucks and I will lend you my 2-way horn speaker (similar to JBLs famous 4425 but DIY) and then you need to use this for at least the next 6 month to make a shift from HiFi to music and then we can start to figure out what single ended amp and what speaker design is for you.
    But in terms of HiFi absolutely everything will get worse and you must be prepared for it, that's why you need the time to listen to the new setup.
    And the really big downer is that in the end you can not really buy it, you need to build it, on the plus side you will never think about a 10grand cable again, you might think about another resistor for $2.50

    Quality of the recording is probably the most important. That varies widely, even with "audiophile" recordings. The speaker/room interface would be next. Once you settle on the flavor/type of the speaker, which varies widely, you can then choose an amp that will drive them properly.

    Hello Loïc.
    Like you, the difficulty of this passion for music reproduction at home is to obtain the perfect synergy of all the elements, and in this synergy, everything counts. I call it the mayonnaise effect (yes, I'm French, so ...). You can look for the best components to make a sauce, but all you get is a mixture of egg yolk, mustard and olive oil. I've just found this out again with my new Musical Paradise DAC. The musical result is very good. I had ordered an inexpensive AHP fuse for my DAC. It was broken in on the Musical Paradise for 4 days. Then I changed my mind and ordered an SR Purple which took the place of the AHP fuse. It took a total of 16 days to break-in the dac (for the output capacitors, Miflex claims 1000 hours of break-in!!).
    After two or three days of listening, I thought I'd use the unused AHP fuse ($25) with my FEZZ audio Mira Ceti SE 300B amplifier. I wasn't expecting much. And the mayonnaise effect happened! The impression of suddenly having a system twice as expensive. It's just the pinch of spice that was missing from a very good dish, so that it becomes just exceptional and the simple egg, oil and mustard mixture turns into mayonnaise. And I have to say, in 45 years this has only happened twice. And it's just like the guy who wins the lottery, a happy accident. Finding it on your own is extremely difficult. It takes a hell of a lot of luck. Thanks for your videos, which I love :)

    I'm both a drummer/percussionist and saxophonist, so Yuri Honing Trio's ''Walking On The Moon'' is one of my ''Go-To'' demo & system evaluation tracks. Also Jen Chapin's ''You Haven't Done Nothin' (Stevie Wonder cover)''.
    But you're right, complex tracks with a lot of dynamic instrumentation going on all at once will make or break a system that is otherwise amazing when playing more stripped-down acoustic music.
    Large symphony orchestra crescendos, certain piano recordings, and complex popular music mixes (try Tears For Fears ''Woman In Chains'' or the ''Percussion Ensemble'' tracks on the Stockfisch Records' ''Are You Authentic? - AYA - Authentic Audio Check'' SACD) can reveal the weaknesses in any system.

    • @hificave
      @hificave  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes sir! Being able to to do large complex tracks does not also mean you that the system will bring out the subtle and fleshed out intimicy of a simple trio and vice versa.
      It’s like saying the only way to hear music is in a large auditorium or large venue or people who say the only way is in a small club… both are true. Remember the understanding of impacts of hi-fi gear chain doesnt insinuate that it is for achieving good simple trio music, but to help in our analysis to how we can reach whatever end game we want.

    I had a particular singer that seemed to be overloading her microphone. It took me months to realize that other singers in the same vocal range seemed to have the same problem. That made me realize it wasn’t the singer, it was a room acoustics problem. Problems with good systems are often not apparent until you have lived with the system for a while. Even then, where the problem originates can be difficult to figure out.

  • @mightybenaiah9076
    @mightybenaiah9076 Před 25 dny +1

    When using traditional sealed subwoofers I have used an external high pass filter to send 90hz to my mains and then used the subs low pass filter at about 70 to 80hz with a 12 db slope on each. It sort of filled in the gap between them nicely because of my traditional subs high output.
    From the research that I'm currently devouring, it seems that when both drivers are open baffle (the subs and the full range), that the crossovers can have some overlap, sometimes substantial in order to get a nice blend. Here in your example I see that you have a shared 20hz frequency between the two drivers and values that are closer to traditional box speakers and subs. In other open baffle designs, I've seen seasoned builders like yourself letting the w15 run at crossovers settings ranging from 150hz to as high as 500hz. The same could be said for the factory built leonidas and the macara speakers. However, all of those systems had both drivers placed on one baffle whereas you have moved the subs away from the main drivers. Is that why your crossovers are closer to traditional values? Desperately try to learn here. Thank you!

