  • Welcome to my Newport Marathon race video. My 16 week training block is now over and I got to race my best ever marathon. I think the video will tell you everything you need to know about how my race panned out. If there’s anything about my race that you’d like to know and I didn’t include, feel free to ask 😁
    Thanks so much for watching 😊

    An unexplained tracker timing error....There I was trying to find Newport traffic cams with a live feed (unsuccessfully}, thinking a gale must be blowing in off the water in a feeble attempt to test your mettle. Consistent, disciplined and outstanding effort. The "Oh, my God" at mile 23 might have concerned me had I not known your finishing time and it was obvious you were enjoying that race. You did not appear to be holding on but reeling runners in due to your end of race effort. All of the training videos in the world could not surpass this one, thank you for carrying that camera with you. The smile on your face as you walked to get your medal and the smile on the face of the guy who draped it around your neck was amazing. I think you just upstaged the upcoming coronation. We are all very proud of you.
    Now, REST! 🙂

      What a wonderful set of comments Donald. Thank you so much for all the positive support you’ve given me and my channel. It’s so appreciated. The stories of the thoughts going through peoples minds of those that had been watching the tracker have made me smile. This one probably the most 😁
      I’ve looked at my timing mat placings at each mat and it shows I gained plenty of places at each one. So although I thought I may have been a bit quick off the mark, I was still doing enough to keep on catching those runners up who were in front.
      I can honestly say that short walk to collect that medal was one, if not the proudest moments of my running life. Normally I’d take the medal in my hand but I thought no, let’s enjoy the moment and have it placed round my neck. It was a wonderful moment 😊
      My resting is up already over I’m afraid. With another marathon to run in 11 days, I’m already out and running again ….but after that I promise I will!

There was a bit of rain/drizzle half way but that was it. Having no wind made a huge difference too. As I have my next marathon on Monday I’ve already had to shift my thoughts to that and I’m back out on a few shorter runs to get everything freshened up the best I can 😊

    Outstanding performance, Rachel. Comfortably inside the London Marathon Championship qualification time. It looked the `right' size of marathon. Never crowded but people in sight all of the time. Organisation seemed to be smooth. One to consider for next year. We'll hopefull see you at MK.

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před rokem +2

      Thanks both. Couldn’t have wished for a better race. I did drop the pace slightly at the end, but nothing major, especially not like last year where it was over with 10k to go.
      It’s funny how you mention race size, as to me that was pretty large compared to virtually everything else I do but I was watching Kelly’s Newport video (Kellogg’s on the run) and she described it a small event. I thought it was a perfect size and something I’d both recommend and run again. Problem I’ve set myself now is that anything with hills will just slow me down if I want to go faster. Maybe Newport is the new Shakespeare for me 😁 …and maybe a trip to London 😱

That way it’s never more than a small amount of time till that next marker is reached. The last few clips are always hard to bother but I know it’s important to finish the story off. Thanks 😊 Maybe Stratford being cancelled was a blessing in disguise because it forced me off that route. I know I’d have not got Sunday’s time on the Shakespeare route, it’s just too undulating. Problem now is as I set this time on a flat course, I’d probably only stand a chance of bettering it on an equally flat route. Maybe Stratford is assigned to the history books 😁

    That was a brilliant effort Rachel, very inspiring. I was confident you would get your PB based on how well your training had gone. I'm amazed that you can race and hold a camera at the same time! What gels did you take during your marathon? I've never run a marathon but some years ago on a very long (for me) Sunday run I tried some caffeine gels but they caused some chronic stomach problems and the results were very unpleasant. Not sure why as I nearly always have a strong cup of coffee before a 5 or 10K or an interval session and have never had any problems. What are your racing plans for the rest of the year after you've recovered from Newport?

    • @racheld1844
      @racheld1844  Před rokem +1

      Hi Geoff. Luckily the camera I use is tiny so it’s really easy to carry. Some of the other CZcamsrs film with a go-pro which can be a bit bigger and heavier. The gels I use are hi5 energy gels and also hi5 caffeine energy gels. These were handed out on the aid stations of my very first marathon and it’s what I’ve used ever since. The caffeine in these sachets are very low dose. Just 30mg, where some can be well over 200mg and some people will take more than one of these. I don’t drink tea or coffee so I’m very sensitive to even small amounts of caffeine which is why even the low quantities work for me. Maybe it was the dose in your gel that upset your stomach? The labelling is often quite subtle as to whether it’s a low or high dose and if I was to ever change/ or take an alternative it’s always the first thing I’d check. I have no idea what a big hit of 200mg would do to me because I’ve never tried 😱

      Hi Neil. I just rechecked my garmin account and the elevation is 53ft for 26.2 miles. I couldn’t imagine anything flatter. I think another bonus of the day was that there was very little wind. I would definitely recommend it. It’s not a massive event but that’s what I prefer and the organisation was spot on. Drinks in bottles is a big selling point for me too. You get both water and energy drinks. I was over the start line in seconds and had space right from the off. It’s a little quiet in sections, both for spectators and other runners but again, I prefer that so I can just get my head down.
      Good luck with Dublin and building the training back up. I’m probably 50/50 for Newport. I’ll either run there or London or my miss a marathon block altogether and try something else. If I do end up running back in Newport, I will let you know 😁
