    A linguistic remark concerning the meaning of conjunction in Polish, the language the series were written in: conjunction (koniunkcja) has only two meanings in Polish: it is either the logical connection in a sentence (meaning 1 in the video), or the astronomy one (meaning 3). For the second meaning there is a separate Polish word: współwystępowanie.
    For a native speaker of Polish, "koniunkcja sfer" sounds clearly like an alignment of the spheres/worlds/planets that allowed for them to interconnect. In the Polish fandom understanding the spheres as separate world or alternative universes is a given.

    The conjunction is referred to in books as CATACLYSM so it may hint at it being simply natural phenomenon, the Lady of the Lake book reveals the most, apparently the Conjunction of the Spheres somehow ACTUALLY MULTIPLIED the number of exisitng worlds!! And once it passed, the stable portal the great Gate of Worlds, Ard Gaeth was closed, so it was so shattering to the multiverse that the travel between worlds was restricted by it! Apparently before Conjunction travel between worlds was far FAR EASIER:
    "''Your hairy ancestors,' the elf continued, shaking the straw in the bowl, 'quickly learned to use their opposable thumb and rudimentary intelligence. With their help they did different things, usually as ridiculous as terrible. What I mean to say is that, if anything that your ancestors created was not terrible, then it was ridiculous.'
    Another bubble followed the first then another.
    'We, Aen Elle, we cared very little about the deeds of your ancestors, we unlike the Aen Seidhe, our cousins, we left that world a long time ago. We chose another universe, more interesting. In that time, it will surprise you, it was possible to move freely from one world to another quite easily. With some talent and practice, that is. I have no doubt that you understand what I mean.'
    Ciri was intrigues, but remained silent, aware that the elf was teasing. She did not want to facilitate the task.
    Auberon Muircetach smiled. He turned around. On his neck was a golden torc - a symbol of the ruler, known in the elder speech as a torc'h.
    'Mire, luned.'
    Again he blew lightly into the straw while gently swaying. A fan of smaller bubbles soared into the air.
    'The worlds were like these bubbles,' he hummed. 'So, it was, so it was... We told ourselves, what's the difference, we will stay here a little while, then there a little while, so what if the stupid Dh'oine insist on destroying themselves and the world? We'll go somewhere else, to another bubble...'
    Under his burning gaze, Ciri nodded and licked her lips. The elf smiled again, and blew his bubbles again, this time so that the straw formed a large cluster of smaller bubbles and joined to each other.
    'Then came the Conjunction,' the elf raised his straw laden with bubbles. 'The number of worlds increased. But the door closed. It was closed to all but a handful of elected people. And the clock was ticking. We needed to open the door. Urgently. It was imperative. Do you understand that word?' " Witcher, The Lady of the Lake
    The Aen Seidhe also according to Yarpen Zigrin were not native to the continent of the witcher world but arrived on white ships long before humans, Nordlings did in similar manner :).
    "Elves!' snorted Yarpen. 'They - to be accurate - happen to be strangers just as much as you humans, although they arrived in their white ships a good thousand years before you. 're all brothers, now they're grinning and saying: "we, kinsmen", "we, the Elder Races". But before, shi- Hm, hm... On one hand I fully understand being interested in the lore of Witcher per se. On the other I know that Sapkowski has attitude like if there is a river in the book, and someone tells him: "there is inconsistency with a river in according to info from one book that river should be much more further away" he doesnt care because it's a detail that changes nothing in the story. Sapkowski is not Tolkien, he is kinda the opposite. He makes only that much world that is necessary for the story. That's why there were never an official map of the Witcher world by him. He doesnt care of such details. Especially that a lot of his work is playing with convention: transformed legends, quotes from real world but changes "Indian" to "Elf" etc

    • @fantasywind3923
      @fantasywind3923 Před rokem +3

      Heh yeah, that's how he is...and then suddenly he can go on a tangent a la Tolkien...like summarizing the history of Kovir and Poviss, he does as much worldbuilding as he needs for the current narrative purpose. The use of the cultural influences, inspirations is a big thing as well, I mean everything from classical fairy tales, Grimm brothers, Andersen, French fairy tales (and general French influence on places like Toussaint), Slavic, Norse, Germanic, Celtic, real world folklore and mythology that is reworked in his fictional world etc. historical references, some as obscure as the in-universe book by voivode Bronibor (voivde itself being slavic office title for those not knowing) "Przewagi Elearów Redańskich" tranaslated as The Victorious Deeds of Redania's Gallant Cavalrymen being callback to historical book Przewagi Elearów Polskich :) and so on and on.