      Hmmm. I wonder. You got me thinking

    • @hificave
      @hificave  Před 25 dny +1

      Using them up to 500hz in the same baffle was never good for me with this full range driver. But it was required with the platinum 10.
      But its very different driver and had a lower qts…
      Considering the following: Having them in room corners now and optimizing the position of the ful range driver on the baffle and in the room to maximize both driver performances might be… part of the explanation..

If that doesn't gell, then I can always use those bass drivers as the start of an open baffle full range project.

    The listening room is frequently overlooked in importance. Acoustics is hugely important. I think that's one of the reasons that some are disappointed when they bring home their new speakers from the audio/video store. It happened to me with the a pair of Ohms. I was so disappointed that I sold them within weeks and got something else (ADS 1230s).

      And quickly understand that a room can make a system made of Dagostino and Wislons even sound flabby, bloated or even thin or even sound harsh.
      And move to the next room and it sounds great. But in all impact layers, context is king. There’s no fixed rules, just guidelines to help us stay flexible when trying to understand issues.

Power conditioners, outlets, platforms for speakers, de-coupling devices, even room-construction itself. The tweakers were right, they just never had the product development to prove their claims...

    The source is important because there is no way to correct a bad source. Room+speakers is the critical part; if it's not right, nothing is right. Electronics have progressed so much the last decades, that every medium to high quality goes beyond what's audible. Electronic distortion should be the last of the worries.

    No argument that all stages are important, but the point about speakers is that their high degree of variability between manufacturers will have the highest potential to ruin an otherwise good system.
    I would actually place speakers ahead of the room in terms of impact, because good speakers in a bad room sound better to me than bad speakers in a good room.
    P.S. Why as much as $1000 for 2 full range chassis drivers with wooden baffles and stands?
    What drivers are they?

    • @hificave
      @hificave  Před 5 měsíci +1

      When people dismiss it, it’s because there is a limitation somewhere in the system that is negating all the benefits of the power cord, or in some cases the absolute wrong power cord is being used for the gear… or in some other rare cases, the power cord itself is… junk :-)

    • @NeilBlanchard

      @@hificave In my case, I dismissed AC cords and filters because I didn't think they *could/should* make a difference. I recently tried 5 different AC cords vs generic 18AWG - and the two from Pine Tree Audio made significant differences. The other 3 (a "hospital grade" cord, and two specifically sold as audio grade cords from Amazon) made very little if any difference. And of the two from PTA, the slightly lower priced one was significantly better, in my system in my opinion. The Iso-Braid I prefer is ~$70/3 ft; so not nothing, but very reasonable.
      And the improvements are significant within my system. Resolution, soundstage size and layering ...

    My end game cost very little, it's a desktop setup which sounds way better than any of the more expensive full systems I've set up in a lounge. The key was adding a subwoofer (ebay £20) to good quality small desktop speakers (ebay £60), through a class-D amp with bass filter (£100). Sure I could seek bigger & better, but it's good enough for my 58 year old ears.

    Excellence in everything except analog sources, transducers, and room acoustics can be had for modest money. Unless you believe in chasing a "sound" with electronics. I don't believe that that pursuit can be more than marginal. Since I am digital only, I spend money on speakers only. Everything else is a solved commodity if you ween yourself off high-end electronics hype.

    • @geoffreydebrito7934
      @geoffreydebrito7934 Před 5 měsíci +2

      It takes knowledge, patience and persistence but I have found that modest money can secure excellent analog sources, transducers and room acoustic treatments. Patience and persistence in a knowledgeable search on the many audio used outlets can secure excellent quality gear in mint to very good condition. Dealer demo sales can be an excellent source of heavily discounted equipment. New equipment can be purchased at significant savings during holiday sales.
      Room treatments can be things as simple as a rug on the floor, a tapestry hung on a wall and careful arrangement of furniture to achieve a good combination of absorptive/reflective surfaces. It is said that, "necessity is the mother of invention" and when a burning interest in achieving a fine sounding system faces the restriction of a modest income... Then thinking outside the box becomes a requirement :-)