      Its one of the things I love and hate about the witcher. On the one had its very easy to read since you dont have to know any lore. You know who geralt is, you know what geralt knows, thats it. But on the other it makes things like the conjunction hard to follow and understand since there isnt any lore or full explanation about it

    • @piotrwegrzyniak5798
      @piotrwegrzyniak5798 Před rokem

      @@b.w.9392 I think it's just "accept you'll never now". Just like there is a story of the flood in the Bible and more generally in the middle east (probably further), and scientists still wonder what was that event? Was it one single event or are those many events that eventually merged? When it happened etc. I even heard the theory that the base of it is melting of glaciars and the rising of sea level after it when indeed people could get flooded in many instandes.
      Similar the conjunction - it is supposed to be half legendary, without really good explanation. In fact it is more realistic than being able to explain everything

I mean the monoliths in that sense were not even a thing in the witcher books, sure there are monolithic stones, standing stones, obelisks, and so on in the witcher world, as these megalithic structures are known to appear throughout Europe and those cultural influences were big part of the witcher universe worldbuilding, but they NEVER had this significance in books. The closest thing is the stone placed on the veins of magical energy! :) But it has nothing to do with the stuff in the show hehe. Perosnally I would not conflate the lore of the books and more or less faithful games with that of the netflix tv show, since the two have irrevocable differences in their very core :).

    Maybe someday a conjunction will bring a good and fateful adaptation of the Witcher books from another world. Because I've lost all hope that happening here.

    It's increasingly obvious that the word "ancient" either refers to the elves' pre-Earth history, or in the American way, that is, a mere few centuries.
    This is very unlike Middle Earth, which spans about 10,000 years, or ASoIaF, that spans even longer, or even The Elder Scrolls, that spans multiple cycles of the universe's existence.
    Kinda disappointing, actually.

    I enjoy it for what it is. Is it the books? Yes and no. People need to eat some fiber or take a laxative and relax.

    Hey Robert, I love watching your videos! I'm always finding something new about my beloved worlds and stories. One complaint though. When it comes to reflect on The Witcher world, why are you even taking into account these poorly written, poorly directed and shitting on source material Netflixe's abominations? :D

    The absolute most important piece of Witcher media are the video games. The Witcher wouldn't even be popular without them and they did the material way better than the show. Why do you only mention the books and show?

    Don't include Blood Origins in any cannon. That thing is just a bunch of bull CZcams.

    We'll look at the ships that appear they didn't have no cannons on them and we know that ships had cannons even in the Tudor days much less a ship from the age of sail or a World War I ship even my God thank you for World War I share for a aircraft carrier battle group would have appeared they would have been going to take over pretty easy if it was an aircraft carrier battle group and they would have had enough people to to repopulate you know there's like $6,000 on the aircraft carrier alone and I probably would have been enough females there wouldn't have been enough females for every male but there would have been enough so that the human race could you know could colonize that world and they wouldn't so much need magic cuz I have guns we have the small arm from the ships and have all the equipment and so they can start you know making you know reloading bullets and you know making gunpowder they have they have enough equipment that they could you know scan the local to try to create some kind of form of gunpowder might not be as good as modern maybe they have to go back to black powder or something

    I stopped reading the Witcher books once I realized how much of the lore is either unexplored or unexplained.
    The world of the games was so interesting I could wait to learn more. I began reading them to get in-story details that the games left to mystery.
    But, all I got was a much different characterization of Geralt, unsatisfying relationships and boring plots (all just my opinion).
